A weekday morning devotional series written by Aaron Marcarelli and hosted by Chad McBeam
“But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not just hearers who deceive themselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. But one who has looked intently at the perfect law, the law of freedom, and has continued in it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an active doer, this person will be blessed in what he does.”
James 1:22-25 NASB2020
We all know or at least we should know, that we are not saved by our deeds. We are saved by our faith in Christ, that he came to earth, was born to Mary and Joseph, had a ministry, preached from the scriptures of old, was arrested, beaten and died by being crucified which was the atonement for our sin. He then rose again to conquer death once and for all, giving us eternal life with the Father. He then appears to the disciples multiple times and then He ascended into heaven. He will come again to establish His eternal kingdom. If we believe then we are saved.
As my Head of School, Dr. Rob Brown, so eloquently reminded us as a staff yesterday. He said, But God, wants so much more from us than just belief. James writes “You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.”
James 2:19
Dr Brown continued we are called to so much more. We are called to draw our students to the love of Christ by our ministry as true followers of Christ. Yes we are! Thank you Dr. Brown for that reminder.
We are called to be followers of Christ. We are called towards love and good deeds. We have been given all authority through the power of the Holy Spirit to go and preach the good news. We are called to the great commission, making disciples in all the earth. “And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to follow all that I commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:18-20 NASB2020
This is why Christ came, not for parties, presents, sharing cakes, cookies, pies and food. Not that those things are bad. But God, He came to earth in the form of Jesus of Nazareth born in a stable, as fully human, for one reason and one reason only, that reason was to seek and save the lost for all time. Our calling is to point people towards the reason we celebrate Christ’s life, and that is His perfect saving grace upon the cross and his victory over death through his resurrection.
Lord help us to be followers of you and your word, and not just believers. Help us to spend time in your word, spend time in prayer and spend time just being quiet with you. We know that you will give us that time back exponentially. Help us to give you our first fruits of time so that we can not only be hearers of your word but doers as well. We ask these things in your precious name Amen…
