The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

As broadcast October 23, 2023 with a boatload of shiny new goods and cellophane scents.  Tonight, as we are wont to do, it's time to unwrap what's been dropped from the audio multiverse and see what we liked, starting with our dear friend out of San Diego Scoobert Doobert, whose new album MOB just dropped on Friday.  We also had new jawnies from Haley Johnsen, Kurt Vile, and BADBADNOTGOOD to take us through hour one in style.  Part 3 the big new tunes out this week had some decent selections, with Sampha's new album Lahai being a notable new record (and the artist's first in years), just out days ago.  For the final stanza we had more from the local Korean realms to finish things off with heart signs, big highlights being Say Sue Me's latest single (what a banner year they've had), along with Balming Tiger's new record that slapped down to earth on Friday.

Part 1
Scoobert Doobert – Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)
- Our main man of mystery out of San Diego out with a new album this past Friday. It’s called MOB, but there’s an umlat above the O, so not totally sure how to pronounce.
- Go check the album and go peep Scoobert Doobert’s discography generally because he’s really a talented prolific artist.
- One name he’s worked with on production and remixes is Japan’s famed lovelies CHAI, as well. Shouts and respect to Scoobert Doobert to start the show tonight!
Pelicat – Still Around
- This is an indie pop band out of Norway’s capital Oslo, if you are not so initiated.
- The band says they play live shows once every blue moon, but rather than waiting for the next celestial occurrence, you can go check the band’s new album just out Friday, called Time Is On Our Side, available everywhere now.
Q – Hello
- As discussed previously on the show, this is an artist who’s still quite new but nowadays garners 2M streams on the spot with all the music alone every month.
- True name Q Steven Marsden, the artist originally hails from Broward County, FL which is basically Fort Lauderdale. Nothing larger announced with this single, so just a standalone for now.
Kevin Abstract – What Should I Do?
- Brockhampton’s leading man is out with a new solo album on November 3, and this is the 2nd single out.
- We previously heard the title track to the record a couple of weeks ago, titled Blanket. The full album once again is out in about 5 weeks’ time.
BADBADNOTGOOD feat Charlotte Day Wilson – Sleeper
- After debuting this song live earlier in the summer, the Toronto natives decided to get together to record this. You might be wondering about the warm, somewhat fuzzy sound on the cut.
- Well, that is there because the entirety of the song, every element, was recorded on analog tape.
Bombay Bicycle Club feat Damon Albarn – Heaven
- We had previously mentioned this album on earlier shows, most notably showcasing the band’s already released collab single with Chaka Khan, which was a big surprise once released.
- As of Friday the album is finally here, it’s called My Big Day, so go take a deeper dive if you liked that joint.

Part 2
Haley Johnsen – That Ain’t Love
- One of the most genuine and heartfelt artists out there right now, still a bit of a sleeper pick is Portland’s Haley Johnsen.
- This standalone just dropped on Friday and the artist says this marks a new era, so we’ll have to see what’s coming next. Really great singer-songwriter to follow though.
Dallas Tamaira – Levels
- This is the latest single and title track to drop from the Fat Freddy’s Drop lead singer.
- It had been a seemingly busy 2023 for Tamaira, who for a while just seemed like there were a lot of standalones dropping but nothing official announced, but that has come & gone.
- Levels, the new solo LP from Dallas Tamaira, drops Nov 3, so careful, watch out.
Japan, Man – Why Do People Change
- Laeticia Acra and Julian Cassia are back with a new album, which just dropped last Wednesday.
- The album is called Metropolis so go and check it out, and we must note, it is not to be confused with the Japanese anime classic film of the same name from 2001.
Beabadoobee feat Laufey – A Night to Remember
- This is an amazing collab here, as if you’ll remember beabadoobee is the London-based Philippine rocker and Laufey is the Icelandic-Chinese jazz artist, and both have been on the rise for a while now.
- The cinematic tune is just a standalone for now, nothing larger announced, but an extra nice cut for this week’s new muses.
Kurt Vile – Another good year for the roses
- A new EP is on the way from the laid-back surfer outta Philly, just announced with this single.
- Back to Moon Beach is out everywhere on Nov 17, so mark it or pre-save it if you dig what’s on the way to complete the space triangle.
LEENALCHI – Ultimate Prescription
- Dec 1 & 2 LG Art Center, Seoul

Part 3 – Poppin’ Off!
Charli XCX feat Sam Smith – In The City
- Per the main artist here, Charli XCX, “The song is about people you truly love and connect with,” and is definitely the hot single of the past weekend.
- Most of the connecting with people you truly love in the song is done through wild nights and partying, so there’s definitely a lot of fun to be had therein.
The Chainsmokers feat GRACEY – Think of Us
- New song and video out from The Chainsmokers as of Friday that’s definitely making waves over the weekend.
- The single is accompanied by a video as well, directed by Tom Tacheny.
Sampha – Suspended
- This is an album we’ve been talking about and anticipating for a while now, and Friday it finally arrived.
- The album is called Lahai, and is Sampha’s first in over 6 years’ time, so Suspended is definitely the word here. The album is also named after the London-based artist’s paternal grandfather.
Kali Uchis – Te Mata
- This song’s title means it kills you, and is the latest from the Colombian pop star based in LA.
- In fact, this single is the 2nd tune to be released in the run-up to their 4th career album coming out on Jan 12 called Orquideas, or orchids, hot on the heels of Red Moon rising being released less than a year prior.
Fuerza Regida – EXCESOS
- This is the tune off the Mexican-American regional band’s new album that just dropped Friday with a title that is proper California-inspired Spanglish.
- The LP is titled Pa las baby’s y Balikeada, and this is the San Bernadino-based ensemble’s 8th studio album.
The Rolling Stones – Angry
The Rolling Stones – Mess It Up
- As any of you stones heads out there will know, the latest album from the legendary Rolling Stones is out as of Friday, so we’ll close the third cubicle with a pair of tunes from Mick Jagger & company.
- Hackney Diamonds is available everywhere, so go give it a listen. The record didn’t blow me away, but it is a solid album front to back, easily their best LP in decades overall.

Part 4 – Fresh K Cuts
Sung Si-kyung feat Naul – Even for a moment
- The multi-talented Sung Si-kyung is out with this single as of the weekend, definitely making some local waves although most would know Sung as a TV personality.
- However, Sung has released 10 studio albums since debut in 2001, two of them in Japanese, so we’re definitely talking triple threat territory here.
Yuna – Bad Intentions
- This is an artist based in LA who’s amassed an amazing following here in Korea with her Sade, Aaliyah, Brandy-inspired RnB sound.
- Just a standalone single for now.
SUNMI – STRANGER
- Another veteran of the game right here, and t/n Lee Sun-mi is most famously known as a member of the Wondergirls, who made debut in 2007.
- Nothing larger announced with what is ostensibly a standalone single, but another solid entry in the solo discog for SUNMI.
Balming Tiger – Moving Forward
- This one is from arguably the big album of the month that just dropped Friday from the veteran hip-hop clique.
- As discussed on previous shows, the album is called January Never Dies, and is available everywhere if you wanna swim deeper into the audio waters.
KACHISAN – Rock, Paper, Scissors!
- Aside from hello, this was probably the first thing I learned in Korea upon arrival back in 2005, as everybody from kids to adults plays this in all kinds of situations to settle a minor tiff.
- The band is an all-male indie trio out of Seoul who
Say Sue Me – 4am
- This is a new single that just dropped from our most favored Busan indie darlings, who’ve had an absolutely banner year in 2023.
- From huge festivals abroad to appearances on KEXP in Seattle to everything else, it’s so good to see Choi Su-mi and company doing so well and exposing Korean indie to the world. Big things afoot.
cotoba – water blue indigo
- This is a tune we’d previously played on the show & it is by no means new at all.
- The math rock indie band released this earlier in the year in March, and mainly...I just needed something to accompany Say Sue Me into the sunset, so it is our friends cotoba, great band from Seoul.
