120: How I broke All Business Rules And Made More Money

I tend to be one of those people who is a rebel by nature and never an A-star student.

The rules never worked for me, so I tend to create my own rules.

But then I started my own business with literally no idea what I was doing.

I figured the best way was to just figure out my own way.
That’s when everything changed. I learned that sometimes, the traditional rules don’t apply.
In today’s episode, I will share some business rules I broke, followed by a list of some rules I’m giving you full permission to break too!

 I tend to be one of those people who is a rebel by nature and never an A-star student. 

The rules never worked for me, so I tend to create my own rules. 

But then I started my own business with literally no idea what I was doing.

I figured the best way was to just figure out my own way. 

That’s when everything changed. I learned that sometimes, the traditional rules don’t apply. In today’s episode, I will share some of the business rules I broke, followed by a list of some of the rules I’m giving you full permission to break too!



You must dedicate a lot of time to your new business

03:22- 03:28 Rule number one: You must dedicate a lot of time to your new business. 

03:29- 03:37 Four months after starting my business, it was really not easy. I had to budget my time wisely. 

03:26- 04:15 I was able to slowly grow my business while living the dream. It was also the perfect way to experiment with different ways of working with my clients before settling into the way that felt right for me. So you really need to set your time aside.


Get as many clients as you can 

04:16- 04:46 Rule number two: You must try to get as many clients as you can. This is an indication of how well your business is doing as well as whether the clients are suitable for you or not. I used to hear coaches brag about how many clients they get. I remember one coach told me how many people I was working with, and when I told her 6, she replied with this smug look on her face, telling me that she had 20 clients.

04:47- 05:27 But instead of being jealous, I was actually laughing in my head. How can someone works with 20 one-on-one clients at a time is beyond me? Because I value freedom, I value my time. That's why I'm an entrepreneur. Not only would I never be able to keep track of that many people, I just don’t want to work that hard. Because I want to spend time with my family as well. So I decided early on that I only wanted to work with 4 clients at once. And to make up for the drop in income, I raised my prices a lot.

Get clients who will sign on for the long term

07:03- 07:41 Rule number three: It’s important to get clients who will sign on for the long term.  Now, that’s a great goal if you enjoy working with people long-term which sometimes I don’t. I’m totally happy to work with my clients in short bursts like maybe shorts 3 sessions for 5,000 dollars and then send them on their way. But I decided to change my model a little bit, I decided to work only with people for the long term, 12 sessions, or 13 sessions because that’s the energy I can sustain.

Don’t spend all your time messing around on social media

09:04- 09:14 Rule number four: Don’t spend all your time messing around on social media. "Yes, but who are you to tell me how to spend my time, Genecia?" 

09:29- 09:33 Yes, I spend a lot of time on social media, and it pays off. 

09:56- 10:06 It’s up to you how and when you use social media for your business. If it works for you, it works for you. I don't care what anyone else tells you.


You need to focus on building your list

10:08- 10:32 Rule number five: It’s all in the list, and you need to focus on building your list to a huge number before you can sell anything. When I first started, started with zero.  I was never really interested in numbers because I was more interested in giving people value and that was when I was running my cafe retail chain. 

12:36- 13:08 Numbers are just fluffed sometimes. If no one is buying from you, you can have the most number of likes on your social media. It is fluff. it is great that you have likes and I think it's a good adrenaline rush every time someone likes your post, but I've seen too many people having likes and shares but nobody is buying their products. So I say ignore your numbers for a while and see what happens in your business.

Genecia Alluora: Hello, gorgeous, and welcome to today's episode. My name is Genecia Alluora, and in today's episode, I want to share how I broke all the business rules and made more money doing it. Because I tend to be one of those people who is rebel by nature. I mean, I'm never an A star student. The rules never worked for me. So I tend to create my own rules. Starting my own business was no different. And since I started with literally no idea what I was doing, I figured the best way was to just figure out my own way. You see, I was never conventional. So why start now? The more business works for you, the more fun you'll have and the more money you'll make. So here are some of the business rules I broke, followed by a list of some of the rules I'm giving you full permission to break as well. Are you ready? Rule number one, you must dedicate a lot of time to your new business. Now, four months after starting my business, it was really not easy because I had to budget my time wisely.

Genecia Alluora: And even though I had my own car, I had my own office but I was still needing to work on catching up my time because I was busy socializing as well. I was able to slowly grow my business while living the dream. It was also the perfect way to experiment with different ways of working with my clients before settling into the right way that felt right for me. So you really need to set your time aside. Rule number two, you must try to get as many clients as you can. And this is an indication of how well your business is doing as well as whether the clients are suitable for you or not. So I used to hear coaches brag about how many clients they get. I remember one coach told me how many people I was working with. And when I told her six, she replied with this smart look on her face telling me that she has 20 clients. But instead of being jealous, I was actually laughing in my head.

Genecia Alluora: How can someone who works with 20 one on one clients at a time is beyond me? Because I value freedom, I value my time. That's why I'm entrepreneur, right? So not only would I never be able to keep track that many people, I just didn't want to work so hard because I wanted to spend time with my family as well. So I decided right and early on that I only wanted to work with four clients at once. And to make up for the income drop, I raised my prices a lot. So case in point, you don't have to constantly hustle for more and more clients. More clients doesn't always equal to more success. You get to decide how many clients you want to work with, then you adjust your prices accordingly. And that was why even though back in those days when I was an image consultant, I was starting out my image consultancy businesses, coaching CEOs, leaders of companies, and also politicians. I was able to charge $20,000 a client, for example, and sometimes for a smaller package, $5,000 for maybe eight sessions. Whereas compared to my peers, they could be working with 20 clients, but they don't charge as much or as high as me. And because of that, they literally burn out to a certain extent, and you won't be able to manage it.

Genecia Alluora: So I break all the rules. In my early 20s, I was already charging five, six figures for my project. And I'm so used to doing premium. And because of that, I get more freedom and more time and be able to achieve what I want to achieve in my younger days. So if you really want to do something about your business and your life and make more money doing it, you must break rule number two. You must have rule number two, which means you must try to get clients, but you must also balance it with pricing. Rule number three, it's important to get clients who will sign on for long term. Now that's a great goal if you are working with people long term, which sometimes I don't. I'm totally happy to work with my clients in short burst, like maybe a short three sessions for $5,000 and then send them on the way. But I decided to change my model a little bit. I decided to work on only with people for a long term, like let's say 12 sessions or 13 sessions, because that's the energy that I can sustain. That means I would like to work with customers and clients who can do 12, 13 sessions.

Genecia Alluora: Now, it really depends on your own energy. So there's no really one right way to do your work, and it's up to you how you decide how long you want to make your packages and services. So I find that 12, 13 sessions is good for me, not more than that. Three to four sessions for $5,000 package is good and great, but it doesn't really give me the satisfaction. And I no longer say, oh, work with me for one year. So I no longer use this words because my energy doesn't really allow me to do one year because I've got clients who come in who do 12 sessions in three months, 13 sessions in two months, and they really squeeze very tightly. And I love that because it builds up the momentum. I mean, we all have a part to play in this. The more you take action in a consistent way, the faster you build momentum and really grow your business. So that's how I deal with it. So it doesn't mean that you need someone who sign on for 12 years.

Genecia Alluora: It literally in really work with your energy and see how you can move with it. Rule number 4, don't spend all your time messing around on social media. Yes, but who are you to tell me how to spend my time, Genecia? It just so happens I love Facebook and I get a lot of business from there. So it's a win, win, really. I get to interact with my clients directly on a personal level and it never feels like work for me. So yes, I spend a lot of time on social media and it pays off. So one night on my private Facebook group, Soul Rich Woman, someone mentioned that they wished there were a simple how to guide for business. So I happened to have the evening free so I created one and launched it at a pay what you want price and made $2,000 overnight. So it's up to you how and when you want to use social media for your business. If it works for you, it works for you. Don't care what anyone else tells you.

Genecia Alluora: Rule number five, it's all in the list and you need to focus on building your list to a huge number before you can sell anything. When I first started, I started with zero. I was never really interested in numbers because I was more interested in giving people value. And that was when I was running my cafe retail chain. I was based in Indonesia. And after running a day of the franchise operations, I had free time in the night. So I turn on my webcam with just internet and my webcam and my microphone and Google Hangouts back in those days, I did a webinar Wednesday. And every single Wednesday, I was giving value for one and a half hours to two hours full on webinar. Of course, with zero people at the beginning, only butterflies and Lizards attended my webinar, literally, and was giving full value until I mastered the F word, which was funnels and Facebook ads, and being the best damn coach that I could be. So when I started my business in the part where I didn't even have an opt in at the beginning, I didn't know what funnels was. So I wasn't really interested in creating something just for the sake of bribing people to sign up. So I didn't. And like I said, that was even before I mastered the F word. Right?

Genecia Alluora: So it turns out that you can sell your programs with just a small group of engaged people. So my webinar Wednesday was a really successful case study. I went on, I was talking and I shared, and people just keep coming back. And my group was zero to the first 10 to the first 100 people. It wasn't like I had 50,000 people, 10,000 people, or the 200,000 people I have today. So by listening to and engaging with people that I want, to offer what I wanted to offer. I was able to create programs and services there for them because love your customers more than you love your products. So you need to be able to listen to what they want and create something for them that is of course of your expertise. And really that proof to sell out every single time. Numbers are just flop sometimes. If no one is buying from you, you can have the most number of likes on your social media. My dear, it is a flop. I mean, it's great that you have likes. I think it's good adrenaline rush every time someone likes the post, but I've seen too many people having likes and shares, but nobody is buying their products. So I say ignore your numbers for a little while and see what happens in your business.

Genecia Alluora: Now, if you have been struggling to try to conform to all the rules that you've been told to follow when you're starting a business, I hereby give you full permission to break all of them. In addition to the rules above, here's a common list of rules you may want to consider breaking. Number one you shouldn't list your prizes on your website. Number two don't work for free. It will make you seem cheap. Number three, you must always sound and look professional. Number four, don't review too much about your personal life. Number five schedule everything. Number six, you need to have a clear job title. Number seven, set your prices low when you are starting out because you are still getting established. Number eight, say yes to everything. Number nine, go to every networking event you can. Number ten, you need a business plan. Number eleven, you need to choose a niche. Number twelve, you want to make your six figures. Number 13 be everywhere on social media.

Genecia Alluora: Number 14, you need to have ten years of experience in your field to be considered an expert. Number 15 you shouldn't use your name as your business.
