The Council of the European Union has adopted its negotiating position on a new piece of legislation to create a more efficient rail infrastructure in Europe.
The legislation, which forms part of the European Commission’s ‘greening freight’ package, aims to increase the availability of infrastructure through better planning processes and achieve better cross-border coordination in the single European railway area.
Several rail freight unions have rebuffed the Council’s railway infrastructure capacity regulation, arguing that it will not improve cross-border rail freight services.
In a joint letter, the unions argued that the approach set out by the European Council does not go far enough to achieve the stated objectives, because the proposed regulations are unbinding.
The unions also questioned whether the EU has given up on its objective to achieve 50% rail freight growth by 2030.

Production on Škoda’s new fleet of 52T trams for Prague is now underway.
The first stage involves the fabrication of sheet metal parts, and follows extensive work by Škoda Group and the Prague Transport Company (DPP) to develop the final vehicle design and production documentation.
Three trams will be built for testing and homologation, before mass production and roll-out begins.
Prague could welcome up to 200 new ForCity Plus 52T trams in total. The fleet will be technologically advanced, featuring a low floor design with no steps. They will also be equipped with eco-friendly air-conditioning and energy-efficient LED lighting.
