What is Progress and Perfection?

Recovery themed, Christian flavored daily reflections for those struggling, recovering, or seeking understanding.

As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions.

Romans‬ ‭14‬:‭1‬

We’re all children. And I don’t mean that in a spiritual sense. We are all dumb, egocentric, lost in our own heads, furious with any interference of our playtime.

I suppose there is some sort of spiritual sliding scale where we all could be ranked according to the standard of our God. And in this sense, we could very well find ourselves closer to or further from God than others.

This is the temptation—to think that linear scales apply to spiritual principles.

We are all children. The scale may apply, but the scope is infinite. And therefore, wherever we find ourselves, we are dots on the line, indistinguishable from the billions of other dots. And we grouped together in an infinitesimally small dot of time.

In fact, we are all one dot.

Perception is difficult. When thinking in spiritual terms, we must cue our imagination to even make a beginning at a right perspective.

When a newcomer walks through the door of an AA meeting, it is important to remember that despite our own journey into sobriety and faith, on the scale of the universe, we are less than a breath away from our new friend.

And so, equality trumps superiority. Empathy becomes our common language. Compassion and service become the means by which we join hands and seek the kingdom together.

God, thank you for the divine spark pulling us toward you.
