Ag in a Minute

Brenna, a Minnesota 4-H Agriculture Ambassador, explains the fundamentals of showmanship—a key skill for anyone showing animals in 4-H. In this episode, she explores how showmanship helps youth build confidence, demonstrate knowledge, and strengthen their bond with their animals. Brenna highlights the two main components of success: handling and knowledge. With practice, exhibitors learn not only how to present their animals effectively but also how to care for them and understand their behavior, health, and structure. No matter the species, great showmanship starts with learning, practicing, and asking for tips from others.

Showmanship. What it is and who can do it. In today's podcast, I will be sharing what showmanship is and who can do it. Showmanship is different for every animal, but these are the basics. Hey.

Speaker 1:

My name is Brenna, and this is Ag in a minute with the Minnesota 4-H state agriculture ambassadors. Are you in 4-H or interested in joining? Do you have a love for animals and want to show them? This episode will walk us through tips and tricks to becoming an awesome showman. Showmanship is a vital area of showing your animal.

Speaker 1:

Not only do you get to learn unique aspects of your animal, you get to show off your knowledge and expertise while handling your animal. Showmanship has two key points, handling and knowledge. Handling of your animal will come with time, but practice walking and setting up your animal to become familiar with each other. Knowledge is something that will take a lot of practice, but by learning these details, you will not only become better at knowing your animal, but also more knowledgeable about protecting your animal or animals from diseases and impact your performance in handling while learning about their temperament, muscular, and bone structure and conditioning per shell. Every animal will be shown differently, so it's important to ask others for more tips and tricks for proper showmanship.
