Hey, brand Growth Heroes. This is Marisa from Perfect Ted. We are the brand behind Positive Energy powered by Matcha Green Tea. We sell our ready-to-drink matcha energy drinks in three flavors, and the best organic, ceremonial-grade matcha that you can.
We're stoked at our success today, but there have been plenty of screw-ups along the way.
Here's one of our many brand growth bloopers, and it goes a little bit like this:
I convinced Teddy and Levi that we needed a way bigger stand than we initially got. So we were spending a lot of money on this, on this event,
We'd had the ingredients delivered at our manufacturer, and we get a call two weeks before London Coffee Festival where the product was meant to be....
...I'm sorry, Teddy. There's been a fire at our trial facility. We're not gonna be able to do the trial production. And the trial production was just a small batch that we knew that the recipe would work and we'd sell those or give those away. You know, we had one option, which was if you didn't want the ingredients to go out of date and waste order, more ingredients, go for a full production run and just hope it works.
The idiots that we were, we decided to pull the trigger. We ordered more ingredients. We went into production and Marissa and I were there at the manufacturer sitting there waiting for them to come in with a sample for us to try. And you just see the owner of the factory come in. He was wearing a white t-shirt and I think light-colored trousers at the time.
He was green and he said, I'm really, really sorry. We can't CAN the product. I thought I was gonna cry. Yeah, we panicked, but fortunately, there was an incredible man there named James, who we actually have hired as our operations manager now, which is so funny. It comes so full circle. But he offered a really, really compelling solution.
Basically what had happened is matcha is really tough and greedy to work with, and so one of the benefits of that struggle early on is that we've developed a proprietary process. This means yes, it's really hard to work with, but now we've got a barrier to entry because we have the experience of how to overcome it.
And so we obviously had to hire the guy that knows the solution!
