Fragraphilia - The Podcast

There has been a gourmand awakening in our lives that involves Jelly Belly jellybeans, perfumes, and even a body butter. We're not sure what's going on but we're leaning into it. We also discuss a couple of perfumes we used to think were quite similar but realize we were way off. All that, a few movie references, and of course, The Game.

What is Fragraphilia - The Podcast?

Fragraphilia is the passion project of Jeff and Jane Dashley where they explore, express, and extrapolate as much as they can from the often mysterious and always magical world of perfume and fragrance.

Focusing more on luxury and niche fragrances, Jeff and Jane discuss what they've been wearing each week, news and trending topics that has caught their attention, as well as any impending new release that has them excited to try. In the final segment, they will each pull three fragrances from their sample collection for the other to blind test and offer their unadulterated opinion through a series of questions before each perfume is revealed.

About the hosts - Jane Dashley is a painter and artist with a long history in fashion blogging as Sea of Shoes. Jeff Dashley is a freelance web developer and designer. They live in the Dallas, Texas area with their son and three dogs.

Jeff:

Hello, everyone. This is Jeff.

Jane:

This is Jane.

Jeff:

And welcome back to Fragraphilia. I have a little thing. I've brought this up to you a couple times before, going off script here, but I'm getting kind of an aromatic perfume experience when I do my little Jelly Bellies combo.

Jane:

You should probably explain the Jelly Bellies situation.

Jeff:

So we, this will also be our Henry update. So during potty training, jelly beans became quite a motivator and...

Jane:

Everyone's tuning out right now.

Jeff:

And... Sorry. Just got that. Anyway, I've never been a jelly bean person or a jelly bay... Bellies person in all of my life, but since they're there, every now and then, I will try one or two.

Jeff:

And then I got in the habit of what would it be like to have like a grab bag. Let me just like grab six of them and eat them all at once and see what kind of weird combo my inner child is coming out. And I've noticed because there's so many parallels and flavorings and fragrance and things like that, that sometimes it can get pretty perfumey when I get like a combo of

Jane:

Oh, yeah?

Jeff:

Some of the grape meats, vanilla meats, like, the cinnamon. You start to

Jane:

That disgusting coffee flavored one.

Jeff:

The coffee flavored one. All of a sudden, I have, like, you know, I I have a a build, as they would say, a composition, and sometimes it's like, oh, yeah. There's that candy, you know, like, tuberose thing that we know from tuberose or a little bit of jasmine or, you know, the obvious ones, like you were saying, coffee or cinnamon, and and so I just wanted to make that note. I had written it down here

Jane:

because it's appropriate because we are going to be talking about gourmands a lot for once on this podcast, which is not a candy podcast, but a perfume podcast.

Jeff:

Yes. But it could be. I don't know. We ventured into tea there for a little bit. But before we jump into our topics at hand, there's a...

Jeff:

And October, there's always a lot of releases, and there's been a few that have been piquing my interest, starting with Bon Voyage by Maison Violette, which

Jane:

Sounds incredible. Yeah. I'm gonna... I'll read the notes for everyone.

Jeff:

Please read the notes. Yeah.

Jane:

Rum, cinnamon, dried fruits, canolais accord, vanilla, smoky woods, and blonde tobacco. Now, the canolais accord is going to mean a lot to Jeff, who is a very ambitious baker and has looked extensively into baking canolais, which is a very complicated process.

Jeff:

It's like a two day process. And you gotta have beeswax, and it's best to have the little copper canola tins.

Jane:

And you have to kind of bake them in like a coffin sort of situation, right?

Jeff:

No. You may have do

Jane:

a bad idea.

Jeff:

Yeah. I don't think that that's true, but you have to let the batter rest and all that kind of stuff, and that's why it goes over two days if you want to do it right. But anyway, for those that are familiar and aren't, you know or don't know, when you bake them and feel they're baked well, they have kind of a crusty, crispy exterior that's burnt sugar essentially, and it gives that kind of like burnt, smoky, marshmallowy marshmallow flavor and taste, but it's not overly sweet. It's not overly... That smoky element always gives it...

Jane:

The char of a marshmallow is kind of a perfect way to describe it.

Jeff:

The char of a marshmallow. Exactly.

Jane:

That's so exciting.

Jeff:

So I'm very curious about that, and I wasn't even thinking in terms of we'll be talking about gourmands a little bit more, and they're like... It's hit us so hard, people, the gourmand where we're getting to, that I'm looking down our list of show notes, and it's everywhere.

Jane:

They they finally won us over.

Jeff:

Yeah. And I'm I'm kind of embarrassed, and there's a little bit... I'm I'm ashamed. Not really. I'm kidding.

Jeff:

The other one is our dear friends, Mazendetto, are releasing a new one called Pinehurst, and I'm very curious about this because there's gonna be... It's a fruity leather, Burmese.

Jane:

Mhmm.

Jeff:

So you're gonna have... And I can't remember what a rambutan is, but it has, like, blood orange, pineapple in it, rose geranium, and then there's oud and leather, a pine accord in the base, cashmere in, which always makes me happy. But I'm very curious to see the direction because I love Mais and Dettto. We've been with them for a long time.

Jane:

I think a crucial part of understanding this perfume might be finding out what a rambutan is. You wanna run a Google search on that? Let's pause the episode.

Jeff:

Yeah. After a quick Google search, it is a spiky little fruit that has these, like, hairy rind. It's bright and red and then on inside it has, like, a translucent white flesh, kinda like a, almost like a lychee, I guess.

Jane:

This looks like a lychee adjacent situation.

Jeff:

Exactly. So, it's supposed to be very sweet, obviously, very juicy and tart, it's similar to lychee and grape with some acidic notes. So I'm picturing something. Lychee's been very popular in perfumery over the last couple years and it'll be interesting to see how that plays with the leather and oud and cyprile, which

Jane:

Seeing can be a seeing the words geranium and pineapple next to each other, that gets me excited.

Jeff:

It really does. I'm very excited about that one. And then finally, of the perfumes, Four Sounds by Lis. Now earlier in the year, they had Flower Glyph, which was great, and now they have Forest Sounds, which is u... Uzu, rain accord, ozone accord, green leaves, canopy accord, vetiver, loam accord, lot of accords, and ancient woods accord, and it feels like...

Jeff:

I don't know. It sounds like the Pacific Northwest to me. Very rainy and woody and green.

Jane:

Twilight vibes.

Jeff:

Fort... Twilight vibes. See, we are in the spooky season. Twilight vibes.

Jane:

Is twilight spooky or is it Mormon?

Jeff:

Oh, well, you've you've asked that question many times. But finally, and I think it comes out, we're recording on the seventh, it is officially launched on the eighth, the collab between Laundry Sauce and Arquiste, and they're doing a Misfit scented laundry goods, detergent and other things.

Jane:

That is so exciting.

Jeff:

The packaging, it looks like the Arquise packaging, you know, the kind of architectural kind of drawings and everything, and I'm pretty excited as you and I are both Misfit fans. We love Misfits. We've been... Misfit, we've been talking about it. We bought it in, like, 2019.

Jeff:

We've had it so long.

Jane:

Quite a dent in it. I wore that at some point this week. Also, you're such a fan of laundry products. Yes. You are Captain Diva.

Jeff:

I'm Captain Diva. That's what they call me. Should have that on a third or something. Captain Diva. So those are the...

Jeff:

I'm pretty excited about all three. I think we will probably have some samples on the way soon. And if anyone has thoughts on them already, would love to know. I think Pinehurst by Mazendetto is doing a pre order and I think they have some sort of scent bar event going on in Williamsburg or something like that in New York, so if you go to that and smell it, let me know. Hit me up.

Jeff:

I wanna hear all about it. Okay. I do wanna do a little side note because over the weekend, you went and stayed at your sister's house to babysit.

Jane:

And have a double feature horror night.

Jeff:

Double feature horror night. Jane's sister has seen every horror movie as Jane has found out.

Jane:

Every single one is crazy. Yeah. I asked for recommendations on Twitter and there were like some really deep cuts on there and she'd seen all of them.

Jeff:

Yes. So you guys are working on some kind of cataloging system so we can watch some

Jane:

the together.

Jeff:

But anyway, while you were there and I was here with Henry, all of a sudden you texted me pictures of two label less Serge L'Autom bottles

Jane:

Old school style.

Jeff:

Way back. Yeah. The the old export, the Palais bottles that used to be sold in The US.

Jane:

I mean, I... And I do have to complain about the old Serje bottles. The labels fell off really fast.

Jeff:

Yeah.

Jane:

All of them.

Jeff:

You have a couple that...

Jane:

Yeah.

Jeff:

Your original Fianna Guy.

Jane:

Fianna Guy. Yeah. Grieclair. Even, I I think, what's the other one that I have right now?

Jeff:

Homerie Turk?

Jane:

Yeah. That one, I think, barely holding on. Okay. So I did ask her, what are these? Apparently, Grieclaire and 05:00.

Jane:

And she's she's worn 05:00 for years. But I asked her, I forgot to steal them. I'm going to steal them, and we will talk about them on the show because it's been so long since I smelled Brie Claire. I put on 05:00 while I was there, and it was stunning.

Jeff:

I have never smelled that ever. It's I can't think of a It's time

Jane:

dusty and thick and, like, library ish.

Jeff:

I'm looking at the notes, which are listed tea, woodsy notes, cinnamon, pepper, honey, all the the classic search type of patchouli and cacao, candied ginger. I think I've always read it as the French word for gingerbread. I don't know if that is what is. Wow. But I don't think it is, although it could kinda be.

Jeff:

So I've just never... It was something back when we would have had access to it. I would have never even probably smelled it.

Jane:

It's cool. I think you like it.

Jeff:

Yeah. Gris Claire, I believe. I I have it in my mind, and I do feel like I have smelled that and almost bought it before, but I can't... Did they smell like they were in good shape?

Jane:

Oh, yeah. Oh, nice. Yeah. Perfect. Perfect shape.

Jane:

And I asked her, I'm like, do you still wear these? She's like, no, I don't really wear perfume because I don't got... She has a new newborn baby right now. So... But, yeah, she says she doesn't...

Jane:

Even before then, she doesn't really wear that much perfume.

Jeff:

Those... I wonder when those were bought. Probably like twenty twelve, 2014, somewhere around there. Wow. Yeah.

Jeff:

That's pretty cool.

Jane:

Okay. So should we get into

Jeff:

Let's get into

Jane:

juicy in this episode? I mean, we're kind of known gourmand skeptics. We have our problems with them. But on the last episode, we got to talk about Ain't That Sweet by Dia Sundurga. It's their newest release.

Jane:

And despite being a gourmand skeptic, it kinda won me over, probably because it's really, really heavy on the myrrh. So even though it has those kind of synthetic vanilla, achy accords that can really turn me off, there was enough pulling me in where I was like, okay. I'm gonna stick with this. So I said I was going to keep it by my bedside, and I did. And I wore it to bed, I mean, almost every night.

Jeff:

I feel like I've smelled it almost every day since our last Yeah. Episode.

Jane:

And it's a nice, cozy, snuggly scent. I love smelling it on my nightgown when I wake up. But I noticed something interesting last week. I, picked up my bottle of I Dream by Maison D'etto, which is a very interesting kind of aromatic warm milk leather perfume, but it's... It has those really strong...

Jane:

Whatever perfumery has decided the milk molecules are. It has it. They kind of used to sting my nose. And as much as I love Maison Dettos, I never could really get into this scent. But then I picked up the bottle, and I smelled it, and it smelled totally different to

Jeff:

me. Yes.

Jane:

And I found it like com... Completely seductive. I put it on and I was in love with it.

Jeff:

I found as well through the... No. Through the alleyways of ain't that sweet, a way to it was almost like I was smelling it differently than I had ever... And I'm speaking of I Dream by Maison Detho, whereas that was really just not a perfume for me. It was hard for me to really find something to, I don't wanna say like about it, it wasn't that I didn't think it was a good perfume, it was just not my type of perfume.

Jeff:

It was very big, all I could focus on was that milk accord, those amber vanilla accords. But something happened in the frequency of my nose and you and you were experiencing too with these... The the gourmand bomb No sinching. Sinching thing that we are usually scoffing at on the pod.

Jane:

I mean, I don't

Jeff:

scoff at it

Jane:

because I feel that way. Like, if other people like it, I'm I'm happy for whatever makes other people happy. And, you know, it's been I

Jeff:

stand correct.

Jane:

Been a boon to the perfume business that so many people's introduction to perfume has been through, you know, gourmand perfume. It's been nothing but great for so many small businesses. But, yeah, it was interesting to me that exposure completely changed my experience of it. And, also, I wore a tonka latte, which I've never had a problem with. That is like, thank you, Caitlin, so much for sending it to me last year.

Jane:

It's one that I have loved just from the beginning, but it smelled even better to me. And, yeah, I'll be interested to maybe try out some more gourmands. I should also note that this is all kind of happening on the heels of me. I was out of body lotion. So I picked up EOS.

Jane:

I love their moisturizers, even though they can be really strongly scented. But they had, their body butter, which I've never tried before. And I don't know why I did this. I guess I was feeling kinda crazy. I picked up picked up the scent creme de pistachio, which is strong as hell.

Jeff:

Yes.

Jane:

It's very strong. Like, I actually took a shower, like, two hours ago, and I still really smell like pistachio right now. So I kinda just... I have to go through that body butter. It's the only body lotion I have right now.

Jane:

So I guess I'm committed to the gourmand life for a while.

Jeff:

Well, I found that kind of spilling over into other things that... Speaking of houses that we love, but nobody has, you know, they don't bet a 100, you know, they're not perfect in the sense of they're not gonna make every perfume. Every perfume they make isn't going to be one that I love, but I've always struggled with Arquise Indigo Smoke. And then you wore it last week, and it was during this kind of like, woah, what's going on here? I'm starting to like some of these that I usually didn't gravitate towards, and I loved that being around the house.

Jane:

Yeah. That that's interesting because I don't consider that gourmand adjacent at all. I guess it's that aromatic tea note that you always object to.

Jeff:

Yeah. And they all kind of, to me, my nose puts them all in kind of the same little category, this kind of like there's a synthetic singe that happens somehow in kind of gourmands and in a lot of ambers, and I know Indigo Smoke doesn't really fit in that, but it was just noticing some kind of change in the way I am receiving perfumes right now, and I think it all stems from just kind of all that ain't that sweet. Yeah. For a week leading up to it, it did something that just changed how my olfactory system processes those smells.

Jane:

And then we had a conversation last night because you were wearing baby cat. It was your bedtime scent.

Jeff:

Mhmm.

Jane:

And I couldn't get over, like, how buttery and thick and oily it is. It is such a gourmand to me, baby cat. Yes. It's so sweet. And that's the reason, like, I've never really connected with baby cat.

Jane:

It's too sweet for me. It smells buttery. Like, there is something fatty dairy going on to me. Maybe I'm crazy. But I mean, like, to me, like, you do love a hormone perfume in that way.

Jeff:

Yeah. I just never get the buttery fatty side. I guess I get it, but I I always lean towards or the thing that I always pick up on is kind of the smokier side of it.

Jane:

Mhmm.

Jeff:

And that's the thing I've always loved about it, and maybe because I love that aspect of it, I don't pay attention to some of the other aspects of it.

Jane:

Yeah. I guess so.

Jeff:

And I don't notice that it does have the the buttery feel to it, but it does make me appreciate Vanilla Virtu, by paraphrase, so much more because

Jane:

I

Jeff:

enjoy that even more than baby cat. I've always loved baby cat. I was just... It it excited me because it was one, thank you, Trey, for getting that for us way back when. You can only get it overseas and he was kind enough to make it happen for us.

Jeff:

I I I've always loved it because to me it lived up to the hype and I thought that was a cool kind of thing about it. Yeah. But you smell vanilla verto and that's... That is more of a perfume for me.

Jane:

It has so much more of like...

Jeff:

Has the things that...... Baby cat has. Yeah. The kind of vanilla, the the breadiness, the the smokiness, but then you get these beautiful kind of... The clove and the cinnamon and these kind of dense fruity candy, or the kind of like...

Jane:

The yeasty breadiness.

Jeff:

Yeah. And the the fruitcake, the dried fruits. It's just such a... Josh really did a brilliant, brilliant work with Vanilla Vertu, and we are moving into that kind of cool time of the season here for us finally.

Jane:

Finally. I

Jeff:

can't wait to just wear that all the time. I did wear that this past week as well, But it's been really fun going through these, and it... I'm kinda curious what else I wanna try. I haven't really dove in

Jane:

Oh, I I brought some up to our podcasting room.

Jeff:

Oh, we have the Cirque du Soleil.

Jane:

I have I Dream. I have Tanka Latte. And then we have Cirque du Soleil, which is probably one of the only Brahmans in our wardrobe other than what we've been talking about, And I actually have always loved it.

Jeff:

You've always liked it. Yeah.

Jane:

Yeah. Because it's like, it's not trying to be complicated. It's like, yeah, this is like candy and apples and

Jeff:

Popcorn.

Jane:

Butter popcorn. And I think it does it really well. And I think we got this right around the time we moved into this house.

Jeff:

We did. Right.

Jane:

Was like one of the only perfumes that was kind of out. The rest were packed up. So I guess I have those nice cozy memories.

Jeff:

That's very true.

Jane:

Yeah.

Jeff:

It's Isaac from Flower Shop

Jane:

Yeah.

Jeff:

Sent it to us right as we were packing up to move to this house. And it is... Yeah. This it's well balanced because it has kind of that milky amber accord going through there, and I'm just smelling straight from the bottle. I'm not really spraying it because it's a big it's a big performer, so it's gonna it's gonna change maybe aspects of the game later.

Jane:

Don't wanna detonate that bomb.

Jeff:

But there's a a... I don't know the notes offhand, but there's a nice little fruitiness to it that adds a little interest

Jane:

It doesn't, like, I thought when, you know, I kind of read the perfume brief, I thought, I'm gonna hate this, but it's never bothered me. I've always, like, really liked it.

Jeff:

You've worn it. Yeah. It's not something you pull out a lot, but I would say maybe once a month. Would you say once a month?

Jane:

Maybe once every two months.

Jeff:

Yeah. I mean, still, that's probably more than a lot of others. But you've always worn out a lot more than than, we would probably think. Got a little dent in it and it's a beautiful bottle, so it's always great to have neglect.

Jane:

So we've turned over a new leaf.

Jeff:

I'm curious to see where this goes because we're gonna start getting into the holidays. There's gonna be some

Jane:

Yeah.

Jeff:

More

Jane:

Recommend us some good gourmands. I'm open minded now. Jeff, Jeff's making

Jeff:

a I'm not, and I do wanna just course correct a little bit on my end. Scoffing was the wrong word, and I, like you said, I would never judge anybody for anything like that. Scoffing was normally, what I meant was like, normally we would reject because it's usually not in our we're not usually looking towards gourmands when we're searching for perfumes to wear or smell. No. And now it's like, oh god, some some level's been unlocked or some door's been unlocked and...

Jane:

Yeah. Exposure therapy.

Jeff:

So... Okay. Now, for me, some of the things that have been a curiosity to me this week is a couple topics that... Or posts on IG... On Instagram that I found interesting is Petra's favorites had made a post about Eau Capitao by Diptyque, which you wear quite a bit, especially now going into these this season, and you wore it recently.

Jane:

Yeah. It's gorgeous. It always puts a pep in my step. It's a great daily driver.

Jeff:

It's a beautiful sheep, and it's, I don't know, it's one I wouldn't want to not have in our... And, you know, I'm so grateful we have that in our collection. You had the hair perfume at one point.

Jane:

No. I

Jeff:

never have. I would

Jane:

love it.

Jeff:

I thought we had another thing with our No.

Jane:

You're thinking of Otisans.

Jeff:

Oh. Yeah. Yeah. But anyway. Then some comparisons to Portrait of a Lady had come up and that is, we've talked about it endlessly, that that's always a perfume we want to have and think we've...

Jeff:

But we've always had samples and it's just something we have never went out of our way to buy, but we both love Portrait of a Lady. And I've always felt like we we have Eau Capitao, which is kind of a it doesn't have the range to me of Portrait of a Lady. Portrait of a Lady has a little bit more going on with Clove and

Jane:

Oh, I can't I can't really compare. Like, I I see there's, like, the same building blocks there, but then Portrait of a Lady is, like, nighttime. The cinnamon is really strong to me in Portrait of a Lady. It's a lot more amber resinous situation going on, whereas Eau Capita, like, it wears very light. Light, but like that deep oak moss going on.

Jeff:

Yeah. I feel like Eau Capitao stays woodier and mossier, and you still get the... You get kind of more of a straight rose. And then after that post, I put on Portrait of a Lady and I found that a little bit sweeter and juicier of a rose with a little bit more around the edges that was scratchy and staticky, but I have both of them here. Oh.

Jeff:

So I thought we would just kinda spray them for kicks and see...

Jane:

Why didn't we do this two minutes ago?

Jeff:

Yeah. Let it air out a little bit, but here is Portrait of a Lady.

Jane:

The throw of Portrait of a Lady is one of its greatest features.

Jeff:

Yes.

Jane:

Damn.

Jeff:

It's really

Jane:

There's a reason. Portrait of a lady is Portrait of a lady.

Jeff:

It makes me want to, like, just go out. It's like, let's go out. We'll get drinks, have dinner, run around town. It just... It feels alive.

Jane:

You do, like, I do feel like you need to be out on the town to wear it. I don't feel that way about many perfumes. Like, I'm always been a proponent of wear whatever you wear when you want to wear it, but I don't think I would ever wear a portrait of a lady at home.

Jeff:

It's... I I love doing these type of things because you realize how wildly different two things you thought smelled more similar are because it's just sprayed oak happy tile. It's like, one...

Jane:

Yeah.

Jeff:

It's so different. It's so much cleaner and fresher.

Jane:

It's sharp.

Jeff:

Yeah. Much more green.

Jane:

Yeah. And it's like, there's actually... It smells so different right now. I think that once they kind of open up, like, you you get it. But god, I love that perfume.

Jeff:

Yeah.

Jane:

And you have the hand cream for me. You got me the Eau Capitao hand cream.

Jeff:

Maybe that's what you think. Yeah.

Jane:

And whenever I use that hand cream, I always got compliments.

Jeff:

So the note list, just for reference, is Eau Capitao just lists, according to Tiptique's website, rose, bergamot, patchouli, pink peppercorn. It's Olivier Peychaud. And Portrait of a Lady lists rose, black currant, raspberry, clove, patchouli, sandalwood, and frankincense. Neither of them list oak moss. Oh, So I do list find that interesting.

Jeff:

Okay. And, yeah, boy, they're so different. And both very, very good. But, Eau Capitao makes me just... To me, it's an easier, more casual wear.

Jane:

Yeah. To me, it smells like a productive workday. To me, it's like one my most energetic pick me up fragrances.

Jeff:

I feel like we're running to the mall or we're gonna go do things or we have a meeting or something like that. You can wear Eau Claire Petal. It's it's a daily driver type of perfume.

Jane:

But it's also one that's like, it's always pleasant for other people to smell. So if I'm going to be in a situation where, you know, I'm in a slightly more crowded room, it's one I would feel comfortable wearing because it it wouldn't offend. It's not like wearing Musk Kupa Khan that we're about to talk about. New Puccioni.

Jeff:

Portrait of a Portrait of a Lady really does. It just, like, the second I smell it just makes me want to have an old fashioned cigarette. It's just like And just go be out. I wanna see darkness. I wanna see car lights driving around.

Jeff:

I wanna see patios and people milling about.

Jane:

You sound like a man who wants a babysitter.

Jeff:

Exactly. So, go ahead, write in, let us know if you can be here. Portrait of the Lady is so good that I'm willing to take in write in requests to watch Henry to go out. Anyone. Okay.

Jeff:

So, overall, my ruling is that they're not really comparable, because they

Jane:

don't really smell anything like each other. I'm glad you brought this up. Every time I've ever mentioned, oh, Capitao is kind of

Jeff:

like Portrait of a Lady, and that's good enough

Jane:

I mean, to if you go to like, on the bad website. If you go look up Au Capita, like, the conversation about it is...

Jeff:

It's always a... I mean, it's why we're here. I'm I'm...

Jane:

And we, like, we were in conversation with somebody on Instagram the other day. Yeah. They posted Au Capita, and we were having the Portrait of a Lady conversation.

Jeff:

Right.

Jane:

And they said that they prefer Au Capita.

Jeff:

Right. So... Okay. You have it here. So final ruling is they are not anything like each other.

Jeff:

So now the other one that I saw was Joseph Colburn had put up a photo of Mus Tonkin by Parfums Stumpier, which we love. And he and Say No to Ambroxan, huge Surge fan, got in a little conversation about... And I think Joseph in the actual post compares or makes references to Musk Kublakhan by Serge Lathon and Musk Tonkin. And it would just never occur to me to compare them. Now, this...

Jeff:

In this instance, it's like they seem like those two do seem like wildly different perfumes. So I'm not even quite sure why they were kinda going down that road, but they were talking about it and I just thought it would be very curious to kind of smell them because I think of just in my my brain, I would say, mustonken, since it's so floral, reminds me more of like tuberose criminal than it would ever Mus Kublakhan.

Jane:

Yeah. There's something bright going on with Mus Tonkin. It also has like a kind of a classic masculine accord too.

Jeff:

Yes. It's more of the masculine musk rather than, like,

Jane:

the skinny fluffy musk. Cleaner musk where, like, musk kublaikan is, like, it's it's your armpits. It's Yeah. Sweat and glands.

Jeff:

It's glandular. Yes. Yes. And not in a bad way. I mean, it's a very sexy...

Jeff:

I... We love this perfume, and we have them, and I just wanted to... Yeah. It just... Muskublikon, plus muskublikon, despite its legendary animal like, You know, it's always thought of, oh, it's so animalic and kinda funky and body and all that kind of stuff.

Jeff:

I've always found it to be kind of a light wear. It doesn't last that long and it's beautiful. I love it.

Jane:

This is like

Jeff:

favorite perfumes of all time, but it is

Jane:

Huge, huge bedtime scent in our house.

Jeff:

Yes.

Jane:

Okay. And Wait. I can kinda see, like, I get it. I do understand that conversation.

Jeff:

And I'd read a note list to everyone, but neither Serge nor Fragram Stampier really give... They give allusions to notes.

Jane:

Okay. And... I understand. I I can certainly understand. I would...

Jane:

Like, it wouldn't... In my mind, I would never think of them as similar, but I get it now because you wore Musk Tonkin last night, and it blew up the bedroom.

Jeff:

Yeah. It's so big, and it's so damp. You know?

Jane:

You... I came in and you were like on your phone and I smelled that smell and you know who you reminded me of in that second? Like, I was like, this smells like a a bratty Russian oligarch like that kid in in an Nora.

Jeff:

Oh, well, I don't like that.

Jane:

Well, no, you would never.

Jeff:

Well, right.

Jane:

Yeah. But But that is what it reminded me of.

Jeff:

It's just so much... There's so much depth to it, and it's so, like I said, damp. There's like a damp florist floor. Yeah. It's got all that musk.

Jane:

There's some green.

Jeff:

And it has that just jasmine and probably some orange blossom. It's very toothy.

Jane:

Okay. I'm gonna give you the side by side.

Jeff:

Yes. Give me the side by side because Mus Tonkin or Mus Kublai Khan, much as I love it, it's a pretty straightforward, like, musky, woody, classic pyramid or build. It just... It smells woody, smells musky, and there's, like, a civet cord, but it's pretty simple, if that's how you could describe it. I don't know.

Jeff:

I just... And it's... I think it wears close to you a lot. To me, it does. I mean, I'm sure people can smell a little bit of the sillage, but musk honking is filling the room.

Jeff:

They're entirely different. The only... There's there's the overlay of musk that you can smell, but musk tonken is so earthy green and dewy and all that kind of stuff.

Jane:

Oh, you know what I thought of last night also when you were wearing musk tonken? I put on Elle by Roquiste.

Jeff:

Yes.

Jane:

So, yeah, that was, a very very nice pairing.

Jeff:

That's such a gorgeous pairing.

Jane:

That is one of my favorite perfumes of all time. I love Elle. I love Elle and I love Eeya.

Jeff:

Get on it, laundry sauce. I want my I want my Misfit laundry detergent and my bad. And my Elle. Okay. That was fun.

Jeff:

I was really excited to kinda just compare those in real time because as in... I expected the differences between Mus Tonkin and Mus Kublai Khan, but I didn't expect such a wildly different experience between Portrait of a Lady and Eau Capitao. They're so different.

Jane:

Yeah. Mean, I think that those are ones that you also have to let open up a bit. But... Yeah. True.

Jane:

So different. But I I get it. I get the conversation. I've made that comparison, like, many times before. It's like that's you're going Portrait of Ladies, you're going out scent and then Eau Capitao.

Jane:

I don't know. For some people, probably wouldn't be a work scent, but for me it is.

Jeff:

Yeah, totally be a work scent.

Jane:

Would love to smell this anywhere.

Jeff:

I can tell you right now, out of all of them, Mus Tonkin is the most powerful.

Jane:

It's Tom and Harry.

Jeff:

I mean, it is... I feel like we need to shut down. Yeah. We're not we're not gonna be able to do any game playing with that going on. Moving on to since we've been testing out and comparing, what have we been wearing?

Jeff:

And I'll let you go first.

Jane:

Oh, okay.

Jeff:

I haven't even seen your list, so I'm so excited to see what you've been.

Jane:

Okay. Well, obviously, I talked about this. Ain't that sweet? Can I run through the note list for everyone really quick?

Jeff:

Please.

Jane:

I think it's like myrrh, nutmeg, praline, vanilla, amber, condensed milk. Yeah. Nutmeg. Delicious.

Jeff:

Yeah. That nutmeg does some work, some lifting on there too.

Jane:

Nutmeg is crazy. I made pumpkin bread last week, and I used pumpkin... I used nutmeg as my only pumpkin spice, and it made a really gorgeous pumpkin bread, didn't you think? He said it was my best.

Jeff:

He? Or I said. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I I did.

Jeff:

I was thinking of... I was about to ask. Why did you make pumpkin bread, sweetie?

Jane:

Oh, for the witch.

Jeff:

For the witch. Obviously. Henry...

Jane:

Oh, sorry. For this... If we start to explain the witch, we're gonna be here a while. Basically, I made an offhand comment one night when my son was told me he was scared in a very like fake way where he was just trying to not go to bed. He was trying to delay bedtime.

Jane:

And so I got out my phone and I'm like, wait, wait, I'll make a call. And I I knew he liked witches. So I was like, hey, hey, miss witch, can you fly over on your broomstick and stay outside his door all night and protect him? And he loved that. And I didn't expect to hear about it every night for the next six months.

Jeff:

Yeah. And we're still doing it.

Jane:

Yeah. And now our neighbor is involved. Our wonderful neighbor, Karen, who set up these amazing witch decorations in her yard, and she pointed one in the direction of our house, and she left a present from the witch, an advent calendar, on the porch today. So he... He's he's a spoiled boy.

Jeff:

He is. But the pumpkin bread is the offering we have to present for

Jane:

the Because there's also... Like, he writes her letters, and so I have to keep correspondence.

Jeff:

Yeah.

Jane:

And the letters have to be on green paper. Yes. I really feel

Jeff:

so confident. He's like, before he goes to bed, can you call the witch and ask for a note? I want a note, please.

Jane:

I want she to leave me a note. That's a

Jeff:

good I want she to leave me a note.

Jane:

Okay. Okay. That was a detour.

Jeff:

Sorry.

Jane:

Oh, today, I went to the arboretum with my sister and my beautiful baby niece, and we had a great time. I wore waterfall by right of way, which was such a nice wear.

Jeff:

It smells so good.

Jane:

Be amongst flowers. It was very light. I love the aquatic elements of it, and the arboretum is by the lake too. Right. And you really, like, smell the water.

Jane:

So that was gorgeous. Really love that. Also, spooky season. I have been wearing Carnival of Souls by Marissa Zappas. And I I was trying to kill time one day, and I I just needed to rest my hands.

Jane:

I couldn't be drawing anymore. So I put on the movie Carnival of Souls. It was my third watch. That is a fucking amazing movie. I love that movie.

Jane:

But watching it while I was wearing the perfume was so fun. I think that we need more movie perfumes for these pairings. So I was thinking, you know, like, what other horror... I think horror movies are perfect for it. Or at least that's where my mind is right now.

Jeff:

Yeah. You're very... You're you're looking for a lot

Jane:

of Yeah.

Jeff:

Spooky movies. I see you have Candyman listed.

Jane:

Yeah. Thought you... Go and Gourmand Candyman. Yeah. That's why I thought, like, yeah, scary candy perfume.

Jane:

The crowd goes wild.

Jeff:

I want children of the corn and for it to be... Oh, what's my regime de fleur? Gold leaves? Gold... Is that what it is?

Jane:

The tortilla note?

Jeff:

Yes.

Jane:

Okay.

Jeff:

But it also smells kind of like, you know, it smells like a little bit of corn.

Jane:

Oh, yeah. Totally.

Jeff:

And again, shouting out Christine. Christina from Dry Down Diaries who sent us a sample because it is long discontinued now. Hopefully, it'll come back at some point. I love that perfume, and it smells as good as Remember.

Jane:

Yeah. It smells so good. It's nice to smell it again. Thank you, Christina. I also thought Sunset Boulevard, has anyone done a perfume of that?

Jane:

Come on.

Jeff:

It's right I mean, talk to Marissa. She'd be perfect.

Jane:

Yeah. Yeah. The Norma Desmond perfume.

Jeff:

But you're... Wow. You're you're pairing perfumes to the arboretum. You're pairing them to movies. I like where you're at.

Jane:

Yeah. Yeah. It's nice. I'm very connected to my perfume wearing experience.

Jeff:

I am not as exciting. I went with my this past year's favorite, Fuma Bat. We got a little crisp weather going on, so I wanted to bring out some of my woody incense. And this is black pine and carnation. You have frankincense, vetiver, and leather, oakmoss.

Jeff:

I love this perfume. It's a perfect perfume for me. It's so easily wearable, but it also has range. You can wear it out to dinner. It feels debonair

Jane:

It does.

Jeff:

And fancy. You find it sexy. It looks like a...

Jane:

That's like an Edward Gorey illustration to me is the vibe.

Jeff:

Really? Yeah. I don't know. I feel like it's a

Jane:

A spooky handsome man.

Jeff:

I feel like it's a Japanese black and white film.

Jane:

Oh, I get that too.

Jeff:

Yeah. So

Jane:

It's you smell best in that. That is the best fragrance on you, period.

Jeff:

Speaking of movie combos and Japanese films... No. It's not Japanese film. It's a Hong Kong film. I finally, being a movie buff that I am, have never seen In the Mood for Love, and I finally watched it this week.

Jeff:

And I know that Gutal's daughter, she did a perfume that we, I think, had in the game once that is inspired by that movie.

Jane:

Oh my gosh. And then

Jeff:

And now, I mean, I wanna go find that perfume in our samples so that I can... While that movie is still fresh in my mind, which it will be forever because it is... Everything... If if you've only heard of the movie and seen references to it but never have seen it, Everything everybody ever says about how beautiful it is, how heartwarming and heartbreaking and well done, how well filmed it is is there's no overstatement there. It is such a beautiful, beautiful film, and it's so wonderful.

Jeff:

And it's... The performances are great.

Jane:

Can I pause for a second? Please. There's Isabelle Isabel Doyen perfume, did you say? Goutar.

Jeff:

Goutar. Yeah.

Jane:

Okay. Also, there's the Corinne Routfeld Wong Kar wai.

Jeff:

Oh, yeah. That's right. Okay.

Jane:

Oh, we also don't have Orson by Corinne Royfeld, speaking of movie perfumes.

Jeff:

Yeah. I mean, it's just all points... All Corinne's perfumes are on the want list at this point. There's legit, like, four just must haves. And probably, you know, there's a couple we haven't even smelled, so Morrison being one of them.

Jeff:

Okay. I did wear Misfit as well, going back to my list of scents of the week. French lavender, Ambrellt, patchouli, tonka bean, tolu balsam. It always... The thing that I find so wonderful about it is to me, it feels very powdery.

Jeff:

I I see a lot of people refer to it as it being soft, but that softness, I think, me translates to powdery mixed with kind of that just scratchy, patchouli, and it just... It's a beautiful perfume and I love wearing it. And that also feels like a night out, and so I put it on the other day in the middle of the day and I was like, man, feel like now I wanna make plans. So again, our email address for babysitting is, you know, but... So I'm very curious to see

Jane:

how that translates to a laundry detergent. I know. I'm kinda... It's a wild one for me. Like, if you were going through the Arquise line, I'm surprised they didn't do, Architects Club, you know?

Jeff:

Oh, yeah. Yeah. Boy, that'd be a crowd pleaser. I was Yeah. Thinking suede would be a good one?

Jane:

Yeah. It's an off the wall choice.

Jeff:

Even... What's the one I love? It'd be hard to do, but

Jane:

Louis Louis haters in this climate.

Jeff:

The Louis Glad

Jane:

to see them embrace it.

Jeff:

Dior. The kind of, like, smoky Yeah. Orange blossom. That's... That would be really good.

Jeff:

Get us in the room. We'll we'll start mapping it out. And, okay. And then finally, Beau by Lise. It's just something about when the weather starts to get a little cooler.

Jeff:

That smells like just a campfire in the very, very far distance or or actually like a fireplace. It's just kind of like you see the smoke drifting through the foggy woods at night and it starts coming your way. And it's not too cold to where you don't wanna just stand out and enjoy it, but you have like a light jacket on and you see just... It feels so natural and it... And extremely synthetic at the same time.

Jane:

Yes. It's... That part. I love it.

Jeff:

That play to me has always been so cool because it can feel so natural and so visceral of things that actually happen, and then it also can just, like, sting with that kind of synthetic

Jane:

And did wooden you say you you wore the perfume and we burned the candle?

Jeff:

Yeah. We've been burning the candle quite a bit. So...

Jane:

Which it fills the entire house.

Jeff:

It does, and it's wonderful.

Jane:

You put it on on a rainy day. It was raining, and Henry and I made that port to watch movies. Yes. And there was bow everywhere. It was very cozy.

Jeff:

Yeah. Was it was great. Okay. Wanna get to the game?

Jane:

Yes.

Jeff:

Let's do it. I have just sprayed Jane's first perfume of the game.

Jane:

This is beautiful and very unusual.

Jeff:

Mhmm.

Jane:

There's a hard to place kind of fruit note going on here. I don't know if it's like orange juxtaposed against something woody.

Jeff:

Oh, there is. There's a blueberry note in here.

Jane:

What? Yeah. You're kidding me.

Jeff:

I just copy and paste. I rarely read the notes. So I was...

Jane:

Oh. Okay. But that is actually, Jeff, that is actually so funny that it's blueberry because immediately when I smelled this, I got this very distinct vision, this very distinct hue of blue. So that is kinda weird.

Jeff:

Well, I I... Let me give you. It's iridescent ink. That could be blue... Well, I guess it'd be iridescent, but blueberry, honeysuckle, Mirabel plums.

Jeff:

So you're getting more fruit. Jasmine sambac and pollen.

Jane:

Lis was cooking when they made this. Yeah. I love this perfume. This is really good.

Jeff:

See, I knew when I said honeysuckle, I was in trouble.

Jane:

No. No. It was the first... No. You were a Dessa Ink.

Jane:

Yeah. One you kinda remember.

Jeff:

Yeah. That's true. So this is Flower Glyph by least.

Jane:

Too. Like, I always remember a blueberry note.

Jeff:

Referenced earlier, like a good callback.

Jane:

It is so interesting. I mean, I honestly, like, I thought this would be something we would not like at all.

Jeff:

I didn't. I was hoping that I'm always on that quest to find the magnolia, but I also really like honeysuckle. And when I saw it was released and that was kind of the hero note mixed with the jasmine, I always loved plum. Of all the fruity kind of stone fruit, if you're going to incorporate... Because it always works well with florals and leather, and so I always love to see plum.

Jeff:

Blueberry, was like, well, I don't know about that, but because what what is that even? I mean, blueberries

Jane:

They don't taste like anything.

Jeff:

They barely taste like anything, and they don't really have an aroma, so

Jane:

They have a a memorable hue.

Jeff:

They do.

Jane:

Yeah. This is But I love it. Yeah. This is so great, and it's like a very modern composition, you know?

Jeff:

It's very,

Jane:

very Innovative modern composition.

Jeff:

But it also feels not but, but... And it also just feels gardening. It feels like a natural space to me. It's... I...

Jeff:

Feels like you can smell the flowers in bloom.

Jane:

Yeah. I mean, like, iridescent ink, honeysuckle, and blueberry. It's like a very charming combination of notes.

Jeff:

It also feels like it could be a tea somehow.

Jane:

You and your tea?

Jeff:

Yeah. I don't know. I love it.

Jane:

You tend to drink just like oolongs and

Jeff:

Oolongs now. Yeah. I love oolongs and Japanese green teas.

Jane:

Yeah. Love oolong.

Jeff:

Okay. My turn.

Jane:

Okay. I have just sprayed Jeff his first tint.

Jeff:

You're going gourmand. I have... This smells like butterscotch and celery seed.

Jane:

Woah.

Jeff:

A little bit of burnt sugar.

Jane:

No. Totally. I get the celery seed big time.

Jeff:

Yeah. The celery seed is there. The maple syrup. Yeah, there's this just, but it's not maple syrup, it's around there, and it's a little butterscotchy.

Jane:

What note smells like maple syrup famously?

Jeff:

Oh, well, now I can't think because I'm trying to talk in also. Okay, sorry. Was just, you give me Immortelle. Little

Jane:

This is an Immortelle perfume.

Jeff:

Yeah, it's hard to answer kind Sorry, question a I've done that, I you're processing this as

Jane:

a head scratcher.

Jeff:

It's very... There's a lot of woodiness to it. There's a dry, like, Palo Santo note to it. It's very, like, you can... It's starting to the immortal and the kind of maple syrup and the butterscotch and the kind of charred sugar is starting to lessen and it's becoming much more woody.

Jeff:

And it's becoming... Yeah. It's very Palo Santo incense y. It's interesting. It is a...

Jeff:

Speaking of fireplaces, it has a little bit of that kind of like fireplace.

Jane:

Yes. It totally does.

Jeff:

It feels like an old... It feels like a... I mean, yeah. I could see where that's in there. If if it's in...

Jeff:

Because it feels like you're in a log cabin. Yes. And there's like old dusty rugs in there.

Jane:

I'm drinking hot chocolate right now and this goes really well with it.

Jeff:

I think at first, when I first smelled it, I was immediately, it had me ajar, you know? It just had me kind of like a little off balance to where it's like, I'm not gonna... I typically don't like the celery seed immortal because it has a little... Anytime I get that, I start to... You start getting that kinda ghanomade ghanomade territory and that always kinda bugs me.

Jeff:

But this is dying down and the dry down is so good to the the way it's drying down. I'm still not sure it's a perfume that I would wanna wear, but experiencing the dry down go from this kind of really big blast of that maple syrup, butterscotch and celery seed to this Palo Santo that has these earthy, ambery, yet very dry woody notes that now it's getting a little green, which is kinda cool.

Jane:

Do you want me to call out

Jeff:

the notes? Please. Is frankincense on it?

Jane:

No. Bergamot, immortal, amaris, benzoin, am am I am amaris? I never know.

Jeff:

Yeah. Amaris.

Jane:

Benzoin, vanilla, tonka bean, labdanum, amber, and chocolate. That amaris, like, whenever it's in something, it's really loud and noticeable to me, and it's That this for me.

Jeff:

Labdanum is the the the powderiness that was creating what I was thinking of as incense. So that's why I was thinking it was frankincense, but it's actually more softer than that.

Jane:

But it's smoky, like who knows what they put

Jeff:

in here. It's really, really nice. Like, as it's where it's at right now, I I would like to be in a cold day in January wearing this perfume.

Jane:

Yeah. Deep What is it? Deep winter. This is Le Ode des Immortelles by Voyage's Imagineers.

Jeff:

Oh, Voyage's Imagineer is the Gatall daughter.

Jane:

With Isabelle Isabelle Doyen. Yes. Camille and... Emile Gatall and Isabelle Doyen.

Jeff:

It's very... I like it. I really do.

Jane:

I was taking a risk. I felt like with Immortel, it was very fall vibes, and then with the gourmand side of it kind of fit into our conversation.

Jeff:

What year?

Jane:

2023.

Jeff:

Oh, okay. Just coming out of the pandemic. They were probably making it during or, you know, it was in process during the pandemic. This would have tested your cabin fever. Okay.

Jeff:

I'm... Dark Horse favorite for me tonight.

Jane:

Wow, really?

Jeff:

I thought the dry down was spectacular. Like, really, it's not often that we do this, we get a lot of the top notes. We get an appearance of the bass notes because we're doing it so quickly and we're spraying it in real time. But this, there was a real kind of just, you were going down an escalator and it was just like rhythmic and patterned and it was just going down that note list.

Jane:

Like backrooms?

Jeff:

Like backrooms. It, no, backrooms had no pattern. It was all over the place. It was being, anyway, I really love the dry down

Jane:

of this. Horror movie perfume idea.

Jeff:

Yes. This is, yes, this is a backrooms perfume. Okay. Your second one. I have just sprayed Jane her second perfume.

Jane:

I I want to say huge mistake spraying Mus Tonkin, huge mistake starting the game with Le Ode de Immortelle because those were overpowering perfumes, and I feel like it's going to taint my experience of this, and I'm smelling this. It's a dabber.

Jeff:

It's a dabber, so it's on skin.

Jane:

I I smell chocolate. I don't know if that's because I've been drinking hot chocolate, and you just sprayed chocolate perfume. Is there chocolate in here?

Jeff:

I'm going to give you the rundown right now. There's cocoa beans.

Jane:

Oh, okay. Okay. I'm not crazy.

Jeff:

Bitter orange, candied mandarin, dried roses, aged cognac, tobacco leaves.

Jane:

Tobacco's going crazy here.

Jeff:

Torrified almonds. Not sure what that is. Torrified? Cocoa beans, oak wood, patchouli, ambergris, blonde tobacco, and soft leather.

Jane:

Okay. I smell the ambergris big time. There's something like

Jeff:

You brought up

Jane:

the leather. Oceanic going on.

Jeff:

You brought up the leather before we started hitting record.

Jane:

Okay. So this smells crazy. Smells good. If I had to contextualize this, like, in the history of perfume, this feels like a niche perfume of now. Is this like a a modern niche perfume?

Jeff:

No. The original version was composed in 1925.

Jane:

I mean But it's in That's also kinda like fits into the vibe, you know. It's like the person who's buying this is a very, what's the word, a well versed... What's the the thing of well read? But for people with with perfume. I'm not sure.

Jane:

People who are very well versed in perfume are the only ones buying this.

Jeff:

Connoisseur?

Jane:

Connoisseur. Thank you.

Jeff:

You're welcome.

Jane:

Okay. That makes sense.

Jeff:

Does it remind you of anything? Think when I tell you what

Jane:

in this Paris?

Jeff:

Yeah. Oh, yeah. It does, actually. I think when I tell you what this is, you're going to be like, oh, really? And I think it has been tainted by that being a dabber and this room full of these We bombastic

Jane:

might have to leave this room for

Jeff:

a minute. And it's I'm just gonna tell you.

Jane:

Please.

Jeff:

It's Horizon by Orisa Legrand. So it's their you know, it's almost like psychedelic.

Jane:

Okay. Man.

Jeff:

It's much more leathery psychedelic and it's like

Jane:

How did

Jeff:

I I can smell it because I I smell

Jane:

it or patchouli is like

Jeff:

Yeah.

Jane:

Like hitting me over the head and how did I not immediately go there? But, yeah, this room is not not ideal. That's a very lovely perfume.

Jeff:

It's a very...

Jane:

I'm surprised it's like as popular as it is in the house, you know?

Jeff:

Mhmm. It's really like, it's dank. It's woody. It's It's patchouli. It's chocolatey.

Jeff:

Yeah. There's a sweetness to it. It wears heavy. Even just trying the dabber earlier today, it got on my, like, thumb area. And when we were walking around with Henry doing our skeleton walk, looking at all the neighbors houses with giant skeletons in them that we have to go talk to every day.

Jeff:

I could... I was getting whiffs of it, it's like, that barely got it on me.

Jane:

Yeah. I feel like if you wore this around me, I would go crazy for it and be like, what are you wearing? You need that The

Jeff:

want list and... No. Yeah. I... It...

Jeff:

What's one we've talked about about purchasing in the past. So I... When I was going through the samples, looking for samples, I was I ran across it.

Jane:

It's good. I, you know, I feel like we've just smelled so many better perfumes recently.

Jeff:

Yeah. Well, that's true.

Jane:

On this podcast in the game, it's like, I love it. It's not an immediate need. I think we have a pretty good patchouli situation going on in our collection.

Jeff:

Patchouli's were set.

Jane:

I feel like I could even maybe approximate this with some careful layering.

Jeff:

Probably. Yeah. I mean, it really does kinda smell like psychedelic. You just kinda make it a little bit woodier and, yeah, a little smokier.

Jane:

Yeah. Awesome. I think that I've... Room is tainted. You should wear it next week and

Jeff:

We'll see. Yeah. Okay. Alright. Next one for me.

Jane:

The Fragraphilia room is up in flames right now. There's too many strong perfumes going.

Jeff:

But you...

Jane:

I just sprayed Jeff his second perfume from the game.

Jeff:

And, yes, I am... It is... As I said, it's like, if this is your second one, what's your third one? So you can be even more. Usually, save like the strongest one for the last and I think I know what this is and I love it.

Jeff:

It's very leathery. It's very, Oh, God. It's so strong and cool, like, it feels warm.

Jane:

Nice and mulchy.

Jeff:

It's mulchy. Yeah. It smells like a pile of mulch and leather and rain and smokiness again, like, it's like that rain put out the campfire that was keeping you warm while you were, I don't know, stacking your sod in a leather jacket or something.

Jane:

It's a little Ichabod Crane with it. Right?

Jeff:

It's a little Ichabod Crane, but it's... I think this is one of those perfumes as well that you wear for each other. Like, I would wear this with you if maybe we were going out on a date night. Like, I I I would wear it on a date night, but mostly, I'd probably wear it in the house. Like, it's so strong.

Jeff:

It's not friendly. It's not like, hey, this is like someone that's, I don't

Jane:

know, you It would it would repel in a way. You would not wanna be stuck

Jeff:

in an Uber with me wearing this No. If you didn't love perfume. Yeah. If I was the driver of that Uber, I would crack the windows, probably.

Jane:

Okay. You have to factor this room in. But I'm like, this, you know, this this has a little bit of

Jeff:

of, like, street tar to it as well.

Jane:

Oh, yes. Yeah.

Jeff:

And that's been... That is in contrast to the other things where we're talking about, it's like kinda cold and rainy and damp and mulchy. The tar aspect of it is like tar in midsummer when the sun's been baking down at a 100 degrees for five days straight. It's just... That part's hot.

Jeff:

And this is... I can't think of the name of it, but it's a Mayo Fucciani.

Jane:

It's last season.

Jeff:

Last season.

Jane:

I really think was ball.

Jeff:

And this was, like, last year, right, 2025 release? So it literally probably was last...

Jane:

Well, I think it's, like, represents, like, that, like

Jeff:

The PetraCore is strong in this. Like, I'm getting a lot of it right now.

Jane:

Yeah.

Jeff:

It's good. I really, really like it. And I remember when we received the sample really, really liking it. I would have it. I would like, I would get it, like, it's not high on the want list, it's not anything I'm gonna sacrifice other things

Jane:

We need for to have a want list conversation. We're getting into Christmas, so... Yeah. We need to sort out our priorities.

Jeff:

But I'll put it this way. I saw Almond Suede by Arquist on Reddit the other day. This guy was... Or gal, was clearing out their collection. And Arquist Almond Suede was just sitting amongst them, just dozens and dozens of perfumes, all by its lonesome.

Jeff:

And all these other ones I could check back every hour or so and they're just getting checked off. Nobody's getting that. It was a $100 and it was barely touched, like...

Jane:

You're silly. You should done that.

Jeff:

I should've, but, you know, there's just so many other things and we gotta...

Jane:

And we're... We need to figure out a new perfume storage situation. We are officially out of room.

Jeff:

Well, yeah. But anyway, if last season showed up in that type of context, that's when I would probably go for it. I don't know if I'd spend like... I don't know how much Mayo's are. Are they like $2.50 or something?

Jane:

Mayo come up on Reddit a lot? No. Yeah. Figured not.

Jeff:

No. But I like I like this perfume a lot. Okay. Your final one.

Jane:

Okay.

Jeff:

I have just sprayed Jane's third scent after we had to go downstairs away from this room to spray.

Jane:

Yeah. And it was a nice a nice break. Yeah. But it it smells good. Let's see.

Jane:

Now that my nose is a little bit more refreshed, my nose is very tired right now. When we smelled all of the perfumes before we did the game Mhmm. That kinda got me overworked. But this is a very horsey perfume. Very horsey.

Jane:

Like, grass and just straight, sharp, sharp leather.

Jeff:

Wow.

Jane:

Am I totally off base?

Jeff:

You're not totally off base. I will say this, the tagline for this perfume is a lemon incense oud.

Jane:

Oh, okay. Like, that's weird.

Jeff:

But I get what you mean by the horse because especially on first brist types like this....

Jane:

How that could approximate. You know, how kind of like, what is the thing? If you put like cinnamon on lemon, it tastes like Coke. Maybe if you put lemon incense in oud, it smells like a horse saddle.

Jeff:

It does. But when you first spray it especially, it gives that kind of like, we're ottoman bipart, you know, that kind of like soft suede leather saddle.

Jane:

Kind of pictured leather. I pictured this scent being in that family, but based on the notes that you just gave me, I guess it's not. Okay. Do I like this? Would I wear it?

Jane:

Yeah. I think actually I would. This... To me, like, this is the perfume you're wearing when you're wearing Comme des Garcons or Yoyo Yamamoto. You know what I mean?

Jeff:

Yes.

Jane:

It fits perfectly. It's kind of like... It's very textural. There's some facets of it that are very light.

Jeff:

It feels... Yeah.

Jane:

It's perfect what is. That are also, like, very dark too, but, not in a heavy, heavy way.

Jeff:

I'll give you the note list because it it reads heavier than it is. Bergamot, sweet orange, lemon, lavender, beeswax, myrrh, cedarwood, incense, cinnamon, gaiac wood, and then the base, oud, patchouli, sandalwood, amber, and musk.

Jane:

The patchouli is is pretty crank in here too. I love it. Tell me what it is.

Jeff:

This is Veleahite or Videlite by Rainier Jay. It's their most recent one. It was just released this year.

Jane:

What's the name again?

Jeff:

Vel... Velite? Veliot?

Jane:

Okay. I'll I'll Block? Look what that looks like on paper.

Jeff:

I'll show it to you what it looks like on paper. It's down there at the bottom.

Jane:

Oh, that is a very confusing... I would have no idea how to pronounce that.

Jeff:

Yeah. No one would trust me with it. I can tell you that.

Jane:

They shouldn't. I I really like this.

Jeff:

I really do too.

Jane:

I love Rainier Jay.

Jeff:

I love the line.

Jane:

Yeah. Think that is a stellar line.

Jeff:

And I I forgot that... I saw that was... When that was released, and it... The first chance I had to order as a sample, I I did and forgot all about it.

Jane:

I have to say this is, like, heads above everything else. This is my favorite perfume of the night. Nice. Like, if I I could see putting this on a Christmas list. You know, to me, like, this, it it shares maybe not smells, but, like, mood wise, it kind of fits in that fumabat territory.

Jeff:

Yeah. It reminds me of the reason why you might want a Naomi Good Sir perfume, except this is better.

Jane:

Oh, fighting words, but I agree.

Jeff:

Not better in the sense of... I shouldn't have said that. This is softer and more... There's more di- it just has more of a dynamic range to it. There's so much more going on, whereas I always feel like naming a good sir is like, this is my leather, This is my horse perfume and it comes right at you.

Jeff:

It's very direct. There's a lot of synthetic notes that you have to kinda get through to get to the the main perfume part of Naomi Good Sir. Whereas this is... It starts off, you get all of those citruses up top while kinda meeting some of the earthy leathery notes. It has a little bit of barnyard to it, but it's very brief and it's not even that.

Jeff:

It's more of like woody and wet hay and horses. It's it's

Jane:

it's interesting. It's amazing because they are such heavy notes, but this manages to have like a soft landing somehow.

Jeff:

Yes. It's very soft to me.

Jane:

Love that. That is an amazing perfume. I would add that when... Since we're going to reassess our want list, I would certainly put this in the running. This is cool and I can see coming through.

Jeff:

This is a cool line.

Jane:

Yeah. And I've been so happy like, with... What's the one that we have? Jasmine.

Jeff:

Oh, Jasmine comma. That

Jane:

is... We've blown through that too even though our bottle's falling apart.

Jeff:

That is a downside. Yeah.

Jane:

That's been like... That does almost kinda make me be like, you guys improved your packaging?

Jeff:

I hope so. Yeah. That thing, like, flies off at

Jane:

you. Yeah. Amazing. Thank you. Good.

Jeff:

Good. Alright. Last one for me.

Jane:

I have just sprayed Jeff his last scent of the game.

Jeff:

This is what we needed because it is so cool and green and cooling, like, somewhat chalky to cut through all this kind of, like, thick fire and brimstone we've

Jane:

been

Jeff:

funneling into this room. You know, initially, the first impression that I had was... Some people may know this, grandmothers or great grandparents or whatever, they used to have these candies that were kind of like chalky little squares and they had some kind of like gel in the middle of them. They're real small. They were things you would eat after dinner, like almost after dinner mint styles and they're...

Jeff:

I don't know. They're real chalky and chewy and they have like a little gumminess in the in the center. Smells just like those. They're, like, pink and green and white and yellow. Now it is getting a little woody and grassy.

Jeff:

There's like a a dried hay like quality to it, but it's not too dry. It's very green. And the opening was so nice, and again, it could be that we just needed something like this, like an amuse bouche type of thing or a palate cleanser to where we wanna just, like, create the space for a new direction or a new smelling experience after all the others. It's really... There is a little bit of leatherness to it, a little bit of burnt wood now as it's going through

Jane:

I also just want to say you called out that kind of candy thing. Mhmm. And that's very relevant to the note list. There's like a definitely a kind of gooey sugar thing going on here.

Jeff:

I think this is actually my favorite of the night.

Jane:

It's kind of amazing. Right?

Jeff:

It's really, really good.

Jane:

I will tell you, I didn't even smell this before I put it in the game. I put it in as a wild card, and I'm loving it.

Jeff:

Can you give me the note list?

Jane:

Yes. And the note list is insane. Like, reading it on... This is... You'll see why I wanted

Jeff:

to put it in seems like an insane perfume. Yes. Like, in the most wearable way. This isn't crazy or avant garde or anything. It's just like, wow.

Jeff:

This is... There's a lot going on and it's pretty awesome.

Jane:

Okay. Ginger, condensed milk, vetiver apopenax. That's it.

Jeff:

Oh, well, I'm... Like, the vet... Okay. So I feel good about, like, the dried grasses and stuff.

Jane:

Yeah. You realize you're pulling out everything. Yeah.

Jeff:

The candied ginger. Wow.

Jane:

Not candied ginger. It's just ginger. Oh, just ginger. So, like, together that kind

Jeff:

of Yeah. I see what

Jane:

you're saying. Candy accord, you know. Oh.

Jeff:

There's a little bit of kind of like boot leather quality to Yeah. This is by far... I I would would

Jane:

own this sure.

Jeff:

Think like this is... I own this.

Jane:

This is for sure want list quality.

Jeff:

We've become too good at picking perfumes for each other in the sense that...

Jane:

Because I'll tell you, when we order this perfume, we're gonna have to order another one from it.

Jeff:

Okay. Who is this?

Jane:

So this is Universal Flowering.

Jeff:

Oh, wow.

Jane:

And this is poems one through 12. Really? Yeah.

Jeff:

Wow. This is really good....

Jane:

Do it. This is incredible.

Jeff:

This is really good. We've had that sample for, like, five years. How do we

Jane:

not has just been smelled us. Right here, under our noses. Okay.

Jeff:

This is by far my favorite.

Jane:

I think, like, of all of the ones that you sprayed for me too, this is my favorite. I think I like this more than the Rainier Jay.

Jeff:

This universal flowering?

Jane:

Yeah. It's just a lot... It's an idea I haven't encountered before.

Jeff:

It... Yeah. It is unlike anything that we have too.

Jane:

Mhmm. Yeah.

Jeff:

Like, we have suede leather, saddle leather perfumes. We have... I don't know if we do have Emmartel perfume.

Jane:

And it's so vetiver. And I feel like you and I get so much wear out of any vetiver perfume, so I think this would be one that would be heavily used.

Jeff:

It's really... This is a cool person's perfume too. Like, I feel like this is a young, chic city person's perfume. I don't don't wanna sound like I'm living on the farm or anything, but it's, it feels New York. It feels Chicago.

Jeff:

It feels Toronto or something, you know, it feels those kind of, wow, this is really good. Is it... I hope it's still available.

Jane:

It is. I checked.

Jeff:

It is? Okay. Good. Because I feel like... Because we bought all of those samples five, six years ago, some of them weren't available.

Jane:

Yes. Yeah. I made sure that I was getting one that we could still buy if we really

Jeff:

like it. We don't have anything like

Jane:

we bought daddy and poems one through 12, done. Hey, it's our anniversary.

Jeff:

And we already have tuberose. What's that one that we have? The universal flowering that we already have.

Jane:

Oh, no. It's not tuberose. It's Heliotrope milk bath.

Jeff:

Heliotrope. Yeah. Heliotrope milk bath. We already have that. Wow.

Jeff:

Okay. I'm really happy with this. This is a really good perfume. Well done, Courtney.

Jane:

I know. That was

Jeff:

So this is both of our favorites.

Jane:

Yeah. Clear winner of the game tonight. That is Poems one through 12 by Universal Flowering.

Jeff:

Okay. Well, Courtney, we have made it through another episode. We need to get some samples.

Jane:

Yeah. We're kind of... We're running through everything we have.

Jeff:

Can't rely on our

Jane:

this amazing you engineered this amazing thing that goes through our podcast, and I... When I am choosing samples, I can now look up ones that we've used in the game because we got called out on our last episode. Yes. It was something I

Jeff:

used before.

Jane:

I didn't know. Now I know.

Jeff:

Well, until next time, and we need to get some... We've had this idea, or I've had this idea, and I'm just gonna throw it out

Jane:

We're just spitballing.

Jeff:

And if you've made it this far into the episode, you know, thank you. And two, you get a little sneak preview of some ideas that we've been throwing around. But I have this idea that I've shared with you and you thought was a good idea where we just pick a listener or a listener volunteers and we send them three perfumes as kind of like an game adjacent thing. And if they're willing to come on to the podcast and share their thoughts of those three perfumes that we send them, would it be a fun little take on the game?

Jane:

That would be so fun.

Jeff:

So toying with the idea how we would make that happen because, of course, we'd have to do, like, you know, we'd have to do the whole guest setup and all that kind of stuff and make sure that they're, you know,

Jane:

who knows? No. Maybe no one

Jeff:

would even wanna do that. Oh my. Think

Jane:

So

Jeff:

that

Jane:

would listener be participation of this podcast is everything, and since we will be ordering samples, please send us anything that you think we'd like, especially gourmands since that's the kind of people we are now, apparently.

Jeff:

Oh, and just to close out this episode with a callback to the first topic, When we went down to spray Jane's third perfume, I went for a grab bag jelly, the Jelly Bellies and ended up with banana and lime, and that was like the worst combo you could

Jane:

have, Terrible. I mean, it sounds like a delicious alcoholic beverage to me. Hey, can you tell me that thing about the banana molecule you were telling me?

Jeff:

I can't remember where I read this, and I think it may have been something to do with perfume content, but the imitation banana flavor that we all are familiar with, if you get something that's like a candy or banana flavor, it is based off of a variety of banana that went extinct in like the thirties or forties, nineteen thirties or forties after like blight or something happened to all the crops. They were in Europe and that was the variety of banana that they used to make the synthetic banana smell and taste and we've just always kept it.

Jane:

But I wanna know about these European videos. Yeah. Maybe that's what I didn't mean.

Jeff:

Look that up. I'm pretty sure I'm right based on the fact that I heard that on a podcast or something at one point, so... And I believe it. So... Alright, everyone.

Jeff:

We will talk to you next time. Bye.

Jane:

See you next time.
