Vox Liturgica:

The propers of the day according to the 1962 Roman Missal. The feast of Saint Lawrence, deacon and martyr, August 10 in the year of our Lord 2026.

Vox Liturgica:

Of today's mass, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes the following. The Basilica Of Saint Lawrence without the walls where the remains of the glorious Deacon are preserved is the fifth patriarchal church in Rome with Saint John Lateran, Saint Peter, Saint Mary Major, and Saint Paul without the walls. It is one of the five major basilicas where the pope alone says mass at the high altar in order to show that his jurisdiction extends over all the churches in the world, which are under the patriarchates of Rome, Jerusalem, Alexandria, Antioch, and Constantinople.

Vox Liturgica:

Here is held the station on Septuagesima Sunday on the third Sunday in Lent, on the Wednesday after Easter, and on the Thursday after Pentecost. The church invites us today in the Introit and Offertory to celebrate in this sanctuary the praises of God whose glorious witness this saint was by his martyrdom. Saint Lawrence was the first of the seven deacons attached to the service of the Roman Church. His duty was to assist the Roman pontiff when celebrating the Holy Mysteries, to distribute the Eucharist to the faithful, and to administer the Church's possessions whose revenues he distributed among the poor. Arrested by the Prefect of Rome in 02/1958 and called upon to deliver his riches to him, he showed him a crowd of poor people saying, these are the real treasures of the church by the inestimable gift of their faith and because they convert our alms into imperishable treasures for us.

Vox Liturgica:

He was laid on an iron bed in the shape of a gridiron, under which were placed half lighted coals so as to prolong his torture and make his death more painful. Flames were not able to conquer the charity of Christ, and the fire that burned without was weaker than that which within kindled in the heart of the martyr. Indeed, he said to his tormentors, you may turn my body over. It is roasted enough on that side. And later on, my flesh is now roasted.

Vox Liturgica:

You can eat of it. He died in 02/1958. His name is mentioned in the canon of the mass among the Roman martyrs. Let us always recite as a thanksgiving the collect of this day placed by the church after the canticle of the three children in the furnace. She makes us beseech God to extinguish in us the ardor of our passions as he granted to Saint Lawrence who was tested by fire and found pure to triumph over the flames of his cruel martyrdom.

Vox Liturgica:

In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost. Amen. The Introit. Praise and beauty are before him, holiness and majesty in his sanctuary. Sing to the Lord a new canticle.

Vox Liturgica:

Sing to the Lord all the earth. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost as it was in the beginning, is now and will be, through all ages of ages. Amen. Praise and beauty are before him, holiness and majesty in his sanctuary. The Collect.

Vox Liturgica:

Let us pray. Grant we beseech thee, Almighty God, to extinguish the flames of our vices as thou didst grant blessed Lawrence to overcome the fires of his torments through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the second letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians. Brethren, he who sows sparingly will reap sparingly.

Vox Liturgica:

He who sows freely will reap freely too. Each of you should carry out the purpose he has formed in his heart, not with any painful effort. It is the cheerful giver God loves. God has the power to supply you abundantly with every kind of blessing so that with all your needs well supplied at all times you may have something to spare for every work of mercy. So we read, he has spent largely and given to the poor.

Vox Liturgica:

His charity lives on forever. He who puts grain into the sower's hand and gives us food to eat will supply you with seed and multiply it and enrich the harvest of your charity. The gradual. Thou hast long read my heart, O Lord, coming to me by night. Thou hast tried me by fire, and hast found no sinful thought in me.

Vox Liturgica:

Alleluia. Alleluia. Well has Lawrence fulfilled the deacon's task who by the sign of the cross has made the blind to see. Alleluia. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to John.

Vox Liturgica:

At that time Jesus said to his disciples, Believe me when I tell you this, A grain of wheat must fall into the ground and die or else it remains nothing more than a grain of wheat. But if it dies, then it yields rich fruit. He who loves his life will lose it. He who is an enemy to his own life in this world will keep it so as to live eternally. If anyone is to be my servant, he must follow my way.

Vox Liturgica:

So shall my servant too be where I am. If anyone serves me, my father will do him honor. The offertory. Praise and beauty are before him. Holiness and majesty in his sanctuary.

Vox Liturgica:

The secret: accept we beseech thee, O Lord, the gifts worthily offered, and by the interceding merits of blessed Lawrence, grant that they may help us unto salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The common preface. Just it is indeed and fitting, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the power stand in awe, the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise.

Vox Liturgica:

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Vox Liturgica:

The communion. If any man minister to me, let him follow me. And where I am, there also shall my minister be. The Post Communion. Let us pray.

Vox Liturgica:

Filled with Thy sacred gift, we humbly beseech Thee, O Lord, that what we celebrate with due service, we may, by the intercession of blessed Lawrence, Thy Martyr, feel as an increase of Thy saving grace through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. Saint Lawrence, pray for us.
