The 405 Coffee Break with O.K. Solberg

Much like everyone else in America, Malta MT has seen its share of changes. O.K. also reminds us of some of the things here that haven't changed.

What is The 405 Coffee Break with O.K. Solberg?

Greetings 405 listener!

The 405 airs over KMMR Radio Station. At 5 Minutes past 4 PM. Normally each M-F week day of the year. Here on the website we'll get it posted for you within a few hours, normally.

Your neighbor and website maintainer,
D.J. Rasmussen

P.S. Oct 8th, 2025 Update. Finally back and published the Oct 3, 6th & 7th episodes, today on the 8th. We've had a recording equipment failure, hopefully fixed by tomorrow or very soon. Until then, I'm picking up the KMMR master recording copy and publishing that the day after The 405 airs or as soon as possible. Thanks for stopping by and listening.

OK Solberg:

I wanna again welcome you to The 405 Coffee Break, guys. Friday, weekend's coming. Get your cup of coffee, glass of ice, bottle of water. Let's see what's happening out there. Spring wheat $5.17 a bushel.

OK Solberg:

550lb steer calf $4.40 a pound. I kid you not. Butcher hog in Iowa, 61ยข a pound, and a lamb that's fat in Billings weighing a 100 pounds will fetch you $2 and a penny. $2.01/lb, but guys, there's more, much more. So what's it gonna be today?

OK Solberg:

Any ideas? What if you had to come up with a five minute segment each day? What would you write about? I like an old saying that Paul Harvey used to use from time to time. It went just like this, the more things change, the more things stay the same.

OK Solberg:

You might think, what has stayed the same? Well, well, did you realize that the railroad came through a siding called Siding 54 back in 1887, and that same railroad track is still active in our little Siding 54 now called Malta, Montana even now in 2025. Did you realize that more recently, yet still fifty years ago, fifty two years ago to be exact, I was required to take a typing class in Malta High School, and the teacher was miss Higgins. And she started us out on the typewriter with f f f space, f f f space. And as I'm preparing this episode, I am using those same skills learned fifty two years ago to type out this episode on my keyboard.

OK Solberg:

Now listen once again. The more things change, the more things stay the same. That actually makes some good sense. But, oh, man, the changes we've seen. Do you remember the pay telephone booths and the pay telephones?

OK Solberg:

How about VHS tapes? Remember VHS tapes when they became popular? And we had Tom Didi's first video store in Malta, Montana, right there in the corner of the Pit Crew on Central Avenue. Try and buy a VHS tape today. Oh, you can find them, but they're not everywhere.

OK Solberg:

Not to mention eight tracks and cassettes. We have seen things constantly change. But here's a change that isn't as evident to us here in Malta, Montana, but it has changed. Oh, how it has changed. When I was going to school and beyond, we had a segment in our local Phillips County news titled justice and traffic court.

OK Solberg:

You old guys remember. If you got caught by law enforcement, your name showed up in the paper. I'm looking at a clip from January 1980, 01/03/1980 edition of the PCN. It has this list. Oh, it has this long list of names of people who got caught and had to pay a fine.

OK Solberg:

In this 1980 edition under justice and traffic court, I count a 122 different infractions listed for a one month period of time. A 122 different infractions and the names of the guilty parties right there in the paper for all the world to see. And to add to that, at the end of the listing it reads, 206 daytime speeding tickets were issued during the above period of time. Did you hear that? A 122 different infractions, like driving without current registration or night speeding or stop sign violation or even following too closely to a law enforcement vehicle, totaling 122 different infractions within a month period of time, plus 206 daytime speeding tickets.

OK Solberg:

Wow. Us kids knew back then the worst thing about getting a ticket wasn't the fine you had to pay, it was for everyone to see your name in the paper. Well, fast forward to the current PCN. This week, Malta, Montana, Phillips County News dated 10/01/2025. Now we have the Phillips County Sheriff's Report, and it comes out in every new paper.

OK Solberg:

And we have things like female reported a snake in her garage at Malta Duplex. ACO handled the call. Or here's a favorite of mine. Deputy performed a welfare check on a vehicle parked along Highway 2 East Of Malta. All found to be okay.

OK Solberg:

Just an out of state person wanting a better look at the stars. Guys, that's just beautiful. I don't care what you say. I too love to get away from the streetlights and enjoy God's handiwork. So, guys, there's a change that happened right before our eyes, and we might not even have noticed it.

OK Solberg:

The PCN going from justice and traffic court to the now current Phillips County Sheriff's report. I'm gonna do some checking and see if I can find out when that change took place. It was still clicking off in 1980 from a stop sign violation to a person out enjoying the starry sky. Listen to our bible passage for today. O lord, our lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth.

OK Solberg:

You have set your glory above the heavens. Out of the mouth of babes and infants, you have established strength because of your foes to still the enemy and the avenger. When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and stars which you have set in place. What is man that you are mindful of him and the son of man that you care for him? Psalm 8 verses 1-4

OK Solberg:

Look at the heavens, the work of his fingers, the moon and stars. You can view them tonight, and don't forget the football game tomorrow, 01:00. Go blue. So until next time. As you go out there, remember now. Don't be bitter.
