The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

After a long holiday weekend (the first of two in a row!), we welcome Prince Paolo back to the studio for our ongoing Under The Radar weekly indie feature, his first physically in studio for three weeks! The time off did not abate the penchant for weird, though.

Show Notes

As broadcast October 5, 2021 with a sensible amount of extra music for you circumspect podcast travelers.  We welcome Prince Paolo back to the studio for the first time in "almost a month" after a couple of weeks of holidays and then a quarantine bit last week, but nothing can stop the inanity and audio insanity that is our Under The Radar indie weekly.  We start remembering this date in 1975 when the original members of Bob Marley & The Wailers played together for the final time at a festival put together by Stevie Wonder.  After that it's all the fresh truffles from the past week as Prince Paolo hauls it in & we spin!

PART 1 SONGS
Bob Marley & The Wailers – Rastaman Chant
adaolisa – alittle
Sleepy Soul – Tandem
Micra – After Dark
Nature TV – Summer Nights
Furrows - Wasteland
PART 1 FACTS
Bob Marley & The Wailers – Rastaman Chant
- On this date in 1975, the original members of The Wailers in Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer played together on stage for the final time at the Wonder Dream Concert in Kingston, which was a benefit organized by Stevie Wonder.
- The group opened with this tune to start the show, but the recording quality of this concert is awful so we went with the studio version of it, released as the b-side on the Waiting In Vain 45.
- It’s arguable what caused the breakup of the group, but Peter Tosh was always bitter about it towards Marley, with some saying that he actually blamed the group’s handler Chris Blackwell.
adaolisa – alittle
- Very nice tune from a young lady with a lovely voice. This tune & the video just dropped on Sept 29 courtesy of Matches Music, and was produced by Lukas Klement.
- Big up to Jakob & David over there for hipping us on that one.
Sleepy Soul – Tandem
- This is another newer tune that just came out last Thursday.
- The band is a duo out of St. Louis consisting of Michael LeFevre & Nick Hummel.
- Very much the woozy, literal bedroom pop feel on that one.
Micra – After Dark
- A new band on the scene, this is another duo with the combined talents of Bulgarian-born Ivana Kafedjiyska along with Aussie guitarist & producer Robbie Cain.
- The pair nowadays are based in Sydney, and since formation in 2018 they have gotten high praise from Triple J with their ethereal arrangements & vulnerable vocals.
Nature TV – Summer Nights
- The band are back with this, their latest single, and they just keep rolling with praise coming in from BBC and fellow musicians by the bucketload. Now signed with booking giants ITB along with the heist or hit label, the sky is the limit.
Furrows – Wasteland
- This is the solo projet of Peter Wagner, who is a classically trained multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter who now resides on-and-off in between NYC & Baltimore.
- Wasteland is the 2nd single from his debut album Fisher King, which is due out October 15
PART 2 SONGS
Jamie Lane - Sanctuary
Uffie – cool
Television Blonde – Daisy
Peakes - Day and Age
Ishi - Pros & Cons
RIVER - Dance in the Darkness
PART 2 FACTS
Jamie Lane – Sanctuary
- Jamie Lane is an electronic music artist from Down Under and “Sanctuary” is his very latest.
- Musically, I think the track is really nice. Overall, the instrumentation is straightforward and almost typical, but there are some very nice touches and flashes of more intricate and interesting sounds thrown in there too. Jamie Lane flexing those production muscles no doubt.
- He says that this song is about those brief moments of peace in life, learning to appreciate them when they come and remembering them when life gets tough.
Uffie – cool
- Uffie is kind of a legend on the scene and it is very cool to see her back. She is back in a very big way as this new track is her debut single on her new label, Toro y Moi’s Company Records. That’s quite a big deal for sure.
- Musically, the track is awesome. I love how she says “cool” over and over alongside the bassline of the beat. It is indeed, very cool.
- This track marks the start of a new chapter in her career and I’m really looking forward to seeing how it all plays out. Exciting stuff, no doubt.
Television Blonde – Daisy
- Television Blonde is an artist from Cincinati, Ohio. Not much else I can tell you in terms of personal details but I can say that he has almost a quarter million monthly listeners on Spotify and his single from last year, “Freaks” has over 7 million streams. Quite impressive.
- Musically, I like the song a lot. The beat is really cool and I like his quietly intimate sounding vocals on this one.
- This track comes to us via Spirt Goth, which is definitely a label doing great things these days.
Peakes - Day and Age
- Peakes is a trio from Leeds. I like this new track a lot and I like Peakes in general. They’ve got a sound similar to one of my favorite bands, Metric, and I mean that as a compliment.
- After releasing an debut EP last year entitled “Pre Invented World”, they have now just announced that their debut full length is on the way soon. The album is entitled “Peripheral Figures”, it will drop November 19th and come via Practise Music.
Ishi - Pros & Cons
- Ishi is a songwriter and vocalist from Dallas. After 8 long years, he is back on the scene. He recently released a new album. It is his third album, it’s called “Sweet Gold”, and it comes to us via Icons Creating Evil Art.
- The new album has been in the works for over 2 years but he didn’t want to release it until it felt right for him.
- If you like this “Pros & Cons” single, definitely go and check out the rest of the album. I think it’s pretty high quality stuff for sure.
RIVER - Dance in the Darkness
- We got a smooth one to end off part 2. RIVER is a duo originally from California but now they are based in Hamburg.
- “Dance in the Darkness” is their second single to date, and as mentioned, it is very smooth indeed.
- The duo say that the song is inspired by one of my favorite things to do; that is walking around at night, blasting music on headphones.
PART 3 SONGS
Morning Silk – Don't Try Hard Enough
TARA - Light Again
I Know I Know – Fickle
Ilton - THE GAME
Ryan Egan - Weeknights
NoSo - Suburbia
PART 3 FACTS
Morning Silk – Don't Try Hard Enough
- Morning Silk is the moniker of Frank Corr. He is from Providence, Rhode Island and he started out making music in his bedroom there.
- He has since moved to New York, built a studio there, and that’s where he made this song.
- He says the song is about discovering what you really want to do with your life and feeling like you can now push harder towards your goals because of that realization.
TARA - Light Again
- TARA is an indie band based in Brooklyn. They have a sort of shoe-gazey dream-pop sound and that vibe is on full display in this new single.
- The band says that “Light Again” is about breaking up and then making up and how the process can take a huge toll on us. In the end though, all the pain and suffering might be all worth it if the relationship survives all the turbulence.
- I’m with that idea for sure. My mom always said, “it can’t be Christmas everyday”.
I Know I Know – Fickle
- I Know I Know is an artist based in London. “Fickle” is his second single release this year. The first was a track called “Fade Out”.
- Anyway, he’s got a growing fan base, and there is definitely a bit of a buzz around his name.
- I read somewhere that he actually collaborated with the duo Royal Blood on their track called “Boilermaker”.
- That track was huge as Queens of the Stoneage Josh Homme is credited with the production on that one.
- I looked around the inter-webs, and can’t confirm if I Know I Know was a collaborator on that tune but I did find that he is definitely runs in the same circles as those guys so I guess it like possible that the rumor is true.
Ilton - THE GAME
- We have yet another New York city based artist on tonight’s show in ILTON. His new single “The Game” is the final single from his recently released EP, “Potential”. The EP is 6 tracks and I think it is pretty good. It’s a mix of electronic, pop, and R&B flavors.
- ILTON says that “The Game” is a track about how he views his life. Some will say that life just works itself out own its own.
- ILTON says that he believes that we have to play the game of life as best we can and take ownership of our wins and losses.
- This new single, and the entire EP actually was produced by Aguava so I have to give him and ILTON some props for putting together such a strong project.
Ryan Egan – Weeknights
- Ryan Egan is an artist who originally hails from New Jersey. He later moved to New York and then to Paris, to follow love and to make a go at the European scene in terms of his music career.
- “Weeknights” is his first single release since moving to Paris and it is the lead single for his forthcoming debut album. The album will be entitled “Soft Power” and it is set for release in April of next year.
- I think it’s a steamy and romantic feeling first offering. He says that the song is about “summer nights in the city, nervous hook ups and livng with your heart on your sleeve.”
NoSo – Suburbia
- NoSo is the moniker of now LA-based artist Abby Hwong. She is originally from Evanston, Illinois Fun fact, that is the suburb where the movie Mean Girls is set in.
- She just got signed to Partisan Records so congrats on that NoSo!
- She made the instrumental for this track while she was in college. She didn’t know what the lyrics would be until she was inspired by a FaceTime call she had with her friends back home. It reminded her of her experiences growing up in suburbia and that’s what the song ended up being about.
PART 4 SONGS
Silo Hill - No I Don’t Quite Know What You Mean
Catherine Moan – Wasted
Tall Black Guy & Ozay Moore (feat Kumbaya) - Viberite
Hollis - Let Me Not
mauv – Manual
Annie Bass - Crazy
PART 4 FACTS
Silo Hill - No I Don’t Quite Know What You Mean
- Silo Hill is an artist from Wyoming. I think this song has an interesting sound. It kind of reminds me of a song that would be in a musical-type kind of movie or TV show.
- There is some really nice twists and turns in this track. The vocals are catchy and I love all the guitar work. It’s a high energy track that is very well composed.
- This is Silo Hill’s first single from his soon-to-be released debut album. The album is entitled “Neither Here Nor There” and it is out this Friday.
Catherine Moan - Wasted
- Catherine Moan is an electronic pop artist from Philly. Her music definitely is retro-wave; it’s very 80s and really quite good.
- “Wasted” is the latest single from her newly released 8-track album. The album is called “Chain Reaction” is it comes to us via Born Losers Records.
- She has a pretty cool creative process that I thought was worth sharing. She says she just locks herself in her room, turns on the mic, and then just keeps experimenting until something sticks. I’m always amazed by people who do this kind of thing because I’m more of a “planner”, you know, pen to paper type of person.
Tall Black Guy & Ozay Moore (feat Kumbaya) - Viberite
- This is a pretty big release in the underground hip hop world.
- Tall Black Guy and Ozay Moore are some very talented emcees, songwriters, and producers on their own but they have just announced that their forthcoming debut collab LP is now available for pre-order.
- The album is called, “Of Process and Progression” and it will officially drop on October 22nd.
- This track features another highly talented artist in Queens-based Kumbaya. What can I say, this track is so dope. I can’t help be reminded of A Tribe Called Quest when I heard this one, because of the beats, and the rhymes. This is definitely a huge track for all the hip hop heads out there.
Hollis - Let Me Not
- Hollis, aka Hollis Wong-Wear, is kind of a big deal. She is from the Bay Area, but really started her music career in Seattle. Now, she has returned to California, currently based in LA.
- “Let Me Not” is taken from her very highly anticipated debut solo album, “Subliminal”, which is send to be released early next year via AntiFragile.
- I saw VERY high anticipated because she was nominated for a Grammy back in 2013 for her songwriting work on Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ massively successful album “The Heist”.
- Her debut solo EP was released just before the pandemic started last year so maybe this is the year where her solo career can really take flight.
mauv – Manual
- I am really feeling this track. I love the instrumental. It is Mauv’s latest and it comes to us via All My Thoughts.
- It’s very expansive and impactful, yet the entire track also feels kind of intimate. I think it’s because of the vocals. They are kind of lowkey and the lyrics are delivered in a spoken word poetry style, I like it a lot.
- Mauv is an artist from London, and although he’s kind of a newcomer, he’s starting to really grow his profile in that whole South London music scene so he is definitely someone I will be keeping an eye on.
Annie Bass - Crazy
- Yes, we are going back to back in the electronic genre to end off tonight’s show.
- Annie Bass is a singer-songwriter and producer from Sydney. “Crazy” is her latest and second single for this year.
- I got to give Barnaby Williams props for producing this one. I felt like this track was head-faking me out of my sneakers. I kept expecting a drop but the track just keeps building and building for the entire song.
- Anway, I thought this one was good track to end off the show and to also mark my freedom from quarantine. I was starting to feel a little crazy locked up in my room so crazy is how we’ll close the show.
