Anthropic just launched Cowork, a new capability that transforms Claude from a chatbot into a genuine desktop assistant. Here's what makes this remarkable: according to company insiders, the entire feature was built in roughly a week and a half, largely using Claude Code itself. Yes, AI is now building AI tools at an accelerating pace.
Cowork lets non-technical users give Claude access to specific folders on their computer, where it can read, edit, and create files autonomously. Need to organize a messy downloads folder? Want to generate a spreadsheet from receipt screenshots? Claude handles it. The system operates through what Anthropic calls an agentic loop - it formulates plans, executes steps in parallel, and asks for clarification when needed. What's particularly interesting is how this product emerged. Anthropic noticed developers were already using their coding tool, Claude Code, for non-coding tasks like vacation research and email management. Ofcom, the UK media regulator, launched a formal investigation into X over Grok's ability to generate non-consensual sexualized images of women and children. The investigation focuses on whether X failed to assess illegal content risks, prevent users from viewing such material, and implement effective age verification for pornography.
The UK government is backing Ofcom's actions, with officials describing the content as vile and illegal. The government even brought forward legislation criminalizing the creation of non-consensual intimate deepfakes, making it a priority offense under the Online Safety Act. Indonesia and Malaysia have both temporarily blocked access to Grok until effective safeguards are implemented.
This represents Ofcom's most combative move since key Online Safety Act provisions took effect. None of the other businesses it has challenged have anything like X's global reach or Elon Musk's political influence. What happens next will define the extent to which powerful tech companies operate under democratic control.
In the United States, the Senate passed the DEFIANCE Act, allowing victims of non-consensual deepfake images to sue creators for civil damages. The bill passed with unanimous consent, building on the Take It Down Act that criminalized distribution of such images and requires platforms to promptly remove them.
These developments highlight a critical tension: as generative AI becomes more accessible and powerful, the gap between technological capability and regulatory oversight widens. Creating convincing deepfakes no longer requires technical expertise, just access to the right tools.
Let's pivot to some positive developments. Google Research released MedGemma one point five through their Health AI Developer Foundations program. This open multimodal model is designed for medical imaging, text, and speech systems that developers can adapt to local workflows and regulations. It follows Google's broader push into healthcare AI.
