Megan Senese: You are a lawyer, and you have been working your ass off. You've been billing your hours, doing your business development, and now you are finally. Made partner, you earned partner.
Welcome to Minis with Megan on So Much To Say: A Legal Podcast For People. One of the things that people come to me for the most is now what? Now what do you do? You have learned one way of working and now as a partner, you are officially an owner. And I think what winds up happening with a lot of our lawyer clients is sometimes they expect everything to magically change.
Because you have a partner title and we've laid out a couple of steps on what you can do. Now that you've become a partner and you have got that coveted title, we'd love to kick off with. Showing gratitude. If you've listened to us in the past or you read any of our LinkedIn content, you know that saying thank you is really important, and it actually goes a lot further than I would've thought in kind of previous lives. Now that you've earned this partnership title, think the people that got you there. Maybe there's someone internal that. Helped build your business case. Maybe there is a key external client who supported you along the way. Send them a thank you note. Write a handwritten card. One of our favorite things to offer up is also, you could even host a, I've made partner and I want to thank you dinner or lunch if that feels appropriate for you.
The next thing that you can do is let people know, right? You have this great title now and you are essentially ready for business. But instead of just running around and asking people like, what do you got from me and how much money can I get from you? Do a tour on how can I help you? I am a partner now, and I would love to be able to support you, what's top of mind for you.
That way the conversation remains on them and about how you can service them. An additional thought is to ensure that you know where your money is coming from. This is a really big one, and for this, what I mean by that is understand how you're going to get paid if your firm. Is going to pay you more for brand new clients.
Then in this instance, and this is one of those things that maybe your business development team won't tell you because they want you to collaborate. But in this instance, if you are going to be measured in your first year of partnership on how much money you bring in the door or how much money you originate, cross cross-collaboration might not be the best approach for you.
I'm not saying be a jerk and cut people out of things. What I am saying is. To focus on bringing in brand new things. That might mean outreach to cold contacts. That might mean bringing in brand new things, which can take a really long time. And so the one of the things that we'd like to say, use your collaboration to feed you in the interim while you're waiting for those big things to hit so that you can build your own book of business.
You can have that become portable, you can go anywhere else you want to go. The more that you own your clients, the more autonomy, the more flexibility and the more quote, unquote power you have inside the firm.
