What is W3GMS Thursday Night Roundtable?

Every Thursday evening at 8pm the Crew of 146.985 W3GMS/R get together on air to host a weekly informal net with varying hosts and topics

Thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Parkberg repeater, 146.985 megahertz.

PL tone is 100 hertz.

And if you're using tones, Welch, 94.8.

I've got to find the newer script, my bad.

Take a look at the repeater website on www.w3gms.repeater.com.

Lots of information, loads of information, fun stuff.

If you're new to ham radio or if you're not, I suggest checking out the website.

Besides the roundtable, we also host the 985 workbench on Monday nights at 8 o'clock,

where you can ask technical questions that are focusing around the amateur radio hobby.

And sometimes not questions that, you know, maybe the old Elmers will be able to answer about life,

electronics, electrical stuff, carpentry stuff.

We've got a bunch of woodworkers in the group.

But mostly we ask questions about amateur radio, Monday nights at 8 o'clock.

Newcomers are welcome.

Encouraged to check in.

If you can't stay long, you can check in on our short-time list,

or you can stick around and stay for the long term.

Our discussions are informal, as you can tell,

passing the mic around in order to which each station is called.

So I suggest you write down who's before you and who's after you, especially so you can turn the mic to them.

We usually try to write down everybody on the list, which is good to know in case somebody has to pop out.

It's W3MFB. We usually have a question, and I have two questions tonight.

So we will do that. And don't be too quick to talk. When you hit your PTT button, pause a second or so.

Because we don't want to miss the first part of your call or what you have to say.

And don't forget there's a timer on the repeater, so let off that PTT button, your mic button, every two to three minutes.

So, questions.

Alright, since I'm an October guy, I was born in October, so we're going to...

I'm not sure if...

I know Halloween's around the corner.

We're going to do one holiday at a time in this household.

But, uh, favorite memory of Halloween.

What's your favorite memory of Halloween?

Actually, we'll stick to that. We're going to stay with that.

I have a riddle, but we'll stick to the question.

Favorite memory of Halloween with your kids, so...

Get your, uh...

Get your thinking caps out.

Uh, right now we're going to start with, uh, digital check-ins, who, uh, are going to be on the short-time list.

So, people that need to go do something else, or whatever, uh, short-timers, digital stations, please call.

This is W3MFB.

KV3ZUV, short-timer, mobile.

Uh, that would be, uh, all-star or echolink.

Uh, that's...

That's...

Zulu Bravo 3 Zulu uniform Victor Adam mobile in Newark, Delaware.

We've got you KB3 ZUV. Any other short timers for digital? That would be All Star or Echolink.

Any, nothing heard there. Any RF stations that wish to check into the Thursday Night Roundtable via RF or digital, please call. Short timelapse only.

All right, nothing heard. All right, well, we'll ask again after Adam calls. Hey Adam, you're in the mobile. KB3 ZUV, W3MFB. Favorite Halloween memory. Back to you.

Sure, Mike. Just real quick, you said there were two questions tonight or have you condensed it into one question now?

One question. And then maybe for the second round, they'll pop the riddle in there. So we'll do the favorite Halloween memory for right now.

All right, Mike. Sounds good. W3MFB, KB3 ZUV. Mobile, doing some shopping, some shopping in Delaware.

I got, I got, I got, I don't have enough winter clothes. I don't have enough clothes that fit everything. It makes me, so I've been, I'm, I'm, I'm keeping up with the fitness program.

And all of my winter clothes are just way, way, way too baggy. So after work tonight, I headed, headed down to the Christiana Mall to look for, I got, got myself a nice new turtleneck.

And, and that actually fits. So, but I am driving back now and enjoying this lovely fall weather. Although we have a nor'easter coming through this weekend, which is going to be a big swirling mess, which is, I think, not supposed to hit until Sunday afternoon, which is good.

Because we're supposed to be camping with the Cub Scouts this weekend. And Saturday might just be, might just be kind of windy and drizzly. And I think Sunday is going to be kind of a mess, but I think we'll be wrapping up right around that time.

So fingers crossed. And yeah, Halloween, definitely a lot of treasured memories of Halloween as a kid. I think mainly just, just a lot of trick or treating Halloween parties that we went to.

I remember one year, I think maybe, maybe one of the last years, I really, really tried to trick or treat. I was old, old enough to formulate a plan for trick or treating, but young enough that I would still be kind of cute and people would want to give me candy.

It's one of those things that the older you get when you're like a teenager doing trick or treat, you know, people can kind of tell that you've kind of, you've kind of outgrown it. And so it's not really the same. So I want to say maybe when I was like 12 or 13 years old, I actually like, you know,

plotted out a map of the neighborhood and I'm like, well, I'm going to hit this street and I'm going to hit this street and I'm going to do it in this order. You know, I had my whole thing planned out and I want to say, I must have filled up an entire trash bag. I filled up the, the, the Halloween, uh, little jack-o'-lantern bucket within the first 15 minutes of trick or treat.

And then, and then I went back to, um, I went back to, uh, uh, my, uh, my, my nanny because long story, but we had, we still had, we still had nannies at that age.

And nanny gave me a trash bag and she's like, go out and get more. And I filled the whole trash bag. Uh, and I actually had to stop. I actually had to stop.

My nanny was like, no, you've got enough candy.

You're done.

Your dad will kill you if you bring home any more candy than that.

And so that was that.

So much candy, so much candy, I couldn't even put it.

And that was the last one.

I couldn't top that.

And then in later years, I feel like there was all sorts of, like, parties and Halloween stuff with the football team and things like that.

And it wasn't really the same after that.

So it was the one year I was either 12 or 13.

So it was either 1988 or 1989.

I filled the whole bag and hit the whole neighborhood.

And that was never to be topped again.

With that, maybe we'll get some more short timers here, Mike.

I miss you.

I saw you in the car at CVS the other day, Mike.

I saw all your antennas.

I saw all your mobile rig antennas on your car.

But I was in a hurry.

I had to pick up some prescriptions and get back in time for my conference call at work.

But I saw you out there doing the mobile thing, Mike.

W3MSB from KB3ZUV Mobile.

Adam, thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you.

That's awesome.

I thought I saw you out there.

I was like, wait a minute.

I was like, I guess I'll find out.

I was like, I guess I'll find out.

We're always looking for antennas.

Thank you so much for sharing the story.

I really appreciate it.

And don't forget to get some Henley's and some long underwear for that snow if we ever get it.

But, yeah.

No, it's good to hear you.

Good to hear you.

10 was open up today.

10 meter was open up.

Pretty good at lunchtime.

I made a couple contacts.

One in Belgium and one in San Antonio, Texas.

We talked for a little while.

A little QS Baker in there.

But we talked for about 15 minutes.

And then I went back to work.

So that was fun.

All right.

Well, this is the short timer list.

And this is W3MFB.

Either anybody, RF or digital, would like to check in on the short timer list, please call W3MFB.

Kilo Delta 3 X-Ray.

We'll be in and out.

Have a great night.

3X, thank you.

Thank you for popping in.

Sounding good over here.

Any other stations for the short timer list?

Then we'll move on if we don't hear anything.

RF, digital, that would be Echolink, All Star, or RF.

Please call W3MFB.

Nothing heard.

Nothing heard.

So now we're going to go to the long haul.

The long timers, people can stick around.

We'll do digital check-ins first, please.

All Star, Echo Link, digital check-ins, please call.

Whiskey 8, Charlie Romeo Whiskey.

Here is CR.

Any other stations for digital?

Leave a pause for Mr. Mike.

You never know.

He might pop in later.

And if somebody hears him, please tell me.

All right, so we got CR at the top on digital.

Any RF stations that like to hang out with us on the Thursday night round table, please call.

Whiskey Alpha 3, Victor Echo Echo, WA3, VEE.

Right now, Mike, I'm mobile, but soon to be in the fixed station, but on RF.

Any other stations?

NA3CW.

KC300K.

WA3, Kentucky Fried Turkey.

WA3, KFT.

Alpha Foxtrot 3, Zulu.

Alpha Foxtrot 3, Zulu.

All right, short list tonight.

Okay, so we got...

W8CRW, WA3VEE Mobile, soon to be at the house.

NA3CW, KC300K, WA3KFT, AF3Z.

Any other check-ins?

Just checking.

For the Thursday night round table on 146.985.

All-star, Echo Link, RF, we'll take them.

CR, favorite Halloween memory.

W8CRW, W3MFP.

Very good, Mike.

Thanks for taking a chair.

And good evening all.

Halloween memory.

I wasn't a big trick-or-treater.

I was a strategic trick-or-treater.

From past years out, you knew which houses were likely to give out full candy bars.

And those are the places that I went to.

So I'm not looking to get a lot.

I'm just looking to get good stuff.

That's my memory from Halloween many years ago.

Ron, your turn.

WA3VEE, WHCRW.

Ronnie, WHCRW.

And Thursday night round table with Mike as the host.

WA3VEE Mobile.

Not quite to the house yet, but I will be certainly for the second round.

Mike, thanks for taking a chair tonight.

Again, WA3VEE Mobile.

CR, I have to laugh.

You made me smile here in a van.

I'm thinking strategic.

Never thought of that term applied before, but certainly applicable.

No doubt about it.

You went for quality, not quantity.

That was good.

Oh, my goodness, Mike.

What a great question.

I guess a collective set of really good memories.

Once when I was a kid, well, a couple times, we would get the neighborhood together.

This was down by Banning Park, Newport area of Greater Wilmington.

Where I spent most of my childhood.

And also young adulthood, too, as well.

Where the original station was.

The original DEE station.

In any event, we would get together and we would, I guess, hit the neighborhood.

And we had a pretty good-sized neighborhood.

So we always did pretty well.

But then the best part was to pick out the best candy once you dumped everything out on the table.

Up here in Westchester, one of the coolest memories I ever remember was when my oldest son was taking his younger one around the neighborhood.

It's a pretty good neighborhood.

We could pretty well trust everybody.

I think Deb went out with them one year.

I went out with another.

But one of us would, of course, be giving out candy here at the house.

I just pulled up now.

And I remember, and I think we still have this.

You guys know I do woodworking.

And Deb, I don't know if you know or not, but she is pretty much a sewer.

So she does quilts and used to make clothes and stuff in those days.

And so I remember one costume that Chris had.

He dressed up as a dinosaur.

And I think that was the most candy he ever got because of the cuteness factor.

So Chuck, interested in hearing your stories.

I'm going to go digital here until I get settled in the house, but I'll be back on RF easily for the second round.

So Chuck, your stories.

Should be very interesting.

NA3CW and the group WA3VEE Mobile.

NA3CW.

Well, I don't know how interesting it is.

When N2HM and I were young, he was WA3JYT at the time.

And I was WA3KNB.

We were, and Joe and George,

and Paul and Ringo.

No, not Paul and Ringo.

We were part of Harry's gang, the Friday Nighters.

So one Halloween, we got a great big plastic pumpkin jack-o'-lantern, plastic jack-o'-lantern.

And we put a light in it.

And we went up to what is now the field day site.

And we went up to what is now the repeater site.

But then it was Harry's site, and it had a bunch of towers on it.

And the one in the front was 90 feet high.

So we ran power from the outside of the shack.

It was an outlet along one of the messenger lines out to the tower and up the tower.

And Bob was the climber on this one.

And to this day, Bob still climbs this 300-foot tower to change light bulbs.

So he climbed up and he put this plastic pumpkin jack-o'-lantern up at the top of the 90-foot tower.

And mind you, this is before there was all the houses and before there was a cell tower.

There was nothing up there, just a few trailers and woods.

So we lit that up and drove off cackling.

And you could see that thing for miles.

The one thing we hadn't calculated on, though, was we didn't leave a drain hole.

So eventually it filled up with rain and fell down.

But it was a great beacon.

You could see it from, you know, you could see it from Parksburg.

You could see it from all over the place, up 100 feet high, smiling at the world.

Over to you, Bill.

W car KC3OOK in A3CW.

A3CW.

KC3OOK.

You had me laughing while I was trying to swallow my teeth up.

Well, Mike, thanks for taking the chair tonight.

And, yeah, it's an interesting question.

I met the other night and asked your favorite Halloween costume.

And I couldn't remember any.

But this is a little easier question, most memorable Halloween moment.

Other than some of the tricks rather than treats we did when we got a little older, which I'm not going to say on the air.

I think it was about five years ago.

I lived out here since 1986.

When I first moved here, I just counted.

There were only four houses on a one-mile road, and two of them were Amish.

So I've never had a trick-or-treater.

Never had one at the farm.

When I built a new house here, I never had one until about five years ago.

The neighbors in the house next door moved in, and they have five adopted children.

So I guess seeing them come up for the first time for a trick-or-treat was pretty cool.

I do have the pictures of them.

They've grown up a little bit since then, and they're the only trick-or-treater we ever get, but they come each year.

So that's it for me.

I'm on Termitor John.

WA3KFT.

KC3OOK.

KC3OOK.

WA3KFT.

Well, having visited your house on the hill,

yeah, you're not very well suited for trick-or-treaters.

They've got to know somebody there and how to get there.

They need to come in a car or truck, unload, and then go up the hill to the driveway to your place, Bill.

I've been in this house over 50 years.

So the kids in the neighborhood, when we moved here, are all grown up and gone.

So we're working on a second generation of people.

And don't really remember a whole lot of trick-or-treaters.

Not here.

When I was a kid, I still remember one of the costumes was a Chinese dress, dress-up.

And that and the other one was a ghost.

And I lived on a street that was five blocks long.

And about the middle.

And we would go down one side and come up the other.

And that took about two hours.

And by then, the bag was full.

We never made it end-to-end on the street.

Never happened.

The street was also a block away from the center of town.

So the houses were relatively close.

The properties, eh, maybe 70 to 90 feet wide.

And the old part of the street, the houses were real close together.

Where I grew up, we had large properties.

And that was the newer part of the street.

But I still remember this one house.

It had a porch on the front.

There was a light on the porch.

And I remember going up.

I don't remember doorbell or banging on the door or whatever.

And it took a while for somebody to come to the door.

And other kids, they were impatient.

They would bang on the door.

And they didn't hear anything, didn't see anything.

They'd run away and go to the next house.

Well, I was a little more persistent.

It turns out it was a single lady, elderly.

And she appreciated having...

But she wasn't real fast on her feet.

You had to stand there on the porch for a few minutes while she got to the door.

And then when she found out...

Oh!

Treaters!

All right!

And she would go to the back of the house, to the kitchen.

And this was the best...

Okay!

...from that lady.

And once that happened, every year we made sure that we stopped at that house.

And gave her plenty of time to come to the door.

You know, come on.

Anybody can go to the store and buy candy bars.

But homemade cookies?

Ah!

That was a real treat.

The other thing that we had...

Ah!

Not so much a Halloween parade...

But judging of the costumes...

We went to the local school...

And they had different categories.

And also ages.

Ah!

Sixth grade and younger.

The best ghost.

Ah!

Seventh grade through high school.

The best ghost.

Ah!

Adults.

The best ghost.

Ah!

And witches.

And...

Well, ghosts and witches, I remember.

All right?

And there were...

Half a dozen other categories.

I don't...

I don't remember all the other categories.

But the very last category...

Was the largest family in costume.

Well, I'm the oldest of five kids.

And we had planned on this.

So we figured...

The five of us kids and mom and dad...

Seven.

We don't know anybody in town with seven people in the family.

Well, that night we found out...

Glaciers!

They had five kids too.

And they were actually...

Uh...

I will say...

Uh...

Not necessarily in our backyard.

But the next street...

If you walked out our back door through the backyards...

You would come out...

On Broad Street.

South Broad Street.

And they were two doors up.

And...

The prize...

For the largest family...

All in costume...

Well, wait a minute.

Dykeman's have seven.

Glacier's have seven.

We only have one prize.

Well, the prize was a cake.

So...

The glacier said...

Tell you what...

Come to our house and we'll have a party.

Well, needless to say...

There was no cake left after that party.

So...

Over to...

AF3Z...

Zad...

WA3KFT.

WA3KFT.

Thank you, John.

Very good.

It's good you repeated about the cookies...

Because...

The middle of the story, I guess, was timed out by...

The repeater.

We got to the...

Door that nobody went to...

And you knocked...

And then the suspense hung there...

Until you did the summary at the end...

And said that the cookies were better than candy.

So we got the gist of it.

All right.

Good evening, everybody.

AF3Z here.

And one little...

Public service announcement.

Anybody who's...

A host...

Like Mike here...

It's on the website.

The blurb is on the website.

The pre-ramble...

Or whatever you want to call it.

For both the...

Workbench...

And the round table.

Just go on any one of the pages...

And up at the top...

And you go to the Nets on 95 link...

And at the bottom of that...

Drop-down menu is...

Information for hosts...

Or something like that.

So anyway...

The scripts for both groups...

Are on the website.

And if you've been wondering about doing it...

And you want to see what's involved there...

You can see that on the website.

And...

Give you a little...

A little preparation...

Before you would start...

Thinking about saying...

Yeah, I'll be a host.

And it's very easy.

Favorite.

I don't know if this is my favorite.

This is...

Well, it is in the sense that...

I really can't...

Can hardly remember...

Another specific memory...

From Halloween.

We did the thing...

Of filling up a bag...

And all that stuff.

But...

The most striking...

And memorable Halloween...

I remember...

Was the year...

Of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

And...

Don't ask me how old I was...

I'm probably...

I don't know...

I don't remember...

But I'd be embarrassed probably.

But...

The Cuban Missile Crisis...

Was going on...

And as Halloween approached...

I was worried...

That we might be at war...

And not be able to have Halloween...

And we did have Halloween...

I don't remember...

What happened when...

Anymore...

But talk about a...

Child...

Childish view...

Of the world's...

Events in history...

That was it for me...

So...

That's my...

Primary Halloween memory...

Back to you there Mike...

And thanks for hosting tonight...

W3MFB AF3Z...

W3MFB AF3Z...

W3MFB...

Oh...

When I heard Chuck's story...

You know...

I feel like I asked this question...

Already...

Maybe like...

Two years ago...

I don't know...

But...

I was sitting here...

Like...

Hours ago...

Before the...

Our roundtable...

People started going...

Oh man...

I gotta come up with a question...

Like all day...

I'm like...

So busy at work...

I...

I didn't even have time...

So I just threw that one out of the...

Out of the...

Off the table...

Only because...

You know...

I think the neighbors...

The neighbor has a five-tier...

Uh...

Jack-o'-lantern...

Uh...

Air...

Deck...

Lawn decoration...

You know...

It fills up with air...

It's...

It must be at least...

Twelve feet tall...

And it's lit up...

So it's all big orange...

So big pumpkin...

Little pumpkin...

Medium pumpkin...

All the way to the top...

So...

It's pretty big...

So that probably made me...

Uh...

Made me think of that...

We haven't even started decorating yet...

And...

Uh...

Favorite memories...

Uh...

Of Halloween...

Uh...

We have a really good thing going on here...

We decorate a lot...

We set up for the kids...

Amanda and I dress up...

And we like seeing all the neighbors...

And their little...

You know...

Their little kids...

And the teenagers...

And all that...

That's always fun...

And we make gift bags...

For everybody...

So there's treats...

And tricks in there...

Mostly just toys and things...

Uh...

And we enjoy...

Passing them out...

Uh...

One year...

When we...

The first year here...

I got a...

I had a fire pit...

A portable one...

And I put it in the driveway...

And it wasn't breezy...

So we had that going...

And...

Uh...

We had sodas...

And waters and stuff...

And a couple brews...

For the...

For the dads...

That were walking around...

Uh...

So we got people hanging out...

And we got to meet our neighbors...

And all that...

So that was really fun...

Um...

But yeah...

We just really love Halloween...

It's Halloween...

All...

All...

All year long...

In this household...

Uh...

W3MFB...

With Thursday Night Roundtable...

Seeing if there's any other...

Stragglers out there...

That are listening...

That maybe want to join the group...

Uh...

Before we go to the second round...

Uh...

This is W3MFB...

Uh...

Any RF or digital check-ins...

Who wish to check-in...

Please call...

Nothing heard...

Wow...

Everybody must be busy...

Busy with things to do...

It is...

It was a beautiful day...

Out there...

For sure...

For sure...

For sure...

Now...

Now I'm sitting here going...

Did I ask this one before?

You guys can talk about...

Whatever you want...

On the second round...

Ron...

I think you should be...

Nizzled...

Nizzled in your chair...

With a cat...

On your lap...

So you should be good...

So we're gonna ask this riddle...

This is riddle anyway...

Maybe somebody remembers...

Maybe they don't...

Maybe they don't...

But we will see...

It's very short...

A box...

Without hinges...

Key or lid...

Yet golden treasure...

Inside his head...

What is it?

What is it?

What is...

What is...

A box without hinges...

Key or lid...

Yet golden treasure...

Inside his head...

This is W3MFB...

We're gonna pass it over...

To SCR...

W8CRW...

In the group...

W3MFB...

Very good Mike...

A box without hinges...

I...

I...

I...

I...

I...

I...

I...

I have to think about that one...

I have no clue...

Anyway...

Yep...

Yep...

Halloween is...

Coming up...

Shortly...

And...

To take it to...

Current days...

If you wanna get some good deals...

On candy...

You pick up your Halloween candy...

The day after...

Ron...

Are you...

In the house now?

W8C3VEE...

W8CRW...

W8CRW...

W8CRW...

W8C3VEE...

Yeah...

Nestled in here...

No cats in the lab...

But cats alongside here...

Right on the console...

On the left side...

On the VHF...

UHF side...

So...

Yeah...

Very good...

Boy...

I don't know...

Um...

Golden treasure inside...

I don't know...

Golden egg maybe...

About the only thing I could think of would be golden...

Certainly no money in this house...

That's for sure...

So...

I don't know...

Uh...

That's my guess on the riddle...

Uh...

Don't forget folks...

Anybody operating HF this weekend...

A lot of fun...

A lot of fun...

A lot of fun...

PA Cuso party...

Um...

Your chance to try and work all 67 counties...

In Pennsylvania here...

I got about 63 last year...

But...

Uh...

May not do as well...

Because...

Um...

We lost one of our...

Um...

Former leaders in our unit...

Uh...

85 years old...

Just ill for a short time...

But...

Um...

Long time...

Very dedicated...

Adult scout leader...

Uh...

Served the troop...

Uh...

Served the troop...

And scouting...

For over 65 years...

So...

Um...

His services...

Uh...

Saturday afternoon...

So...

Certainly cut into my operating...

But...

That's okay...

He...

Deserves...

Uh...

Respect...

So...

I'll be doing that...

Uh...

Should be around this weekend...

Especially with the weather...

The way it's supposed to be...

Next weekend...

October 19th...

Is the RF Hill Ham Fest...

It's one of the last...

Ham Fests...

Of the actual...

Active season...

Before we break...

For the holidays...

And we have the...

Uh...

Harrisburg...

Ham Fest...

In January...

So...

A couple of events...

Coming up...

For sure...

It's been a very good year...

For Ham Fest...

For sure...

Although I didn't make...

Nearly as many...

As I wanted to...

So...

Chuck...

Over to you...

NA3CW...

WA3...

VEE...

Hang on one second...

I'm gonna...

Drop back to lower power...

There...

So I don't wipe out the...

TV for Patty...

This is NA3CW...

Um...

I was thinking something...

On the riddle...

I was thinking something similar...

But...

I like Ron's answer better...

An egg...

Um...

I was thinking...

I was thinking...

A skull...

A head...

It's not golden treasure...

Inside...

But...

I don't know...

I think it's pretty valuable...

I think it's pretty valuable...

It's a golden treasure...

That...

Uh...

Uh...

It's a golden treasure...

That...

Uh...

It's a golden treasure...

That...

It's a golden treasure...

That...

Uh...

It's a golden treasure...

That...

Uh...

Keys up pretty good...

With an egg...

Um...

I thought about it later too...

Um...

When we were on Guam...

Uh...

Guam is...

Uh...

Well...

Let's see...

The...

The Spanish owned Guam...

For 300 years...

Before we got it...

And...

A lot of their customs...

Are basically Spanish...

Slash Filipino...

Because it was a...

Uh...

It was a...

Uh...

Arrest stop...

On the...

Uh...

The gold runs...

From the...

From Asia to Spain...

And there's a lot of Filipino traffic...

And a lot of the population...

Is Filipino extraction...

So they...

They do...

Halloween...

Huge...

It's like...

As big as Christmas...

Maybe bigger than Christmas...

They do...

Like we had a...

We had a...

We were in one of the...

Relatively rare...

Residential developments...

So it had a...

You know...

About a one mile loop...

Um...

A street...

Around the...

Outer periphery...

And then a couple of...

Uh...

Culte-sacs in the middle...

And they used to go cruising...

They would line vehicles up...

They'd be...

Decorated...

And they would have...

Music playing...

And they would just...

At slow speed...

Just...

Crawl around the loop...

And...

And...

Do that in various neighborhoods...

And since it was a closed residential neighborhood...

Not a...

Like a road...

Um...

Used to bring in kids from all over the island...

To...

Do...

And they're all related anyway...

To...

Do...

Trick-or-treating in our neighborhood...

But...

Halloween is beyond huge in Guam...

Never saw anything like it...

So...

Anywho...

Um...

Uh...

Change of subject...

We're looking forward to...

Uh...

The return of Joe...

So we can...

Finish that tower job...

It's...

Uh...

A couple of cables...

Uh...

The coax to the antenna on top...

And...

The...

Uh...

Rotor cable...

And then we will crank that baby up...

So I know...

Uh...

I know Bill's looking forward to it...

Certainly Joe is...

But...

Uh...

It was...

It was great to see...

Uh...

All those bolts...

Uh...

Bill...

In that picture...

Holding that plate down...

And...

I think this thing is actually gonna work...

So...

Uh...

Over to you...

KC3OOK...

NA3CW...

NA3CW...

KC3OOK...

Yeah...

I don't have too much more...

For...

For Halloween...

Uh...

But it does remind me...

I gotta go...

Pick up the candy...

And the neighbor's kids get spoiled...

Cause I fill up a big bowl...

And they could take the whole thing...

And share it with their friends...

But...

Yeah...

There's a few things Chuck...

I was actually...

Thinking about maybe riding up tomorrow...

And taking a look...

I realized...

We still don't have a down stop...

When we put it up last time...

It's still on tie wraps...

So before we can crank that thing up...

We gotta figure that out...

So I was gonna look at that...

Maybe tomorrow...

Just to get an idea...

But yeah...

The bolding worked great...

Um...

Just quickly...

For people...

And hearing about this...

And I think most people have seen pictures...

But the...

The base was originally...

It's triangular...

And it was originally...

An anchor bolt...

At each of the legs...

So there's...

There's three legs...

That come down...

In a triangular pattern...

And went...

Directly into the concrete...

Well...

Joe's bolt pattern...

Was an eight by eight pattern...

In the center of...

A three...

By three concrete pad...

So there's a three foot square...

Half inch...

Stainless steel plate...

And...

When we...

Went to crank that thing up...

The first time...

It bowed...

That back leg...

Bowed...

The back of that...

Half inch...

Stainless...

About...

At least...

Three eighths of an inch...

And...

The back went up...

The front went forward...

And it rolled the front...

About an eighth of an inch...

In a real sharp radius...

So...

It's actually a tremendous amount of force...

When that thing first starts up...

But...

We've got it epoxy bolted...

And...

And it all drew back down...

So yeah...

I think we're getting there, Chuck, and I am looking forward to it.

Probably no one as much as, well, I was going to say Joe, but I'm going to say Martha.

He's probably the one that's looking forward to it the most.

So that's about it for me.

I'll be listening out here.

I'll be out in the shop for a while, but I'll turn it over to John.

WA3-KFT.

KC3-O-O-K.

KC3-O-O-K.

WA3-KFT.

Okay, Bill.

Well, I can't remember when I stopped trick-or-treating because I lived at home through high school and five years of college.

And Barge and I were married for 59 years.

You're asking me for something that I did 59 years ago.

And then some.

But I do remember going door-to-door.

Some of the houses had porch lights.

Some of them didn't.

Sometimes you didn't get candy.

You'd get apples.

Or oranges.

And like I said, sometimes cookies.

That one particular elderly lady.

If you had patience and stayed at the front door, you wound up with cookies.

But the street I lived on, Fairview Avenue, was so long that we never made it end-to-end trick-or-treating.

I always went from our house north.

And that was the older homes and development and so forth.

There was an apartment house.

And that was kind of neat.

Because that had ten apartments in it.

There were two in the basement.

The first floor had four.

And the second floor had four.

So, man, you got into the building.

And, yeah, one door after another.

You went to ten families in one fell swoop.

And you always got a loot out of something like that.

But everything else on the street was all single homes.

Way on the north side of town, there were some apartment buildings.

But this town was single houses.

Ninety-nine percent single houses.

Today, there are apartment buildings.

But I am talking more than 60 years ago.

But, uh, and when Mom and Dad bought the house, it was a dead-end street.

And we watched them put it through.

And that part, I never went up to those houses trick-or-treating.

I always went the other way.

I went north instead of south where there were newer homes and so on.

But, uh, there were some families with kids and so forth.

But, uh, I'll say older adults.

He's done, Mike.

We had...

We filled up the bag all right.

Most of the time, it was a pillowcase that we used.

So, it would handle something small or something large.

It didn't matter.

And then when we got home, we kind of spread it out on the floor to see what prizes we got.

So...

And, uh, I went trick-or-treating with my brothers and sisters.

I have two brothers and two sisters all younger than I.

So, we had an entourage when we would go trick-or-treating.

So...

Around here, uh, all the kids have grown up.

Uh...

There is a family up the street about four doors that has a youngster.

But, uh, everybody else has all grown up.

So, I don't know if we're going to have any trick-or-treaters around here.

AF3Z.

WA3KFT.

All right.

Thank you, John.

AF3Z here.

Yeah, I don't have too much more on Halloween.

I do remember the one year I was not a very, uh, uh, rebellious or creative or, uh, looking for a word here, uh, vandalist young man.

But we did have cornfields nearby, and we shucks, you know, got some of the corn kernels off.

And when you're hiding at the bushes, we lived on a dead-end dirt road, uh, off of Swedesford Road.

But nobody ever came down the road to us.

It was so dark and no light, you know, no streetlights.

Dead-end dirt road with an old railroad bridge across it.

So, anyway, we went up to the end of the lane and, uh, hid in the bushes and were tossing some corn out.

As cars drove by.

That was my big rebellious youth.

Uh, so, anyway, that's my only other memory here.

Uh, and on your thing, I'm not sure how it works out,

but the voice box, but it can also, the voice box can also hold a lot of garbage as well as gold and whatever, these treasures.

But I did think of the voice box, so that's a little bit creative anyway.

So, back to you there, Mike.

W3MFB, AF3Z.

W3MFB?

That's an interesting take on it, Jim.

There you go.

Didn't think of that.

But, yes, uh, Ron and Chuck got it correct.

It's an egg.

Uh, it's from the Hobbit, J.R.R.

Tolkien, Bilbo, Baggins, and Gollum, underneath the, uh, Misty Mountains in the Hobbit novel.

And they played Riddles in the Dark.

And that was one of the riddles.

It was the shorter one.

I figured we could write that one down easy if we were trying to guess.

So, an egg it was.

But, uh, yeah, not too much else going on here.

I don't know how I'm still awake.

I woke up at four this morning, and for some that might be normal, but me, not so much.

At two o'clock, my eyes started burning, and, uh, but right now I'm all right.

So, I guess we're nearing the nine o'clock hour, and I usually get a second wind at this point.

And that's why it's sometimes hard to fall asleep.

But, uh, yeah, that's about it here.

Um, hmm.

Well, I don't want to close it out right yet, but we'll see if there's anybody around.

Maybe somebody woke up out of their chair.

Who knows?

Uh, this is the Thursday night raintable.

The Thursday night roundtable on W3GMS repeater, 146-985.

Uh, just seeing if there are any other people listening that might want to check in, make the list.

Uh, please call RF Digital, W3MFB.

Okay, well, nothing I heard.

That was a short one, but it was a fun one.

And thank you, everybody, for all your stories.

And, uh, good to hear about the tower.

I did see the picture, and I, uh, Chuck and, and, uh, Bill, I, and I did ask Jim, because I saw the picture, I guess, uh, in the beginning of the week, or whatever that was sent out.

And I was, I saw Scott there, and, and helping out in CR.

So I wasn't sure if it was live, you know, up and running, because I hadn't heard otherwise.

And that's why I asked.

Because I know, uh, Joe had some instructions that he was talking about months ago.

Uh, in case we had the inner, inner bug, the inner modulation going on.

So I wasn't sure.

Um, so thanks, thanks for letting us know the progress of that.

Brilliant.

That concludes the Thursday Night Roundtable.

Uh, we're here every Thursday at 8 o'clock.

And don't forget the workbench on Monday nights at 8 o'clock as well.

And, uh, we hope to hear from everybody and maybe some more in the coming months, uh, in weeks.

I imagine when the, the weather gets colder, people will be indoors a little bit more.

Hopefully, and, uh, more people will check in.

So that concludes it.

We, uh, release the, uh, release you all.

You're all, you're all out of detention.

Have fun.

And, uh, we'll return the repeater back to regular amateur radio use.

This is W3MFB730.

Thank you, thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you.
