Good day to all tuning into this podcast. Today, we delve into the wisdom enshrined within the pages of Rambam, specifically his teachings on charity.
Rambam, Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon, also known as Maimonides, provided us with eight levels of giving charity, each one greater than the next in merit. The highest level of giving, he teaches, is to uphold another by giving them an occupation, or a loan to support their business, or entering into a partnership with them, to strengthen their hand, so they do not need to ask others for assistance.
From this, we understand a profound lesson that extends beyond the act of charity, and into our everyday interactions with our fellow humans. The greatest form of giving is not merely to sustain, but to empower, to enable another to stand on their own feet. This is a lesson in dignity, respect, and true kindness.
As we go about our day, let's try to apply this teaching in our lives. When we see someone in need, let's think about how we can provide not just a temporary solution, but a long term one that empowers them, enriches their lives, and increases their self-reliance.
In this way, we pay tribute to the wisdom of Rambam, and we contribute to the creation of a society built on mutual respect, dignity, and true kindness.
