This podcast is designed to give English students extra practice by discussing events, history, culture and language.

Do you like to go to the market? How often do you go with your family? People can buy many things at the market, but they really like to buy fresh fruit and vegetables. Listen to three conversations at the market. You will hear a customer and a vendor.
A customer buys things at the market, and a vendor sells things. Vendors have a special table called a stall.
Listen and answer the questions.

Dialogue 1: Buying Fruit

Vendor: Welcome to my stall.
Customer: Hi! Is there an apple at your stall?
Vendor: Yes, I have apples. Here is a green apple, and over there is a red apple. 
Customer: Are there any bananas?
Vendor: Yes, there are lots of bananas. The bananas are over there on the left. 
Customer:  I see. I want these bananas, please.
Vendor: Here you are. That is 1 Euro.
Customer: 1 Euro for you. Thank you!

Comprehension Questions:
What fruit did the customer ask for first?
(Answer: An apple.)
Are there many bananas at the vendor’s stall?
(Answer: Yes, there are.)

Dialogue 2: Looking at Vegetables

Customer: Good morning! I need some vegetables.
Vendor: Good morning! There are a few vegetables here today. 
Customer: Are there any potatoes?
Vendor: No, there are not any potatoes today, but there are some beans. 
Customer: Okay, I will take a carrot and some beans.
Vendor: Great! Thank you!
Customer: Wait. I will take these carrots here, 3, and some beans.
Vendor: No problem. Here you go.

Comprehension Questions:
Which vegetables are there at the stall?
(Answer: There are carrots and beans.)
Are there any potatoes?
(Answer: No, there aren’t.)

Dialogue 3: A Quick Market Chat

Friend 1: Hello! What is there on the table?
Friend 2: Hello. There is some fruit, and there are some vegetables.
Friend 1: What kind of fruit is there?
Friend 2: There is a big watermelon and a pineapple. Oh, and there are some fresh peaches and kiwi.
Friend 1: Fresh peaches are the best! And what vegetables are there?
Friend 2: Here is a small pumpkin. There are many vegetables: broccoli, beets and onions, too.
Friend 1: But I don’t like any of those vegetables!

Comprehension Questions:
What fruit or vegetable on the table is small? 
(Answer: The pumpkin is small.)
What kinds of fruit are fresh? 
(Answer: The peaches and kiwi are fresh.)

What is your favorite fruit or vegetable at the market, Ari? I
really love mango and watermelon, Kari. What about you?
My favorite is pineapple.
Ooh, yum.

Your homework: The next time you are at the market or shop, practice talking about the fruit and vegetables you see. Try to use ‘there is’ and ‘there are.’
