[00:02:06 - 00:02:09] A, they have a deal with Marvel, which is kind of confusing.
[00:02:09 - 00:02:11] I did some research.
[00:02:11 - 00:02:16] Basically, in the 90s, Marvel was the going bankrupt.
[00:02:16 - 00:02:20] So they sold off their film rights of their most popular characters.
[00:02:20 - 00:02:23] Being Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Hulk.
[00:02:23 - 00:02:27] It's probably ended up being a good long-term financial move for them.
[00:02:27 - 00:02:29] Yes, I would say it did.
[00:02:29 - 00:02:32] So they happened to sell Spider-Man to Sony.
[00:02:32 - 00:02:40] So now that we have Marvel being this cinematic giant, at least in 2012, I would say still
[00:02:40 - 00:02:44] kind of now, but we're like gearing up to be a cinematic giant gearing up to be
[00:02:44 - 00:02:45] cinematic giants.
[00:02:45 - 00:02:50] When Marvel comes to Sony, it's like, hey, like, we kind of want Spider-Man back.
[00:02:50 - 00:02:51] Sony says no.
[00:02:51 - 00:02:53] Which was also probably a wise move on there.
[00:02:53 - 00:02:54] Also probably a wise on Sony's part.
[00:02:54 - 00:03:00] But Sony has this clause in their contract with Marvel that if they do not start production
[00:03:00 - 00:03:06] of a Spider-Man movie every five years and nine months to the day, it instantly reverts
[00:03:06 - 00:03:09] back to Marvel, all of the Spider-Man IP that Sony owns.
[00:03:09 - 00:03:13] So this is a big middle finger to Marvel a little bit?
[00:03:13 - 00:03:16] This movie is a massive middle finger to Marvel.
[00:03:16 - 00:03:23] Because Raimi 4 was in production and supposed to be churning and working.
[00:03:23 - 00:03:26] And then Raimi felt so bad about Spider-Man 3.
[00:03:26 - 00:03:28] He felt like he let down the fans.
[00:03:28 - 00:03:33] The studio kind of wanted to pivot in another direction because Spider-Man 3 was critically
[00:03:33 - 00:03:34] bombed.
[00:03:34 - 00:03:35] Probably.
[00:03:35 - 00:03:38] And that whole thing kind of fell apart.
[00:03:38 - 00:03:42] So they're like, Frick, we got to start a production for a Spider-Man movie soon.
[00:03:43 - 00:03:47] So they kick-started this production really fast.
[00:03:47 - 00:03:51] Some other context cultural things that matter in my opinion.
[00:03:51 - 00:03:56] Mark Webb, who directed this movie, do you know how many features he had done before?
[00:03:56 - 00:03:57] He's got to be zero.
[00:03:57 - 00:03:58] One.
[00:03:58 - 00:03:59] One.
[00:03:59 - 00:04:00] 500 days of summer.
[00:04:00 - 00:04:01] Oh!
[00:04:01 - 00:04:02] I like that movie.
[00:04:02 - 00:04:03] I like it too.
[00:04:03 - 00:04:04] It's not like the best movie ever, but that's a fun movie.
[00:04:04 - 00:04:07] I hate summer as a character, but that's kind of the point of the movie.
[00:04:07 - 00:04:11] That's also fair and probably the point of the movie.
[00:04:11 - 00:04:17] But Sony looked at him, and again, this is all hyper- not hyper-perperly, what am I trying
[00:04:17 - 00:04:18] to say?
[00:04:18 - 00:04:21] A hypothetical situation that I have in my mind.
[00:04:21 - 00:04:25] It's probably a little biased, but that's okay.
[00:04:25 - 00:04:33] Sony looked at him and said, hey, we want to tell a more teenage-y superhero movie.
[00:04:33 - 00:04:34] You get that vibe.
[00:04:34 - 00:04:35] Like a million percent.
[00:04:35 - 00:04:40] They basically go to Mark Webb and they're like, you did 500 days of summer, you kind
[00:04:40 - 00:04:43] of bring that vibe into Spider-Man.
[00:04:43 - 00:04:44] Mark Webb said, yes.
[00:04:44 - 00:04:49] My theory is that Sony also kind of wanted to just have a young director that they could
[00:04:49 - 00:04:53] push around and kind of manhandle into things.
[00:04:53 - 00:04:56] Which sounds like is kind of what happened.
[00:04:56 - 00:04:58] Which is what happened- At least in the second movie.
[00:04:58 - 00:05:02] And kind of here, but it's to a lesser degree.
[00:05:02 - 00:05:08] The other cultural thing that Sony said is in 2008, what superhero movie came out.
[00:05:08 - 00:05:09] Iron Man.
[00:05:10 - 00:05:11] The Dark Knight.
[00:05:11 - 00:05:13] The Dark Knight.
[00:05:13 - 00:05:18] Which was this gritty kind of reinvention of the superhero genre.
[00:05:18 - 00:05:19] Yes.
[00:05:19 - 00:05:24] Sony saw that and said, hey Mark Webb, make Spider-Man gritty and dark.
[00:05:24 - 00:05:25] And Mark Webb said, okay.
[00:05:25 - 00:05:30] That's a lot of asks, especially for a fun character like Spider-Man.
[00:05:30 - 00:05:31] It's true.
[00:05:31 - 00:05:38] But I think that sets the stage for why this movie kind of is the way it is.
[00:05:38 - 00:05:42] And you can love it, you can hate it, we'll get into it, but that is kind of-
[00:05:42 - 00:05:45] I do think given all those things, this movie still turns out pretty good.

[00:06:16 - 00:06:17] They're so believable.
[00:06:17 - 00:06:19] And I think it's because like they fell in love in real life.
[00:06:19 - 00:06:24] I'm sure there's like some stuff there, but like they're just decently well written
[00:06:24 - 00:06:25] in their chemistry.
[00:06:25 - 00:06:27] Their chemistry is phenomenal.
[00:06:27 - 00:06:29] Gwyn's great.
[00:06:29 - 00:06:30] Emma Stone.
[00:06:30 - 00:06:32] Emma Stone's just killer.
[00:06:32 - 00:06:38] She is one of the most charismatic performers out there.
[00:06:38 - 00:06:40] Anytime she wants to be likable.
[00:06:40 - 00:06:41] She's likable.
[00:06:41 - 00:06:42] I love her.
[00:06:42 - 00:06:46] I do think that like I said this in my litter box review of this movie.
[00:06:46 - 00:06:49] She's the best live action Spider-Man love interest.
[00:06:49 - 00:06:50] I agree.
[00:06:50 - 00:06:55] And maybe just best love interest like even in the animated world too.
[00:06:55 - 00:07:00] She has lots of, I mean it's like, I kind of disagree about animated world,
[00:07:00 - 00:07:01] but that's okay.
[00:07:01 - 00:07:02] We'll get into that.
[00:07:02 - 00:07:04] I'm sure he's out on that one honestly.
[00:07:04 - 00:07:07] She has so much agency and feels like a real person.
[00:07:07 - 00:07:10] And I honestly think Kirsten Dunst does too.
[00:07:10 - 00:07:11] Yeah.
[00:07:11 - 00:07:12] I would agree.
[00:07:12 - 00:07:16] There are some Kirsten Dunst haters out there, but I think MJ has a lot of agency
[00:07:16 - 00:07:21] as well and doesn't feel like the damsel in distress.
[00:07:21 - 00:07:22] Yes.
[00:07:22 - 00:07:24] But Gwyn feels so real.
[00:07:24 - 00:07:25] Yes.
[00:07:25 - 00:07:26] Yeah.
[00:07:26 - 00:07:29] I mean, and Andrew Garfield is greatest Spider-Man.
[00:07:29 - 00:07:33] Even Peter, even though his Peter maybe isn't the best Peter written, he's still great.
[00:07:33 - 00:07:38] Like he feels like Spider-Man like within this movie at least.
[00:07:38 - 00:07:45] And I mean, again, like Sony is going for this kind of dark night-esque take on Spider-Man.
[00:07:45 - 00:07:49] So if you don't like that, you're not going to love this movie.
[00:07:49 - 00:07:53] But Mark Webb said in an interview of like the behind the scenes movie is like Peter's
[00:07:53 - 00:07:57] parents died and we see that and we don't see that, but we see them leaving him
[00:07:57 - 00:07:58] with Uncle Ben.
[00:07:58 - 00:07:59] Yeah.
[00:07:59 - 00:08:04] And Mark Webb was like, realistically, there would be lots of emotional turmoil of a kid
[00:08:04 - 00:08:06] who has been through this traumatic event.
[00:08:06 - 00:08:07] Yeah.
[00:08:07 - 00:08:11] And that's what they tried to put into Peter, whether that's comic accurate or not, it's
[00:08:11 - 00:08:12] another discussion.
[00:08:12 - 00:08:17] But I really like that choice of like, I mean, Andrew Garfield feels the most
[00:08:17 - 00:08:21] teenager-y out of any Spider-Man.
[00:08:21 - 00:08:22] He is.
[00:08:22 - 00:08:23] I know.
[00:08:23 - 00:08:24] He does not feel the most teenager-y.

[00:09:05 - 00:09:08] And this is just a choice that the movie made.
[00:09:08 - 00:09:11] I like that Peter just tells Gwen who he is.
[00:09:11 - 00:09:12] I love it.

[00:09:13 - 00:09:16] I like it, one, because we know where we're going.
[00:09:16 - 00:09:20] Like, if you've seen these movies before, it's hard not to think about what happens
[00:09:20 - 00:09:22] in two when you're watching one.
[00:09:22 - 00:09:29] So it feels almost more tragic, like a spoiler alert for a movie that's over a decade old.
[00:09:29 - 00:09:34] But also, we've seen Peter trying to hide his identity before.
[00:09:34 - 00:09:37] And I'm not saying we need to do something different for the sake of doing something
[00:09:37 - 00:09:38] different, but it's interesting.
[00:09:38 - 00:09:41] It's a different kind of vibe to their relationship that I think works really well.
[00:09:41 - 00:09:42] I agree.
[00:09:42 - 00:09:48] And I think, again, if you're a comic purist...

[00:10:16 - 00:10:19] He hasn't really learned that his identity can kill people yet.

[00:10:20 - 00:10:24] So it works for the movie a million percent.
[00:10:24 - 00:10:29] And then it creates an interesting dynamic between Gwen and her dad.
[00:10:29 - 00:10:30] It just works for the movie.
[00:10:30 - 00:10:31] It just does.
[00:10:31 - 00:10:33] I also love Captain Stacey.
[00:10:33 - 00:10:34] Yeah.
[00:10:34 - 00:10:35] He's solid in this movie.
[00:10:35 - 00:10:38] He's not the best character, but he's solid.
[00:10:38 - 00:10:42] I would say the lizard is not the best villain.
[00:10:42 - 00:10:48] I would say he's not super sympathetic, but he's fine.
[00:10:48 - 00:10:53] He's a placeholder and he works to get this first Spider-Man adventure off the ground for
[00:10:53 - 00:10:54] this iteration.

[00:10:55 - 00:10:59] There are 20 minutes of deleted scenes in this movie.

[00:11:16 - 00:11:23] It makes him so sympathetic and you really see him wrestle going on the arc of going
[00:11:23 - 00:11:24] insane.
[00:11:24 - 00:11:29] Well, yeah, because obviously he starts out as someone who wants to help people.

[00:11:30 - 00:11:34] And he ends as that too, but I would have loved a lot more tension within the cut
[00:11:34 - 00:11:39] that we got of how did he get to this point where he wants to turn everybody into
[00:11:39 - 00:11:40] lizards?

[00:11:41 - 00:11:48] The arc in the theatrical cut is very serviceable, but there are some massive jumps that you
[00:11:48 - 00:11:49] take.

[00:11:50 - 00:11:53] And I mean, I understand maybe cutting some stuff for pacing.
[00:11:53 - 00:11:58] I mean, this movie is still over two hours, two fifteen-ish.

[00:12:04 - 00:12:06] Maybe the villain could have been better, sure, but I don't think it ruins the

[00:12:51 - 00:12:52] Again it's like a kid made it.

[00:12:54 - 00:12:57] Why don't we get more hate on like Rami's wrestling suit that he

[00:13:05 - 00:13:09] I love this movie's realist game practical approach to the world of
