INTRO
As this podcast has grown, I realized God has called me to specifically serve Christian women over 50 navigating Grief, Transition, Healing, and Purpose all while walking in Faith this next season of life.
So, welcome to Chistian Women Over50 in Transition Podcast. I pray you’ll continue this journey with us.
Today we’re talking about something that so many people struggle with, whether they admit it or not — identity.
You know, I get asked that question a lot:
“Who am I?”
“What am I here for?”
“What’s my purpose?”
And honestly, those are the million-dollar questions sitting on the minds of millions of people every single day.
I know because I’ve asked God those same questions myself.
There were seasons in my life where I felt lost, confused, disconnected from who I was. I wanted answers. I wanted clarity. I wanted to understand my purpose.
But over the years, I realized something:
I was looking for identity in all the wrong places.
MUSIC
LOOKING FOR IDENTITY IN THE WRONG PLACES
See, our identity is not wrapped up in our jobs.
It’s not wrapped up in how much money we have.
It’s not wrapped up in our titles, our relationships, our family, our children, or what other people think about us.
And for me personally, I remember trying to find my identity in my family tree.
I thought maybe if I could figure out who they were, maybe it would tell me who I was.
Maybe it would give me some kind of indication about where I came from and why I am the way I am.
But that didn’t work.
Because the truth is, you cannot discover your spiritual identity through natural things.
To truly understand who you are, you have to go to Jesus.
Why?
Because our identity is found in Him.
YOUR IDENTITY IS IN CHRIST
The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 5:17:
“If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
That means your past is not your identity.
Your mistakes are not your identity.
Your trauma is not your identity.
What Jesus did on the cross changed everything.
Through His redemptive work, we no longer have to strive to become somebody.
We already are somebody in Christ.
That’s the difference.
So many people are exhausting themselves trying to become worthy, trying to become accepted, trying to become enough.
But Jesus already settled that on the cross.
THE FINISHED WORK OF CHRIST
Jesus shifted us from the old covenant mindset of striving into the reality of what has already been done.
Instead of trying to get healed, we believe we are healed through Christ.
Instead of trying to become victorious, we understand that through Him, we already have victory.
Instead of living defeated by fear, shame, insecurity, and rejection, we begin to see ourselves the way God sees us.
Colossians 2:10 say:
“And ye are complete in him.”
Complete.
Not lacking.
Not broken beyond repair.
Not “almost enough.”
Complete in Him.
That changes everything.
WHAT ARE YOU SAYING ABOUT YOURSELF?
But here’s the thing.
Even though God says these things about us, many of us still don’t believe it inwardly.
And that’s where the battle really is.
I want to ask you something today:
What are you saying about yourself when nobody else is around?
What are your inner conversations sounding like?
Because the Bible says in Proverbs 23:7:
“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.”
Are you constantly telling yourself:
“I’ll never be enough.”
“I always fail.”
“Nothing ever works out for me.”
“I’m too old.”
“I’m too broken.”
“I missed my chance.”
Meanwhile, God is saying:
“You are complete.”
“You are chosen.”
“You are loved.”
“You are victorious.”
There’s a conflict between what God says and what many of us keep rehearsing in our minds.
And eventually, whatever voice you believe the most becomes the direction your life follows.
RENEWING YOUR MIND
This is where renewing your mind becomes so important.
Romans 12:2 says:
“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
Transformation starts in the mind.
Not just hearing the Word once.
But studying it.
Learning it.
Replaying it.
Meditating on it.
Speaking it over yourself over and over again until it becomes more real to you than your feelings.
Your identity is in God’s Word.
But you have to renew your mind until your thinking lines up with what God already said.
You have to move from:
“I’m trying to become…”
to:
“I am who God says I am.”
That’s faith.
JESUS AS OUR EXAMPLE
Jesus said in John 14:12:
“He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also.”
Jesus walked in complete identity.
He knew who He was.
And because He knew who He was, He wasn’t controlled by people’s opinions, rejection, or temptation.
Many of us struggle because we don’t know who we are.
When identity is unclear, insecurity grows.
Fear grows.
Comparison grows.
But when you know who you are in Christ, you stop striving for validation from people.
YOU ARE WHO GOD SAYS YOU ARE
Maybe today you’ve forgotten who you are.
Maybe life happened.
Disappointment happened.
Loss happened.
Rejection happened.
But none of those things changed what God says about you.
You are still chosen.
You are still loved.
You are still called.
You are still God’s workmanship.
Ephesians 2:10
You were created on purpose.
There is purpose attached to your life.
And your identity is not something you earn.
It’s something you receive through Christ.
CLOSING
So today, I want to encourage you:
Stop looking for your identity in people.
Stop looking for it in titles.
Stop looking for it in accomplishments.
Stop looking for it in your past.
Go to Jesus.
Because in Him, you will finally discover who you really are.
And as you renew your mind with God’s Word, your life will begin to transform from the inside out.
Not because you’re striving harder —
but because you’re finally believing what God already said.
