The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

Our indie & underground weekly soiree arrives on an auspicious day, for it was 70 years ago today that Bootsy Collins was born! We pay tribute to the Funkmaster and then it's more new indie than you can throw on two very oversized family platters with Prince Paolo.

Show Notes

As broadcast October 27, 2021 with plenty of Bootsy for your bootsy if you're flyin star child style on the podcast mothership!  Today we mark the 70th trip around the sun for the one and only Bootsy Collins, whose sojourn from being a member of The JB's to Parliament/Funkadelic to doing collabs with countless artists over the years has made an indelible mark on the music biz.  The man has been fired by James Brown, done more acid than Timothy Leary, quit touring cuz he hated being the lead man, been the right hand of "God Himself" George Clinton, and the list goes on & on.  May there be many more to celebrate for a legend.  Prince Paolo joins us once again to go through all the new indie & underground for the week, and this was quite the strong week of releases with Quelle Rox, Tape Tensions, and Napoles being highlights amongst the highly worthy.

PART 1 FACTS
Kali Uchis feat Tyler, The Creator & Bootsy Collins – After The Storm
- Happy 70th birthday to the irrepressible Bootsy Collins. Born William Earl Collins in Cincinnati, Ohio. The bass player will rise to prominence as a member of James Brown's backing band in the '70s before joining Funkadelic.
- If you wanna watch an amazing summation of his crazy career starting with his own band, then playing with James Brown & onto Funkadelic, watch Mike Judge’s animated Tales From The Tour Bus…hilarious.
- Happy birthday to a legend, Bootsy Collins! May there be many more.
The Aces – Daydream (Portugal, The Man remix)
- The Aces wanted to give their fans a little something extra as they prepare to hit the road. Cue the repackaged release of their sophomore album, Under My Influence, which dropped on Friday (October 22), and includes B-sides and reimagined tracks with, most notably, a remix of "Daydream" by Portugal. The Man.
CASTLEBEAT – We Can Make This Right
- This is the project of Josh Hwang, and this is his latest just out Friday.
- It’s kind of amazing the tunes he puts out, cuz they kind of straddle this weird area between lo-fi and indie rock-sounding beats.
- One thing I did not know is that aside from CASTLEBEAT, he also runs Spirit Goth Records.
Real Estate – Days
- This is a tune that doesn’t appear on the album released Friday but is kind of a bonus, which is a cover of a Television original.
- The band is hitting the road for the end of the year in North America, and guess who is providing the opening act for a few of those nights? Kate Bollinger!
- Days is available everywhere now.
Hope Tala – Tiptoeing
- The amazing West London rising artist is out with this, her latest single which has an amazing bossa nova twist to the beat.
- She says that the song is about the dance we all do when we are at the threshold of romance.
joe p – Crown Vic (Black Cloud)
- This is the moniker of an artist out of Asbury Park, NJ who does the entire suite for every aspect of his music.
- He records in his basement, and says openly that most of his recordings end up having some sort of noise in the background because of the water heater turning on. This might disappoint other artists, but he just takes it as it comes.
PART 2 SONGS
Magic City Hippies - Champagne On The Rider
Quelle Rox - happy in a haze - butterfly to ya
Bay Ledges - Not Now Maybe Never
sipper - half alive
Frank - so hot (“FUCK” 0:52)
Magon - The Willow
PART 2 FACTS
Magic City Hippies - Champagne On The Rider
- Magic City Hippies! Love these guys. They are a trio from Miami, Florida and what can I say, they make awesome tunes.
- They started out in 2015 and they have amassed millions and millions of Spotify streams. They’ve had a busy summer this year. They released 5 tracks, and now as we make the move to autumn, they continue the onslaught of awesome tunes with “Champagne on the Rider”.
- This track is so funky, so cool, and so catchy and the instrumentation is impressively detailed. Just another great song from Magic City Hippies.
Quelle Rox - happy in a haze - butterfly to ya
- So happy to have Quelle Rox back on the show. She is a Puerto Rican and Cuban singer who is currently based in Brooklyn.
- I remember having her song “Space Parade” on the show last year. It was one of my favorite tunes of 2020 actually.
- About 6 months ago, she released her debut EP. The EP is called “Lilac Rush” and it is fantastic.
- Now, she’s back with this new single and she continues to impress with her production and vocals skills. I’m very much looking forward to a follow up project, I’m definitely a fan of Quelle Rox for sure, great stuff.
Bay Ledges - Not Now Maybe Never
- Yes, Bay Ledges back on the show with a new track. Bay Ledges is a project by Zach Hurd, who is a very fast- rising songwriter and producer from LA but who is currently based in Maine.
- He is definitely an artist who has made a lot of noise in the past 12 months or so, having amassed over half a million monthly listeners on Spotify.
- I really like his stuff. It’s soulful, it’s glitchy, it’s just really cool stuff no doubt.
sipper - half alive
- Sipper is the moniker of Adam Driver. He is from New York, New York and he makes some very cool music.
- The last time we played him on the show was about 3 months ago. That song was called “I Won” and it is one of my faves of this year.
- His new song is more upbeat than that one but he still maintains that kind of deadpan vocal delivery that I actually really like. If you like the song on tonight’s show, definitely check out the rest of his catalogue, I think his music is great.
Frank - so hot
- Frank is the alias of Francis Harrington. He hails from Detroit. I like what he says on his profile page. He says he makes “easy tunes for hard times”. There’s something charming about that.
- Anyway, Francis is part of a pretty famous Detroit band called Brother Son. Their music is also pretty great by the way. Anyway, Frank is his solo project.
Magon - The Willow
- Magon is an Israeli-born and now Paris-based singer/songwriter and guitarist.
- Magon’s third album is slated for release on December. The album will be called ‘The Blue” and musically, it is heavily influenced by 70s rock.
- “The Willow” is the first single from that forthcoming album and it is about the journey in life and how we are all in search of something. Searching for love, searching for ourselves, searching for truth and the meaning of life, that kind of thing.
PART 3 SONGS
Soap - Lockdown Love ft Feyde
James Wyatt Crosby - Shadow of a Ghost
Tired Cossack - Pea Roll Along
Tape Tensions - I Called Your Name
J Pastel - You And Me
Dual Manner - Elsewhere
PART 3 FACTS
Soap - Lockdown Love ft Feyde
- I am new to Soap and I am already in love. I heard this new track, “Lockdown Love” and immediately had to check out the rest of their songs. Their music is great.
- They are a quartet. They say that they make bedroom pop from their respective bedrooms in Costa Rica, Paris, and Moscow.
- This is a band that I really want to keep an eye on. They have been out for about a year now, they have 5 songs to date, but no word yet on an EP or album. Definitely watch out for Soap, they are a band on the rise for sure.
James Wyatt Crosby - Shadow of a Ghost
- James Wyatt Crosby is an artist currently living in the rural town of Tiny, Ontario, Canada.
- He debuted in 2017 and got pretty well known on the Canadian scene. His music has also appeared on CBC TV and Netflix.
- Now that the pandemic is starting to subside, he is back with a new track. He says that this one is about loss and grief and how those feelings can change the way you perceive yourself and the people around you. I think it’s a great track for those late-night drives, or walks, wherever you are.
Tired Cossack - Pea Roll Along
- Tired Cossack is an artist from Winnipeg, Canada. I like the old school rock vibes of this one.
- “Pea Roll Along” is actually a song based on an old Ukrainian folk tale. The story a pea that rolls around and eventually turns into a boy. The boy then eventually becomes a hero of sorts.
- This track is the first single from his forthcoming new full-length album. No info yet about the title but we do know that it will be here before the end of the year.
Tape Tensions - I Called Your Name
- Tape Tensions is the alias of indie artist Jack Ross, who hails from Minneapolis.
- This track is a kind of bouncy electro-pop tune with some retro influences in there.
- “I Called Your Name” is the third and latest single taken from his forthcoming third album, “Questions in Balance”. It will be his first new album in almost 3 years so let’s see if we get anymore singles before it is officially released.
J Pastel - You And Me
- J. Pastel is an indie bedroom pop duo from Chicago. The duo is comprised of Chase Durrett and Casey Bruce.
- They started releasing music in 2019 and have been pretty consistent with the quality of their releases and have been steadily growing their fan base in the process.
- This new single, “You and Me” is another strong offering. It’s catchy, the vocals and lyrics are great and I really like all the little details in the instrumentation. Very nice stuff for sure.
Dual Manner – Elsewhere
- Dual Manner is a duo from Melbourne. Their new track is a sort of introspective kind of house track. I call this kind of stuff, “quiet-time house” music.
- The duo says that they wrote this song while reflecting about their lives. They say the song is about growing older and not being the person you thought you were going to be, losing your sense of self and the anxiety that comes along with that.
- We probably can’t really relate to that eh Danno?
PART 4 SONGS
Melin Melyn - Short Haired Lady
Margot Polo - its my birthday
Hi Frisco - Ever Again
Jerk Boy and Micci - Simple Life
Phebe Starr - Air
Napoles - 4 In The Morning
PART 4 FACTS
Melin Melyn - Short Haired Lady
- Melin Melyn is a 6-piece band from Cardiff, Wales. Their music has been described as a blend of surf rock, folk rock, and summery psychedelia.
- I think their new release, “Short Haired Lady” fits that description perfectly.
- Lead vocalist Gruff Glyn says that he was inspired by this song after stepping on some gum while walking the streets of London one night. He looked up and thought that the moon was laughing at him. He says that the experience put everything into perspective for him. I guess the message is, in life, sometimes you just step on gum while walking the streets of London... or something like that.
Margot Polo - its my birthday
- Margot Polo is the moniker of LA based songwriter and producer David Provenzano. “It’s My Birthday” is his second single of this year.
- If I may, I’d like to dedicate this track to my sister KC, who is celebrating her birthday today. Happy Birthday K, I love you!
- Margot Polo says that this song was actually created in a dream. On his birthday, he dreamt that he and all his close friends and family were gathered around a campfire and singing this song together. Pretty cool story.
Hi Frisco - Ever Again
- Glad to see Hi Frisco out with a new track and once again, they deliver another solid tune.
- Hi Frisco is a duo, not from San Francisco, but from East London. Their new track is bright and mood enhancing; something to just lighten your mood for sure.
- The duo says that the song is all about staying positive, enjoying the highs that life brings, and living in the moment.
- The duo says that they had trouble getting a live drummer in their studio so they jokingly put a house beat in one of the demos and they decided they actually liked it that way. I agree, I think it was a great choice.
Jerk Boy and Micci - Simple Life
- This is a great collab and a really strong track. I am really feeling this one a lot. Jerk Boy is the moniker of DJ and producer, Adam Stivala. Micci is the moniker of vocalist Michaela Baranov and both artists are from Sydney.
- The two are pretty accomplished in their solo work but I really hope they do more collabs.
- I love the vibe of this track. It’s got a tropical disco house sort of feel and I like the message of the song as well. It’s all about just feeling free and having real human interaction with people.
Phebe Starr – Air
- Phebe Starr is from Sydney, Australia and I am really feeling her new track, “Air”.
- This new track also came with an announcement regarding her debut album. Her debut studio album will be entitled “Heavy Metal Flower” and it will drop on February 16th.
- She wrote this song with the help of Alister Wright, and she says that they wrote the whole song in a matter of minutes. It’s kind of funny because I guess even THEY felt like it should’ve taken longer to create.
- They attempted to improve the song numerous times, but in the end, they just reverted to the original version.
Napoles - 4 In The Morning
- We are gonna end of the show with some silky-smooth R&B from Napoles.
- Napoles hails from Sweden. She has a very nostalgic sound to her music that sounds heavily influenced by 90s and early 2000s R&B.
- She says that this new track is a love song dedicated to that special someone that you can’t wait to go back to after a long day. Thankfully, I can totally relate to that, and after having a kind of long day today myself, I’m definitely looking forward to getting home to that special someone.
