Kirsten D.:

Hello, and welcome back to the Spartan Orientation Station. I'm your host, Kirsten, and today we are talking about the top five things to bring to your residence hall room. Today, I am joined

Aniyah T.:

by Aniyah Kennedy

Luca C.:

and Luca.

Kirsten D.:

Great. So our first question is, what do I not need to bring or what comes in my room?

Aniyah T.:

It generally comes with like very basic furniture. So your desk, a desk chair, a dresser of some kind. Sometimes it's split. Sometimes it's one full one with four drawers.

Kirsten D.:

So when thinking about bringing stuff, what is something that you did not bring the day that you moved in that you really ended up needing? You do need a fan for the room. You do. 1000%. But you also need the fan for your bed.

Aniyah T.:

That was the one thing

Kirsten D.:

I needed and I bought the next day.

Kennedy A.:

I would say batteries. A lot of things needed batteries and batteries was not on the shopping list.

Luca C.:

Nightstands that attach, especially if you're lofting your

Kennedy A.:

Oh, yeah.

Aniyah T.:

I had friends who had, like,

Kirsten D.:

the bed caddy that went on the side. So, kind of on the flip side of that, what is something that you did bring with you that you absolutely did not need?

Luca C.:

My roommate was a big fan of sports like skiing, hockey, basketball, soccer, all that good stuff. So I would definitely recommend some things like that, especially basketballs and soccer balls. Those can be rented from intramural sports. So if you don't plan on doing them every single day and it's kind of a once a month activity, that's something you don't need to be super prepared with.

Kennedy A.:

Yeah, and I would say vacuums, trash bags, you don't need to bring, because that's offered at the service desk in the residence halls as well.

Aniyah T.:

You can also, if feasible for you, don't bring all of your wardrobe. When you first come, obviously you will need a lot more summer stuff than you think. And then I would throw in a few zip up hoodies or over shirts in a spring jacket, maybe. And that's all you need. Because when you go back for your first break, either fall break or Thanksgiving break, that's when you bring some of the heavier stuff.

Kirsten D.:

What can you not bring with you? What is not allowed in the residence hall rooms?

Kennedy A.:

Air fryers, rice cookers, anything food appliance wise other than a microwave.

Luca C.:

Any AC unit you might find on Amazon or things like to be put in by yourself.

Kirsten D.:

Great. So to kind of wrap us up, if a student was thinking about one random item they should bring, what would you recommend?

Aniyah T.:

I knew how I liked my desk setup. So I either replicated or brought the bits and pieces I like from home. If you're particular about something, I would say bring that.

Kennedy A.:

I would say an air purifier.

Luca C.:

Something that has saved me multiple times was a mini tool kit. Nothing extravagant whatsoever, just really simple $20 Amazon basics screwdrivers, scissors, ruler, tape measure, things like that has come in handy more times than I can count.

Aniyah T.:

You also will need cold medicine. Do not have the experience I had where you got sick and then now you have to venture out to get said cold medicine. That's not a fun thing to do.

Kirsten D.:

Just get like a basic med kit. Like get your band aids, get your Neosporin, get your cold medicine.

Kennedy A.:

But it's better to have

Kirsten D.:

it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Luca C.:

I want to add on to something not to bring or think about bringing based on the timeline. Something I would absolutely wait on or wait for communication with suite mates and roommates is bathroom supplies. You don't necessarily know if you're going to have a communal style bathroom, you're not going to be the one that needs to clean that every day. That's handled by the staff, so you don't really need any extenuous cleaning supplies. But if you are in a suite style, you know, that becomes your responsibility to clean that bathroom, and then you need to work with your suite mates and roommates to figure out the process of how you guys are going to clean that

Aniyah T.:

together. Highly recommend.

Kirsten D.:

Great. Well, thank you guys so much. This is great info and Spartans. Good luck moving in. We'll see you next time.

Kirsten D.:

Bye. Bye.
