PW Podcast

I've given up on all social media platforms—they're drowning in AI-generated slop and clickbait.

It's heartbreaking because I'm missing genuine connections with friends and colleagues, but wading through the garbage isn't worth it anymore.

Save your sanity: quit doom scrolling and rethink who you follow.

What is PW Podcast?

Join me on a journey exploring the ups and downs of being a creator. I make things across many mediums including apps, games, and podcasts. Along the way, I take the side roads to motivation and inspiration. Navigating the winding paths that try to stop us from achieving our dreams and goals.

Hello, everybody. Welcome to episode of the PW Podcast. I'm your host, Peter Whitham. You can find me and this podcast at PeterWitham.com. In this episode, I am gonna be talking about how I've just basically given up on all social media slash networking platforms. They are just beyond filled with slop both AI and human slop.

At this point, I would say, so if this doesn't sound like your thing, probably you should skip to the next episode or go listen to one of the archives. However, I think that. It's worth a few minutes of your time to just hear me out on this, right? Over the past few weeks, I have just got to the point where I don't look at any social media platforms anymore, which is awful.

It's terrible, but that's just the best way to deal with it because just like everybody it's pretty easy to spot the ones that have been generated by ai. But the problem now is they're all generated by AI or. If they're not, they're generated by people who, I don't know what help they need, but they better go find it and I just don't bother looking anymore.

I'm not even gonna name a platform. I'm just gonna say all of them. Simple as that. But the real tragedy here is that I have valued connections on those platforms, friends, family, people, I like to hang out with developers and creative folks and all those kind of folks, but I have to get through so much bullshit.

I. To get to see their posts that it's just not worth it anymore. And it's a really sad, because I know I'm missing out on lots of important things from friends that, I really would like to know about and really like to comment on and share and celebrate with them and all those kind of things.

But it's just impossible to get to it these days. Now there is one way you could go here, which is okay. Remove everybody from all your network except the people you know that you care about and you know that they are humans posting content. Now, the downside there is that there are some good systems out there that post content, for example, there are some good ones that gather up interesting feeds for me as a software developer in the IT industry

it's basically just gathering up the content and saying, here's a list for me. Great. But the problem is, again, it's so hard to tell these days and it's like looking at those thumbnails on video platforms, they're mostly bullshit, right? And even some of the channels that, on those that I like to watch liked.

Watching, I guess I should say at this point. They've joined the clickbait crowd, right? They've gotta have those thumbnails that, probably have nothing to do with the episode or very little, and it's a thumbnail that's greatly exaggerated and some stupendously stupid quote or facial expression, you've all seen them.

You know what I'm talking about, right? And it's the same problem. It's oh my god. Trying to find. Good content these days is hard. So I decided, you know what, I have to post to these platforms because I'm a content maker and I wanna put stuff out there and the only way to share it with folks is on social networks, sadly.

So I have to put it out there and I have tools that help me do that, but it's posting and it's not me going and reading them, which. Again, it's just sad that we've reached this point. Every new platform that comes out these days my personal favorite at the moment was Blue Sky because it was new and it took a little longer than usual for all the crap to get there, but it's there now.

And because of the way these apps work and these platforms, they basically to survive, they have to deliver. This crap to you. It's as simple as that. Whether it's advertising sponsored this or that, or whatever. They have to, it's the only way they can survive. I'm not necessarily begrudging them that, but it's the fact that people read the bullshit that's out there and they take that as fact.

That's they're frankly just can't think for themselves, of just calling it how it is. And on top of that, it's just. Crap that you see, which it's like those mad lib things, right? Fill in a name, fill in some kind of situation. And it's the same template for everybody. We've all seen it on all the platforms and it's just so ridiculous, but it really bugs me that I'm missing out on the good content.

So I just wanted to put that out there folks, please. Save yourself. Save your sanity. Keep your IQ nice and high. Don't spend time looking at all this crap. Just either skip on past or really rethink the folks that you're following on these networks and ask yourself do I need this? The doom scrolling thing is so bad enough these days that just we're all slowly deteriorating into zombies.

All right. Just quit it is my advice. You're better than that, right? Don't become one of the sheep, love to hear your thoughts on this. You can reach out to me at PeterWitham.com which is not a social network. It's just my website. That's it folks. Speak to the next one.
