Welcome to the Grammar Minute, where we’re saving the English language sixty seconds at a time! I’m Lauren Smyth, and as a writer, here’s something I think you should know about generative AI: I can almost always tell.
Unless a text is written by AI and subsequently heavily edited by a human, it’s very obvious. It’s gotten even more obvious since the introduction of the new Chat GPT. And no, before you ask, I can’t tell you exactly why it’s obvious. I think I’ve just read so many human-written words by now that looking at an AI-generated text is like looking at an AI-generated image. Something inexplicable and subtle and completely jarring is just wrong with it.
So before you go writing your work emails with generative AI, stop and think about whether your audience will be offended by the lack of a personal touch. You have to assume they’ll know. And sometimes, taking the extra time to write it yourself is worth it.
