📄 Description / Show Notes
As safety professionals, we’re wired to look out for everyone else’s well-being — but when was the last time you checked in on your own mental health?
In this introspective episode, Sheldon opens up about the importance of taking care of your emotional and psychological safety, especially in a high-stress, high-responsibility field like EHS.
🎧 He challenges you to ask:
What are you doing for your mental health right now?
How are you managing burnout, isolation, or overwork?
Do you treat mental health as a compliance issue — or a culture issue?
From self-awareness to intentional self-care, this episode is a needed pause — a mental PPE check for those who often carry the weight for others.

[SPEAKER_00]: Let's dive into the art of consulting with your safety shirt for himself, Sheldon primus.
[SPEAKER_01]: This episode is powered by Safety FM.
[SPEAKER_02]: All right, welcome to another episode of the Safety Consultant Palakast.
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm your host children primus.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's the podcast where I teach you the business of being a safety consultant.
[SPEAKER_02]: We talk about OSHA compliance sometimes.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's sometimes talk about general safety and health.
[SPEAKER_02]: A bunch of times we've got really good interviews and I give you guys a introduction to other people and friends I know.
[SPEAKER_02]: And if we just chat like this week, I didn't do an introduction today, like I have been starting off the year, my introductions are just kind of like let me know what's happening and all that stuff.
[SPEAKER_02]: Today actually I'm not going to do that because we're going to have a short episode.
[SPEAKER_02]: The episode that I'm gonna do is honestly something I've been thinking about for a while and it's something that I personally I suffer with and that's me not taking care of myself
[SPEAKER_02]: So, I want to do a short episode of just letting you guys know he got to take care of yourself to it's important.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's important for many reasons.
[SPEAKER_02]: You want to make sure that you're a sharpest and that you're able to truly have the faculties that you need and you're not trying to work
[SPEAKER_02]: talking to clients in your catcher desperate voice-on though I know some of us would see out this is our life so we need to to make some money right now but this episode is just a reminder.
[SPEAKER_02]: Do something that's fun for you.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay do something that is going to help you out.
[SPEAKER_02]: Do something that is going to enrich you that's going to help fill your cup so that it overflows and whatever pours onto the saucer is what you give to those clients, give to those people, give back to your community.
[SPEAKER_02]: I look at that analogy and I didn't make that one up.
[SPEAKER_02]: That's been around for a long time.
[SPEAKER_02]: So again, you kind of fill yourself up first.
[SPEAKER_02]: And you got to figure out what that is.
[SPEAKER_02]: For me, honestly, into nature, I'm a nature guy.
[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm in the Pacific Northwest of the US.
[SPEAKER_02]: We got nature all around us.
[SPEAKER_02]: And specifically, I'm in Washington State.
[SPEAKER_02]: I love it here.
[SPEAKER_02]: We're just kind of moving from Florida up here...ish.
[SPEAKER_02]: That's it now there's story.
[SPEAKER_02]: I'll find it anyway.
[SPEAKER_02]: Just being at nature has been really cool.
[SPEAKER_02]: Helps me get grounded.
[SPEAKER_02]: I meditate.
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm a meditating guy.
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't worry about trying to get your mind where you get it nice and quiet and you're like
[SPEAKER_02]: You let the thoughts come and let them go kind of like washing over you like a shower when you get water flowing over you You're not thinking about every drop hitting you right you're just taking your bath Same thing with with meditation right so you're gonna just let those thoughts come in and out You know have to dwell on any thought and Sometimes I literally say okay I'm gonna make a note to do that later, but honestly, I don't really dwell on it much just
[SPEAKER_02]: I'll focus on your breath, that's the biggest thing, breathe in, breathe out.
[SPEAKER_02]: So there's a monk who's passed a thick non-Hon, who would say,
[SPEAKER_02]: how and I'm breathing out and that's your mantra as you're breathing in and you're breathing out so that that's the only thing you're thinking about.
[SPEAKER_02]: Deepak Chopra, he has some meditation guidelines and now one has meditation guidelines.
[SPEAKER_02]: He was in his breath and now as I'm thinking about it
[SPEAKER_02]: So, that's the sound of the universe, if you would, so so, and what you're doing there is you're just getting your mind set, whenever this thought's coming through, I'm gonna thinking about the thoughts, and it's okay, he could set a timer for when you need to get done.
[SPEAKER_02]: I suggest get yourself an an ice-countable position, or I'm not gonna be squirming.
[SPEAKER_02]: And just don't really let the thoughts engage, let it just run the past, so meditation, that's another one.
[SPEAKER_02]: Now the thing that I do is, there's a guy out there called Hal Elrod, and he calls his system for high achievers called SAV-E-R-S.
[SPEAKER_02]: Savers is silenced.
[SPEAKER_02]: As the S, the A is an affirmation of V is a visualizing your day, and he is exercise.
[SPEAKER_02]: R is reading, and then the S is going to be, uh, to describe the, just like great stuff down.
[SPEAKER_02]: Um, so that's the savers method I do that as well, and uh, just basically help me kind of formulate what life is gonna be like today.
[SPEAKER_02]: What stuff can I look like and it's giving myself a little bit of time?
[SPEAKER_02]: Grab your coffee, grab your tea, hang out in your porch, if you got a porch, I'm a RV or so.
[SPEAKER_02]: We don't have porch in the hallway.
[SPEAKER_02]: Actually, there's a bunch of RVs out there that have porch, but where we can't, I love going out and doing the walks and all that stuff and hanging outside and watching nature, as I said, on the mattress.
[SPEAKER_02]: think there's an actual meaning to nature.
[SPEAKER_02]: I like nature.
[SPEAKER_02]: Let's say it that way.
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, naturalist, that's the other meaning.
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not that.
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm a person who likes nature.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but anyway, I like to take care of it.
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, as a note, some of you may remember this music.
[SPEAKER_02]: If you're old time listeners have been doing this for five years, I
[SPEAKER_02]: This is just to be my background music for all my interviews and all of my actual episodes so you can go down on like episode one to maybe episode 50 or something and be able to hear this music in the background Interviews and everything else so this is a little homage to old me some of you that mistake around for
[SPEAKER_02]: five years getting into six years coming up in the spring I'll be beginning my six-year-up podcasting uh thank you guys for hanging out with me but again don't want to go too far away from topic uh topic today is you take care of yourself do something that's going to help you do something that reaches you do something that's going to fill your cup
[SPEAKER_02]: And then you'll be able to see clearly to help your clients, you'll be able to live your life and not just be a doer.
[SPEAKER_02]: You want to be a human being, be something.
[SPEAKER_02]: So.
[SPEAKER_02]: I've got a bunch of episodes in the past that you could listen to regarding self-help, self-care.
[SPEAKER_02]: So if you want to go ahead and do some archived searches, you could find my episodes.
[SPEAKER_02]: I'll see you if you guys, Dr. Baffa, who has an app out there for breathing.
[SPEAKER_02]: I'll look back to that one.
[SPEAKER_02]: I've got a couple episodes of myself obviously.
[SPEAKER_02]: A Jewels.
[SPEAKER_02]: You can get a Jewels to the Fritz episode.
[SPEAKER_02]: You can hear her story.
[SPEAKER_02]: There's a bunch of my wife.
[SPEAKER_02]: I've got an episode of my wife and a curator like twice.
[SPEAKER_02]: Talk to me on ourselves.
[SPEAKER_02]: I've got an episode with Dr. Jay Allen.
[SPEAKER_02]: Jay's one of the people that we talked about recently with mental health and suicide.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's another side of this too, if you get out of balance of life, then you can lead to those type of thoughts and actions, so just help yourself to be the best you can be.
[SPEAKER_02]: And that's honestly by giving yourself time to just unwind time for you to nourish yourself.
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, that's the episode for today.
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm thinking about you.
[SPEAKER_02]: So with that in mind,
