Good morning.

And welcome to morning cereal

Okay, good morning and welcome to Friday.

You made it again and

who would have guessed it?

Well last Friday I called everyone a

quitter because it was

National Quitters Day and well done

I haven't heard that anyone has quit just

yet. But if you're

just hanging on good news

Apparently we're a nation of quitters

because not only are we quitting our

current president next week

Today is National Ditch

Your New Year's resolution day

I mean, how many days do we need to tempt

us to quit our New Year's

resolutions? Stay strong people

You can do it

And if you do quit today is National Day

of Judgment. So there's that

Actually the Day of Judgment

is not the return of Christ

Its intent is a fun holiday that reminds

us that we are our own best judges

And we don't have to wait until the end

of time to realize our rights and wrongs

All you have to do on Judgment Day is

simply take a glance in the

mirror and be your own judge

Judgment Day is intended to remind us to

be kind and do good

and on that positive note

Let's go ahead and jump right into

today's episode with

today's quotes one fun

Nostalgic quote and then a second quote

to tease our book review

later in the episode as usual

I hope one of these quotes will speak to

you and kickstart your

day in a positive direction

All right. Here's the first quote. It's

from funny man Jim Carrey

He said I think everyone should get rich

and famous and do everything they ever

dreamed of so they can see that

It's not the answer in quote if you've

ever seen any interviews with Jim Carrey

He's actually a very intellectual

individual and he seems to have a lot of

insight into human nature

But we've all heard although money does

make life easier at times and it does buy

some really fun toys

True happiness comes from within and it

doesn't require fame and riches

Okay, our teaser quote for the book

review today is a show of interest as

with every other

principle of human relations

must be sincere

Okay, as usual will unpack that here in

just a few minutes

during the book review segment

But first let's jump into our usual dose

of fun and historic facts

from this day in history

today's news facts

are for January 17th in

1773 captain James Cook became the first

to cross the Antarctic Circle in

1917 the United States purchased three of

the Virgin Islands st.

Thomas st. John and st.

Roy they purchased them from Denmark for

just 25 million dollars in

1929 the cartoon character Popeye the

sailor man who loved his spinach

He made his debut appearing in the

newspaper comic strips in

1966 NBC greenlit the

TV show the monkeys in

1981 heavy metal history was made when

bass guitarist Nikki six left the band

London to begin rehearsals

with drummer Tommy Lee and

singer guitarist Greg Leon

effectively marking the

beginning of Motley Crue in

1984 the Supreme Court

ruled five to four that

Private use of home VCRs to tape TV

programs for later viewing did not

violate federal copyright laws

Well, that's a weight off my back so we

can all hang on to those

VHS's without any worry in

1995 the Los Angeles Rams announced that

they were leaving to move to st. Louis

after 49 years in SoCal

Subsequently as we all know the Rams

moved back to SoCal in 2016

Okay, let's go ahead and move on to

birthdays. Happy birthday. If today is

your birthday you share a

birthday with a lot of people

First up Benjamin Franklin

was born on this date in 1706

Al Capone was born in 1899

James Earl Jones. He was

born in 1931 on this date

Betty White she was born

in 1922 and Muhammad Ali in

1942 and people that are having birthdays

today as well that are still with us our

kid rock. He's 53 Jim. Kerry

He's 63 Michelle Obama. She's 61 and

Dwayne Wade. He's still a youngin at 43

now to the music and the movies of the

80s 90s and 2000s the

number one movie on this date in

1978 was Saturday Night Fever

Saturday Night Fever was a huge box

office success raking in

over 200 million dollars

Thanks to John Travolta's popularity in

the incredible soundtrack

Remember John Travolta was on welcome

back caught or TV show at that time great

intro song by the way and

Saturday Night Fever was released as a

double Travolta feature

along with the movie grease

Now the soundtrack was the number one

selling soundtrack of all time from 1977

1977 to 1992 when the bodyguard

soundtrack with Whitney Houston's I will

always love you remake

That knocked it down into second place

Those two are still number one and two on

the all-time list of soundtracks Greece

by the way is number five and

the number one song on this date in

1988 was so emotional by Whitney Houston

and it was Houston's sixth consecutive

number one single which

put her in a three-way tie

With the Beatles and the Bee Gees and

broke the most consecutive number one

singles by a solo artist

Which was previously held by Elvis?

Well, I'm getting emotional just thinking

about all the personal growth that's

coming up in the book review segment

So let's just jump into the book review

segment of morning cereal

As you all know this is where we take a

few moments to reflect on the lessons

learned from the current book

We're reading and currently we're reading

through Dale Carnegie's how to win

friends and influence people

It's a timeless book that is consistently

on all the must-read lists and it's

packed with rock-solid advice and actions

For us all to use and build healthy

foundational concepts to live by

now yesterday we continued part to

chapter 1 entitled do this and you'll be

welcome anywhere and

Carnegie is walking us through the

importance of taking a real

Genuine interest in people and not just

the people that we all

think can be beneficial

But taking interest in

all people that we encounter

taking real interest in other people and

they will in turn they will

take real interest in you and

Yesterday Carnegie illustrated that the

time and effort we take to be thoughtful

towards others doesn't have

to always be some grand gesture

But even small acts can have huge impacts

Carnegie next tells a story about a

gentleman that was trying to sell fuel

unsuccessfully for years to

a large gas station chain and

The gentleman had over the years

developed a very bad attitude and held a

grudge towards the chain and he often

spoke quote hot wrath

Upon the chain stores because they were

purchasing fuel from an out-of-town

dealer and then driving

right by his front door

Well Carnegie had invited this successful

businessman to speak to his class where

he stood in front of the class

Just tearing apart the gas station chain

and Carnegie says quote and still he

wondered why he

couldn't sell them in quote

Carnegie then suggested to the

businessman that maybe he should take a

different approach and Carnegie suggested

that they stage a debate in his class

On whether the gas station chain was

doing more harm than good

Where the gentleman the businessman would

be taking the position to defend the

tactics of the large gas

stations purchasing strategy

So again, the gentleman went to the

executives of the gas station chain, but

this time he said he

wasn't trying to sell them fuel

He said he came to them for the facts

that he needed to win the

debate with Carnegie's class

He asked for exactly one minute of the

executives time and it was with that

expectation that they

agreed to meet with him

The gentleman was not there for personal

gain or to ask for a contract

He showed up with genuine interest and

just hearing about the

company and how it worked

Well, instead of getting just one minute

the executive gave him almost two hours

They called in other executives that had

written books on chain stores and the

executive of the chain store really

showed to the gentleman

That he believed his stores were

providing quote a

real service to humanity

In quote and the gentleman

said of the executive quote

He is proud of what he's doing for the

hundreds of communities his eyes fairly

glowed as he talked in quote

Now the businessman said that the

discussion had opened his eyes and

completely changed the way he viewed the

situation and changed his whole

mental attitude towards the chain stores

The two men were able to personally

connect over the meeting and the

executive asked him to stop back by

So he could hear how the debate came out

and you probably guessed it

But the executive also said to come back

and visit him in the spring as he'd like

to place an order with the businessman

And the businessman is quoted here as

saying quote to me.

That was almost a miracle

Here he was offering to buy fuel without

me even suggesting it

I had made more headway in two hours by

becoming genuinely

interested in him and his problems

Then I could have made him ten years

trying to get him interested

in me and my product in quote

Take interest in others and they will

take interest in you, right?

And Carnegie says here that the gentleman

didn't discover something new that day

That the benefits of taking genuine

interest in others has been around for

millennia a Roman poet said a hundred

years before Christ was born

Quote we are interested in others when

they are interested in us in quote

I'll quote from Carnegie here once more

as he again stresses that

the interest must be genuine

He says quote a show of interest as with

every other principle of

human relation must be sincere

It must pay off not only for the person

showing interest but for the person

receiving the attention

It is a two-way street

both parties benefit in quote

And

Carnegie closes out this chapter by

saying quote if you want others to like

you if you want to develop real

Friendships if you want to help others at

the same time as you help yourself

Keep this principle in mind in quote

Okay, we have finished chapter one of

part two and here is Carnegie's first

principle in part two

This is the principle. He says to keep in

mind to develop real relationships

And you may have guessed it but principle

number one is become

genuinely interested in other people

Nice job over the weekend

Be sure to keep it top of mind when you

were talking to people to slow down for a

moment and take a real

Interest in what they are saying and

where they are at in their lives

I think you'll see right away the

benefits and the relationships this type

of genuine interest can build

Congrats on making it to Friday and the

weekend is nearly upon us

Go out there and make some friends today

and this weekend show

some interest in others

And then be sure to join us again on

Monday as we start chapter 2 of part 2

and that's entitled a

Simple way to make a good first

impression have a fantastic day. Have a
