The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

As broadcast October 24, 2023 with plenty of world for your premiere.  Tonight we were very proud to give an early spin to Tessa Devine's new single "Dancing In The Rain," which is out on Thursday.  We got to know Tessa while she was here as a contestant at the Busking World Cup, where she deservedly won the People's Choice Award in the finals.  An infectiously gregarious character, you can check our exclusive interview with Tessa here if you want to understand more about what makes this on-the-rise artist tick and have a laugh, as she is just a joy to talk to and a very talented artist to boot.  Great new tunes out this week to check out for the remainder, with Helado Negro, ivri, our friends Mecanico down in Chile, and a host of other immensely talented artists got to do a little sky dance on this night.

Part 1
Vacations – Close Quarters
- Starting off with the big platinum guns this evening, and down in Australia for our opening tune tonight.
- This single is a teaser from the band’s upcoming album No Place Like Home, which is due out Jan 12.
- The upcoming record follows an intense period of transformation for the lead singer Campbell Burns, who was diagnosed with Pure OCD (or “Pure O”), a subtype of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder marked by intrusive, unwanted, and uncontrollable thoughts. His experiences learning to live with this while touring the world informed the record, which also engages in nuanced discussions around personal growth and sexuality.
MICHELLE – Glow
- Despite the singular name, this is a New York collective with a rising profile, and they have returned with news of a forthcoming new EP, ‘GLOW’ (to be released via Transgressive Records), of which this is of course the title track.
- It follows 2022’s ‘AFTER DINNER WE TALK DREAMS’, as well as support slots touring with Mitski, Arlo Parks, and Gus Dapperton in the meantime. Although announced, it would seem the EP doesn’t yet have an official release date. You can also check out the other single on the new 7” called AGNOSTIC, if you wanna get a double dip.
Helado Negro – LFO (Lupe Finds Oliveros)
- Interesting new tune and a big announcement here, as this hazy psyche track from mastermind Roberto Carlos Lange is from the project’s upcoming album Phasor.
- This tune specifically links two women who in the song represent sonic greatness, per the Pitchfork writeup. Phasor is due out Feb 9 via 4AD.
Infinity Song – Metamorphosis
- This is a band that appears courtesy of Jay-Z’s Roc Nation and is actually a sibling quartet.
- Huge social media stars, they had a viral hit with a tune called Hater’s Anthem previously, and the rise continues for the soft rock band, as this is the title track to a new LP which actually dropped in full just yesterday.
Mustafa – Name of God
- Back in 2021, this artist garnered a Polaris Prize nomination for When Smoke Rises.
- Now, we have a new single produced by Aaron Dessner from the Toronto artist, who in the song deals with his own relationship to Islam, and the death of his brother, who passed over the summer.
Mk.gee feat Two Star – Are You Looking Up
- This is part of a new 7” single that features both this track, “Are You Looking Up” and “You got it.”
- The 7” arrives on the heels of sold-out shows for both artists at Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg and Toronto’s Great Hall last week, kicking off Mk.gee’s run of North American live dates with bandmates Dijon and Andrew Aged.
Hans Williams – Georgia Walks
- And finally tonight, a rising star in New Orleans who’s originally out of Vermont to close part 1.
- Williams had garnered attention with previous single Golden Hour, and this slow starter really pays off with the arrangement and the artist’s semi-falsetto delivery.

Part 2
Tessa Devine – Dancing In The Rain
- The big event for tonight’s show right here, the incredible Tessa Devine who just sent this tune to us this afternoon, and that would be a world premiere here on the show.
- The tune is not out for a couple more days, so you’ll have to wait a bit longer to hear it on the streaming platforms, and you can see with this latest tune why Tessa Devine was the people’s choice at this year’s Busking World Cup.
Searows – Funny
- This is the project of Kentucky-born, Oregon-raised artist Alec Duckert, and Funny would be Searows’ latest single.
- After releasing the Guard Dog LP last year, UK-based artist Matt Maltese was struck by the record, and began championing Searows’ work.
Holly Macve & Lana Del Rey – Suburban House
- For those unfamiliar, Holly Macve was born in Ireland and raised in Yorkshire, and amazingly was able to forge a friendship via social media with Lana Del Rey.
- The song is part of a new project from Macve due early next year, but we’ll have to await further details on that.
ivri - limbo
- This is an artist we’ve been very excited about for some time now, and we know we are not alone in that regard.
- Last Thursday saw the star factory LP drop from ivri, who’s become a star via social media and this album is not to be missed, with the artist amassing 2.6M streams a month on the spot alone.
Mini Trees – Push & Pull
- Always good to see the LA-based Lexi Vega back with new music and this one certainly doesn’t disappoint.
- One listener noted of the song that Vega has been growing on them a lot lately, and we must concur, this only solidifying that opinion.
FIGHTMASTER – Violence
- And we’ll stay in LA for our final tune with nonbinary artist ER Fightmaster, who just released their five song EP as of Friday, of which this would be the title track.
- Great tune here to end off the first half this evening, and kudos to producer Riley Geare on this joint for good measure.

Part 3
jake minch – whose you are
- This is an artist out of the UK that describes themselves as a bit of an anxious busy body who appears courtesy of the good people at Republic Records.
- The single we just started part 3 with is part of a new album for minch that just dropped on Friday called how many, available everywhere now.
Sparky Deathcap – Winter City Ghosts
- This is a new single that just dropped last Thursday from the artist, garnering good attention since it dropped as well.
- The project is the brainchild of Los Campesinos multi-instrumentalist and illustrator RN Taylor.
Mecanico feat Rayos Laser – Pentallas y Desiertos
- Our good friends from way south in Chile are back with this collab tune as of last week, featuring Rayos Laser.
- The song would be the band’s 2nd release in the lead-up to their new album still publicly unnamed which is out Nov 30, with the lead single being a joint done with Delfina Campos with Nico Parra & Nacho Ramírez from the band.
Pearly Drops – Take Me Down (Nourished by Time vers.)
- One of our favorite on-the-rise bands out of Helsinki right here in Pearly Drops, and they are out with a new remixes EP later this year called Haunted Expansion Pack, due out later this year.
- The remixes EP is reimaginings of the band’s highly successful A Little Disaster LP, dropped earlier in the year.
Video Age – Is It Really Over?
- This tune is from the artist’s upcoming Away From The Castle LP, which is set to drop this Friday.
- The project is the brainchild of New Orleans-based veteran musicians Ross Farbe and Ray Macarelli, who’d been playing with other projects around town prior to forming a band together.
M83 – Mirror
- The dance music veterans had a bit of a surprise over the past week for their dedicated long-time fans, as this song was a hidden track on their Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming LP from over a decade ago.
- What made the hidden track different from others was that the song was only on a separate disk literally hidden in the packaging of the CD, so not everyone found it.

Part 4
Allegra Krieger – Impasse
- In July, Allegra Krieger released her fourth album I Keep My Feet On The Fragile Plane, a collection of tranquil, introspective songs like “Low” and “Lingering.”
- Last week, the artist announced Fragile Plane: B-Sides, an EP of songs written around the same time, and lo and behold, it’s already out as of Friday. Just like that, I say!
Barrie – Hard Candy
- This is a song that was originally featured in an episode of the Hulu/Freeform comedy series Single Drunk Female last year.
- Barrie noted in a social media post, “I’m putting it out now because I like this one and it doesn’t really belong on any other release.”
Dirt Buyer – Heaven
- This is a band based in New York that describe themselves as a three piece emo folk band.
- The tune up next is part of the Dirt Buyer II LP, which just dropped last Friday if you wanna take a deeper dive into some murkier waters tonight.
Malcolm Todd – Mr. Incorrect
- a song about moving on from a toxic or unhealthy relationship. The lyrics suggest a sense of liberation and newfound happiness after ending the relationship.
- The chorus emphasizes the protagonist's desire to move forward and Malcolm Todd had previously dropped a quite solid little record called Demos Before Dawn if you wanna float downstream a bit further.
Sir Was – Sometimes You Got To
- Our main man Joel Wastberg is back with this new joint as of last week, and we are always listening to what’s on offer.
- Always elegant and idiosyncratic, the artist’s work is always a reflection of graduation from Sweden’s top music school along with the influences that make the final product what it is. After a health scare the past couple of years, it is always great to see Wastberg out with some new tunes. Big up to our man in Gothenburg.
Jane Remover – Backseat Girl
- And finally tonight, a very interesting long player that we’re going to have to let breathe with a good amount of real estate to end the show.
- This song features on a new album that just dropped Friday called Census Designated, and the artist has gone by a wealth of monikers over the years, most famously as Leroy with an album called Dariacore, which was a pioneering microgenre release.
- Under Jane Remover, we also have a very good record called Frailty from a year or two ago, so lots to get familiar with if you dig the final jarring soundscape tonight.
