The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

Danno had business on the moon. Or...maybe he sprained his wrist watching male figure skating at The Olympics? Anyway, a close call with COVID over the weekend saw Danno quarantine on Monday, so Arlo Maddest stepped in to cover all the new tunes.

Show Notes

As broadcast February 9, 2022.  Tonight we saw Gwangju's voice of the news cover the music, as Danno was attending to business on the moon, or attending to a sprained wrist from watching male figure skating at The Olympics, or quarantining due to COVID close contact...or something.  Thus, tonight it's New Muses Monday with Gwangju's News Voice Arlo Maddest as he so graciously and gracefully stepped in to rock the show for us.

It is 20 hours past midnight and it is as always time for The Drop to go into full effect, and it is our . Whew…we made it. And this Monday’s opening salvo of the year of the tiger is roared and bellowed into posterity as January 3, 2022. This is Arlo doing the thing for Danno tonight as he’s out for tonight, broadcasting from studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? It is our popcast Monday night and we are ready to roll with all the new music. So, I’ll be holding down the show for the full two hours this evening, but we’ll still be going through all the new tunes just out for the full two hours this evening. For right now though, it’s time to go through our history to begin the show for our TIGHT (or Today In Great and Heavy Tunes) feature. And tonight, it’s Neil Young taking a stand against what he terms misinformation being spread via the Joe Rogan podcast, and we’ll talk about all of this after we let him blaze a path musically. THIS is The Drop.
Neil Young – The Loner
The Drop has once again fired up the mic and a new week begins with all the new music we can fit into two hours. How’s it going Drop Family? _____ here, filling in for Danno who’s out for the day, but nothing to worry about really, so no stress.
It is our New Muses Monday first hour tonight, and as we usually do Danno or no, that was our TIGHT (or Today In Great & Heavy Tunes) feature to start the show with a bit of history. It’s our first show in the last couple of weeks due to the Lunar New Year holiday, and of course Neil Young has been the big news these past couple of weeks in the music world.
And that is because Young has quit let’s say The Spot with the all the music and withdrawn all his music from the platform. This was done in protest of what the artist perceives as pervasive misinformation on COVID 19 that has been presented on The Joe Rogan Podcast, which is presented exclusively on The aforementioned Spot with all the music.
The platform refused to break ties with Rogan and his podcast over this, so Neil Young withdrew all of his catalogue from the player. This started a bit of a wave, with Joni Mitchell also taking her music off the platform shortly after, followed by quite a few lesser artists and India Arie.
Where this has really hurt The Spot is all the customers who cancelled subscriptions, as there was such a deluge of cancellations that the company ended live customer service calls. Further than that, since it is a publicly traded company, the news of Young’s withdrawl commenced a selloff on Wall Street, with the company losing over $2 billion in value in a single day.
Interesting to see what happens from here, but it seems like The Spot is staying the course.
So, with that out of the way, let’s begin the new tunes for tonight. Up next we have Joesef ready to swing to be followed by Alfie Templeman and Goth Babe. We’ll be sure to discuss all of this after the tunes float around, but for right now, THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday.
______
Back on The Drop and into the final airbreak for part 1 this evening. For those curious as to the voice you’re hearing this is Arlo, filling in for the full two hours tonight as Danno is out for the day, but nothing to worry about there. Let’s discuss what we just played in that last block…
Joesef – It’s Been A Little Heavy Lately* (…this is the latest single, just a standalone from the Glasgow-born rising star. The glimmering single talks about a type of moment we have all been through, when one lets their standards slip due to stress or difficult situations. If you haven’t checked out his last single Fire, do check if you like what you heard there.)
Alfie Templeman – Broken (…the rising teenage sensation out of the UK has announced his debut album Mellow Moon with this release, which he says stylistically is inspired by Radiohead and Nile Rogers. Mellow Moon will come out in late May via AWAL, the same imprint Joesef calls home.)
Goth Babe – Running Around (…our favorite audio nomad true name Griff Washburn is out with this, his latest single. Rather than touring land in a van with his beloved dog, the video sees the two of them sailing around and island hopping, which was done in celebration of his 25th birthday, done like the music itself DIY.)
Okay, so we still have a couple of tunes left to finish off part 1 tonight, and we’re going to get a little soft. Up next is Mitski’s latest called Stay Soft, which is from her album that just dropped Friday called Laurel Hell, so that’s definitely the big album drop from this past weekend. After that to finish we have the latest from Arlo Parks called (what else) “Softly,” and that is going to do it for the first quarter tonight, Drop Gangsters. THIS is The Drop with Arlo on your New Muses Monday night.
Mitski – Stay Soft
Arlo Parks - Softly
___
The Drop returns and we have officially buzzed in for our slow burn 2nd stanza tonight. Arlo here, keeping things on the level for the full two hours as Danno is out for hopefully just tonight, coming at you with all the new tunes in tow for the week from studio 2, GFN HQ. So, let’s summarize what we just heard to start things here in part 2…
ginla feat Adrianne Lenker – Carousel (…for those unfamiliar, ginla is a duo made up of Jon Nellen and Joe Manzoli, who operate out of New York City and Toronto respectively. They’ve been putting out music for almost a decade now, and today they’re announcing a new album called Everything, out March 25, and this is the lead single featuring Big Thief’s leading lady Adrianne Lenker. Big Thief is also out with a new album themselves this Friday, which is called Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You.)
SASAMI – Call Me Home (…this is the fourth single from Sasami Ashworth’s new album dropping in a few weeks’ time called Squeeze. We’ve already heard album cuts “The Greatest,” “Skin A Rat,” and “Say It,” and this tune deals is “dedicated to anyone who has blown up their life just to remember what it’s like to feel something,” the artist stated, with an accompanying ress release calling it “Sheryl Crow-inspired.”.)
So, moving forward we have another trio of fresh cuts to taste test, with Luna Li and beabadoobee on deck to be followed by LAUNDRY DAY and Ging. We’ll talk about all of this after we toss them into the air, but for now THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.
____
The Drop is back tonight as we go into the final airbreak of the first hour this evening. Arlo here, filling in for Danno who’s not here physically but here in spirit as he’s chosen all the tunes, and I’m holding it down on the mic solo until 10pm tonight. Let’s get to that last triad of tunes we just let into space for now before we shut the front door, though…
Luna Li feat beabadoobee – Silver Into Rain (…a great collaboration here between two rising female Asian artists, Luna Li being of Korean-Canadian descent and beabadoobee being Philipino and based in London. This was a tune that was actually released solo in 2018, but has been redone. The song also announced the release of the NME 100 artist’s debut album Duality, which comes out on March 4.)
LAUNDRY DAY – The Knots (…this is the fourth and final single to be released prior to the band’s latest album dropping this Friday. The Manhattan-based band here sings mostly of the emotional inner danger of “tying oneself up in knots,” which will bring you down if you do not release them.)
Ging – Can You See Me (…this is a name that might not be known to you, but is certainly a huge name under another moniker in Frank Dukes. If that still doesn’t ring a bell, Frank Dukes in the past has been the producer for Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, Drake, and Lorde. You know, small-time names (haha).)
Okay, so as head to halftime right now, we have one more long player to let fly off into space and dance around. Up next is the latest from Norse dance music legends Royksopp featuring Alison Goldfrapp. This latest tune is called Impossible and is the 2nd tune released to the Profound Mysteries project, which drops on April 29 in full and will be the group’s first original LP since 2014’s The Inevitable End, which apparently, it was not. This is The Drop with Arlo on your New Muses Monday and that is halftime.
Royksopp feat Alison Goldfrapp – Impossible

Part III

Hot-Take (Gossip, Rumors, Drama, Beef)

Rihanna - Desperado
Surprise surprise, Rihanna has been busy not only with her beauty and fashion business on the rise, but as well as introducing new life! Rihanna is pregnant with rapper, A$AP Rocky. They've announced it casually on social media, and everyone is head over heels.

Blood Orange - You're Not Good Enough
The To All the Boys I've Loved Before actor posted a sweet photo to announce her engagement to longtime boyfriend Anthony De La Torre. Seems like she has to make her love letters into invitations instead.

Fresh Buns

Franz Ferdinand - Curious
01.25.22
“Curious” is the second single taken from Franz Ferdinand’s greatest hits collection Hits to the Head. It’s the first song Audrey Tait played with the band as their new drummer, after the departure of founding member Paul Thomson

Wallows - Especially You
02.03.22
“Especially You” is the second single by LA-based indie rock band Wallows off their highly anticipated sophomore album Tell Me That It’s Over.

BENEE - Beach Boy
02.03.22
As the first track of her upcoming EP, Lychee, “Beach Boy” is a song about pure fantasy. Set in LA, It’s about being happy alone, but still wanting some love; wanting the thrill without the pain.

Mø - New Moon
Danish superstar Mo released her latest album on January 28. The artist says of this latest single, “New Moon” is a song made to manifest a new era. A song about regaining control. To me, it is a reminder to listen to myself. Trust my instincts and not let external forces blur my vision and get me stuck in a spiral. I hope other people get the same energy from it.”
Tate McRae – she’s all I wanna be

Part IV

Lauv - 26
01.28.22
“26” is a semi-autobiographical recount on Lauv’s life and career progression. He sheds light on the “hole in his heart” that he was left with even after writing songs that got big and getting rich, and his struggles with the thought of getting old.

Keshi - Touch
02.04.22
“TOUCH” is the first song to be previewed for keshi’s upcoming debut studio album, GABRIEL In the song, he details an intimate relationship that feels forbidden, but lust keeps him coming back for more.

Charli XCX ft. Tina Sawayama - Beg For You
01.27.22
“Beg For You” is the third single from Charli XCX’s upcoming album CRASH. It features Japanese-British singer-songwriter Rina Sawayama. Apparently, this is not the first time they have worked together, as they did a song that ended up being scrapped before.

Tove Lo - How Long

Known for her songs about breakups and heartbreak, and drug and sex references, Tove Lo is a perfect fit for a show like "Euphoria". In the song, the narrator discovers that their partner has been cheating on them; “How Long” is about love, betrayal and denial. Terrible.
