Today, we cover discussions around repurposing the McCosh health center space as a graduate student center following the construction of a new health center, a lawsuit over New Jersey’s ballot design, a Supreme court case over new social media laws, and the new president of Hungary.

It’s Tuesday, February 27th.

In November, it was announced that the University will be constructing a new center dedicated to health and wellness. The facility, funded by a donation from the Frist family, will be called Frist Health Center. Health services will relocate from McCosh to the new health center upon its completion, set for 2025, leaving the McCosh space without a designated use. I talked to contributing News writer Claire Meng about what the vacancy at McCosh could mean for a potential graduate student center.

In local news, New Jersey’s 3rd district representative and U.S. Senate candidate Andy Kim filed a federal lawsuit yesterday over the design of New Jersey’s ballot. The ballot groups candidates based on whether or not they have been endorsed by their parties in the county rather than the office for which they’re running. Kim is hoping for the ballot design to be struck down in time for June’s primary despite holding two more county Democratic party endorsements than his rival, Tammy Murphy.

In national news, the Supreme Court heard arguments today over Florida and Texas laws aiming to limit tech companies' ability to moderate posted content. The laws came as a response to conservatives' concerns over right-wing censorship online. In response to the laws, NetChoice, an association of online tech companies, sued, claiming the laws infringe on tech companies’ ability to exercise [quote] “editorial judgment” and their First Amendment right not to be compelled into publishing content against their will. Currently, the Supreme Court has considered sending the case down to lower courts as the laws and arguments are still developing. Should the laws be deemed Constitutional, they could redefine the bounds of the First Amendment as it applies to online spaces. The Supreme Court is expected to issue a final verdict late this spring.

In international news, Constitutional Court head Tamas Sulyok was sworn in as the new president of Hungary yesterday. Sulyok, a political novice, was nominated by Hungary’s ruling party last week. Many in the opposition have voiced concerns over Sulyok’s lack of experience, with over 3,000 people attending a protest Sunday calling for a direct presidential election. Sulyok’s predecessor, Katalin Novak, resigned earlier this month after it was revealed that she pardoned a man convicted in a child sexual abuse case. Novak is a close ally of far-right Prime Minister Viktor Orban - Or-baan -, whose government forced the Central European University, or CEU, out of Hungary in 2018. This was the first time a University had been pushed out of an EU member country. In response to the proposal of the amendments the year prior that brought about the move, which has since been found to have broken EU law, President Eisgruber sent an open letter in April 2017 to CEU director Michael Ignatieff - Ig-Nat-ieff - in which he said the move was [quote] “an unconscionable attack on academic freedom.”

Sulyok will begin his term as president of Hungary on March 5th.

Today, you can expect cloudy skies and afternoon showers, with a high of 63 and a low of 51 degrees fahrenheit..
