In her first speech since being appointed Chancellor on Friday afternoon, Rachel Reeves has outlined how the government will drive growth through planning, housebuilding and infrastructure.
The measures that were announced include a return to mandatory housebuilding targets – this will see the delivery of 1.5 million new homes over the course of the next five years, whilst the cutting of red tape and support for local authorities will ensure that planning is reformed.
Clean energy will also receive a boost as the ban on onshore wind farms is lifted.

As the Prime Minister prepares to meet metro-mayors, the County Councils Network has urged Sir Keir Starmer to make sure that county councils are involved in the conversation.
Outlining how less than half of the population is covered by a metro-mayor, CCN Chairman Tim Oliver outlined how county councils have experience and expertise with attracting and spending billions of pounds a year on economic development, infrastructure and regeneration investment.
Also mentioned was the 2024 Manifesto for Counties, which has asked the new government to be bold and ambitious with devolution around the country.

The Department for Education has announced that the new Education Secretary has already begun work to improve the relationship between the government the teaching profession.
After being confirmed as Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Education Secretary on Friday afternoon, Bridget Phillipson has begun work to recruit a further 6,500 new teachers. This will not only improve the relationship between the profession and the government, but also ‘transform the image of teaching
The education secretary said she has made it her first priority to write to the people at the centre of making change happen.
