Torah Daily: Daily Doses of Divine Guidance on the Parsha

In this week's portion from Kitavo, we encounter a profound moment as the Jewish people prepare to cross the Jordan River into the Promised Land. Moshe commands that blessings be invoked for those who keep the commandments, while curses are pronounced for those who do not. This pivotal ritual takes place on two mountains: Mount Grizim, where six tribes ascend to proclaim blessings, and Mount Ebal, where another six tribes declare curses. The Levites, a select group, stand in the middle, reciting both blessings and curses, emphasizing the significance of moral responsibility. The eleven commandments highlighted reflect sins often hidden from view, revealing the complexities of human behavior and the choices we face. This portion serves as a reminder of the duality of our actions and the importance of striving for righteousness in our lives.

Good morning and welcome. In this week’s reading from Kitavo, we explore the profound moment when the Jewish people prepare to enter the Promised Land. Moshe commands that blessings be pronounced for those who keep the commandments, with the opposite for those who don't. Six tribes ascend Mount Grizim to proclaim blessings: Shimon, Levi, Yehuda, Yisochor, Yosef, and Ben Yomin, while another six tribes—Reuven, Gad, Asher, Zvulun, Dan, and Naftali—stand on Mount Ebal to declare curses. The Levites, a select group, occupy the middle ground, reciting both blessings and curses. The eleven specific commandments highlighted emphasize sins that can be hidden from the public eye, often transgressed by those in power. Each curse serves as a reminder of the moral responsibilities we carry, even when our actions remain unseen. The blessings and curses reflect the duality of human behavior, urging us to choose righteousness. May we strive to embody the commandments and bring blessings into our lives.
