The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

As broadcast with plenty of our best la's in tow (and apologies to Everton supporters for the image, we just liked the street art, no bias intended).  Tonight on our weekly Round Trip we head for Liverpool while trying unsuccessfully to avoid The Beatles Museum, but we did keep it mostly more contemporary and indie for the grand majority.  Obviously, a city with a very unique flavor all its own, we had some definite highlights from the dearly departed Her's duo, along with other quality entries from The Wombats, Bill Ryder-Jones, and All We Are amongst other worthies past & present.  This is Liverpool, or at least what we could fit into two hours of radio.

Part 1
Her’s – What Once Was
pizzagirl – seabirds
The Shipbuilders – Feeling In My Pocket
She Drew The Gun – Something For The Pain
The Dead 60’s – Riot Radio
Tramp Attack – Oh! When The Sun Goes Down
The Mysterines – Old Friends Die Hard

Facts
Her’s – What Once Was
- We start tonight with one of biggest tragedies to visit the Liverpool music scene in quite a long time. This band was the duo of Stephen Fitzpatrick & Audun Laading.
- In August 2018 they released their debut album Invitation to Her’s, which caught fire with indie heads the world over, enough so to give them the abilitiy to tour in the US.
- Unfortunately, as soon as the band caught fire, the flame was snuffed out on March 27, 2019 as the duo were killed in a terrible traffic accident in Arizona. Stephen & Audun were just 24 and 25 respectively at the time of their passing, a major shock that still reverberates to this day, may they rest in power.
pizzagirl – seabirds
- This is the solo project of Liam Brown, who does point out that the artist is both Not a girl, nor is there any affiliation with pizza.
- Brown actually this moniker this year with a new single and goes under two winks, I love you nowadays.
The Shipbuilders – Feeling In My Pocket
- Back to 2016 with this tune, a standalone single. The band have been around since 2014, and of course hail from the famed city that naturally no longer actually builds ships.
She Drew The Gun – Something For The Pain
- Fast forward a bit on the timeline to this joint, which featured on the band’s 2018 album Revolution of Mind.
- The band that grew up right across the Mersey on the Wirral Peninsula got a big break a couple years before that, being named Glastonbury’s Most Promising Young Band.
The Dead 60’s – Riot Radio
- I don’t know what it is about ska & reggae-influenced stuff that evokes so much radio imagery, but no worries on our side.
- This is a ska punk band that was around back in the aughts, with this tune the opening salvo on their 2005 self-titled debut album.
Tramp Attack – Oh! When The Sun Goes Down
- Similar era here, from the group’s 2004 album Attack Attack Attack!!!
- A quite combustible element, the band were around for about 10 years with three on again periods before calling it quits again, finally doing so for real in 2011.
The Mysterines – Old Friends Die Hard

Part 2
(BBC 1964 Liverpool vs Arsenal)
Gerry & The Pacemakers – You’ll Never Walk Alone
Gerry & The Pacemakers – Ferry Cross The Mersey
The Wombats – Running Up That Hill (Triple J Like A Version 2022)
Trudy & The Romance – Is There A Place I Can Go
Monks – Sundried
Professor Yaffle – Most of My Air

Facts
(BBC 1964 Liverpool vs Arsenal)
Gerry & The Pacemakers – You’ll Never Walk Alone
Gerry & The Pacemakers – Ferry Cross The Mersey
- Back to 1964 as Liverpool clinched the title vs Arsenal, manager Bill Shankly’s first with the club.
- Been kind of a down year on both the red & blue sides of Liverpool, especially so with Everton who are both struggling to stay in prem and fighting off what is becoming a crippling amount of debt, which obviously is not helped at all with a slide down to the championship in general, but could be very, very bad for The Toffees.
The Wombats – Running Up That Hill (Triple J Like A Version 2022)
- A little cover of Kate Bush on the famed Triple J Like A Version, which broadcasts in Australia and might just be the best thing going on radio nowadays…I mean, if this show isn’t factored in…obviously.
- This was the famed Liverpool band’s fourth appearance on the show, by the way, and they really have nailed it every time.
Trudy & The Romance – Is There A Place I Can Go
- The kids from Liverpool that pop your cotton socks off, as the band describes themselves, have been around since 2014.
- This tune in particular appeared on their deluxe version of Sandman which was released in 2021, with the original version of the LP dropping back in 2019 during the beforefore times.
Monks – Sundried
- This is a rather new phenomenon on the Scouse music scene, with this band about to embark on a headliner tour.
- Released back in 2018, this was kind of the band’s intro to the world along with another tune called Dreamboat.
Professor Yaffle – Most of My Air
- Another new band on the scene to close the first hour.
- Professor Yaffle featured this tune on their fourth career album Let There Be Light, released late last year in October.

Part 3
Bill Ryder-Jones – Don’t Be Scared, I Love You
Clean Cut Kid – Our Wasted Hours
Casino – Love Go On
Seatbelts – Hey, Hey Tiger!
The Night Café – You Change with the Seasons
The Zutons – Valerie
Red Rum Club – Would You Rather Be Lonely

Facts
Bill Ryder-Jones – Don’t Be Scared, I Love You
- Starting slow & wistful for here in part 3, this one from The Coral co-founder Bill Ryder Jones.
- This tune appeared on the artist’s solo album Yawn, released in 2018, which was followed by Ryder’s 5th solo LP called Yawny Yawn. EXCITEMENT.
Clean Cut Kid – Our Wasted Hours
- Off an album from last year called HISS, this band is the quartet of Mike, Evelyn, Gareth, and Ross who not only all have names that would rank high on the common English names chart, but also have been around together since debut in 2015.
Casino – Love Go On
- This is a rather newly formed band that describes their sound as soul, rock, indie.
- This tune dropped last year as a standalone single, and I’d put it more in the vintage garage rock sound.
Seatbelts – Hey, Hey Tiger!
- Another tune from last year right here, this from the band’s debut album called A World Inbetween.
- They also have a slew of EP’s you can go check out since debut in 2018, only 5 years and this band has a good bit of work under their belt.
The Night Café – You Change with the Seasons
- Going back on the timeline here to 2017, this off The Night Café’s album called Get Away from the Feeling.
- The band itself is quintet, this year celebrating 10 years since formation, so congratulations are due there.
The Zutons – Valerie
- Of course, most would know this as an Amy Winehouse number, but no, this is the OG.
- Released in 2006 on the band’s album Tired of Hanging Around, it of course blew up with the Amy Winehouse cover almost topping the chart the next year.
- The song is actually for Valerie McCabe, a celebrity makeup artist who the lead singer was dating at the time, but she could not get into the UK to see him, because she had a recent DUI.
Red Rum Club – Would You Rather Be Lonely
- And in what is this kid’s favorite moniker of the night, our final tune is from 2019’s Matador LP.
- The obvious fans of Stanley Kubrick made debut back in 2016.
Part 4
The Beatles – In My Life
George Harrison – I’d Have You Anytime
The La’s – There She Goes
Her’s – Harvey
All We Are – Keep Me Alive
Glen Check – Cactus, Cactus
bobae – AhChoo!

Facts
The Beatles – In My Life
George Harrison – I’d Have You Anytime
- I had to do it, I just had to. That’s all I’m gonna say aside from shouts to my old man back in the US, who raised me and quite well on The Fab 4, which coincidentally is how long it’s been since I was back home.
The La’s – There She Goes
- And speaking of family, this one of course featured in a film that has always been a major reference point in our household, So I Married An Axe Murderer starring Nancy Travis & Mike Myers.
Her’s – Harvey
- And we could not finish off our show tonight without another Invitation to Her’s as we ready to fly back to Korea.
- It’s crazy to think they’ve been gone four years already. Feels like only yesterday.
All We Are – Keep Me Alive
- This band has been around since 2013 and it seems like they’re still going strong.
- A trio out of Liverpool, this would be off the band’s s/t debut album from 2015, and they’ve since released 3 more LP’s.
Glen Check – Cactus, Cactus
- This is the latest from the veteran Seoul-based band, who made debut in 2011.
- The tune also comes with a decent semi-animated video you can check out as well, which dropped early this month.
bobae – AhChoo!
- This is the moniker of t/n Yoon Bobae, who has been around as a soloist since 2019.
- This would be the artist’s latest single but is not super new, released last year.
