The Good Pod

The Good Wife Season 6 Episode 8, "Red Zone" — Cary Agos finally hears the CI tape that's been hanging over his head, and what he hears is a version of himself he can't explain away. Diane and Alicia run him through a mock trial with Viola Walsh playing prosecutor, and it goes about as well as you'd expect when a man is this angry at being wrongly accused. Meanwhile, Kalinda is caught between Lana's pillow talk and Lamond Bishop's demands, Cary makes a choice that lands him squarely on the multiple-stupid-things list, and Owen turns up with a campus case that pulls Alicia into a judiciary hearing with no rules she recognizes. Plus: a focus group that has thoughts about Alicia Florrick, and a photo op that goes very wrong.

not support with us, but support us

and, uh, show us that you like us.

That's, uh, that, that's really,
really helpful for you all to do that.

Um, now that that's out of the
way, Marissa, let's get into

all these, these storylines and
these things that we got going.

Marissa: We got so much happening.

Let's start with Kerry's case.

Uh, he is listening to the CI tape
that was, is part of this tape.

'Cause now if we were, if, just to
set the stage, uh, it's not looking

good for Kerry in this situation.

Uh, we have 50-something days till
trial, and Trey Wagner was just

murdered, so, ooh, and his cousin.

So we do not have a reliable way,
like get out of jail free card

here for, uh, Kerry, and also the
evidence against him, not so great.

So he's reviewing the CI tape, and
he's like, "Yeah, it sounds bad 'cause

you don't hear the beginning and you
don't hear the end. You just hear

the part they wanted you to hear."

And he's in the room
with Diane and Alicia.

They're kind of just talking about
how there's, like, three people on

the f- uh, on the wire, and then you
hear a voice on the speakerphone.

It is Kalinda.

Jason: Bro, bro, bro, bro.

Like, it's so crazy how this is like,
nope, we can't have Kalinda in the same

room as Leisha, so she needs to be on the

speaker

Marissa: and I think they did, that's
why they did that, like, 30 Feet

thing too with Carrie, 'cause now they
can say it out loud because, like,

Jason: Yep

Marissa: later in, in this conversation
she's like, "Can you tell me when you're

gonna leave work so I can come into work?"

Jason: Can you also tell me when
Alicia's gonna be leaving work?

'Cause I also can't be in 30 feet of
Alicia Florrick, AKA Julianna Margulies.

Marissa: Oh, man.

Jason: That's, it's just so wild how,
like, with, with, with new eyes that with

the things that we know about, it's like,
oh, obviously this is what was happening.

Marissa: Yes.

Jason: Like you said, with the whole like,
uh, 30 feet rule, they really kinda use

that to kinda cover their tracks here.

Marissa: They have like at least
an audience, something the audience

can like grab onto and justify or
rationalize why this is happening.

Jason: can we also talk about the tape?

And Kerry being like, "Oh my God,
guys. How, how, how is Jose talking

here?" I'm like, wow, that's the
most like animated and like bro-y

I think I may have ever heard

Marissa: You could assume he was high

Jason: Possibly, I don't know.

He's like trying to be down it feels like.

It's just like, okay, you're trying
a little too hard there, Kerry

Marissa: And this is before
the age of AI voices, so,

Jason: Yeah,

Marissa: so yeah, it was a bit out, it
was a bit out, out of character for him.

Uh, but yeah, so Kalinda's on the
phone and he's like, "Where are you?

Why are you whispering?" And she is
in a bedroom, in a bed with Lana.

And she's like, "I'm at home."

Jason: He's like, "Why are
you whispering?" I feel like

Kalinda speaks in a whisper.

Marissa: Yeah, she does.

Yeah, she's very like…

Jason: talks like this.

And it also is like, "I'm at home."
Like, the why are you whispering?

Are, is there someone
there with you, Kalinda?

Like, what?

No.

What?

What?

Why would you say that?

Marissa: Oh, man.

She reminds him that there
were four people on the wire

'cause he was on the wire.

And so Cary takes this to Alicia, and
Diane is like, "Yo, I need to testify.

Like, I'm in on this.

I need to testify." And Diane tells
Alicia, "If this were any other

client, we would be telling this
man to take a plea at this point."

And Alicia's like, "Yeah, but it's
not any other client. It's Cary."

So they decide to mock trial Cary's
testimony to see how it would play out.

Meanwhile, Kalinda is with Lana in bed.

Uh, and Lana says something super creepy.

Uh, she says, "I like that when
you don't go into work. It's

like I'm keeping you hostage."

Jason: It's like, "Mm, yeah,
that's not creepy at all, Lana."

Marissa: Uh-huh.

Uh-huh.

Uh-huh.

Uh-huh.

So while they are post-coitus
canoodling, uh, Kalinda gets a

phone call from Lamond Bishop.

Lamond says, "I know you're not alone.
Make … So make yourself alone."

So she takes the phone call into the
bathroom, and he wants to know what the

FBI is working on 'cause he knows that
Kalinda is with Lana at this moment.

Kalinda later finds herself in
a park- parking garages have a

big, a big play in this episode.

Uh, but she is in a parking
garage and basically told to

get into a car with Bishop.

And he's like, "You're dating the
FBI lady, and I need you to know that

the FBI and the state's attorney's
office are in cahoots to get to me.

So I need you to find out what
your girlfriend is working on." And

she's like, "Okay, I guess, I guess
so." Uh, meanwhile, in mock trial

land, Diane is questioning Cary.

And Cary, Cary, Cary's a little perturbed
that he has to do all of this, but he

is, he's playing along at this point.

Jason: It's like, why can't you all
understand this was an edited tape?

They don't get it.

Like, it's not fair.

It's not fair, guys

Marissa: And they were, she said, "Well,
so the CI edited, edited it?" And he

says, "No, he like turned it on, and
then he turned it off, and that's like

how he edited it." I was like, okay.

All right, so Diane wraps up her line of
questioning, and then we get to see who

was brought in to play the prosecution

Jason: Viola Walsh, our
good friend Viola Walsh.

I did not… Honestly, when we
started this whole thing, I did not

remember that Rita Wilson was such a,
like, such a character on this show

Marissa: Oh, yeah.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

She's, she's been around.

She's,

Jason: she's here.

I-- It's always a

Marissa: getting that paycheck

Jason: always a fun time when
Viola Walsh comes in and starts,

like, sparring with Diane.

And so I was like, I, I think she
was a good choice for who would

be the, like, cross Mach person.

Other, other than like a Patty Nyholm or

Marissa: Yeah.

Well, we haven't seen her in forever

Jason: her in forever.

What was the other, who
was the other woman?

Uh,

Marissa: Um, Meryl Streep's

Jason: yeah, that

Marissa: Nancy

Jason: Nancy Crozier.

Crozier.

But I like Viola Walsh because Diane
and, and Viola have, you know, a history

Marissa: Yeah.

Yeah, and I think those other one-
like Petty Nyholm is like a foil to

Jason: It sounded like you said

Marissa: like, uh

Jason: It, it sounded like you said
Petty Nyholm, and I was like, "That's

actually, that actually works really
well. Let's, let's keep her Petty Nyholm."

Marissa: Patty Patty Nyholm is like
a foil for Will, and then Nancy

Crozier was like a foil for Alicia.

Like, and this is Diane's match.

And Viola is like, she's t- she's like,
"So tell me, you worked for Bishop

before you became SA, or s- before you
went to state's attorney's office?"

She's like, "Uh-huh." "And then you
worked for the Bishop after you went

to the state's attorney's office?"

Like, "Uh-huh." "But you didn't
work for Bishop at the state's

attorney's office, right?"

Jason: it's like, yeah, no.

When you put it that way, that-
I'm, I'm looking at you Sus Carrie

Marissa: What is happening here?

And then he's like, "Well, then why?"
She goes, "Why did you lie to your

coworker Geneva Pine about working
for Bishop?" And he's like, "I didn't

lie." She's like, "You told her.

I have here a signed affidavit saying
that Ge- Geneva's told-- said that you

told her that you never defended Bishop."

Jason: And Geneva don't lie.

L- let's put, let's make that clear.

Geneva Pine don't lie, okay?

Marissa: And he's like, "Well, I,
like, wanted to stop her challenges for

the deputyship because I was going up
for deputy and she was challenging me

and…" And then Viola's like, "Okay,
so it was a lie, but it wasn't a lie.

What is your definition of a lie?"

Jason: So it's like, well,
I didn't lie 'cause I wanted

to hide or conceal something.

I just lied 'cause I wanted to do
something she didn't want me to do.

It's like, "Uh, uh, okay, so
you lied." So that's, yeah

Marissa: And then she's like, "Okay,
so how much did you make before

you went to the state's attorney's
office?" And he's like, "$38,000."

She's like, "Okay, how do you

Jason: the before at
Lockhart Garden was '85.

Marissa: Oh, it was 85, and then as
the estate's, at the state's attorney's

Jason: made 38, and now he makes 350

Marissa: th- yeah, yeah.

And she's like, "So how could you
maintain this $4,000 a month apartment,

uh, this entire time?" And he's
like, "Savings." I don't know why

he doesn't just say like, "I'm rich.

I'm loaded." Like, I don't know why
that's not something he would bring

Jason: my daddy's rich, I got a
trust fund, or whatever the case is

Marissa: okay, whatever, savings.

And she's like, "I wish I could save
that well." So after she sets up that

this man worked for Bishop before and
after the state's attorney's office,

that sh- he may have lied, he doesn't
know what the definition of a lie is,

and that he was able to maintain this
apartment, then she goes in and says,

"Okay, so let's talk about this cocaine."

Jason: Like there's, there's so many,
so many things against you here, Kerry.

So many, so many, so much
stuff that looks so bad.

It's like, wow, this is, this
is a stat- circumstantial case

Marissa: It's bad.

It's bad.

Diane's like, "I think we should talk,
Kerry. I think, I think we should talk."

So then we have a number of scenes where,
again, Kerry is in this menacing dark

office, like, f- uh, we are seeing him
from above, uh, from the start, where

he is watching his tape of mock trial.

And, like, it does not look
great, and he decides to call

Kalinda because why, why not?

And she denies the call to
eavesdrop on Lana because Lana got

a call and she had to go to the
bathroom to have this phone call.

And so she eavesdrops, uh, or Kalinda
eavesdrops and hears that Lana wants

to use the essay to get to Bishop,
so confirming what Bishop was saying.

Then we get a scene where Kerry

Like, Kerry's, like,
escalating in creepiness.

Like, I love Kerry, but
it's getting real creepy.

Because, again, in a parking garage,
Kerry is in his car and sees Kalinda kiss

Lana goodbye, and then he drives off.

And I'm just like, "What?
You're stalking her now?"

Jason: he seems to be scoping out,
like, Kalinda's parking garage and he

like sees Kalinda and Lana, you know.

He- she's, Lana dropping Kalinda off.

They have a kiss goodbye.

He's like, "Oh, interesting." Now
let's not forget that only like

two episodes ago Cary was trying
to canoodle with some other woman.

So let's, let's all remember that as
we keep going through this episode

Marissa: With the doctor from the pit.

Um, so then we go back to mock trial
for I'm guessing day two, and Viola

brings up the fact that this tape
started with jokes about women.

And, like, Kerry at this point I think
is, like, escalating because, like, he's

not getting what he wants from Kalinda.

He's having to do this, like, situation,
and he is very, like, hostile in this

confrontation because he's like, "Well,
what does my joking about women, what does

my joking about Beyoncé have to do with

Jason: Okay, not just women,

Marissa: Yeah.

Jason: the woman, uh, Beyonce.

And

Marissa: Beyoncé

Jason: Um, you know, sh-
share with the class what

Marissa: What you

Jason: what was the joke
about Beyonce, Carrie?

Hmm?

Hmm, Carrie?

What,

Marissa: It was 2014.

What was going on in Beyoncé

Jason: What's the joke, Carrie?

What's the joke?

I wanna laugh.

I wanna laugh, Carrie.

What you gotta say about Beyonce?

Listen, Carrie, you've already killed
three Black people with this nonsense, and

Marissa: You should

Jason: and now you're out
here talking about Beyonce.

What you have to say?

Go ahead.

I wanna hear a joke.

I wanna laugh.

What you gotta say, Carrie?

Marissa: You should be a middle
school teacher because "I

wanna laugh" is a great way

Jason: I wanna hear a joke.

What you got… I love standup.

What you got to say?

Come on, give me the joke.

Give me the joke, Harry, 'cause I'm sure,
I'm sure that it was a great joke that was

Marissa: Yeah, I'm sure
it was very supportive of

Jason: Yeah.

That wasn't racist or
misogynist at all, I'm sure.

Let me hear the joke, Harry.

I wanna hear it.

You got nothing to say?

Okay

Marissa: Well, then he turns into this,
like, petty crybaby man 'cause he is

like, "And," turns to Diane, "And you
should be objecting more." And I'm

like… And Diane is like, "If I object
more, it's gonna look bad, you dork.

Like, what are you doing?" And he
storms out of the mock trial thing,

and Viola goes up to Diane and is
like, "Hey, like, I know we've had our

differences in the past, but this guy,

Jason: He

Marissa: no bueno."

Yeah, like no bue-bue, as they say, say.

Jason: This is a, this is a
big, uh, entitlement episode

for, for our character.

It's like, "This isn't fair.

This should be happening to me.

Me?

I'm the good one.

Why are you doing this to me?"

Marissa: And he, he basically gets a
talking to from Diane like a mom would

talk to her son, because it's like,
"I don't know who you need to talk to.

I don't know what you need to get.

I don't know, but you are gonna get
your head together, and you are going

to do this." And he's like, "Well, you
need to protect me more on the stand."

And she says, "Watch the tape."

Jason: It's almost like, listen,
I don't know, y- get with-- find

a way to get with Kalinda and
get your, get your pipes cleared.

Do, do something because this, y- y-
it's built, all building up in you, and

you got, you got a lot going on in here.

Just

Marissa: Oh,

Jason: need to do something, okay?

'Cause you got a lot of
pent up whatever going

Marissa: It's just not good.

Like I, I, and again, it's like I don't
like this turn in character from Carrie.

Like, I just

Jason: you know, I, I wouldn't
say… I, I think, I think I like it.

I think it's fine with me because it
feels like, because at the end of the

day, he is being wrongly prosecuted.

Marissa: I agree

Jason: Yeah, he didn't really do anything.

I mean, listen, he was stupid.

That's, that's for damn sure.

He did a lot of stupid stuff.

Like this whole fraternizing with
drug dealers is bad, is stupid,

but he didn't actually do anything
illegal so that we know of.

He really skirted a lot of lines.

But I, I understand the frustration, and
he's also dealing with, I don't know,

not being able to see Kalinda, which
in this, in this episode particular

really kind of, uh, ratcheted up to
11 about how much he really needs and

to see and talk to and bang Kalinda

Marissa: Yeah, let's talk about that.

So, Kalinda gets home from work one day
and she notices that her door is unlocked,

so of course her Spidey sense is up.

She reaches behind for a gun, and then
you hear, "Put the gun…" Or basically,

"Kalinda, it's me." And it's Carrie

Jason: yeah, I was, i- in, in the, in,
in like the, the list of problems you

have, you was about to have a bullet
hole in your ass for another one, my guy.

You can't be sneaking up on Kalinda.

Like, come on,

man

Marissa: I'm like, "What are you
doing?" Like, "What are you doing?" And

then he goes, "Why do you lie to me?"

Jason: How did you get in here?

Is first of all, how did you get in?

I, I know damn well I ain't give
you a key 'cause that's not me.

I don't do that.

I don't share my keys with people.

How'd you get in here?

Like, I'm Kalinda.

This should be, like,
locked the hell down.

How'd you get in my house?

Marissa: And then he says, "You're with
the Fed." She's like, "Yeah." I was like,

"Well, the least you could do is be there
for me for the next 14 days or whatever,

and you could show me how much you care
about me by not going out with her." I'm

like, you are a baby child at this moment.

Like, I understand.

Okay, like I understand you're
stressed or all this stuff, but

what you are asking is not cool.

And he says, "You mean something
to me." And he's-- she says, "You

also mean something to me." He's
like, "Well, I don't wanna be with

anyone else." And she's like, "I do."

Jason: Oh

Marissa: And he-- then he says,
"Well, that clears that up.

Thank you and go to hell."
And I was like, "What?"

Jason: All right, baby
man, get out of here.

Like

Marissa: And she's like, "Let me check
to see if there's anyone outside."

Jason: It's like Carrie, like
she's like, "We're not married.

We're not even going steady." He's
like, "What if I do wanna go steady?"

She's like, "Uh, yeah, no." Like
I, that, I-- "Have you met me?

I'm Kalinda.

Like I, that's, this is not what I
do." Like I, I, I, like poor, poor

Carrie has finally joined the ranks
of all the other lovesick puppies

Marissa: I, I don't think he would
if he wasn't under the stress.

Like, I think he is just like, "I need
to, like, I need to cling onto something

steady and secure, and that is Kalinda.
So I'm gonna convince myself that

Kalinda is someone that would wanna
do this." Because he knows she's not

Jason: I think he, I think he thinks
to all these other lovesick puppies

that are like Lana, that were
like Dana, that are like Sophia.

Is her name Sophia?

Yeah, Sophia.

All the other lovesick people
that have come after Kalinda

and thinks, "I can change her.

I can be the o- I can be her

Marissa: Yeah, sure.

Jason: think Carrie fell under that
spell because he is in this predicament

where Kalinda is doing a lot for him.

She is being there for
him in, uh, other ways.

So he really-- And also, yes, he's
trying to cling to something stable.

L- l- I mean, and how could, like,
again, we are, are currently under

an injunction right now where I
can't even be 30 feet within you.

So,

like

Marissa: like, she's like, when
he-- She knows it's, it's like, "You

can't be doing this." Like, "What,
what are you…" He's like, "I don't

Jason: Carrie, you've added to
the multiple stupid things list

by coming here in the first place
and being within 30 feet of me

Marissa: And you can't tell
me that Joy, a lady like Joy,

doesn't have watchers or trackers

Jason: I'm sure Castro has a tracker.

Castro probably has a tracker
on Carrie, watches every move.

That's how, uh, they knew about the, uh,
stupid mixer he went to and got drunk at.

And so it's like, but no, this is stupid.

You're stupid for thinking
that I could be the one.

I could be the one to
make Linda settle down.

Like, no.

You know how many people
have thought that?

And you're not, you're not gonna be the
one to convince her to, like, not do that.

Marissa: Oh.

Yeah.

And he leaves and she's like, "Okay,
whatever." So he goes back to the office

and he is watching mock trial tape again,
and Alicia knocks on the door and she…

Jason: She,

Marissa: It's weird because

Jason: her weekly check-in of like,
"Hey bud, you okay? How you doing? You

hanging in there?" Yeah, you thought, you
thought, you thought your day was bad.

My day is pretty bad.

Like, no, Alicia, you're
running for state's attorney.

Boo-hoo.

Carrie tried not to go to jail.

So I, I don't need you, uh, comparing
and contrasting your days, okay?

Marissa: Yeah.

Yeah.

She, but she like, she,
she does care about Kerry.

So she goes in there with like this like
big sister speech of like, "Look, what

is happening to you is an injustice.

This is wrong.

This should not be happening.

However, you are lost in
the anger of the situation.

Give people, the jury, a chance
to find that anger on their own.

If it comes, if it comes from you,
it reads like entitlement," which

is something Alicia explores in this
episode, which we'll talk about.

And this apparently is all Kerry needed to
know how to behave on the stand, because

he says, "Thank you." And then Viola
tries to ask him some more questions.

Like, "So you were just like shooting
the shit with the guys, right?"

He's like, "No." "And like you
didn't do anything criminal or like

anything, your ignorance of said
things doesn't make you a criminal?"

"No." "Do you care to elaborate?"
"No." So he's kind of either … Yeah

Jason: when, you know, they, the pr-
prosecution tries to, like, get him to say

more and, like, incriminate himself more.

He's just like, "No." He stopped
trying to defend himself so much

Marissa: Yes.

Kalinda goes to Bishop and says that
Lana is working on white collar crime,

and she's like-- he's like, "Cool, I'll
believe you if you put this tracker in

her wallet." And, uh, she's like, "Why?"
And he goes, "Because I'm asking, and

that's what you're gonna do, because
otherwise you'll die, pretty much."

Jason: They don't really
explain what this card is.

He's just like, "You're gonna
put this white card in her wallet

Marissa: Well, which gets me to the
next point, because I don't really

understand what happened here.

And maybe Jason, you can, you
can help enlighten me here.

Because Kalinda, uh, goes … First
of all, if she's at Lana's house,

she's got a robe there now, or
she's using Lana ro- Lana's robe.

But anyway, she put, gets up from bed
to put the tracker in Lana's wallet, and

she opens the wallet, looks at Lana's
ID, and then says, "Nope, damn it."

And she cr- she breaks the tracker.

And so I don't know what this is.

Is it, like, do you just remember
that she was part of the FBI?

what-

Jason: Maybe it was just like a
realization of like, I'm about

to put a tracker on an FBI agent.

Like, this could go real shitty for me.

Like, it's like, who is like-- like, the
evidence is gonna be real hard against

me if she finds a tracker in her wallet.

Like, who is the only other person
that could be having acce- access

to your wallet at any given time?

That's me.

So like, I'm gonna… Yes.

Could I be killed by
Bishop if I don't do this?

Yeah.

But also if I do do this and I get
found out, I'm definitely going to

jail for like, you know, espionage
or whatever the hell the charge

would be against an FBI agent.

So like, and yeah, I don't… I, yeah,
the, the, that moment was real, like,

weird 'cause it's also like, did you
also like, "I can't do this to Lana.

It's Lana." Like, I don't know what the…
I just think it was like, "Oh yeah, this

is an FBI agent I'm about to like spy on.

Marissa: That could be

Jason: a good idea.

This is a terrible idea right now.

I got my fingerprints all over this card.

Like when she finds this card, it's gonna
be real easy to try to tie me to this.

Uh, I'm not doing this." Uh, and
yeah, snaps the card in half or

whatever. I'm just like, "Okay.

I mean, you're probably signing your
death warrant by doing that, but go

Marissa: We'll find out.

Jason: Go off, queen.

Go off, queen." Um,

Marissa: So that's
where we leave that one.

The Carey's, I guess, we don't
know if he's going to testify, but

things are still not great for him.

But it was great to see Viola.

Uh, meanwhile, in Alicia land, um, Owen
just shows up at the office one day.

He's just like, like a Pokemon.

He just like, badoop, shows up.

And he asks, yeah.

He's like, "How's the campaign?"
She's like, "I'm so sorry about Phil.

Like, I'm not gonna talk to you about
your boyfriend, like, ever again.

It's okay." He's like,
"Yeah, he's a great guy.

But also, I have this case for you."
Um, and she's like, "I'm taking

a step back from my cases." He's
like, "No, it's just like an hour.

This student got raped, and she's in
front of the, the ju- student or the

university judiciary board, judiciary
committee, and just needs an advocate.

It's, like, only an hour.

You can … You would
totally help her out."

Jason: I don't think we did enough
to talk about the, uh, talk about

Phil, who last we heard about Phil, he

Marissa: Oh, yes.

Was

Jason: a gay man, a gay married
man doing bareback porn, gay porn.

Marissa: Ja.

Mm-hmm.

Mm-hmm.

Mm-hmm.

Mm-hmm

Jason: And so like we just kinda whisk
past that of like, 'cause I mean, last

time we saw them, Alicia was trying to
like talk to Owen about it, like because,

you know, of the Apple research of it all,
and Owen like stormed out of her house.

So it's like, "Hey, my bad."
He's like, "Oh, it's fine.

Don't worry about it." He's a good guy.

D- moving on

Marissa: He's a good guy.

He's a good guy.

Here, here's the thing for you.

Um, she… So, so she didn't go to
the… The student didn't go to the

police, and so they have this, like,
university judiciary committee.

Um, Alicia calls Eli to tell
Eli that she's doing this.

Eli is at a focus group, which we
will also talk about, but Eli's

like, "What are you doing now?"

She's like, "Oh, it's a rape case."
He's like, "Oh, like rape has never

been controversial," and hangs up.

I love sassy Eli.

I love sassy Eli.

So the student was at a frat party.

She got her own drink.

She didn't put it down.

She woke up naked.

She couldn't find her clothes.

She is reliving all of this in front of
the judiciary board or committee, and,

um, she's doing this all by herself.

She's crying on the stand.

She says she, when she woke up, she
found out that he had ejaculated

on her, and the guy… Like, if you
want, if you wanna look, like, what's

wrong with America, I don't know.

I don't know.

Or the manosphere.

You wanna look at the manosphere,
it's this dude, because this guy's

like, "That's not what happened.

This could destroy my life, Jodie.

Like, I don't know what
you're talking about.

Like, oh," and Alicia's like, "Nah,
uh, uh, uh, you can't do that.

The accused cannot do that." And the
committee is like, "Actually, he can

Jason: Cue the, uh, lawyer not
knowing how the rules work in a

specialized, um, specialized court

Marissa: One of those

Jason: Uh, we get it, you
know, five times every season.

This is our, this is our most recent one.

I'm like, "What?

What do you mean I can't object?

Huh?

I'm supposed to be silent.

What are you talking… What do you
mean he can just say whatever he wants?"

Marissa: Well, and it's according
to the rule book, he can interject.

Um, and did we wanna talk
about who's on the panel?

Jason: Um, yeah, we've got
some peeps on the panel.

Um, the woman panelist, they
don't really give good names.

I think they name her Booth later.

Um, Katie Rose Clarke.

Sh- it, uh, not much here, but I
think she is a big Broadway person.

Um, she did star in the
Merrily We Roll Along film,

Marissa: Oh, yeah.

Jason: Um, she was also on the debutante
episode of Elsbeth, so some more

Marissa: dead you'd

Jason: debutante.

Um, so yeah, some, some ties
here with the Kings and Broadway

that we know the Kings love.

Uh, the male panelist is, uh, Peter
McRobbie, who was on, uh, I have not

watched this show yet, but I hear
it's a great show called Furious.

Marissa: It's really

Jason: Yeah, he's on that show.

He was on Daredevil as, uh, Matt
Murdock's, like, uh, head priest guy who

he goes to for, like, advice and stuff.

Didn't even realize it was him
till I looked him up on the IMDb.

I was like, "Oh, yeah." But he was also
on Gilded Age, uh, you know, which will

be coming back, uh, in November, so
kind of something to look forward to.

He was Rizley Sage, who is like-- First
of all, it's just a fantastic name.

Uh, and was, like, a, like,
the competitor for, uh, Mr.

Russell in the railroad business.

I remember that.

Marissa: Yes.

Yes.

So we got some semi-known peeps.

Yeah.

Yeah.

The conversation then turns to how
much Jody, the student, was drinking,

whether she was drinking beer or tequila.

Alicia's like, "I gotta go to
the bathroom." So they pause.

Um, but really what was happening is
Alicia wanted to talk to Jody in the

hall, and she has apparently obtained the
rule book and has learned that he can…

That Toby, I think is the guy's name,
can interrupt with questions only.

So she's, she's trying to coach Jody
into bringing that up and then says,

"Hey, what's your phone number?" So it
turns out that sh- her… She's gonna

support Jody via text, and Jody gets
back, uh, to tell how she was drinking

a beer and not drinking tequila.

Toby's like, "That's not true. I saw you
drinking tequila over by the what's of

wherever." And Jody says, "Uh, hey, you
cannot do that. You have to interrupt with

a question, not a statement, according
to," and then she looks down at her phone.

It was like paragraph or page
38, paragraph C, whatever.

We get the cop testifying saying
that Jody came to her three

days after the rape happened.

She was in control, okay?

She was in control.

She wasn't flustered by
anything that happened.

She didn't want a rape exam.

And Alicia's, uh, advice to Jody
here is to ask if he had any rape

kits to administer at the time.

And he's like, "Well, I didn't
have… She didn't want one." And

it's like, "That's not the point.

Did you have any?" He's like, "No, no,
but I coulda, like, gotten one if we

needed one." Uh, and then Toby from the
back is like, "Yeah, but was she crying,

officer, when she was talking to you?"
And he, "No, wasn't crying." So Jody's

like, "I would like you to hear testimony
from my counselor." Owen what's his face?

Jason: Og hun blablabla

Marissa: Cr- Crawford?

Crenshaw?

Something

Jason: Kavanaugh

Marissa: that.

Anyway, that's it.

Yeah.

So Jody was clear to Owen
that, like, this happened.

She was very aware of what happened
to her body, everything, and she

just wanted this guy not to be in…
to see this guy at school anymore.

She's just looking for
this guy to be expelled.

Um, and then Alicia texts Owen, "The
campus cop was composing his erection."

And then Owen's like, "Yeah,
no, that doesn't make any sense.

It's, like, some sort of
autocorrect or something

Jason: That was funny

Marissa: Which was funny.

Toby is still, like, talking
really annoyingly, saying

that it's all his fault.

Um, there's not enough evidence here
according to the committee for an

expulsion, uh, because of whatever.

So Alicia's like, "Uh, excuse me, but
this is a lack of due process, so that

means you're opening up yourself to a
lawsuit." And the guy on the committee

goes to Jodi, "Is that what you're doing?

Are you suing us, Jodi?"
And she says, "Yes."

Jason: It's Jody.

Jody, you're not gonna
sue us, are you, Jody?

Jody, come on, Jody.

And Jody's like, "Am I gonna sue
them?" And Alicia's like, "Yeah."

She's like, "Yeah, I'm gonna sue you."

Marissa: So Alicia's in court, um,
wanting… All she wants is them to

change the makeup of the university panel.

She's not asking for, like, anything else.

The guy's like, "Hey," the judge who
we've seen before, who I forgot his

Jason: Josh Parks, man.

That's, that's our

Marissa: Yeah, Judge Park

Jason: That's ba- that's Basketball Parks.

He was part of, uh, Will's
basketball league back in the day

Marissa: Judge Parks is like,
"Can this be l- like delayed for

a week?" She's like, "Yeah, sure.

No prob- Like, that, that's fine." And
then we hear, like, a commotion at the

door, and it turns out that Lewis Canning,
of course, is defending the university in

this case, and also he has progressed in
his kidney situation so much as that he

is in, in a wheelchair and needing oxygen

Jason: Mm-hmm.

Who, who knows how much of this was
actually needed or, you know, or whatever.

I really think the oxygen
is something that was, like,

taken over the top of, like,

Marissa: I think so too.

Yeah

Jason: Judge, I'm so sorry." You know?

Marissa: But it's, it's classic

Jason: Yeah, I, they, they've really
kinda taken it over the top, like,

we've really kinda progressed in
Cannings, like, you know, performalism

of, like, of all things going on.

It's like, "Oh man, this electronic
wheelchair," you know, "Oh, I

can't get it through the door,

Marissa: yeah, and Parks was like, Parks
is like, "Are you okay?" Like, are, are

you… He's like, "Yeah, no, it's fine.

I just, I just like, I have to
get a kidney transplant because

of my medication, and that
has to be, like, in a week.

So we're looking for this to be
expedited." And Alicia's like, "Of

course." They don't want this time to
go by because if there's more time,

there's more time for publicity,
and this could negatively impact

the admissions of the university.

Canning again is like, "No, I am dying,
so we must go faster." And then he, like,

takes his oxygen as he's saying this.

And Alicia, of course, is skeptical.

She's like, "Are you dying?" He's like,
"Well, I need a kidney transplant."

And Alicia's like thinking to
herself, "Why do I think he's lying?

Am I lying?" This has to do with how
she's being perceived by the focus group.

So then we got the blonde lady,
Booth, on the stand, and she's talking

about this was a fair hearing, okay?

Like, usually most
hearings are only an hour.

This was five hours over two days.

And Canning is like, "Sounds like
due process to me." And, like, there

were, um, there were also, like, a
lot of regulations during this, right?

And she's like, "Yeah." "Did
Alicia interfere with any of

these regulations?" And Alicia's
like, "I am not on trial here.

Like, don't, don't bring me into this."
And then she turns her questioning,

Alicia's questioning to Booth is like,
"Hey, did you get any training on

how to do these things?" She's like,
"Well, there was a weekend seminar."

It's like, "Any training videos
on, like, sexual assaults?

Anything along those lines?" Like,
"No." And Canning's response is,

"Well, have you ever sat on a jury?

And were you able to do that without,
you know, a degree or any- anything else

like that?" And Alicia's like, "Yeah, but
you got instructions from a judge, right?

Like, in terms of what to do."

Jason: loved Alisha's answer to that.

It was just like, yeah, but you have,
like, so many guidelines in a court case.

You had expert witnesses to hear from.

Like, you know, you didn't have
to rely on your knowledge and,

like, on your expertise to,
like, you know, d- be on a jury.

But you are-- You here, in this situation,
are the arbiter of, like, punishment or…

And you don't know anything about
anything, so who are you to be able to

pass judgment on anything or anybody?

Marissa: Yeah.

Yeah.

Meanwhile, Kalinda calls, of course,

Jason: Yep

Marissa: and I don't know how she had
time to do this with all the other

stuff she's doing, but she's at the
university and she, she's like, "Great

news, Alicia. I found more rapists."

Jason: I found a rape wall

Marissa: She's like, "Oh, okay."
'Cause apparently, whenever a, a

student got raped, they put their,
um, rapist's name on the wall.

And Alicia's like, "Well, I don't
think we can, like, open this up

to, like, class action su-" She's
like, "No, they're covering up the

wall." Like, they're like, "Oh, okay.

Well then, yeah.

Yeah, we can't, yeah, we can't do this."
And so with word of the class action,

Canning shows Alicia that just, just
coincidentally, um, Toby's room was

searched, and they found a lot of pot in
Toby's room, and so he's been expelled.

Jason: That's what you
wanted, right, Jody?

Marissa: that's what you wanted, Jodie,

Jason: all good.

Marissa: And

Jason: really get justice for,
for your thing, but we kinda

sorta got you justice, right?

That's good enough, huh?

Huh?

Marissa: Like, for your specific
thing, and Alicia is, goes from

like zero to 60, or in, well, and
then back again in like two seconds.

She's like, "This is like,
this is just one of 60 reasons.

We are just getting started." And
Jodie's like, "Nope, that's it.

Like, that's all I need.

Uh, I'm gonna go.

I'm gonna take this,
and I'm going to leave."

And she, then the next thing out of
Alicia's mouth is, "So is the operation."

Like, she like drops like the whole thing

Jason: Well, she goes ham because
that's all she knows how to do of like,

"No, no, no, no, you don't understand.

We're gonna-- We're, we're not gonna
stop until your university is dead,

just like you'll be soon, Canning."
And Jodie's like, "Mm, I'm good.

I got, I got my pound of flesh.

I'm not gonna have to see
this asshole anymore."

And I thought it was interesting
she, like, took the letter.

She's like, "This, I'm gonna p- like,
post this on my wall. I got his ass

out of here." It was like, good, great.

Not really like, you know, the way
you really want it, but you got,

you got what you wanted in the end.

So that, that's good
for Jodie, I, I guess.

But Alicia's like, "No, we're not done
here." And she's like, "Yeah, we're done.

I'm good.

Thanks.

Bye."

Marissa: I'm good.

And then Alicia's just like, "Okay,
uh, so when's the operation?"

And he's like, "I don't know.

But there is one thing
you can do for me, Alicia.

If I do die, visit my wife.

She likes you." And Alicia's like, "I
will." I'm just like, "Okay." So I don't

know what the, like, purpose of this was.

Jason: it felt, it felt as if they
were like plotting out this episode

and like, "You know something? We got
an extra 10 minutes in the episode."

Marissa: Well, I w-- I, I know, like,
it comes up as part of the focus group,

Jason: Yeah, it ties in a little bit

Marissa: she does, but, like… And I know
it educates us as the audience in terms

of how u- universities can handle certain
things, but I don't really know what

Jason: I guess there wasn't,
there wasn't anything, like,

unique or showstopping about this.

Th- this feels like a lot of
cases we've done before, right?

Marissa: Yeah, and it was a way to
kind of get information about canning.

It was a way for her to get
back with Owen, I guess.

Like, there just… But
there wasn't anything

Jason: And you know what's weird?

Because this is the first time
we're seeing Canning since Canning

and David Lee were kicked out
of the Lockhart/Gardner offices.

We don't really talk about that at all.

I would love to see where Louis
and David Lee are now, like what,

what their, what their setup is
like wherever they found space.

Um, it just feels like, it felt like
they were like, "Oh, you know what?

We, we plotted this episode.

We got 10 minutes left in the episode.

What do we do here?

Like, oh, we'll make up a case.

Uh, w- we'll bring in Owen.

Everyone likes Owen, right?

Uh, and Michael J. Fox could be here.

Like, yeah, that works.

That's great."

It just, it didn't feel like this
was anything like, oh, I don't

know, special about this case

Marissa: Yeah.

Yeah.

I mean, every woman's story deserves to
be told, and I'm glad we got to knew about

… know about, like, all of that stuff.

But how this plays into the
overall other things that are

going on in our characters' lives,

Jason: Yeah, and it

Marissa: especially because, like,
since Will's death, this … the

storylines have been more about
the characters and not necessarily

about court cases by court case.

So it's just, like, a little confusing

Jason: Yeah, it, it felt like they were
trying to inject a little bit of, like,

old school "Good Wife" into the new school
"Good Wife," and I don't know if it really

worked that well 'cause it, like I said,
it just feels like this is a, a, a type of

case that we've seen several times before.

We've had, you know, school courtrooms
where we have special circumstances

and special rules and, uh, how
those things are adjudicated.

So it's like, like, okay,
it was, it was fine.

Like, I didn't, I didn't hate
it, but also didn't love it.

It was just

Marissa: Yeah.

It was there.

Jason: Yeah.

Marissa: It is part of, I guess, the
larger conversation when it comes to

the campaign, because like we've been
talking about this entire episode,

while this whole thing, while this
is going on, while the Kerry stuff

is going on, Eli and Elfman are
running a focus group on Alicia.

I have to say, I, I did not
expect Eli to be so into this.

Like, you know, he was like, "You need a
separate campaign manager," but now him

and El- Elfman are, like, tied together.

Jason: really in

it.

Marissa: Yeah, he's in it.

Uh, so we … I, I don't wanna
go play-by-play on this because

it's basically just a reaction to,
like, would you vote for Frank?

Like, things that are
happening in the thing.

But I think it is interesting to
talk about, like, the perception of

Alicia throughout this entire time.

We get mentions of, like, if she's the
good wife, how she stands with her husband

Jason: I, I do wanna call out, uh, where
one of the, like in the very beginning

where Alicia sees this part, where
someone says, "Well, she seems entitled

and selfish." And Alicia's like, "What?

Why would she say that?" And
Eli's like, "Don't, don't,

don't listen to what she says.

She's a stuck-up bitch."
I was like, "Whoa."

Marissa: In, yeah, just like
in one, in one focus group.

Uh, but it seems like, uh, first
of all, I identified with one of

the people in, in that focus group.

I was like, "Yeah, that's something
I would say." Because when asked

about, you know, if her being the good
wife w- was like helping her image

or whatever, one-- the old lady was
like, "Well, that's just what you do."

And then this other lady was like,
"Well, it matters if she's a doormat,

like if she just can't like," you know.

I was like, "Yeah, lady, yeah." Um, so
they're having all this information.

It is getting into Alicia's
head a little bit in terms of

like how she's being perceived.

We do get a couple of flashbacks while
she's at, at the university about

like how people are perceiving her.

Um, one thing that also happens
is that Alicia goes to visit

Finn in his office upstairs.

Um, and she, because of this comment
that you mentioned, Jason, he's like…

Or she goes, "Do I f- seem entitled
to you?" And he's like, "No." Like,

Jason: Meanwhile, meanwhile
everybody at home is just

nodding their head like, "Yes,

you do."

Marissa: She's like, "I don't
know if it's true or if, like, the

people who know me are too polite."

And then Finn says, "My ex-wife
used to say the same thing about

me." And I was like, "Ooh, ex-wife.

Jason: Well, we've heard, we've heard it

Marissa: I know, but she's bringing it up.

Bringing it

Jason: Yeah.

It's like, and aga- again,
it's like, okay, y'all are

in this empty office space.

No one's around.

Can we get some Finleisha
going on or, or what?

Like, come on.

Yet another Finleisha
opportunity just squandered.

Like, what are, what
are we doing here, guys?

Marissa: squandered.

Uh, he's like, "Well, you know, you know
what I like to do to make myself not

feel entitled is I like to volunteer
at a soup kitchen, so why don't you

volunteer at the soup kitchen with
me?" I was like, "Oh, okay." So after

a day at court, Alicia shows up.

She's, like, still in court clothes.

It looks so funny.

It was like, "You dressed down
nice." And I was like, "Oh.

Jason: Well, Finn-Leesha alert.

Finn-Leesha alert.

Um, yeah, I like when Finn
told her about the soup, cuz

she's like, "Wait, you do that?

That's something you do?" Like,
it almost felt as if like, "Oh,

Marissa: Like people do that?

Jason: not doing enough?" Am I like…
'Cause I thought I was like a nice person,

but am I not… Is Finn nicer than me?

What's happening?

Marissa: Mm-hmm.

Because Alicia shows up last at the
soup kitchen, she has to do the pots.

She has to do all the pots,
uh, wash all the pots.

While she's washing a pot, she
gets a call from Eli, which

I love this about politics.

I love this stuff.

It cracks me up all the time because
Eli's like, "We have found out

where Frank is gonna announce."

She's like, "Okay, cool." Like, "Yeah,
we found out from the Confetti Brothers"

because the Confetti C- Brothers own
a company and they, they know where

the confetti's gonna go, so therefore,
that's where Frank is gonna announce.

She's like, "Okay, cool." While she's
having this conversation, someone

comes by and takes a photo, and Alicia
waves while she's taking this photo.

Jason: She might as well
have done the Queen's wave

Marissa: Yeah, I was like, "Hello." Well,
the next morning, Grace, I don't know why

this wakes her up, but it wakes Grace up.

Grace, okay, Grace, first of all,
is sleeping with her laptop open

on the side of her bed, and she
wakes up to a Chum Hum alert.

It is of this picture, and, uh, Eli
is like, "Why are you in a picture

where you are cleaning a clean

Jason: Oh, damn.

Oh, damn, damn, damn.

And I would also like to say, like,
the whole Grace laptop thing, like

it's just so funny watching the, like,
slow journey to, you know, phones.

Because it's like, you know, if this was
20… I mean, hell, even what, 2019 or

2020, it would've been a phone on the,
on the bedside table with the alert.

But it's, it has to be a la- a full
ass laptop to get that alert from.

It's just so funny to watch the slow fade
into, uh, you know, cellular technology.

Marissa: Yeah, I mean, at
this-- it was 2014, they should

Jason: iPhones and stuff, but
I don't know if we had like,

we had all that like if it was

Marissa: Or was it, like, that's
a, that's a computer activity,

Jason: Yeah, it's, I think it's,

Marissa: a phone activity?

Jason: it's still like we're not s-
we're still not in the age of like

I get everything on my phone now.

Like we're s- we were still
weren't quite there yet.

Marissa: That's true.

That's true.

Uh, so she's like, "I was watching,"
or, "I was washing this pot."

Jason: I swear it was dirty at one point

Marissa: Eli's like, "Listen, you
cannot do photo ops on your own.

Like, let me help you. Like, let me
do this job." At the same time, the

focus group is looking at this photo
and thinking that she is so entitled.

Jason: Man, when she, when she
started doing that, I was like,

"Oh no, this is not gonna go well."
Like, I knew what was coming.

I was like, "Oh boy, this is gonna
go… It's actually gonna look bad

Marissa: And it causes Eli to
have, like, basically a come

to Jesus meeting with her.

She's like-- He goes, "Have you finished
with your good works, Mrs. Florrick?"

It's like, there's a reason
why I exist, basically.

There's a reason why I do what I do.

Just you have to let me do your job.

If you want to do good work, I will
tell you where to send a check.

Right now, you know, let me handle,
let me handle this situation.

Jason: This really should have
been an Elfman conversation.

Marissa: this is what I'm saying.

Jason: Like, what

Marissa: Like, where is he?

What is he doing?

Anyway, uh, but Eli does set up a
proper photo op at the soup kitchen,

which goes really well, so much
that it causes Castro to withdraw

from the race just that easily.

He just-- The man just folded

Jason: like, "What?" Like, "Huh?"
I was so perturbed by this.

I was like, we did so much groundwork
for all this Castro stuff, and then we

just off-screen get him just quitting.

I was like, "What?" I feel like,
you know, when they found David High

Pierce, they were like, "Oh, okay.

We got, we, we got some DHP up in here.

F Castro.

F what he talking about.

We got some DHP taking over." I was
like, you couldn't have a three-way race?

I would love to see, like, a debate
where DHP, Alicia, and Castro are there,

and DHP and Alicia take turns just
eviscerating Castro, and then that's

why he quits the ra- race or something.

We got no explanation of why he's
quitting the race, what's going on.

We spent so much time with Castro.

He's doing this whole Carrie thing
because he wants to beat Alicia

in the state's attorney's race.

So what is this?

Marissa: Okay.

Unless, unless, unless it has to do
with the fact that he's working with the

FBI and, like, he's promised something
bigger, something better, something…

I don't know what it- maybe he wants
to be a consent decree attorney.

Okay?

Like, maybe that's what needs to happen.

But yeah, I was just like, "You folded?

You folded just like that?"

Jason: Yeah, just like that.

Just like that.

When did, when did "Fringe" start?

That's, that's my question, 'cause he
was the, he was the man in the hat on

"Fringe." Was he needed over there?

Uh,

Marissa: You're saying fringe.

Okay, I thought you said friends at
first, and I was like, "Whoa, what

timey wimey thing are we doing?"

Jason: Uh, no.

Fringe was like 2008.

Oh.

Yeah, no, it's not that.

I, it's like, what, what… I, I was mad.

I was like, "Why, why did we do
all this with Castro just for

him to be like, 'I quit,' off

screen?"

Marissa: and it's just… And then also
the reaction from Eli and Alicia are just

like, "Okay, well now we gotta be frank."
And not like, "Oh my God, I can't believe

that happened." Anyway, at the end, the
focus group does say that they do like

Alicia, which is so important for her ego
and so important for all of this stuff.

So she's-- They do like her, and
that gets Alicia to turn to Eli

and say, "Tell me what to do."

Jason: Yeah.

I was, I was so annoyed that
Cash Show dropped out off

Marissa: Yeah

Jason: I was like, "Why we got no reason
why?" This isn't the first time this

type of thing has happened as well.

Like, I feel like, like Mike Rostiva
lost, like just out of nowhere.

Like, oh, now we gotta
worry about this person.

Rostiva's outta here.

Like, why?

What happened?

I don't know.

So yeah, that's annoying,
but these things happen.

Um, yeah.

That's the episode.

Uh, Marissa, do you wanna tell
the people where they can find

you, what you're up to, uh, where,
where they can see your good works?

Marissa: You can see all my good
works, uh, at itsmemarissag.com.
