Art, in all the wrong places

A public service announcement about gambling harm, aimed at migrant women. The presenter knows the script. She's less sure about the conclusion.

Part of my ongoing series of weird public announcements.

Created for Sonic Dash, a biannual 48-hour audio competition run by Silver Sound (New York): an original piece, under two minutes, made entirely from scratch in 48 hours in response to an emailed prompt. No archival material, no AI, no pre-existing music. Summer 2026 prompt: Going for broke.

What is Art, in all the wrong places?

Characters who can't always be trusted. Because they often don't see the difference between sound and noise, between countryside and abandoned building, between fiction and reality.
I explore sound, speak languages and talk to strangers. This is my work.

This is a message for women in our communities.

Women who came here, or whose mothers came here,

carrying everything they had.

Working double shifts.

Sending money home.

Keeping it together.

Gambling is not for you.

It was never designed for you.

The machines don't care where you're from.

The odds don't adjust for sacrifice.

You will lose. Statistically. Reliably.

You will lose.

If someone you know has a gambling problem,

call...

There's a number. I'll give it to you at the end.

Gambling destroys what took years to build.

It targets loneliness.

And if there is one thing our communities know,

it's la solitudine.

Yes, loneliness is not in short supply.

The things about gambling, though, is that,

and this is purely informational,

is that for about 30 seconds

after you place the bet,

everything else stops.

The bills.

The second job.

The question of whether any of this

ne valeva la pena, was worth it.

30 seconds of not caring anything.

Which is not a recommendation.

That was not a recommendation.

Gambling will not solve your problems.

It will, briefly, replace them.

With a different problem.

That is, technically, a problem.

So it is a problem that involves

la speranza. Possibility.

Which is more than some situations offer.

If you, or someone you know,

if you know, if yourself,

are considering the helpline number,

is...

You can find it.

You know how to find things.

Ce l'hai fatta, no?

You found your way here.

To going for broke.

That's the name of this announcement.

If I need help.
