You Can Mentor: A Christian Youth Mentoring Podcast

“IPC”

-IPC is a tool to help us understand our mentee (and ourselves)

-Identity, Purpose, and Community are three things we are presented with about King David in 2 Samuel 8.
-Identity: 2 Samuel tells us David was a mighty warrior and a shrewd leader.
-Purpose: Based on his being a warrior and leader, he was successful in battle and made smart leadership choices while subduing his enemy and growing his empire!
-Community: This chapter ends with a list of men David trusted to rule over aspects of his kingdom.

A quick summary: David is a fierce warrior (Identity). Therefore, he conquered the Philistines (Purpose). Joab was over David’s army (Community).

Identity is WHO WE ARE
Purpose is WHAT WE DO
Community is HOW WE BLESS AND ARE BLESSED BY OTHERS

As mentors, we know these are transferable. In 2 Samuel 9, David, having confidence in his own IPC is able to convey these qualities onto Jonathan’s son, Mephibosheth.
-Identity: David yells Mephibosheth!
-Purpose: David reinstates Mephib’s rule over Saul’s kingdom
-Community: David invites Mephib to eat at his family’s table daily

If this story from the OT is foreign, READ IT!

“Reading” a mentee’s IPC will help you understand if she has a clear understanding of who she is in Christ, if she is living out her call, and if she is surrounding herself with the people who will help her be successful in her journey!

Speaker 2:

mentor. Well, hello. You can mentor listener. This is John with your mentoring minute. Today, I wanna present to you the idea of the IPC.

Speaker 2:

So, the IPC is a tool that we use to help us understand our mentee and ourselves. The I stands for identity, the P stands for purpose. And the C stands for community. And these are three things that we are presented with when we consider King David in 2 Samuel, chapter 8. So, his identity from 2nd Samuel tells us that David was a mighty warrior and a shrewd leader.

Speaker 2:

The purpose that we see is based on his being a warrior and leader. He was successful in battle and made smart leadership choices while subduing his enemy and growing his empire. And finally, that chapter ends with his community. This chapter gives us a list of men that David trusted to rule over aspects of his kingdom. If you have not gone in to 2nd Samuel chapter 8 lately, I highly recommend that you that you do that.

Speaker 2:

2nd Samuel second Samuel chapter 8 into 9, is exactly where we find this IPC model. So a quick summary is that David is a fierce warrior, and that is his identity. That is who he is. Therefore, he conquered the Philistines, which shows us his purpose. And finally, as for example, Joab was over David's army, and that showed his community, the identity, purpose, and community, the IPC.

Speaker 2:

That is David's IPC. So identity, quickly put, is who we are. Purpose is what we do. And finally, it lands on community, and that is how we bless and are blessed by others. So as mentors, we know that these are transferable.

Speaker 2:

Right? In 2nd Samuel chapter 9, David, having confidence in his own IPC, is now able to convey these qualities onto Jonathan's son, Mephibosheth. Remember him? Say it again. Mephibosheth.

Speaker 2:

So we find in second Samuel chapter 9, the whole chapter begins with David yelling the name of Mephibosheth once he walks into the room, and so he is identifying who he is. David reinstates Mephibosheth's rule over Saul's kingdom next, and that speaks into Mephibosheth's purpose. And, finally, 3 times in the chapter, David invites Mephibosheth to eat at his family's table on a daily basis. And if that is not community, I do not know what it is. So, again, David knows his identity, his purpose, and community.

Speaker 2:

He is then able to be a asset to Mephibosheth by identifying him, by speaking into his purpose, and by welcoming him into his community. So if this story from the Old Testament is foreign to you, I highly recommend you read that. Reading a mentee's IPC will help you understand if she has a clear understanding of who she is in Christ, if she is living out her call, and if she is surrounding herself with the people who will help her be successful in her journey. Okay? So this is a huge thing to understand and to practice.

Speaker 2:

We love this IPC model because it gives us something to wrap our brains around and to think about, to consider, and then to apply as well. And that is your mentoring minute.
