The Tender Hour

A guided sleep meditation to help you fall asleep, gently voiced by the Norse goddess Hel. A soft female voice guides you for the first 20 minutes, then over 3 hours of calm music carries you through the night. Tonight you can let go all the way down. Hel, keeper of the great quiet hall at the roots of the world, receives you exactly as you are, tired and unfinished and human, and lets you set down every burden in the warm, safe dark. There is nothing to prove here, and nothing to fix. Only the deepest rest, for as long as you need it. This is part of The Goddess Meditations, a series of female-voiced sleep meditations from The Sleeping Almanac, each guided by a goddess of old myth. Tonight, you can finally let yourself go all the way down.

All the way down into rest. Deeper than you usually let yourself go. I will show you how, and I will be here the whole time.

I am Hel. I keep the great quiet hall at the roots of the world, the deep still place beneath everything, where the weary come to lay down every burden and rest as long as they need. Tonight, that hall is open to you.

You do not have to be anything down here. You are received exactly as you are, tired, and unfinished, and human. There is nothing to prove in my hall, and nothing to fix, and no one to be. There is only rest, and you are welcome to all of it.

So let your body grow heavy, and let the day stay up above, where it belongs. You are going somewhere deeper now. Somewhere quiet, and warm, and safe.

Let us breathe together, slow and low. Breathe in, gently, all the way down into the bottom of your lungs. And breathe out, slow, and feel yourself grow a little heavier.

Again. Breathe in, quiet and deep. And breathe out, and sink a little lower, as if the bed were drawing you gently down.

One more. Breathe in the deep stillness. And breathe out the whole long day, and let it rise away from you like smoke.

Now let your breath move on its own, slow and low, and let every breath carry you a little further down.

Now feel a gentle heaviness begin at the very top of your head, soft and warm, like the deep quiet rising up to meet you. And as it settles over you, each part of you grows heavy, and lets go, and sinks down toward rest.

Feel it settle over your forehead, and your brow grows heavy and smooth. Over your eyes, and they grow still and deep. Your cheeks, and your jaw, loosening, your back teeth parting. Down through your throat, and the front of your neck, soft and open.

The heaviness settles into your shoulders, and they grow weighted, and sink down, away from your ears, into the bed. Down your arms, your elbows, your forearms, your wrists, to your hands, and your fingers grow heavy and still and open.

It sinks into your chest, and your slow heart, and your ribs, and your belly, rising and falling, slower, and deeper. Down into your hips, settling you deeper into the bed.

Down through your thighs, and your knees, and your calves, heavy now, and warm, and still. Down through your ankles, into your feet, into the soles of your feet, until all of you, from the crown of your head to the soles of your feet, is heavy, and held, and slowly sinking down toward sleep.

And now, let me take you all the way down to the quiet place itself.

Imagine you are sinking, gently, the way you sink into deep water, down through the warm dark, slow and safe, with nothing to catch and nothing to fear. Down past the noise of the day. Down past the roots of everything. Down to the deep still hall at the bottom of the world.

It is not cold here, and it is not frightening. It is warm, and it is deeply quiet, and a low fire glows somewhere in the dark, soft and gold and steady. The air is still. Nothing moves quickly here. Nothing is urgent here.

There is a place laid ready for you, soft and warm, in the deep quiet, and it has been waiting. Lie down into it, and let it take all of your weight, every last bit of it, the way the deep earth holds everything that finally comes to rest.

Feel how completely it holds you. You are not holding yourself up at all now, not your head, not your shoulders, not one single part of you. The deep quiet has all of it.

Here, at the bottom of everything, there is nothing left that you have to carry. You have come as far down as there is to go, and you are allowed to simply stop, and stay, and rest.

But let me take you down a little deeper still.

With every slow breath, you settle further into the warm dark, the way a stone settles to the very bottom of a deep, still pool, and comes to rest, and is not troubled by anything on the surface ever again. Let your mind grow as still and dark and quiet as the water all around you.

If a thought drifts down, let it keep drifting on past you, down into the dark, and gone. You do not have to follow it. You do not have to hold it. Down here, you can let everything fall away. Down past the day. Down past your thinking. Down to the still place at the very bottom, where there is nothing left to do but rest.

Each slow breath takes you down another layer, softer, and deeper, until even the breathing seems to happen on its own, far away and gentle, with no effort from you at all.

Let me tell you the thing I know, that no one else will say to you.

I know the bright day you have left up above, and I know the dark you are sinking down into now, and I am at home in both, and I am not afraid of either. Down here, the dark is not something to fear. It is only deep, and quiet, and safe, and it is holding you.

You are received here, exactly as you are. Not the finished version of you. Not the fixed version. Just you, tonight, tired and real, and that is enough, and it is welcome.

There is nothing more being asked of you. Not tonight. Not down here. You have done all the carrying you can do, and now you are allowed to put it all down and be held.

Whatever you did not finish today, leave it up above. It will keep without you. It is not yours to hold down here.

Whoever you are worried for, you can set them down too, just for tonight. You cannot help them by staying awake. You can only meet the morning rested.

So let go, all the way. Further than you usually let yourself. You are held in the dark, and you are safe, and you can rest as deep and as long as you need.

Hear it once more, in the deep quiet. You are received as you are. Nothing more is asked of you. You are held in the dark. Let go.

The low fire is settling now, down to a deep and steady glow. The hall is warm, and dark, and perfectly still, and it holds you the way the deep earth holds everything that has finally come to rest.

You are as far down as there is to go, and there is nothing left for you to do tonight but stay here, in the warm dark, and sleep.

So let yourself go the last of the way down now.

Down past the day.

Down into the deep warm dark.

There is nothing more to carry.

You are held in the dark.

Softer now. Heavier.

You are received, and you are safe, and you are home.

Sleep now. I will keep the watch until morning.
