[00:00:00] Dr. Taz: It's what you do most of the time that gives the body its benefit or its [00:00:05] detriment. Mm. It's what you do most of the time.
[00:00:07] Carol Alt: I was noticing at 36 years [00:00:10] old, my hair was starting to turn gray, I was starting to get wrinkles, I was losing my desire to [00:00:15] work and my energy level. My doctor, my holistic doctor, said it best.
[00:00:18] Carol Alt: He said, "Carol, you know, you're the [00:00:20] accumulation of everything you do to your body." That means everything that you put in and on your [00:00:25] body at some point shows on your face. Mm. This was a gift you were given. [00:00:30] Health is a gift.
[00:00:31] Dr. Taz: Ooh, that's a great way to think about this.
[00:00:33] Carol Alt: Right, and you need to take [00:00:35] care of that gift.
[00:00:35] Carol Alt: You give the body what it needs, and you can rebuild [00:00:40] yourself.
[00:00:40] Dr. Taz: There are so many food and diet trends out there right now, it's actually quite dizzying, even [00:00:45] for me. You hear about keto, vegan, gluten-free, paleo, anti-inflammatory. [00:00:50] Which one are we supposed to do? Now, while I've always talked about [00:00:55] personalizing diet recommendations to you, here's something that we are not talking very much [00:01:00] about nowadays.
[00:01:00] Dr. Taz: It's the raw food diet. And to help educate us and learn more, [00:01:05] I've brought on Carol Alt. That's right, you heard me correctly. Carol [00:01:10] Alt, the swimsuit Sports Illustrated magazine cover. She's graced so many [00:01:15] magazines over the years. She's a renowned supermodel, and she's been dubbed The [00:01:20] Face by the fashion industry.
[00:01:21] Dr. Taz: Since her days as the world's most renowned supermodel, [00:01:25] Carol has gone on to be a multi-award-winning actor, a successful [00:01:30] entrepreneur, a best-selling author on raw food and nutrition,
[00:01:33] Carol Alt: and the host of A [00:01:35] Healthy You and Carol Alt on the Fox News Channel. Please welcome [00:01:40] Carol to Whole Plus.
[00:01:41] Dr. Taz: All right. Carol Alt is on my show.
[00:01:43] Dr. Taz: So hard to believe. [00:01:45] I'm having a pinch me moment. I have watched and followed you for such a long time, and [00:01:50] have really admired you for multiple reasons. Not, of course, just because of the gorgeous beauty [00:01:55] that you are, but you've always sort of advocated and talked about holistic health [00:02:00] in different ways, right?
[00:02:01] Dr. Taz: Whether it was your diet or how you took care of yourself. I am so [00:02:05] curious. In today's landscape, where there's probably every procedure available to- ... [00:02:10] everybody at every age- I was wondering. It didn't take you long to
[00:02:12] Carol Alt: get
[00:02:12] Dr. Taz: into that, Dr. Taz ... at every single age. Even my [00:02:15] 17-year-old is like, "Do I need this?" And I'm like, "Please, stop."
[00:02:18] Dr. Taz: You know. What is your [00:02:20] definition of holistic beauty, and what would you tell women today?
[00:02:23] Carol Alt: You know, I, I try to [00:02:25] tell women today that your beauty starts at a young age. At their [00:02:30] 20s and 30s it's really important what you eat, how you nutrition your body, what you put on your skin, what you [00:02:35] wash your hair with.
[00:02:36] Carol Alt: Uh, you know, I actually ... My ho- my doctor, my holistic doctor, [00:02:40] said it best. He said, "Carol, you know, you're the accumulation of everything you do to your body." That means [00:02:45] everything that you put in and on your body at some point shows on your face. [00:02:50] Mm. And for me, that was in my 60s. You know? All of a sudden, your 60s, you [00:02:55] start going like, "Okay.
[00:02:56] Carol Alt: What do I need to adjust in order to tighten my skin [00:03:00] back up and give me back my energy?" And, and that's a big one with all my girlfriends, is [00:03:05] energy.
[00:03:05] Dr. Taz: Energy- Yeah ... is the big thing they complain about. But, you know, I just caught you on something. You said it took you [00:03:10] till 60- Mm-hmm ... to notice anything. Yeah.
[00:03:12] Dr. Taz: The majority of my patients and [00:03:15] women I meet today- 40s ... 40.
[00:03:16] Carol Alt: Yeah.
[00:03:16] Dr. Taz: So that's a 20-year sort of- Well,
[00:03:19] Carol Alt: I've been
[00:03:19] Dr. Taz: raw- ... [00:03:20] differential. I've been raw for- So you've been raw from- ...
[00:03:21] Carol Alt: 36 years.
[00:03:23] Dr. Taz: So I wanna talk about that. Yeah. We're gonna go [00:03:25] right there. So, you know, I've read that about you, I think, for years, about, uh, that, how you've been raw and you [00:03:30] chose to go raw.
[00:03:31] Dr. Taz: I wanna learn more about that. You know, that's sort of, when we look at Ayurveda or we [00:03:35] look at other systems of medicine, they have opinions on being raw, right? Yeah. So talk to us about [00:03:40] your choice to go raw, you know, how that evolved, and, you know, how [00:03:45] do you do it. That's another question, you know. Yeah.
[00:03:47] Dr. Taz: And we'll go from there.
[00:03:49] Carol Alt: Okay. Well, first [00:03:50] of all, you know, my decision to go raw wasn't just, uh, uh, I pulled [00:03:55] it out of the sky and said, "Oh, I feel I should do this." I studied, I [00:04:00] spoke with doctors, and I found what was right for me and for my body. I was [00:04:05] what we call a very acid system. Mm-hmm. I was very high-strung, A-type [00:04:10] personality, and, uh, or, or, you know, some people call it parasympathetic strong, some people call [00:04:15] it parasym- uh, c- you know, weak, but that's how they decide what they do and how they eat.
[00:04:19] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:04:19] Carol Alt: And [00:04:20] for me, I was, I was noticing at 36 years old, [00:04:25] my hair was starting to turn gray, I was starting to get wrinkles. I was losing my desire to [00:04:30] work and my energy level. And- You know, I [00:04:35] truthfully, this sounds so crazy, but it's part of holistic medicine, I went [00:04:40] more spiritual. I prayed on it.
[00:04:41] Dr. Taz: Hmm.
[00:04:42] Carol Alt: And one day out of the blue in [00:04:45] the middle of praying, I got a phone call from a friend of mine who said, "Oh, you need to speak with this doctor.
[00:04:49] Carol Alt: He's going [00:04:50] to change your mind and on how you look at food."
[00:04:53] Dr. Taz: Hmm.
[00:04:54] Carol Alt: And his name was [00:04:55] Dr. Timothy Brantley. He wrote the book called, uh, The Cure- Mm-hmm ... The Brantley Cure, and it was [00:05:00] 15 weeks New York Times bestseller list. Amazing. And he's my guru. And, um, I s- I... [00:05:05] At first I resisted, and then I said, "What am I doing?
[00:05:07] Carol Alt: I tried every stupid, [00:05:10] ridiculous diet out there, and nothing worked for me." And when I [00:05:15] spoke with the doctor, he just made total and complete sense. It was like the universe opened up, and I just [00:05:20] knew that this information that I was getting was something that was gonna change my life.
[00:05:24] Dr. Taz: I knew it. So you're [00:05:25] 36 years old, you're struggling with graying early, energy-
[00:05:29] Carol Alt: [00:05:30] Heal- But I had more health issues than that.
[00:05:31] Carol Alt: I mean, I had, uh, I w- I had a [00:05:35] candida, uh, blood infection- Mm ... which I didn't know about, and a doctor here told me it was, uh, [00:05:40] poison sumac. It turned out to be candida in my blood. Timothy, Dr. Timothy d- [00:05:45] diagnosed me right over the phone. He said, "I'm surprised you don't have this, this, this, this, and this." [00:05:50] Sinus infection, colds and flu after every movie.
[00:05:52] Dr. Taz: Mm.
[00:05:52] Carol Alt: I would be working three or four months on a movie, [00:05:55] boom, down for two weeks, back up to do a movie again. Oh,
[00:05:57] Dr. Taz: wow.
[00:05:57] Carol Alt: It was, it was a really bad [00:06:00] routine. And, uh, you know, I tried everything too to stay thin because in the modeling [00:06:05] industry- Right ... I, I was 5 foot 11 and 115 pounds. Mm. And, uh, the cover of Sports Illustrated, I was [00:06:10] 115 pounds.
[00:06:11] Carol Alt: And i- i- it w- you know, it, it does, it, that does [00:06:15] something to your body. Yo-yo dieting, dieting in itself, all these crazy things [00:06:20] people do- Trends, yeah. Mm-hmm ... to lose weight, they all wreak havoc on your body. And what I [00:06:25] found was raw food was kind of nirvana. It was the garden of eating. [00:06:30] You know? I could eat and not feel guilty and not have that fat thigh feeling- [00:06:35] Right
[00:06:35] Carol Alt: you know, when you go- Right, right. Oh, yes ... "Oh, I just feel like a..." Yeah. "Uh, what did I just eat?"
[00:06:37] Dr. Taz: Yeah.
[00:06:38] Carol Alt: And I [00:06:40] just knew if I stayed on this road that this was, this was the right [00:06:45] road because it's the closer you eat to God-
[00:06:49] Dr. Taz: This is almost [00:06:50] spiritual
[00:06:50] Carol Alt: It's all spiritual. I mean, it's all spiritual Wow. It's, it's how you [00:06:55] take care of this temple, this gift that you were given.
[00:06:58] Carol Alt: I see people [00:07:00] beat themselves up with alcohol and drugs and cigarettes and staying out all night and doing all kinds of [00:07:05] crazy thing, and they have total disrespect for their health. And then when they become unhealthy [00:07:10] or diseased, they go, "Why?" Yeah. "Why, God?" Yeah. "Why did you do this?" Right. [00:07:15] And it's like, not why, God.
[00:07:15] Carol Alt: It's like, you know, this was a gift. This was a gift you [00:07:20] were given. Health is a gift.
[00:07:21] Dr. Taz: Ooh, that's a great way to think about this.
[00:07:23] Carol Alt: Right. And you need [00:07:25] to take care of that gift, and you need to be appreciative and grateful of that gift. [00:07:30] And only when you lose that do you start [00:07:35] becoming grateful for all the small little things.
[00:07:37] Carol Alt: Mm. I always like to say to women, "Listen, you know, you could have all [00:07:40] the Versaces you want in your closet." Mm-hmm. "But if you're too sick to wear them, who cares?" Who
[00:07:43] Dr. Taz: cares? Right.
[00:07:44] Carol Alt: If you're too sick [00:07:45] to enjoy them, if you're not happy because hanging over your head every day is this hammer [00:07:50] about to hit your anvil- Mm
[00:07:51] Carol Alt: because you're, you know, you're, you're waiting for a diagnosis or [00:07:55] whatever. And one of my other doctors said, "It's not g-," you know, "And it's not if, Carol, it's when. [00:08:00] It's when it happens to people."
[00:08:02] Dr. Taz: Mm.
[00:08:02] Carol Alt: Because we don't take care of ourselves. It's really, [00:08:05] really important. And raw food was so easy. Like, everybody thinks it's so [00:08:10] difficult.
[00:08:10] Carol Alt: Right. It was the easiest thing I ever did. Try not eating.
[00:08:12] Dr. Taz: That was- I, I wanna learn more about this ... that was more difficult ... 'cause I am [00:08:15] absolutely fascinated with this. But before we go there, you know, for young women listening to [00:08:20] our show today, what were the three biggest mistakes that you made prior to [00:08:25] 36 when it came to trying to lose weight?
[00:08:28] Dr. Taz: assuming something was healthy, [00:08:30] you know, or just even your own self-care? What were some of the biggest, like, pitfalls and mistakes that you made when you look back? I [00:08:35] think
[00:08:35] Carol Alt: there's one big mistake, and that big mistake for me was I didn't educate [00:08:40] myself.
[00:08:40] Dr. Taz: Mm.
[00:08:40] Carol Alt: I listened to people, I watched the fads, I, I, I jumped and [00:08:45] tried everything instead of just sitting down and educating myself on the pathology of food, [00:08:50] how it works in your body, how your body works, what builds muscle, what [00:08:55] retains fat.
[00:08:56] Carol Alt: Th- education is the most important thing, and it's funny, it's the [00:09:00] one thing we don't get taught in school at all. No,
[00:09:02] Dr. Taz: we don't at all. All right, let's get into this raw [00:09:05] food. So when I hear raw food, and I don't know what you guys sitting at home or listening or watching [00:09:10] are thinking, but when I hear raw food, I'm thinking a lot of salads, a lot of vegetables.[00:09:15]
[00:09:15] Dr. Taz: Educate me. What is the raw food movement? What is the [00:09:20] raw food diet? How is it personalized? How does it retain muscle? How does it help burn fat? All the things you just- Oh my
[00:09:24] Carol Alt: God. [00:09:25] Yeah, I do hour-long lectures
[00:09:28] Dr. Taz: on this stuff. I'm like- We're gonna do it in 20 minutes. Let's go. No, so [00:09:30] no. Just, you know, those are some of my questions.
[00:09:32] Dr. Taz: I have a million, but let, start wherever you feel comfortable.
[00:09:34] Carol Alt: [00:09:35] Uh, well, you know, I lecture on this, so it's kind of, uh, there's, there's four things that [00:09:40] happen to food when you cook it. You know, cooking food is a, is a chemical [00:09:45] reaction. It's like putting a piece of wood in your fireplace and you light it on fire.
[00:09:48] Carol Alt: It starts out as wood, and then [00:09:50] through chemical reaction of heat, it becomes ash. Mm-hmm. And, and that's, that's all [00:09:55] the mole- molecules changing. So one, your molecules, the molecules in the food change, so your [00:10:00] body doesn't read it the same. The, uh, bonds between vitamins and minerals break, [00:10:05] so your body doesn't absorb the same.
[00:10:08] Carol Alt: It doesn't, uh... Do you [00:10:10] remember when, uh, uh, they, they, now, well, now they add, uh, calcium and vitamin D [00:10:15] and, uh, magnesium. They mix it together to make- Right ... your calcium- [00:10:20] Right ... because it doesn't absorb without vitamin D and magnesium. Right. They didn't know that, so they were just giving calcium to women [00:10:25] and nobody was getting a result.
[00:10:26] Carol Alt: Right. And then they went, "Oh, calcium is not recognized in the body without [00:10:30] vitamin D and magnesium."
[00:10:31] Dr. Taz: Right.
[00:10:31] Carol Alt: It's that way with every vitamin, every mineral in your [00:10:35] body, they're all intertwined, and heat breaks those bonds, so the body goes, "Hey, what's [00:10:40] this?" basically. Um, your food become, it goes from an alkaline.
[00:10:44] Carol Alt: [00:10:45] So l- let's take something like a tomato, which is a one alkaline, which is almost [00:10:50] acid, but it's, it's just slightly alkaline, but you cook it, it becomes a 10 double [00:10:55] crystalline oxalic acid. Mm. That's why we get such heartburn when we have- Right, right ... [00:11:00] spaghetti with tomato sauce, you know? And then, um, the enzymes are killed.
[00:11:04] Carol Alt: Yeah. And [00:11:05] really what that means, enzymes are like- [00:11:10] H- so it's like going to the bank every day and not putting anything in but taking money out
[00:11:14] Dr. Taz: Mm.
[00:11:14] Carol Alt: So if [00:11:15] you're putting food into your body every day that's cooked, it has no enzymes, the, the [00:11:20] molecular structure is all discombobulated, the vitamin, uh, the vitamin [00:11:25] mineral bonds are broken and it's really hard to absorb.
[00:11:27] Carol Alt: That means you're putting food into your body that your [00:11:30] body has to make its own vitamins and minerals, pulling pulling from [00:11:35] everywhere- Right,
[00:11:35] Dr. Taz: right ...
[00:11:36] Carol Alt: to make that enzyme to digest this basically bankrupt food. [00:11:40] And if you keep doing that, it's like going to the bank every single day, taking money out and never putting money [00:11:45] in.
[00:11:45] Carol Alt: Wow. At one point or another, depending on how much reserve you have, you're gonna go [00:11:50] bankrupt. And that's basically the bottom line of raw food. I don't eat [00:11:55] 100% raw food. I don't. Nobody can be 100% of anything. [00:12:00] Right. And if they tell you they're 100%- They're lying ... the only thing they are is 100% lying.
[00:12:03] Carol Alt: Exactly. All right. You [00:12:05] know, I, the, I know what I binge on.
[00:12:07] Dr. Taz: Yeah.
[00:12:08] Carol Alt: Hockey games, you know?
[00:12:09] Dr. Taz: Yeah. [00:12:10] Wait, what do you binge on? Popcorn. Popcorn?
[00:12:12] Carol Alt: At hockey games. You're
[00:12:12] Dr. Taz: a popcorn girl
[00:12:13] Carol Alt: too? I am a popcorn girl- Oh, that's my problem- ... at [00:12:15] hockey games ... too,
[00:12:15] Dr. Taz: yeah.
[00:12:15] Carol Alt: Yeah. Anyhow. But I take an enzyme before I do it- Oh ... so I don't draw my own enzymes out.
[00:12:19] Carol Alt: Ah, [00:12:20] okay. You know, when you understand, you know, what the body is and what food does in the [00:12:25] body, you can learn to counteract some of those things that, that you do, you know? [00:12:30] So it's really important to educate yourself. And so what is raw [00:12:35] food? Well, it's just about everything. I mean, anything that you eat cooked, I can find you [00:12:40] raw, including tiramisu.
[00:12:42] Carol Alt: Yeah, I know. I know. Look at, look [00:12:45]
[00:12:46] Dr. Taz: at your face. Wait, hang on a minute. I'm sitting here going, "Is tiramisu not raw?" So...
[00:12:48] Carol Alt: Tiramisu is not raw when you [00:12:50] get it. It's made of lady fingers- Yes ... which is, like, a vanilla wafer cookie, and it's made with [00:12:55] pasteurized, uh, I don't know, uh, um, all kinds of creams and- Right
[00:12:59] Carol Alt: what have you. [00:13:00] I can find it for you completely raw. And in fact, w- when I first brought it to my [00:13:05] mother's house, my mom was like, "Oh, don't bring your raw stuff, please." You know. Yeah. Raw, like everything, [00:13:10] has really come up in- Right ... in-
[00:13:12] Dr. Taz: Right ...
[00:13:14] Carol Alt: how it [00:13:15] tastes and the presentation of it- Right ... through the 30 or 40 years that I've been doing this.
[00:13:19] Dr. Taz: Right.
[00:13:19] Carol Alt: [00:13:20] So I found this, you know, amazing little place, it's in New York City, called Rawsome Treats, and [00:13:25] the girl was an MMA fighter.
[00:13:26] Dr. Taz: Oh
[00:13:26] Carol Alt: my gosh. Got my book. Wow, okay. Got my book. Her name is Watts, and, and [00:13:30] she got my book, and Watts, you know, when I first called, they said, she goes, "Okay, give me your name." I said, [00:13:35] "Carol Alt."
[00:13:35] Carol Alt: She goes, "No,
[00:13:36] Dr. Taz: wait, you're not
[00:13:37] Carol Alt: Carol Alt from Eating Raw?" She's like, "
[00:13:38] Dr. Taz: Stop playing a prank on [00:13:40] me right now."
[00:13:42] Carol Alt: I know. She's like, "Oh, my gosh." Yeah. "It was your book." Yeah. You know? "I was trying to suck wind." [00:13:45] Right. "You helped me so much." Right. But the food was terrible, so I, you know... And I make a lot of [00:13:50] my own stuff.
[00:13:50] Carol Alt: Right. Every morning, my own fabulous muffins.
[00:13:53] Dr. Taz: So, okay. So, so [00:13:55] define this out. Okay. What makes your muffin raw? What makes your tiramisu raw? What is a raw [00:14:00] protein source? Like, maybe, like-
[00:14:02] Carol Alt: Well, everything is practically protein. Okay. I mean, [00:14:05] legumes, like lentils or chickpeas or kidney beans, when they're not cooked, when they're not soft, [00:14:10] when they're hard like marbles-
[00:14:10] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm
[00:14:11] Carol Alt: that's in its raw state. Mm-hmm. You drop it in water, you let it soak for 12 hours. It's [00:14:15] just about sprouting, the little tail comes out. Mm-hmm, yep. That's sprouting. That's germinating. It's really [00:14:20] simple. It's drop it in water and walk away. That is all protein heavy. Protein
[00:14:24] Dr. Taz: heavy.
[00:14:24] Carol Alt: When you [00:14:25] cook it- It goes the other way.
[00:14:27] Carol Alt: It becomes carbo-heavy. Mm. So basically people are [00:14:30] thinking they're eating legumes- For
[00:14:32] Dr. Taz: protein ...
[00:14:32] Carol Alt: are, are right. They're not, unless they've germinated [00:14:35] them, you know? S- But also a lot of vegetables, broccoli, all these [00:14:40] vegetables in the raw state are pretty much protein heavy. They have a lot of [00:14:45] protein in them.
[00:14:46] Carol Alt: So, but I also eat fish. I'm not vegan.
[00:14:49] Dr. Taz: Right. '
[00:14:49] Carol Alt: Cause [00:14:50] my ancestry is German, and I've been- Right.
[00:14:52] Dr. Taz: So that's what goes on in a lot of people's brain. Yeah. Right? You're raw, you're [00:14:55] vegan. That's not true.
[00:14:56] Carol Alt: No.
[00:14:56] Dr. Taz: Okay.
[00:14:57] Carol Alt: You can be vegan. You can be raw. You can be [00:15:00] gluten-free.
[00:15:00] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:15:00] Carol Alt: You could be any version of any which way.
[00:15:03] Carol Alt: You can, uh, you know, e- be v- [00:15:05] v- you know, fish person. I have friends who are fruitarians. They only eat fruit. Mm-hmm. I had one who was a [00:15:10] breatharian. Don't even go there. You don't even wanna go there.
[00:15:14] Dr. Taz: Oh my God. Wow. [00:15:15] You
[00:15:16] Carol Alt: don't wanna go there, what he drinks.
[00:15:17] Dr. Taz: Okay. Okay? Breatharian.
[00:15:19] Carol Alt: Yeah.
[00:15:19] Dr. Taz: [00:15:20] Okay.
[00:15:20] Carol Alt: And it ain't white.
[00:15:23] Carol Alt: No, I mean, you know, there's, there's... I, [00:15:25] I, I call myself an extreme alternative, but- Right ... I'm not that extreme. Right. But, [00:15:30] you know, it's, i- there's, there's so many versions of what you can do, and there are many raw foodies who [00:15:35] are also vegan. I am not. Okay. My, my ancestry is, [00:15:40] is, uh, is, um, Scottish and French and German, and w- we're all [00:15:45] meat eaters, so I tend to eat meat, uh, or not meat, more fish, [00:15:50] you know, three times a week.
[00:15:51] Dr. Taz: But you eat raw fish?
[00:15:52] Carol Alt: Raw fish.
[00:15:52] Dr. Taz: And so
[00:15:53] Carol Alt: how do
[00:15:54] Dr. Taz: you prep- So carpaccio-
[00:15:54] Carol Alt: Carpa- Okay ... [00:15:55] or seared salmon. I drop it into my salads. I y- [00:16:00] you know, um, uh, tartares. Yeah. I love tartares. Love tartares. Yeah. And you could do [00:16:05] tartare with all kinds of things. You could do it with beef, and you could do it with fish. Don't try it with chicken.
[00:16:09] Dr. Taz: Yeah. [00:16:10] Ugh. Mm.
[00:16:10] Carol Alt: I, I avoid chicken. It's too much hormones for me. Yeah.
[00:16:12] Dr. Taz: Yeah.
[00:16:13] Carol Alt: But so yeah, I mean, there's so many [00:16:15] things you can do, but there's also amazing desserts. I make my muffins. [00:16:20] They've got four ingredients.
[00:16:21] Dr. Taz: What, what are they?
[00:16:22] Carol Alt: They're raw almond flour, which I can make- Mm-hmm ... or I [00:16:25] can order online. It has figs.
[00:16:27] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:16:28] Carol Alt: It has, uh, uh, [00:16:30] lemon with a little, sometime a little vanilla-
[00:16:33] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm ...
[00:16:33] Carol Alt: and, uh, raw chocolate [00:16:35] chips.
[00:16:35] Dr. Taz: You just mix it together.
[00:16:36] Carol Alt: I mix it together and throw it in the dehydrator, walk away, come back five or six hours [00:16:40] later, sometimes longer. Sometimes I like them really moist. It depends on what my guests like, too.
[00:16:44] Carol Alt: Mm. Some [00:16:45] people like really crunchy stuff and dry stuff, and other people like really moist, so it just depends [00:16:50] on how long I leave it in a dehydrator.
[00:16:51] Dr. Taz: Do you eat, like, the meats, like beef or [00:16:55] lamb or any of those guys, or no?
[00:16:56] Carol Alt: I occasionally eat beef.
[00:16:58] Dr. Taz: Okay.
[00:16:59] Carol Alt: But carpaccio- But again, a carpaccio style ... or tartare.
[00:16:59] Carol Alt: Right. Okay. Yeah. Gotcha. Tartare car-[00:17:00]
[00:17:03] Carol Alt: or carpaccio. I m- [00:17:05] mostly I like fish. I was never really, never really liked beef, [00:17:10] and I don't like the way we treat our animals. Right. It's really hard for me. Right. I, I, you know, I, I work with the Washington Heights [00:17:15] Cat Sanctuary. We rescue animals.
[00:17:16] Dr. Taz: Ah.
[00:17:17] Carol Alt: I support them, so it's really, it, it really [00:17:20] is hard.
[00:17:20] Carol Alt: And, uh, you know, it's hard being in the fashion industry because there's fur on everything. Right. Right. You
[00:17:24] Dr. Taz: know? Yeah. I,
[00:17:24] Carol Alt: [00:17:25] I... You know, we can't avoid it completely, but I, I really advocate [00:17:30] more humane treatment, for sure.
[00:17:31] Dr. Taz: So I'm gonna flip this on you for just a second. Sure. [00:17:35] So, uh, many systems of medicine, including conventional Western medicine...[00:17:40]
[00:17:40] Dr. Taz: Ayurveda is one. Chinese medicine is another one that I can think of very quickly... talk [00:17:45] about the burden of raw food on the gut.
[00:17:47] Carol Alt: Mm-hmm.
[00:17:47] Dr. Taz: That the gut, you know, has trouble with [00:17:50] this. Mm-hmm. What you're saying is, you know, very different from that. Mm. Explain that disconnect for me a little bit. Okay. [00:17:55]
[00:17:55] Carol Alt: Well, I understand as people get older, like we talked about before- Right
[00:17:59] Carol Alt: they have the [00:18:00] accumulation of everything they've done to their body. So if you're constantly eating cooked food and it's [00:18:05] constantly drawing out of your reserves, your, your hydrochloric acid and your [00:18:10] enzymes in your stomach are going to get weaker and weaker. So I can understand [00:18:15] as people get older, they don't advocate eating a lot of raw food because it's harder to [00:18:20] digest.
[00:18:20] Dr. Taz: Mm.
[00:18:21] Carol Alt: In my case, what I did, because I had terrible [00:18:25] digestion, I started with a, a lot of green powder and juices, and [00:18:30] juicing. Because juicing is the fastest way I know [00:18:35] to re-nutrition the body. Yes. Yeah, I agree. And I'm not talking about apple juice- Right ... and pear juice. Right. I'm [00:18:40] talking about the heavy-duty greens, kelp, and, and, you know, not just cucumber [00:18:45] alone.
[00:18:45] Carol Alt: I don't get that. I mean, y- you can't- Right ... you can't change the entire body, body with [00:18:50] one vegetable.
[00:18:50] Dr. Taz: Right.
[00:18:51] Carol Alt: You need a wide variety of everything. Put the peppers in there. I have [00:18:55] a, a seventh heaven soup that a friend of mine gave me the, uh, recipe for. It's in, in one of my [00:19:00] books.
[00:19:00] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:19:00] Carol Alt: It is so delicious, and it's, you know, basically all it is is you throw all these things in, you know, all [00:19:05] these vegetables into a blender and blend it, and it's so good.
[00:19:09] Carol Alt: And it's [00:19:10] so good for you. When people come to me and they say, "Oh, I have this kind of issue [00:19:15] or that kind of issue," I say, "Listen, you know, first of all, uh, I, I don't advocate talking [00:19:20] against your doctors."
[00:19:20] Dr. Taz: Right.
[00:19:21] Carol Alt: But to supplement whatever it is else that you are [00:19:25] doing, if you've got any kind of inflammatory issue, I'm talking about [00:19:30] cancer or- Right
[00:19:30] Carol Alt: or, um,
[00:19:32] Dr. Taz: uh- Autoimmune disease ...
[00:19:33] Carol Alt: autoimmune dis- You know ... well, more [00:19:35] like i- arthritis or- Yeah ... you know, all of these, you know, it... Aging.
[00:19:39] Dr. Taz: Right.
[00:19:39] Carol Alt: I [00:19:40] consider aging a disease. Mm-hmm. It's, it's the body breaking down, and if we can [00:19:45] rebuild and give the body what it needs, the body is so freaking brilliant. It's
[00:19:49] Dr. Taz: [00:19:50] amazing.
[00:19:50] Carol Alt: I mean, the universe- It's
[00:19:51] Dr. Taz: amazing,
[00:19:52] Carol Alt: yeah ... knows what it's doing. God, if you will. He [00:19:55] knows what he's doing. And you give the body what it needs, and you can [00:20:00] rebuild yourself, and it just depends on how dedicated you are. For me, I was [00:20:05] super-duper dedicated.
[00:20:05] Dr. Taz: Yeah.
[00:20:06] Carol Alt: But first because I fell, and I had to dig myself out of a hole.
[00:20:09] Dr. Taz: [00:20:10] Right.
[00:20:10] Carol Alt: But also because I was competing against those sucky little 20-year-olds- ... who were [00:20:15] stealing jobs from me. I was like, "Wait a
[00:20:18] Dr. Taz: minute." You're showing them.
[00:20:19] Carol Alt: [00:20:20] I was like, I- You're still
[00:20:20] Dr. Taz: showing them.
[00:20:21] Carol Alt: I wanna com-
[00:20:21] Dr. Taz: I don't even wanna ask you how old you are, but you look
[00:20:23] Carol Alt: incredible. I'm 64. You can [00:20:25] Google it. Oh
[00:20:25] Dr. Taz: my
[00:20:25] Carol Alt: gosh.
[00:20:25] Carol Alt: The only time I ever lied about my age by two years- ... when I walked away from the table, the guy [00:20:30] turned to my manager and said, "Should I tell her I know that she's 34?" Oh, my God. I'm like, "So I said I was 30." I mean, come on. I love it.[00:20:35]
[00:20:36] Carol Alt: Never again lie about your age. Love it. And now not in the age of [00:20:40] Google. I remember the first time somebody said, "Oh, we Googled you." I was like I'm on [00:20:45] Google
[00:20:45] Dr. Taz: I know
[00:20:47] Carol Alt: It's so exciting. It was like, yippee ki-yay, [00:20:50] I made Google.
[00:20:50] Dr. Taz: Well, okay, so 36 you go raw. You're trying to, like, get all these 20-year-olds out of your [00:20:55] way.
[00:20:55] Dr. Taz: What is the first few things that you noticed?
[00:20:58] Carol Alt: Oh my gosh. Listen, [00:21:00] you wanna, you wanna get the best comeuppance of your whole entire life-
[00:21:03] Dr. Taz: Yes ...
[00:21:04] Carol Alt: go raw for, [00:21:05] like, three months and walk into your mom's house. Best thing that ever happened to me. [00:21:10] My mom looked at me and she said, "What have you done?" And she didn't say Carol.
[00:21:13] Carol Alt: She said Carol Ann. [00:21:15] So I thought, "Oh."
[00:21:16] Dr. Taz: She means serious. What did I do? Yeah. The double name's come out.
[00:21:18] Carol Alt: It's serious. I know. Carol Ann. [00:21:20] Uh, and I said, I said, "What do you mean?" She goes, "You are starting to look [00:21:25] mortal." I was like, "Wow, my mom thought I, like, was [00:21:30] immortal," and I was starting to look mortal. [00:21:35] And now she thinks I look immortal again.
[00:21:38] Carol Alt: This is kinda pretty [00:21:40] cool. Oh,
[00:21:40] Dr. Taz: wow. So probably glowing.
[00:21:42] Carol Alt: Well, your skin comes back- Yeah ... your energy [00:21:45] comes back, that look in your eye.
[00:21:46] Dr. Taz: Yeah.
[00:21:47] Carol Alt: You know what I mean? The light. Yeah. Yeah, I realized I was walking down the street and [00:21:50] people are laugh- you know, smiling at me, and I'm like, "Do I have, like, broccoli on my face?"
[00:21:53] Carol Alt: Like, why are these people, like, looking at me and smiling? And I [00:21:55] realized it's 'cause I was like an idiot walking down the street with a smile on my face- Yeah ... 'cause it feels so good. You feel good, yeah. You have so [00:22:00] much energy, and you ... You know, for me it was about paying it forward. [00:22:05] My mom went raw. The minute she saw me, she said, "Okay, tell me what you did."
[00:22:07] Carol Alt: And, uh, I told her. My [00:22:10] boyfriend at the time, Alexei Yashin, he was, he was, uh, 13 years younger than I was. Um, I [00:22:15] was 38. He was 25. And one day he came to me and he said, "Okay." He said, "I [00:22:20] Googled how old you are." Yeah, I know. Googled how old you are. And I'm
[00:22:23] Dr. Taz: out.
[00:22:23] Carol Alt: No. [00:22:25] Yes. No, he said, "And I looked at you, and I look at other women."
[00:22:27] Carol Alt: Yeah. "And I'm, and I watch how you eat, [00:22:30] and can you explain this to me?"
[00:22:32] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:22:33] Carol Alt: And I explained it to him, [00:22:35] and he, boom, like, like over, he ... You know, but he's that [00:22:40] kinda Russian discipline- Right, right, right ... which I'm that kinda German discipline- Right ... kinda thing. [00:22:45] And, and, you know, he ... I, I got, I was shooting a series in Toronto.
[00:22:48] Carol Alt: I got on an [00:22:50] airplane with one day off and went over to help him because he called me up and said, "Oh my gosh, I [00:22:55] lost like 20 pounds. I, I'm, I'm dying." Mm. I'm like, "What? Why? What did you do? What'd you do?" He goes, "Well, you told me [00:23:00] if I did this," and I was like, oh my gosh, he went raw and not really, like, filling his house or [00:23:05] educating himself.
[00:23:05] Carol Alt: Right,
[00:23:05] Dr. Taz: right.
[00:23:06] Carol Alt: So I went over there and I showed him. I'm like, "Look, I could sear you a [00:23:10] steak." Yeah. Like, you know, you can g- get lots of fruit and vegetables, and that was back in the [00:23:15] day when there was nothing raw on the market.
[00:23:17] Dr. Taz: Right, right.
[00:23:17] Carol Alt: Now there's lots. I mean, they're, they're trying- More options ... to hit [00:23:20] every market.
[00:23:20] Carol Alt: Right. So they're gonna
[00:23:22] Dr. Taz: have lots of raw stuff. 'Cause everyone is so interested. Yeah. But to your [00:23:25] point, though, okay, someone listening to us talk today is like, "I wanna try this. I want, I wanna go raw." You know, [00:23:30] how do they begin? Like, what are the pitfalls? First thing, get rid
[00:23:31] Carol Alt: of all the garbage in your house.
[00:23:33] Dr. Taz: Garbage being, like, the [00:23:35] processed stuff? Or-
[00:23:35] Carol Alt: Yeah, get, get rid of all those habit-forming things that you have, like the [00:23:40] crackers and the chips and the things like the- Popcorn? Yep. Get, don't, if you don't have it around when you go [00:23:45] through that moment- That's true. See, I find when I fall into those moments, it's [00:23:50] because I didn't nutrition myself well enough.
[00:23:53] Dr. Taz: So true.
[00:23:53] Carol Alt: So I didn't eat [00:23:55] enough vegetables. I didn't eat enough meat. I, or You know what? You can eat a raw [00:24:00] tiramisu from Rawesome Treats, for example, and that could be your dinner. Mm. And it's more [00:24:05] nutritious for you. What's in that is more nutritious for you than, you know, having a spaghe- [00:24:10] plate of spaghetti or, you know, ham dinner.
[00:24:13] Carol Alt: I mean, it just... Because [00:24:15] that stuff's all cooked and there's- Right ... nothing in it. It's devoid. It's taking out of your body instead of putting in. [00:24:20] And here's this little cake with nuts and figs and coconut [00:24:25] and all these amazing things that is feeding your body, and by the way, [00:24:30] feeding your skin, hair, and nails.
[00:24:31] Dr. Taz: Right. '
[00:24:32] Carol Alt: Cause the body works on a hierarchy, [00:24:35] okay? So the first thing it does when it gets any little morsel of food [00:24:40] that it could use, it has to rebuild. It has to rebuild your muscle and your [00:24:45] organs and the ligaments that hold things. I mean, it goes for the really important things. The most important thing it goes for is [00:24:50] making enzymes to digest- Mm-hmm
[00:24:50] Carol Alt: more food, hoping to get something out of this food to rebuild your body. [00:24:55] You know, if you don't give yourself enough of all of these things, by the time it [00:25:00] comes to doing his skin, hair, and nails,
[00:25:02] Dr. Taz: It's done.
[00:25:03] Carol Alt: You're out of, you're out of luck. It's
[00:25:04] Dr. Taz: so interesting. [00:25:05] You
[00:25:05] Carol Alt: run out of gas, as they say.
[00:25:06] Dr. Taz: It's fascinating, 'cause, you know, I stare at this, you know, lab work all the [00:25:10] time, and the thing I keep coming back to, even in our children, by the way, not just adults, is the lack [00:25:15] of digestive enzymes.
[00:25:16] Dr. Taz: I talk about it over and over again. So many people are fat spilling, protein [00:25:20] spilling. They're not breaking foods down. And then in the children, what it's looking like is a lot [00:25:25] of the sensory stuff we're seeing, the lack of focus and all this, you know, anxiety, all these other things. In [00:25:30] adults, we're seeing the bloating, the weight gain.
[00:25:31] Dr. Taz: Well, it's a lack of
[00:25:31] Carol Alt: nutrition, I mean, 'cause the body's not able to- To
[00:25:34] Dr. Taz: absorb ...
[00:25:34] Carol Alt: use [00:25:35] all these things- Correct, yeah ... and, and rebuild itself and- It's
[00:25:38] Dr. Taz: so interesting ...
[00:25:38] Carol Alt: and, you know, if, if [00:25:40] you understand this Outside of a lab, okay, if you [00:25:45] understand this in terms of the body, then you understand that when you take in fats that have been cooked, the body goes, [00:25:50] "Oh, look at this.
[00:25:50] Carol Alt: I have a truckload size of something."
[00:25:53] Dr. Taz: Yeah. "
[00:25:54] Carol Alt: It [00:25:55] kinda looks like a fat. Well, let me pull all these [00:26:00] enzymes and minerals and everything from my body and digest this. Oh, wait, now that it's digested, it [00:26:05] kinda looks like fat. If I put these together over here, I got a Volkswagen size of fat." [00:26:10] Mm. "Let me make some more enzymes to digest that so I can utilize it."
[00:26:14] Carol Alt: What do [00:26:15] you do with the rest of those pieces from that giant truck that are not useful because they're all broken [00:26:20] up and the body can't figure out what to do with it? They store it in the adipose tissue. Mm. So now your adipose [00:26:25] tissue is absorbing this fat, and on men it's [00:26:30] the belly, on women it's the butt and the thighs.
[00:26:32] Dr. Taz: Yep.
[00:26:32] Carol Alt: Right? You know, that fat thigh feeling. Oh, yeah. Oh,
[00:26:34] Dr. Taz: [00:26:35] yes.
[00:26:35] Carol Alt: Oh, yeah. That's where it comes from.
[00:26:36] Dr. Taz: Yes. My story.
[00:26:37] Carol Alt: Right.
[00:26:37] Dr. Taz: Anyhow.
[00:26:37] Carol Alt: But you, you know, it, with, it, what people [00:26:40] don't understand about the cold pressed oils and fats that's so fascinating, and you know this as a clinician- [00:26:45] Right.
[00:26:45] Dr. Taz: Right ...
[00:26:45] Carol Alt: is that it can, it can do a preferential exchange.
[00:26:49] Carol Alt: [00:26:50] So if you're eating good fats, it can do a preferential exchange of old fats out of the [00:26:55] adipose tissue.
[00:26:56] Dr. Taz: Fascinating.
[00:26:57] Carol Alt: And slim you down. Mm-hmm. So all [00:27:00] these thoughts that we have about fat being fattening Not so true Not
[00:27:04] Dr. Taz: so [00:27:05] true
[00:27:05] Carol Alt: And Udo Erasmus wrote, uh, Udo Erasmus wrote the best book on this, and he [00:27:10] does, you know, Udo's Choice oil, which is one of my oils- Right
[00:27:12] Carol Alt: of choice. I love
[00:27:13] Dr. Taz: those oils.
[00:27:13] Carol Alt: Yeah. Such great
[00:27:14] Dr. Taz: oils. Yeah.
[00:27:14] Carol Alt: And his [00:27:15] daughter, Us, is a very good friend of mine. Oh, really? I'm, I'm- Oh my gosh ... godmother to her son. Amazing. Yeah. I mean, [00:27:20] I know a good thing when I find it. I got right into that family. I was like, right there. [00:27:25] Smart
[00:27:25] Dr. Taz: woman, obviously. I know
[00:27:26] Carol Alt: where my oils are boiled.
[00:27:28] Dr. Taz: Yeah.
[00:27:28] Carol Alt: Yeah.
[00:27:28] Dr. Taz: Well, okay. [00:27:30] So you're starting out. You said get rid of the processed stuff first- Yeah ... and all the junky stuff. [00:27:35] Next, where would you go next?
[00:27:36] Carol Alt: What I would do is, um, I would get all kinds of vegetables in a juicer-
[00:27:39] Dr. Taz: [00:27:40] Okay ...
[00:27:40] Carol Alt: so that I make sure I get my juices fresh, not pasteurized. Mm-hmm. It's completely different when it's [00:27:45] pasteurized.
[00:27:45] Carol Alt: You know, 212 degrees Fahrenheit at 12 hours kills any enzymes- Mm ... [00:27:50] as well as any bacteria. And then I would, I would test stuff. [00:27:55] And if you've got children, take your children with you. Test all these raw things. Test the [00:28:00] raw pickles as opposed to the cooked pickles. Mm. You know? Um, make things. [00:28:05] On, on my Instagram at
[00:28:06] Dr. Taz: modelcarolalt.
[00:28:07] Dr. Taz: Love [00:28:10] it.
[00:28:10] Carol Alt: I did- I
[00:28:11] Dr. Taz: follow now.
[00:28:11] Carol Alt: Yes. Modelcarolalt. Oh, yeah. Um, I did, [00:28:15] during COVID, I did, uh, you know, 200 recipes.
[00:28:18] Dr. Taz: Wow.
[00:28:19] Carol Alt: And, [00:28:20] you know, it's, it's so great to get your kids involved. Instead of saying, [00:28:25] "Here, you have to eat this, it's raw," say, "What tastes good to you?"
[00:28:28] Dr. Taz: Right. "
[00:28:28] Carol Alt: What do you [00:28:30] like? Do you like corn? Let's try some corn.
[00:28:33] Carol Alt: Let's make this [00:28:35] radish out of corn," or, uh, relish, sorry, "relish out of corn."
[00:28:37] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm. "
[00:28:37] Carol Alt: Oh, do you like guacamole? By the [00:28:40] way, do you know you can take an avocado, add some Zint raw chocolate..." And [00:28:45] by the way, I don't get paid for any of these
[00:28:46] Dr. Taz: advertisements here. This,
[00:28:48] Carol Alt: out of the goodness of my heart [00:28:50] I'm giving you this info- Getting free tips
[00:28:51] Carol Alt: 'cause then you all order it and I can't get it. Free tips, right? Yes. Then I can't get it when I need it.
[00:28:54] Dr. Taz: [00:28:55] Right.
[00:28:55] Carol Alt: But Zint does a r- you know, a regular chocolate and a raw chocolate powder.
[00:28:58] Dr. Taz: Uh-huh.
[00:28:59] Carol Alt: Put [00:29:00] that into your avocado with a little bit of honey and you got the most outrageous mousse. Yum. [00:29:05] Just don't tell anybody what it is until after they eat it- Yeah
[00:29:08] Carol Alt: because in their brain they go, "Oh,
[00:29:09] Dr. Taz: [00:29:10] avocado." Right.
[00:29:10] Carol Alt: And I know, 'cause I was one of those people. Oh my gosh.
[00:29:12] Dr. Taz: Same.
[00:29:13] Carol Alt: I was like, "I can't think of [00:29:15] avocado as anything but guacamole." So
[00:29:16] Dr. Taz: when you're juicing these vegetables, you, like, you're running it through a juicer. You're not [00:29:20] retaining the pulp or anything like that.
[00:29:21] Carol Alt: Nope. Okay. Because you're talking about these [00:29:25] ayurvedics and all these other disciplines- Right ... who probably could be right that we're [00:29:30] having trouble digesting stuff, so you don't want the pulp. You want the nutrition. You just
[00:29:33] Dr. Taz: want it to go straight to the cell.
[00:29:34] Carol Alt: [00:29:35] You want the nutrition. Okay. Which is why you don't wanna do it with, with fruit juices because it's too much sugar [00:29:40] too fast for the body.
[00:29:41] Carol Alt: Mm. And then you get an insulin reaction. But, um, no, the, you want [00:29:45] the vegetables and you want, you want to juice. I juiced for three months- [00:29:50] Every day, three times a day, kamikaze these little- Mm-hmm ... you know, Greens [00:29:55] Plus and Garden of Eden has them. I think even Elle Macpherson has one. Elle, you owe me one. Um, [00:30:00] has, has these green powders.
[00:30:01] Dr. Taz: Right.
[00:30:02] Carol Alt: And I was kamikaze-ing them three times a day, and then finally my [00:30:05] doctor came to me and said, "Okay, you know, you're ready to... You're ready for a seven-day fast." And I almost, [00:30:10] like, I fought and screamed and- So he was- ... spit at him and kicked and-
[00:30:13] Dr. Taz: He was
[00:30:13] Carol Alt: re- ... pulled his hair
[00:30:14] Dr. Taz: and- Overnutri- he [00:30:15] was nutrient optimizing you.
[00:30:16] Dr. Taz: Yep. Then the fast. And then the fast. Why did, why did he want you to fast?
[00:30:19] Carol Alt: [00:30:20] Because he wanted to start cutting toxins out of my body. Ah. That's
[00:30:23] Dr. Taz: what I thought.
[00:30:23] Carol Alt: Yeah. You know, day five of [00:30:25] a fast... Now, first of all, you never should go into a fast-
[00:30:27] Dr. Taz: Straight ...
[00:30:28] Carol Alt: straight. I
[00:30:28] Dr. Taz: say that all
[00:30:28] Carol Alt: the time. You always have to [00:30:30] wind down off of food.
[00:30:32] Carol Alt: Correct. Um, I did a lot of psyllium and green powders [00:30:35] for five, for seven days. By day five, you're cutting into the liver. I mean, you speak to [00:30:40] anybody on day five of a fast and they're really nasty. Mm-hmm. They're, "Ar," you know? Right. And you're like, "Oh, day five, huh?" [00:30:45] Yeah. You know? It is. It, you know, it, that's the way- Right
[00:30:47] Carol Alt: the body works. And I [00:30:50] remember driving up and down Santa Monica Boulevard, and they had a Boston Chicken. [00:30:55] And I was like, "I just need to smell the chicken. I mean, I just, I need chicken. Oh, my God." I was [00:31:00] like a junkie. I was like... And I called up Dr. Brantley and I said, I said, "Timothy," like, [00:31:05] "what is this? Like, I just want chicken.
[00:31:06] Carol Alt: I just like-" ... anything with like a... I'll just lick my [00:31:10] fingers. Right. I just need chicken. And he said, "Yeah."
[00:31:13] Dr. Taz: Day five.
[00:31:13] Carol Alt: Because you're cutting [00:31:15] into the toxins in your body, and when you're, when you're blocked to get that stuff out, [00:31:20] it spins around in your blood system, and it goes to your brain, and it [00:31:25] triggers- Mm
[00:31:25] Carol Alt: a memory. That's where these cravings when you're, when you're [00:31:30] fasting-
[00:31:30] Dr. Taz: Stressed or
[00:31:31] Carol Alt: fasted, yeah ... they, they, that's where they come from.
[00:31:33] Dr. Taz: Mm.
[00:31:33] Carol Alt: And when your liver, which is, uh, [00:31:35] really the only sewer system, it's really the only way to get the garbage [00:31:40] out-
[00:31:40] Dr. Taz: The laundromat, I call it. The laundromat of the body. I
[00:31:41] Carol Alt: call it the sewer.
[00:31:42] Carol Alt: Yeah. It's the only way to get the- Sewer
[00:31:43] Dr. Taz: might be stronger, but-
[00:31:44] Carol Alt: Well, but it [00:31:45] is. I mean, what comes out? Right, exactly. Everything goes into the sewer. Yeah,
[00:31:48] Dr. Taz: pretty
[00:31:48] Carol Alt: much. Starts here. [00:31:50] Yeah. So, you know, you wanna keep that as clean as possible so [00:31:55] it doesn't kick the toxins back out into your blood and spin it around and [00:32:00] give you a craving for all that nasty, horrible stuff.
[00:32:03] Dr. Taz: I love the idea of vegetable juicing. [00:32:05] You know, if someone wants to do this in an intermediate way, could they start to take their [00:32:10] meats and to take some of their stuff and instead of- Yeah, start
[00:32:12] Carol Alt: searing things ...
[00:32:12] Dr. Taz: I was gonna say, instead of, like, full out [00:32:15] grilling- See- ... just sear it or something like
[00:32:16] Carol Alt: that ... Dr.
[00:32:16] Carol Alt: Taz, you're right because- Yeah ... I, I go, I go for more like, [00:32:20] I get people can eat a fish and they'll [00:32:25] understand that, you know, seared fish is raw inside. Right. They'll get that. What they don't get is all the [00:32:30] other stuff, like how do I get my dessert? Right. How do I get... You know, I'm sitting down at TV, I [00:32:35] want something to nosh on.
[00:32:36] Carol Alt: Right. You know? I get raw nuts. I, [00:32:40] uh, like I said, I do-
[00:32:40] Dr. Taz: Wait, wait, wait. What's a raw nut versus a regular nut?
[00:32:43] Carol Alt: Oh, well, you know, when they roast them. Sounds [00:32:45] like a joke. You know? When they roast them. Ah, okay. Well, nuts is all nut oils. Right. So if you're roasting them, you're cooking oils. [00:32:50] Now you gotta digest it, now you gotta make the enzymes, now, you know what I mean?
[00:32:53] Carol Alt: Yeah, the whole
[00:32:53] Dr. Taz: thing again.
[00:32:53] Carol Alt: Right. Yeah, okay. So, you know, [00:32:55] just decide... I, I get a whole mixture of nuts. I drop raisins and cranberries in it, and I [00:33:00] mix it all up. Sometimes I put, uh, uh, dark chocolate chips in it.
[00:33:04] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:33:04] Carol Alt: [00:33:05] And you make a trail mix. I mean, it's so easy. Sounds
[00:33:07] Dr. Taz: so easy.
[00:33:07] Carol Alt: Yeah, you put it in a bowl and you can eat that while you're [00:33:10] watching television or if you have friends over.
[00:33:12] Carol Alt: You could do a whole crudité with all kinds of... I, I did, like, I, [00:33:15] in one of my books, I think I had, like, 15 or 20 different sauces for dipping in. I mean, it's, [00:33:20] it's out there. The information is out there. It's there. It's so much easier than when I started. When I started- [00:33:25] Right ... there was zero. I had to make everything.
[00:33:27] Dr. Taz: From scratch.
[00:33:28] Carol Alt: Mm-hmm.
[00:33:29] Dr. Taz: So [00:33:30] bodybuilders are raw. Mo- models can be raw. Who should not be raw? [00:33:35]
[00:33:35] Carol Alt: Anybody who is more, um, alkaline, [00:33:40] and y- you know, I always said my boyfriend, he was, uh, pretty like doo-doo doo-doo. Mm-hmm. You [00:33:45] know? You know those people- Oh, yeah. Uh-huh ... that
[00:33:46] Dr. Taz: are
[00:33:47] Carol Alt: like, "Okay, we'll get there when we get there."
[00:33:48] Carol Alt: Yeah. I mean, I wish I had a little of that.
[00:33:49] Dr. Taz: [00:33:50] I wish I had that too.
[00:33:50] Carol Alt: Yeah. It's so nice. I don't have that. But, you know, if they're alkaline [00:33:55] people, um, then y- you know, you don't need as much raw, but it's [00:34:00] always good to have raw.
[00:34:02] Dr. Taz: Do you test your acidity and [00:34:05] alkalinity?
[00:34:05] Carol Alt: Oh, I did, yeah, I used to do all the time.
[00:34:07] Carol Alt: Now I- How would
[00:34:07] Dr. Taz: you test it?
[00:34:08] Carol Alt: Now I can feel it. You [00:34:10] can feel
[00:34:10] Dr. Taz: it.
[00:34:10] Carol Alt: But, you know, you get pH papers. Yeah. And they sell them online now. Yeah, yeah. I mean, I used to have to seek [00:34:15] out a pharmacy that would have them and not mind selling them to me and, you know, you take [00:34:20] between 8:00 and 10:00 in the morning, 2:00 and 4:00 in the afternoon, 8:00 and 10:00 at night, your saliva and your pee.[00:34:25]
[00:34:25] Carol Alt: N- not around food, not around brushing your teeth, not around water. You take them clean, [00:34:30] and you write them down.
[00:34:31] Dr. Taz: And track them.
[00:34:32] Carol Alt: And, and you can track them. So, um, y- you [00:34:35] really wanna be optimal is supposed to be between, uh, 6.8 and [00:34:40] 7.2. I was a 5.5.
[00:34:41] Dr. Taz: Ooh.
[00:34:41] Carol Alt: I was so proud. I was like, "Look at this, I'm [00:34:45] blue."
[00:34:45] Dr. Taz: And Dr.
[00:34:46] Dr. Taz: Ting was like, "That is not
[00:34:47] Carol Alt: good." That's not great. I'm like, "What do you mean? It's so pretty." Yeah, that's not great. No, [00:34:50] no. You wanna be yellow. And that yellow took me [00:34:55] 25 years to do, 30 years to do.
[00:34:57] Dr. Taz: Wow. And-
[00:34:58] Carol Alt: Only recently did my [00:35:00] doctor say to me, "You know, okay, you need to eat a little more cooked because you swung from [00:35:05] way acid to way alkaline."
[00:35:07] Carol Alt: And I could feel it because when [00:35:10] you're, when you're really alkaline, you get kind of a little apathetic, you know, a little depressed, [00:35:15] you know?
[00:35:15] Dr. Taz: Versus acidic. How are you?
[00:35:16] Carol Alt: Versus us.
[00:35:17] Dr. Taz: Yeah.
[00:35:18] Carol Alt: Two crazy women running around- ... the [00:35:20] city trying to do podcasts and- Everything
[00:35:22] Dr. Taz: in the world. I
[00:35:23] Carol Alt: love
[00:35:23] Dr. Taz: it ...
[00:35:24] Carol Alt: and [00:35:25] clinicians and actresses.
[00:35:26] Carol Alt: All that. You know, all those, all those crazy- All those crazy things ... A-type pers- personalities. Yeah.
[00:35:29] Dr. Taz: [00:35:30] Well, I wanna bring you back. I took you back to 36, but I wanna bring you back to now and how you noticed [00:35:35] right around 60. And 60's a really important age, by the way. I don't know if you saw the study that said there are two big [00:35:40] transitional ages.
[00:35:40] Dr. Taz: 44 is one. 40. Mm-hmm. 60. And then 60 is the other one. So at 60 you started [00:35:45] noticing changes. You had already been raw. What did you have to dial back into? [00:35:50]
[00:35:50] Carol Alt: Um, it wasn't that. It, what, what it really was is I noticed [00:35:55] most of my girlfriends complaining about it. Mm. So I had girlfriends calling me [00:36:00] up saying, "Oh my gosh, I hit 60 and where'd my energy go?
[00:36:03] Carol Alt: At 20 I didn't mind running [00:36:05] downtown and filing this brief, but now it's like I'm 60, I don't wanna be doing this." You know, for [00:36:10] me, um, my priorities changed a lot. I became way more spiritual. I [00:36:15] became less, I don't know, um, aggressive with stuff. I w- I wanna do [00:36:20] things with people who are happy and fun- Mm
[00:36:22] Carol Alt: and enjoying what they're doing. [00:36:25] I don't wanna waste my time with nasty, angry people anymore. Right. I mean, I spent my whole life around those kind of [00:36:30] people. I, I just don't wanna do it anymore. But I did notice, uh, a little on my skin, [00:36:35] so I went, "Okay, what rebuilds skin? Oils." So I upped [00:36:40] my oils. Um, you know, the doctor said don't do any more raw because I was already [00:36:45] swinging that way, so I just keep nutritioning.
[00:36:47] Dr. Taz: So you do... What type of oils do you [00:36:50] like to use?
[00:36:50] Carol Alt: I love The Oros Choice. Right. And, uh, I hand carry my cold pressed olive [00:36:55] oils back from Italy.
[00:36:56] Dr. Taz: You do? Mm-hmm. It's different.
[00:36:57] Carol Alt: Mm-hmm.
[00:36:58] Dr. Taz: They're so d- why is it different? [00:37:00]
[00:37:00] Carol Alt: First of all, I don't think the Italians are stupid enough to give us their first cold [00:37:05] pressed.
[00:37:05] Carol Alt: I think they just- It is
[00:37:06] Dr. Taz: so d-
[00:37:06] Carol Alt: Way older ... every
[00:37:07] Dr. Taz: time I go there, it's completely different.
[00:37:08] Carol Alt: You know? But- Well, I think [00:37:10] airplane, you know, pressure changes things. But, um- [00:37:15] Also, I think that a, a lot of companies, and you gotta be very careful. What I do is I take my [00:37:20] olive oil, if I have to buy it here, if I've run out, um, I usually [00:37:25] like Bragg's, they, they're usually pretty good except they have it in a clear bottle.
[00:37:28] Carol Alt: It should always be in a green bottle to [00:37:30] block the sun. Mm-hmm. But I throw it in the refrigerator.
[00:37:32] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:37:32] Carol Alt: And if after three or four days it doesn't get [00:37:35] slush, you know, like it doesn't- Yeah ... solidify, not frozen, but that, the, then, um, [00:37:40] whatever oil's rise to the top is the junk oil that they're cutting it with.
[00:37:44] Carol Alt: So you always have [00:37:45] to be careful with your olive oil, and just don't open it, throw it in the refrigerator, and [00:37:50] make sure that it all slushes.
[00:37:51] Dr. Taz: Oh, that's a great hack.
[00:37:53] Carol Alt: Yeah.
[00:37:53] Dr. Taz: So put it in the refrigerator.
[00:37:54] Carol Alt: Mm-hmm. [00:37:55]
[00:37:55] Dr. Taz: Keep it there for a few days.
[00:37:56] Carol Alt: Yeah.
[00:37:56] Dr. Taz: And whatever comes to the top-
[00:37:58] Carol Alt: Yeah, if, if, if anything, it shouldn't have [00:38:00] anything
[00:38:00] Carol Alt: should, nothing should come to the top. Yeah Olive oil should not be left in the refrigerator. I mean, you could freeze it- Right. Right ... and, and hold [00:38:05] onto it.
[00:38:05] Dr. Taz: Right.
[00:38:05] Carol Alt: But it, y- it's not an oil that needs to be refrigerated. You could leave it on [00:38:10] your counter, as you know.
[00:38:11] Dr. Taz: Right.
[00:38:11] Carol Alt: Right. Udo's Choice has to be in the f- refrigerator, [00:38:15] and it doesn't slush.
[00:38:16] Carol Alt: Mm. So if y- if they're cutting your olive [00:38:20] oil with any kind of other oils, any seed oils or nut oils, they [00:38:25] don't slush.
[00:38:26] Dr. Taz: Mm.
[00:38:26] Carol Alt: So they'll rise to the top, and then you know that your olive oil's [00:38:30] been cut- It's been cut ... with seeds or nuts.
[00:38:31] Dr. Taz: Gotcha.
[00:38:32] Carol Alt: So- Is
[00:38:32] Dr. Taz: olive oil your favorite oil?
[00:38:34] Carol Alt: Love it.
[00:38:34] Dr. Taz: What about [00:38:35] ghee?
[00:38:35] Carol Alt: I put it on my skin.
[00:38:36] Carol Alt: I love olive oil. I put it, I mean, I-
[00:38:37] Dr. Taz: Yeah ...
[00:38:38] Carol Alt: I do my liver cleanses with [00:38:40]
[00:38:40] Dr. Taz: it. What, what's your take on, like, the saturated oils or the medium chain oils, [00:38:45] like coconut oil or ghee or beef tallow is trending right now. [00:38:50] What's your, what's your take on all that stuff?
[00:38:51] Carol Alt: Well, like I said, the closer you can eat to God.
[00:38:54] Dr. Taz: Yeah.
[00:38:54] Carol Alt: That's, [00:38:55] that's really what I look at, and I do like, uh, unrefined- [00:39:00] Coconut oil. I used to drink an amazing drink that's in my first book, Eating in the Raw, with the green [00:39:05] powders and, um-
[00:39:06] Dr. Taz: I think I read that book. Mmm. I did.
[00:39:09] Carol Alt: Like, everybody in the [00:39:10] world- Yeah ... read that book. Yeah. I'm so grateful because it was, you know, not me.
[00:39:13] Dr. Taz: What year was that?
[00:39:14] Carol Alt: It was, uh, [00:39:15] 2005.
[00:39:15] Dr. Taz: Yeah, I read that book.
[00:39:17] Carol Alt: Yeah. I
[00:39:17] Dr. Taz: loved it.
[00:39:17] Carol Alt: I mean, I, I owed a big one for saving my [00:39:20] life.
[00:39:20] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:39:20] Carol Alt: So, um, y- you know, we, we, it was this amazing drink with, with, uh, [00:39:25] young coconut and, I mean, it was just so good. Yeah. And then one day, I just couldn't drink it [00:39:30] anymore. Mm-hmm. I had just saturated to the point where I was good and moved on, you know?
[00:39:34] Carol Alt: [00:39:35] And your body will tell you when all of a sudden- Right ... you go like, "I can't even look at that green drink that I had four of [00:39:40] yesterday, you know? I can't even look at it."
[00:39:41] Dr. Taz: So the oils are a beauty hack. Mm. What, what else?
[00:39:44] Carol Alt: [00:39:45] Water.
[00:39:45] Dr. Taz: Going raw, oils, water.
[00:39:46] Carol Alt: I use... The only other way I could think of [00:39:50] somebody, you know, with any kind of, um, uh, inflammatory issues, uh, [00:39:55] is, you know, I always say Essentia because it's a 9.5.
[00:39:59] Carol Alt: Mm-hmm. I have my own [00:40:00] system where I make my own alkaline water, but-
[00:40:02] Dr. Taz: Wait, how do you do that?
[00:40:03] Carol Alt: Um, y- you know, it, it- We
[00:40:04] Dr. Taz: need to be in [00:40:05] the kitchen for this. Yeah. Where are we, why are we in a studio? We need to be in a kitchen, like, mixing things
[00:40:09] Carol Alt: and doing things. I know, I [00:40:10] know. Yeah. There you
[00:40:10] Dr. Taz: go.
[00:40:11] Carol Alt: Um, well, it's a machine.
[00:40:12] Carol Alt: Okay. So we got... You know, I, I filter my water, and it's under the [00:40:15] sink, so I don't have to carry bottles of water. You don't have to do all that. Okay. No. I call my girlfriends. I'm like, "Listen, for two [00:40:20] grand, you don't ever have to carry a bottle of water again, you know?" Yeah. "You can just make your own water."
[00:40:23] Dr. Taz: Yeah.
[00:40:23] Carol Alt: But if, [00:40:25] if you're going to do it, if you're going to, you know, if you can't do that and you can't afford that, 'cause I [00:40:30] understand what kind of s- you know, d- Right ... what, I, I, I get what the sign of the times are. [00:40:35] Um, Essentia water is, is a 9.5, and that's [00:40:40] alkaline.
[00:40:40] Dr. Taz: Okay.
[00:40:40] Carol Alt: So, you know, like we talked before, 4 or 5.5- Right
[00:40:43] Carol Alt: or under, uh, [00:40:45] 7.0 is m- more of the acidic, and 7.0 and up to [00:40:50] 8.0 is more of the alkaline. So this is, like, a 9.5. [00:40:55] So-
[00:40:55] Dr. Taz: When people are grabbing bottles of water, you know, off the grocery store shelf or getting [00:41:00] water at a restaurant, what's wrong with that water?
[00:41:03] Carol Alt: Well, usually it's in a plastic bottle. I [00:41:05] always like to go for glass bottles.
[00:41:05] Carol Alt: Glass and aluminum. Yeah. Which is- Yeah ... usually why I carry my own.
[00:41:08] Dr. Taz: Yeah.
[00:41:09] Carol Alt: I didn't carry it [00:41:10] here. I see we got plastic bottles, but- I
[00:41:11] Dr. Taz: know.
[00:41:13] Carol Alt: You know, you gotta live too.
[00:41:14] Dr. Taz: Right. Right, [00:41:15] right, right.
[00:41:15] Carol Alt: The things that I'm talking about are not things that you have to, like, I can't have water- 100%, [00:41:20] right ... because it's in g-
[00:41:21] Dr. Taz: Right.
[00:41:21] Carol Alt: I, it's what you do most of the time. [00:41:25] That gives the body its benefit or its detriment.
[00:41:28] Dr. Taz: Mm.
[00:41:29] Carol Alt: It's what you do [00:41:30] most of the time. So these are the things I aim for most of the [00:41:35] time, and sometimes I'm a real jerk about it.
[00:41:37] Dr. Taz: Right. You're on- Or- ... the bus, you're off the bus sometimes,
[00:41:39] Carol Alt: [00:41:40] right? Right. Yeah, yeah. I get into the restaurant, my girlfriends are like, "Okay, do you have your olive oil and your salt with you?"
[00:41:43] Carol Alt: I'm like, "Of course I [00:41:45]
[00:41:45] Dr. Taz: do." So you bring that to the restaurant?
[00:41:46] Carol Alt: I do. Wait, what are you- Carry a bag anyway ...
[00:41:48] Dr. Taz: wait, what are you doing with it? What are you doing with the [00:41:50] olive oil? What are you doing?
[00:41:50] Carol Alt: I know no matter what restaurant I go to with my olive oil and salt, I can eat
[00:41:54] Dr. Taz: [00:41:55] something.
[00:41:55] Carol Alt: Yeah, I can have a salad.
[00:41:57] Dr. Taz: And you put it on top. Gotcha. Will you [00:42:00] eat the bread at the restaurant? No. Do you make
[00:42:02] Carol Alt: bread? And I'm a bread eater.
[00:42:04] Dr. Taz: Is there [00:42:05] raw bread?
[00:42:05] Carol Alt: There's, um, sprouted bread.
[00:42:07] Dr. Taz: Okay.
[00:42:08] Carol Alt: Yeah, sprouted, raw breads. Yeah. Um, Manna bread [00:42:10] used to be raw. Ezekiel bread used to be raw. Now I call it, like, a bridge [00:42:15] food. Mm. So it's got great ingredients, but in order to keep up with its [00:42:20] popularity, they started cooking it instead of dehydrating it.
[00:42:22] Carol Alt: But I make... I mean, I make my own crackers, my [00:42:25] own breads. Y- y- I mean, it's everything you could... The h- dehydrator's the most amazing thing. It's
[00:42:29] Dr. Taz: amazing. Yeah.
[00:42:29] Carol Alt: Why not? You [00:42:30] can make anything. And my muffins, I mean- breakfast and dinner.
[00:42:34] Dr. Taz: You do [00:42:35] all of that? Okay.
[00:42:35] Carol Alt: Yeah, my friends are like, "Let's go out to dinner."
[00:42:36] Carol Alt: I'm like, "I have to have my muffin first."
[00:42:38] Dr. Taz: Oh my gosh.
[00:42:39] Carol Alt: You know? And [00:42:40] that's another trick, you know, I, I eat a muffin before I go out to dinner so I make sure I don't overeat because [00:42:45] they're so nutritiously dense that it fills you up.
[00:42:49] Dr. Taz: So what [00:42:50] I'm hearing from you, which is so fascinating to me, as somebody who has to look at [00:42:55] patients and labs and conditions and all this other stuff, right?
[00:42:58] Dr. Taz: Is that it's really [00:43:00] about optimizing your nutrition and optimizing it using raw foods because [00:43:05] they have, you know, probably ounce per ounce more nutrition than something cooked, and [00:43:10] then bringing back in that fundamental principle of gut health, where we're destroying our enzymes [00:43:15] by eating so much cooked food.
[00:43:16] Dr. Taz: That's really- That's it
[00:43:17] Carol Alt: in a nutshell ...
[00:43:18] Dr. Taz: that's really the-
[00:43:18] Carol Alt: Why didn't you say it at the top of the [00:43:20] show? Because it's so interesting. We didn't have to sit here for so long. It's so interesting. All right, we gotta do- And here, here's one more thing. Go ahead. [00:43:25] Okay?
[00:43:25] Dr. Taz: Go.
[00:43:25] Carol Alt: Because you talked about people not being able to digest stuff.
[00:43:28] Carol Alt: Right. There's plenty, [00:43:30] plenty of digestive enzymes. Where? And I still take them.
[00:43:33] Dr. Taz: What's your favorite?
[00:43:34] Carol Alt: Um, [00:43:35] you know, I get one from Klaire Labs.
[00:43:37] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:43:37] Carol Alt: K-L-A-I-R-E. We have those in our practice. Klaire Labs. Yeah. Yes. Yeah. I love [00:43:40] those. Yeah. Um, but I also do, like, you know, so many enzymes. So many enzymes. I had [00:43:45] health issues, so I'm on a huge enzyme and supplement.
[00:43:48] Carol Alt: And you know, I get my hair [00:43:50] tested- Mm-hmm ... to make sure that I'm with the right supplements. I, I'm not crazy over [00:43:55] daily, you know, one a, one a day daily vitamins- Right, right ... because you don't- I don't know how
[00:43:59] Dr. Taz: much of that people are [00:44:00] absorbing.
[00:44:00] Carol Alt: That's part of it. Yeah. Like, you might need vitamin D and I don't- Right
[00:44:03] Carol Alt: but it's in the pill, so I'm paying for it, but [00:44:05] I'm not utilizing it, you know? Right. Um, so that's why I pr- but if you're not doing anything, [00:44:10] it's better than nothing.
[00:44:11] Dr. Taz: Correct. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:44:11] Carol Alt: And, and you know, but top of the line for me is [00:44:15] the, the, you know, good water, um, doing your, your juices. Good oils. Good [00:44:20] juices.
[00:44:20] Carol Alt: Um, you know, make your, you know, sear everything, or i- if you can [00:44:25] have tartares or carpaccios, I mean, don't knock it until you tried it because everybody goes, "Eh, raw fish," [00:44:30] and but it's so delicious and there's so many ways you can- Mm-hmm ... you could cure it.
[00:44:33] Dr. Taz: Yeah.
[00:44:34] Carol Alt: Get [00:44:35] gravlox instead of smoked salmon, and they taste exactly the same.
[00:44:38] Dr. Taz: So fascinating.
[00:44:39] Carol Alt: [00:44:40] Open your brain. Open your mind. Open
[00:44:41] Dr. Taz: up. Expand the
[00:44:42] Carol Alt: universe.
[00:44:42] Dr. Taz: Well, it's kind of going back to the way we [00:44:45] used to eat, right? Closer you eat to
[00:44:46] Carol Alt: God.
[00:44:46] Dr. Taz: Like, closer we eat to God. You did bring something up and I, and I had it in my mind. [00:44:50] Ahead.
[00:44:50] Carol Alt: Sorry. I keep
[00:44:50] Dr. Taz: digressing. No, no, no. I want... No, this is fascinating to me.
[00:44:53] Dr. Taz: So you mentioned your [00:44:55] ancestry. And how they were meat eaters. How much of that do you think is playing [00:45:00] into how people should eat? It doesn't sound like you did formal testing, like the blood type diet or this or that- No ... or [00:45:05] any of those
[00:45:05] Carol Alt: other things. Well, Price Waterhouse did, did a lot of that footwork for me.
[00:45:08] Carol Alt: So, you know, he, he traveled [00:45:10] around the world, and he found that when the Eskimos ate their fermented [00:45:15] fish that they had left in the ice for months and came back and ate it, they were totally [00:45:20] healthy. No cancer, no inflammatory disease, nothing, because that's what they were used to eating. That's what their [00:45:25] bodies were used to digesting, and it was perfect.
[00:45:27] Carol Alt: But the minute that we introduced our, you [00:45:30] know, carbo-heavy diet- Right ... with the g- heavy grains and whatnot that were cooked and, you know, [00:45:35] basically homogenized, and, and i- t- he, they, they got very [00:45:40] sick. And then he traveled down to the rainforest where people were, you know, a mile [00:45:45] from a river and didn't even know the river was there 'cause the Amazon jungle was so thick, and they were digging up tubular [00:45:50] plants, and they could only eat plants.
[00:45:51] Carol Alt: They couldn't have the fish- Mm-hmm ... an, that was fermented. They couldn't ha- [00:45:55] they ate all vegetables, and the minute you introduced fish or grains to [00:46:00] them, they became- They got sick, yeah ...
[00:46:01] Dr. Taz: sick. Yeah.
[00:46:02] Carol Alt: And so he traveled around the world looking [00:46:05] at the different places and how they ate, and the effect of modernization on all of [00:46:10] these indigenous peoples and on all these different countries and all these different eth- [00:46:15] ethnicities.
[00:46:15] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:46:15] Carol Alt: And he found that the closer you could eat to your ancestor ... Now, the [00:46:20] problem with that is that in, like, the 1950s and ... I would say more like the [00:46:25] 1950s, we started moving. We s- we, we became less of a [00:46:30] farming community-
[00:46:30] Dr. Taz: Right ...
[00:46:31] Carol Alt: where you drank the milk right from the cow, and you made your own cheese and your own cream, [00:46:35] and, and you, they, we moved to the cities.
[00:46:37] Carol Alt: So we had to cook all these things [00:46:40] to kill the enzymes so they would last on the shelf of a supermarket until we bought it.
[00:46:44] Dr. Taz: [00:46:45] Right.
[00:46:45] Carol Alt: So our food changed. So when people say to me, "Eh, but in the Bible [00:46:50] they ate bread," well, yeah. Hello, they didn't go through a dust bowl-
[00:46:53] Dr. Taz: Right ...
[00:46:54] Carol Alt: so that they [00:46:55] made, you know, a super seed that didn't, you know Die [00:47:00] in the, in dust or with, with, you know, insects.
[00:47:03] Carol Alt: Uh, yes, you have to [00:47:05] look at what happened between the Bible and now to our food. And we [00:47:10] pasteurize, and we, we y- hybrid- Right ... and we genetically [00:47:15] modify, and we do all these things to our- That's why we're sick ... our food. And I keep [00:47:20] saying, "The closer you eat to God," that doesn't mean hybrided or [00:47:25] genetically modified.
[00:47:26] Carol Alt: And it's, it's getting harder and harder, I absolutely admit that, [00:47:30] but I have a better edge than most of my compatriots because [00:47:35] I'm aiming for that nutrition every day. I'm not aiming [00:47:40] to go like, "Oh, let's have, you know, with like, you know, cigarettes and [00:47:45] alcohol because I feel like it."
[00:47:46] Dr. Taz: Right. And,
[00:47:47] Carol Alt: you know, "I wanna live my life."
[00:47:48] Carol Alt: I'm, I'm like, [00:47:50] "I wanna live a healthy life."
[00:47:52] Dr. Taz: How do we... You know, I call this show Whole Plus, [00:47:55] 'cause I'm passionate about holistic medicine, but I talk about the merging of science and spirit.
[00:47:59] Carol Alt: Mm-hmm. [00:48:00]
[00:48:00] Dr. Taz: How do we tap into that spirituality in terms [00:48:05] of, you know, using it to choose what we put in our mouth? [00:48:10]
[00:48:10] Carol Alt: I always, uh, it, it's always so crazy to me that when I slow [00:48:15] down the monkey mind enough-
[00:48:17] Dr. Taz: Stops, yeah
[00:48:18] Carol Alt: you, you [00:48:20] usually end up aiming differently. [00:48:25] Does that make sense?
[00:48:25] Dr. Taz: Totally.
[00:48:26] Carol Alt: Like, I know what's right for me, [00:48:30] but sometimes you're tired, or you're hungry, or... And, and you [00:48:35] aim for the wrong stuff because you're listening to your mind, y- your stomach, and you're not [00:48:40] thinking.
[00:48:41] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm.
[00:48:41] Carol Alt: So you have to slow down enough [00:48:45] to think what's right.
[00:48:48] Dr. Taz: Mm.
[00:48:49] Carol Alt: And that's what you [00:48:50] aim for. I mean, spirituality was something that [00:48:55] came to me The more clean I [00:49:00] got, and I'm not talking religion
[00:49:02] Dr. Taz: I hear so many people say that, though. I've [00:49:05] heard that many times before. Yeah
[00:49:05] Carol Alt: Yeah Because, you know, when, when so much is going on with the body, it's like you get, uh, [00:49:10] too many mixed signals, I think.
[00:49:11] Carol Alt: I mean, you know, this is all my own personal opinion. Mm-hmm. But, hey, I [00:49:15] look damn good for 90, so I figure that these things really work- Yeah ... you know?
[00:49:18] Dr. Taz: Absolutely.
[00:49:19] Carol Alt: Yeah. [00:49:20] I want everybody to look this good at 90.
[00:49:21] Dr. Taz: Well, speaking of looking good, we've talked about water [00:49:25] and oils and vegetable juicing. And
[00:49:27] Carol Alt: digestive enzymes.
[00:49:28] Dr. Taz: And digestive [00:49:30] enzymes, so that's a lot. And nutrition. Everyone can run with that, and then you can look like this, so. [00:49:35] I wish it was that simple, but you know, all joking aside, what are [00:49:40] your favorite beauty treatments, beauty products that you can't live without? You don't have to give us the whole [00:49:45] thing, but you do look amazing.
[00:49:46] Dr. Taz: No, oh,
[00:49:46] Carol Alt: yeah, water and oil.
[00:49:47] Dr. Taz: Water and oil. Is there anything else?
[00:49:49] Carol Alt: No, that's [00:49:50] pretty much it.
[00:49:51] Dr. Taz: Water and oil, guys. It- You heard it from her. Y- y-
[00:49:53] Carol Alt: yeah, I mean, yeah. [00:49:55]
[00:49:55] Dr. Taz: I mean, it is beauty from the inside out, right? At the end of the day, I think that how we take [00:50:00] care of ourselves, you know, how we feel about ourselves, how we live our lives- But you [00:50:05] gotta
[00:50:05] Carol Alt: remember one thing
[00:50:05] Carol Alt: all of that ... anything you put on your skin gets absorbed into the skin. Absolutely. So you g- you wanna read it. [00:50:10] You know, I, I have other products I use. Right. I'm very careful about reading ingredients.
[00:50:14] Dr. Taz: [00:50:15] Ingredients, so watching the toxic load and things
[00:50:17] Carol Alt: like
[00:50:17] Dr. Taz: that. Mm-hmm, oh, yeah. What's next for you?
[00:50:19] Carol Alt: [00:50:20] Well, I mean, I, I don't know.
[00:50:21] Carol Alt: I guess I'm still doing the same old, same old, you know? I'm, I have two movies that [00:50:25] I'm s- I start one at the end of May, and I have another one- Amazing ... tentatively slated for September, [00:50:30] so, uh, yeah.
[00:50:30] Dr. Taz: No slowing down.
[00:50:32] Carol Alt: Um, I hope not. That's why I eat really raw, so I can keep up my [00:50:35] energy.
[00:50:35] Dr. Taz: That's why we eat raw.
[00:50:35] Dr. Taz: I mean, what about books, or any other books coming
[00:50:39] Carol Alt: out? You know, I [00:50:40] wrote five books, uh, on health and nutrition. Two were, uh, you know, [00:50:45] fiction, but- I think I said all I need to say.
[00:50:48] Dr. Taz: Yeah.
[00:50:49] Carol Alt: But at the end of [00:50:50] the day, I, I'm just trying to pay it forward. That's why I accepted your invitation here. I'm just [00:50:55] trying to pay it forward, because I had some really amazing people who helped me in my time of [00:51:00] desperation and need.
[00:51:01] Carol Alt: And, and don't, don't let me, you know, don't let anybody fool you. [00:51:05]
[00:51:05] Dr. Taz: Yeah.
[00:51:05] Carol Alt: Everybody has those dark days.
[00:51:07] Dr. Taz: Yeah.
[00:51:07] Carol Alt: It does- Absolutely ... it's not easy down here [00:51:10] for anybody.
[00:51:11] Dr. Taz: What would you say to young people today? [00:51:15] What's one piece of advice, maybe young girls, maybe people in the modeling [00:51:20] industry. We've had others that have- You're
[00:51:20] Carol Alt: not a sheep.
[00:51:21] Carol Alt: Don't follow the pack.
[00:51:22] Dr. Taz: Ooh, like that. I like that a lot. [00:51:25]
[00:51:25] Carol Alt: Yeah. Don't follow the pack. Everybody runs for quick fixes. There's no quick [00:51:30] fix. You wanna look good in your olden days. You know, I thought it'd be really great to have an [00:51:35] app-
[00:51:35] Dr. Taz: Mm-hmm ...
[00:51:35] Carol Alt: that tells you what you would look like if you were, you know, here you are at 15 if you drink.[00:51:40]
[00:51:40] Dr. Taz: Oh my God- If
[00:51:40] Carol Alt: you smoke ...
[00:51:42] Dr. Taz: we need to do that. I would hand that out.
[00:51:43] Carol Alt: If you eat healthy. [00:51:45] And you could- That would
[00:51:45] Dr. Taz: motivate everybody.
[00:51:46] Carol Alt: Well, because, you know- Yeah ... I always wonder, like I, you see some of these people and you [00:51:50] go like, "Wow, if their 15-year-old self could look at them now."
[00:51:54] Dr. Taz: Right.
[00:51:54] Carol Alt: [00:51:55] You're trying to be so cool in high school, and then you allow this to happen?
[00:51:59] Dr. Taz: I hope everybody [00:52:00] hears that. I think that, I think that is so important. Like- I
[00:52:02] Carol Alt: think that's, that's a lot of hubris on my part I [00:52:05] think. But, um, you know, you just, you, I, I just want [00:52:10] everybody to feel good and everybody to be happy, 'cause it would make for a much happier world [00:52:15] and I'd be much happier walking out my front door.
[00:52:16] Carol Alt: So it's a really selfish- Selfish motivation ... selfish [00:52:20] motivation- At
[00:52:20] Dr. Taz: the end,
[00:52:21] Carol Alt: at the end of it ... at the end of the day. I love it. You know? And they'll treat their animals better, which is [00:52:25] really my motivation.
[00:52:26] Dr. Taz: Oh, I love that. Well, I'm gonna leave you with one final question.
[00:52:29] Carol Alt: [00:52:30] Okay.
[00:52:30] Dr. Taz: What makes you whole?
[00:52:33] Carol Alt: Oh my gosh, so many things make [00:52:35] me whole.
[00:52:36] Carol Alt: Um, I have a great teaching Bible, can't start my day [00:52:40] without reading it. It's just fantastic. It really puts things in perspective.
