The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

As broadcast September 20, 2023 with plenty of independent-leaning and foreward-thinking vibes throughout.  Tonight we headed for Hamburg for a sampling of the audioscape of one of Germany's most interesting and industrial areas.  Traditionally the port of greater Germany, the city is notable for its exposure to cultures, products, and sounds that you won't find in other places around this European powerhouse of democracy.  Shouts to all the Hamburgers!

Facts
Sugar Pie DeSanto – The Woo-Pee
- A tribute to the famed 90’s club Mojo to start off the show tonight.
- Located on the city’s famous Reeperbahn. Founded in 1989, it is considered to be a pioneer in the field of modern breakbeat-oriented sounds such as acid jazz and had a major impact on dancefloor jazz.
Roisin Murphy & DJ Koze – CooCool
- Great team-up here between two of the world’s most tasteful electronic artists, with the former being the self-described “reigning Irish queen of electropop,” and the latter being an incredible DJ out of Hamburg.
- Murphy first got fame back in the 1990’s as part of the UK duo Moloko, who were a chart-topping phenomenon for over a decade, and Murphy has continued this on the solo tip for many years now as well, proving a lasting influence with fans having put out several successful solo LP’s.
LANNÉ - One In A Million
- LANNÉ, a DJ/Production duo from Hamburg, Germany, is known for successful original tracks and dance covers, including a remix of Laidback Luke's "Rolling Stone" with over 100 million Spotify streams.
Udo Lindenberg - Sonderzug nach Pankow
- An iconic singer-songwriter known for his signature hat, sunglasses, and mumble, pioneered a unique blend of German rock in the 1970s.
- In the 1980s, he turned to political themes, notably with his song "Sonderzug nach Pankow," a mocking letter to East German leader Erich Honecker. Today, he's a successful painter and a role model for younger musicians.
Chris Evans & David Hanselman – Salisbury Plain
- Some pretty epic prog rock to end this part tonight, this being from a collab album put out in 1980 called STONEHENGE.
- Chris Evans as you may have guessed is not German, but from England, and was based in Hamburg most of his life which sadly ended last year.
- Evans was more well known as a producer, having scored a host of famous albums, but most notably having scored even more film soundtracks over the years.

- "Hamburg, meine Perle" is a beloved love song dedicated to the city of Hamburg, a place that has inspired various artists.
Rhonda – Camera
- In 2013, Rhonda, a five-member band, made waves in Hamburg's music scene with their retro-soul sound.
- Lead singer Milo Milone is often compared to Amy Winehouse, Duffy, and Adele due to her distinctive raspy voice and punk-infused 60s soul
Tocotronic - Mein Ruin
- Tocotronic is a German rock band formed in 1993. Tocotronic not only innovated German language rock music, but also inspired a number of later bands, such as Wir sind Helden.
- Their influence on pop culture is widespread, from fashion to the playful and weird look of their early records.
Tocotronic – Hi Freaks
Agajon – so simple
- This is a tune put out last year on the Afghan-German rapper’s album nag champa, which was the artist’s debut.
- AgaJon made a name for himself with his own take on hip-hop, bringing together a mix of neo-soul, jazz, and classic hip-hop for artists such as Jay Prince, Giggs, and Selah Sue before issuing his own debut.
- Hamburg and Germany generally nowadays are famously welcoming to refugees, most notably one of my favorite football teams who are based in Hamburg, FC St. Pauli, who are militantly anti-racist and actively assist acclimatizing immigrants and refugees in the city.
Samy Deluxe – ASD Track
- Man, is this tune a bump and a half, put out this year with Afrob as a featured artist.
- Samy is a Hamburg-based producer, rapper, and DJ who’s often garnered comparisons with Jay-Z both for the music stylings and the self-made narrative.

Part 3

Herrenmagazin – Fruher war ich meistens traurig
Jan Delay - Liebe

Facts
BOY - We Were Here

Neonschwarz - Das goldene Ticket
- Neonschwarz represents the modern era. After their 2010 hit "On A Journey," they released their debut album "Fliegende Fische" four years later.
- Their new album "Metropolis" explores urban life challenges demonstrating that patience pays off in the world of music.
Kante – Zombi
- And in our favorite google search of the week, we come up with this band, and this is a standalone single from 2004.
- The band does not count world famous footballer Ngolo Kante amongst its ranks, so maybe somebody can send the memo to google HQ. Over the years, the band put out 6 albums, but it seems they stayed mainly a local phenomenon in Central Europe.
Herrenmagazin – Fruher war ich meistens Traurig (I Used to be sad most of the time)
- From a 2008 album called Atzelgift (Atzel poison), there’s a super dark undertone to that title as it has this clean cut young man serving cake to a couple of older ladies.
- The band were founded in 2004, and this release vaulted them to a national prominence at the time, put out by Berlin-based label Motor Music.
Jan Delay – Liebe
- Jan Delay, known for his unique nasal voice, rose to fame in the 90s with "Absolute Beginner" before embarking on a solo journey into funk and soul.
- His national breakthrough came in 2006 with the album "Mercedes Dance." Recently, he released the rock album "Hammer & Michel," playfully referencing Hamburg's Michaelis Church, all while sporting his signature elegant suit.

- Of course, you have to love the play on words here and the double meaning depending on the language that you’re speaking.
- Peggy Gou, raised in S Korea, educated in Europe has resided in Germany for years & years now, and actually when she graduated from university her parents almost disowned her when she took a job at a record store so that she could DJ.
