Venezuela is reeling after twin 7.2- and 7.5-magnitude earthquakes struck the country’s north, leaving nearly 2,000 people dead and deepening a nation already battered by years of crisis. Jankiel Rosenwald of World Vision, who was in Caracas when the quake hit, said, “I made sure my family was in a safe space and then began helping those around me,” including rescuing a woman trapped in her apartment. He described scenes of panic, with families sleeping in public squares and children being pulled from rubble separated from missing parents. Rosenwald warned, “It’s been really devastating,” as aftershocks fuel fear and the health system strains under shortages, waste, and unsafe buildings. Through its “Hope Without Borders” church network, World Vision is expanding food, water, shelter, medical aid, and child-friendly spaces, urging “all hands on deck” for Venezuela’s recovery.

Gospel music star Kirk Franklin was involved in a tense confrontation in Philadelphia after a street preacher known online as Judge James Thomas, or “The Sin Police,” accused him of misleading Christians and declared, “You and your wife are going to Hell.” Video shared by Larry Reid shows Franklin, 56, growing visibly upset and being restrained by security after replying, “That’s not what I said.” The clash centered on Franklin’s controversial 2022 BET Hip-Hop Awards freestyle, when critics said he claimed “the lion and the lamb will bow down to the goat.” Franklin later clarified he meant “G.O.A.T.,” saying, “It’s hyperbole, not theology.” Franklin had been in Philadelphia for the Wawa Welcome America festival, though his performance was canceled by lightning. Thomas later defended mentioning Tammy Franklin, invoking Ananias and Sapphira.

On Capitol Hill, a House hearing on sanctuary city policies turned deeply personal as Jessica Gorman, mother of 18-year-old Loyola University freshman Sheridan Gorman, blamed failed immigration enforcement for her daughter’s March 19 killing. Fighting back emotion, Gorman told lawmakers, “My daughter paid for those failures — your failures — with her life,” and demanded, “Why does my child matter less than an illegal immigrant?” She said the suspect, Jose Medina of Venezuela, had entered the U.S. illegally and “should not have even been in this country,” arguing that Chicago’s sanctuary policies and leaders who “refuse to cooperate with ICE ... sent her to her grave.” Rep. Mike Lawler said Medina was apprehended at the border in 2023, released, then later arrested for shoplifting in Chicago when he “should have been deported.” Gorman added, “There’s no but when your child is in a coffin.”

Churchome pastor Judah Smith is opening up about his long friendship with Justin Bieber, saying on Lecrae’s “Deep End” podcast that the pop star has deepened his own faith. “I have learned more about Jesus and more about God from Justin Bieber than I’ve ever taught him,” Smith said, explaining that fame brings “an acute pressure and pain.” He added, “That level of fandom and celebrity… is not meant for a man,” calling Bieber’s honesty about weakness a sign of authentic faith. Smith, who officiated Justin and Hailey Bieber’s 2019 wedding and later baptized the couple, said of the singer, “I just love him. He means the world to me.” Bieber has also spoken publicly about Christianity, declaring in a livestream, “God says you are” worthy of love, and praising Jesus as “the wonderful Savior.”

Texas has become the first U.S. state to approve a required public school reading list that includes Bible passages, with the State Board of Education voting 9 to 5 to adopt the curriculum for more than 5 million students beginning in 2030. The list includes selections from Job, Ecclesiastes, Luke, and 1 Corinthians, alongside authors like Shakespeare, Dickens, and Jane Austen. Americans United for Separation of Church and State, led by Rachel Laser, blasted the move as “yet another example of Texas politicians pushing Christianity on public schoolchildren.” Supporters praised it as essential to teaching history, with Texas Values’ Mary Elizabeth Castle saying, “If we want students to understand our American story, we have to stop cutting chapters out of the book.” Family Research Council’s David Closson called the Bible “the most influential book in Western history.”

Fort Worth police say they will “look into” a viral confrontation at Trinity Pride Fest after video appeared to show an officer warning Christian street preachers they could be cited if their speech offended someone. Evangelist Rich Penkoski and David Grisham said officers blocked them from a public sidewalk at the June 27 event, and an unidentified female officer was heard saying, “If someone is offended by your talking, then we have a problem,” and, “I will write you a ticket.” When Penkoski asked, “You’re going to ticket us for offensive speech?” the officer replied, “Yes, absolutely,” calling it disorderly conduct. Grisham was later cited for “unreasonable noise.” A department spokesman said Fort Worth police are “committed to protecting the constitutional rights of all individuals” while reviewing the incident.
