In the opening of Vayigash, we dive straight into the tension-filled scene where Judah steps forward to speak to Joseph, whom he does not recognize as his brother. Judah approaches with a combination of humility and strength, setting the stage for a pivotal moment of truth and reconciliation.
Rashi, always attentive to nuance, suggests Judah's careful approach, respectful yet assertive, is aimed at preventing an escalation that might lead to conflict. He is ready to stand up for Benjamin, but also seeks to avoid confrontation.
The question about personal inquiries is indeed puzzling. Joseph's probing questions about the family seem unusual for a mere grain purchase. When the brothers say that Benjamin's brother died, they refer to Joseph, not knowing he stands before them. They speak from their perspective, assuming Joseph is no longer alive.
