And here’s today’s news from Rail Technology Magazine in association with TransCity Rail – on Tuesday the 9th July 2024.

Arriva Netherlands has launched a new international rail service, seamlessly connecting three countries.
Collaboration between Arriva, Dutch national operator NS and Belgian national operator NMBS has enabled the EU co-funded initiative, which will allow passengers to travel between Liège in Belgium, Maastricht in the Netherlands and Aachen in Germany without needing to change trains.
The all-electric route is operated by Arriva’s fleet of eight Stadler FLIRT 3 Cs, which have been adapted to accommodate the different voltages and rail systems used in the three countries.
Newcastle-based operator Lumo has been named “Green Innovation Business of the Year” at the North East Chamber of Commerce Awards.
Lumo provides a 100% electric rail service, connecting Newcastle with London and Edinburgh along the East Coast Main Line, offering a service which it claims is 25 times greener and cleaner than flying.
Lumo also became the first long-distance train company to eradicate plastic bottles onboard when it introduced a sustainable carton alternative for water earlier this year.
Lumo is currently in the process of expanding its network beyond the East Coast Main Line. The operator recently extended some of its Edinburgh-bound services to Glasgow and announced plans to commence services on a new route between London, Manchester and Rochdale.

A launch date for the transformational Sydney Metro City project has been announced. From 4th August, a 15-and-a-half -kilometre extension to the network’s M1 line, as well as the opening of six new stations and two new platforms, will usher in a new era for the Sydney metro.
The upgraded M1 line will see trains running every four minutes at peak times, with 445 services a day. With the new route extension, more than 264,000 individual journeys are expected to be taken on the line each day.
Further upgrades to Sydney’s light rail system are expected over the next few months, with the T3 Bankstown Line to close for up to a year as it undergoes its final metro conversion works.
