The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

As broadcast April 14, 2023 with plenty of extra groans.  Tonight we welcomed Matt Scotch (no way that's a real name, get outta here) and Hank Smith (also fake, obvioiusly) from the LA-based UGHH, which is the newest band on the illustrious Poor Man Records roster.  These two obvious alias users kicked their band mate out of his own house then joined us for an interview and playlist selection of their favorite tunes while we highlighted the joints from their new 7" single.  It was a lot of fun, although Danno went home and changed the locks to his house immediately, it must be duly noted.

I.
It is 20 hours past midnight after UGHH…a pretty wack Friday weather-wise, and who else could we possibly invite as our guests tonight but the LA-based band that is the namesake of your reaction to all the things that drag you down. This is Danno studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, ready to blow out some amps tonight. Our guest artist selectors are a four piece band out of LA called, as mentioned, UGHH (sp.) and they’ll be completing the job of ripping your faces off before the show is through tonight. The crew just dropped a new 7” single via Poor Man Records, who we just adore, and we just had to have them on the gig tonight. So, to open the gig we’re gonna go with the patron saint of all that is defiant rock, because not opening with Lemmy would force the man’s ghost to torment me for eternity even harder than he already does. This is The Drop.
Motorhead – Overkill
The Drop is on the air ready steady go, but we’re not like, too jazzed about it. Speaking of that genre, it is not tonight and you are at the wrong venue because our guests tonight are an LA-based four piece called UGHH, and they’re taking over the playlist tonight with their wares and rather merciless tears. That all begins in hour 2.
As to what just happened that was Lemmy and his band Motorhead to open the show with what’s probably going to end up being the theme of this evening’s programming, Overkill. This was the title track to the band’s 1979 album, often cited as the band’s best album.
Generally, Motorhead are cited as breathing new life into hard rock and heavy metal in the late 70’s and early 80’s, as it was very much on the wane at the time, and we’ll hear more from Lemmy and company later on in hour 2, may he rest in power.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast details, etc.
So, here in part 1 tonight we’re gonna do some punk & heavier stuff from here in Korea and Japan. Of course, usually our two countries are associated with rivalry and spite, but this is very much NOT SO amongst the indie kids, punks, and generally younger people. We’ll start with Drinking Boys & Girls Choir then get some Otoboke Beaver, RUMKICKS, and Yura Yura Teikoku to finish the square without getting too square, and THIS is The Drop on your Friday night with UGHHHHHHH.
_________

The Drop returns for the final airbreak of part 1 tonight, and let’s just say if you were looking for something to fall asleep to tonight you probably need to change the channel. Danno here, ready to welcome UGHH to the show in our 2nd hour tonight to take over the playlist as our guest artist selectors. Here in part 1 we’re rocking some cut for time Japanese refugees from the LA band’s playlist but also adding some local kick, so let’s explain ourselves...
Drinking Boys & Girls Choir – Linda Linda (Korean vers) (….)
Otoboke Beaver – S’il vous plait (…both the band out of Daegu and the latter out of Japan appear on the same label, which would be the UK-based Damnably who do SUCH good work. They’re also currently on tour in the UK if you have a chance to go check them out, both bands are absolutely KILLER live.)
RUMKICKS – Punk rocker (…one of my favorite recent discoveries here in Korea, this is a trio with some wild hair (don’t touch it, thank you) who hail from Seoul. This tune is from their most recent 7” single.)
Yura Yura Teikoku – YURA YURA TEIKOKU DE KANGAECHU (…great band here, very influential nowadays out of Tokyo’s late 80’s and early 90’s punk underground. Kind of hard to pin down genre-wise, always an interesting listen. This tune was released on the band’s album (name) III, released in 2001.)
Now we’re getting to the end of our first stanza tonight, and we have got to throw a wall of sound right in your mug whilst still bowing and using polite language. Up next is Korean band 13Steps with We Turn Down, then it’s something another Japanese entry from our guests tonight, which would be Kegawa No Meries with a tune called Jinsae, which translates here as insaeng or salm aka life. THIS is The Drop on your Friday night UGHH!
13Steps – We Turn Down
Kegawa No Maries – Jinsae

II.
The Drop continues here on our Friday night. Much like the weather, we welcome UGHH to the show tonight in our 2nd hour. They’re a band out of LA who just came out with bone breaker 7” single at the end of last month, and they’re taking over in parts 3 & 4 tonight. As to what just happened you have the aforementioned to thank for both of those cuts. That was…
Jerry Reed – Amos Moses (…a little classic country to open part 2 with tonight. This is from Reed’s 1970 album Georgia Sunshine. You’d probably know him better if you’re of a certain age and not too into country as an actor, with credits including Smokey and the Bandit for which he did the soundtrack, and Gator.)
X – Dancing with Tears In My Eyes (…formed in LA in 1977 and not to be confused with the British band who are totally different, this is a prolific outfit who from 80 to 83 released 7 studio albums and were a major force on the scene. This tune appeared on the group’s third LP Under the Big Black Sun.)

Moving along SM, #9870, podcast let us know …
So let’s get in a few more joints to continue the madness tonight. Up next we have MAMI and we’ll finish the triangle with Pigeon and Dry Cleaning, all of which we’ll try to make contrition but probably fail side opposite the dark sorcery. THIS is The Drop on your Friday night with UGHHHHHHHHH.
_________
The Drop is back and into the final lengths of our first hour tonight. Danno here, UGHH, who are our guests tonight. Now, as far as what just happened we’re hoping we’re not going to take all the blame for that, but let’s explain ourselves...
M.A.M.I – Chico Empresario (…Boy Businessman as this title translates came out in May 2021 as a standalone single. The band are out of Valencia which is in Spain for any of you geographically challenged types out there, and have just a few singles in the discog so far.)
Pigeon – Relentless (…pretty aptly titled tune right here, it must be noted. Pigeon are a band out of Germany, having released this also in 2021. The band are currently on tour in the UK as well, so tis the season to go check out a punk show in Britain I guess.)
Dry Cleaning – Scratchcard Lanyard (…staying in England and the UK with this one and in 2021. This was off the band’s highly acclaimed debut New Long Leg, and they’ve kept the momentum going with Stumpwork, which dropped last year. It’s like being at a post-punk show with your gossipy upper class London friend having to talk super close to your ear about people she can’t stand. Amazing.)
So that’s gonna just about do it for the first hour, but we’ve gotta get in a ruck and head to Ireland for our last tune. This is Bicurious with I Don’t Do Drugs, I Just Sweat A Lot and truer words as far as my bio could not be written. We’ll return with UGHH even though you might be feeling that already about the show, and THIS is The Drop at halftime.
