Lighter Than You Started is a daily podcast offering gentle reflections on the news, the noise, and the small human moments that shape our days. With wry humour and quiet honesty, it’s not about fixing you, just about ending each day feeling a little lighter than when it began.
Hi I'm Keith and welcome to Lighter Than
Intro:You
Keith:Started. It's Sunday and for many people there's a point during the day when tomorrow quietly appears. Not physically of course but mentally. You begin thinking about Monday. The meetings.
Keith:The emails. The commutes. The conversations waiting to happen. The jobs that's still only doing. And before long your Sunday is sharing space with a Monday that hasn't even arrived.
Keith:There's something very understandable about that. Our minds like to prepare. They like to reduce uncertainty. They like to feel that if we think about tomorrow enough today somehow tomorrow will become easier. Sometimes preparation is genuinely helpful.
Keith:Packing a bag. Planning your diary. Writing a to do list. Those are practical things that can make life simpler but there comes a point where preparation quietly becomes preoccupation. Where you're no longer organizing tomorrow you're living it.
Keith:You're mentally attending meetings that haven't started. Replying to emails that haven't arrived. Solving problems that may never appear and all the while today is still happening around you. Sunday has a unique quality. It often offers a little more space, a little more time, a little more opportunity to pause.
Keith:And perhaps that's exactly why tomorrow can begin to creep in. Because the quieter today becomes the louder tomorrow sometimes sounds. But perhaps tomorrow doesn't need today quite as much as we think. Perhaps Monday is perfectly capable of arriving when Monday arrives. Perhaps it doesn't need us borrowing worry from it twenty four hours in advance.
Keith:There's something surprisingly gentle about trusting the future to arrive in its own time. Not because you're ignoring it. Not because you don't care. But because you've discovered that thinking about tomorrow all day doesn't actually give you two Mondays. It simply takes part of your Sunday away.
Keith:You don't need to spend today making tomorrow easier. You don't need to mentally carry the beginning of the week before it begins. You don't need to rehearse Monday while Sunday is still unfolding. Instead perhaps you can simply notice today the conversations you're having the meal you're enjoying the walks you're taking the quiet cup of tea the ordinary moments that soften and pass unnoticed because our attention has already traveled elsewhere. Tomorrow will have your attention when it becomes today.
Keith:It doesn't need it yet. So if you notice your thoughts drifting towards the week ahead perhaps gently thank your mind for trying to prepare you. Then quietly remind yourself today is still here and today deserves my attention too. Today's thought for you. You don't need to make tomorrow easier today.
Keith:Thank you for sharing this moment on a Sunday with me and as always I hope you end today feeling lighter than you started. Draw gently and I'll see you tomorrow on the flip side. Lighter Than You Started is a think of something publishing production.
