So now we've got a few
pieces on the table.

Movement can be force.

Direction comes from environmental
imbalance, and multiple forces

can act at the same time.

Now, here's the real question:
What happens when those

responses don't stay separate?

What happens when they
start linking together?

That's where Loeb moves into
animal conduct, and this is where

things start to feel different.

Because now we are not just talking
about movement, we are talking about

behavior, something that unfolds over
time, something that looks coordinated,

something that feels intentional.

And this is where most people draw
the line because once behavior

has multiple steps, we assume
there's planning behind it.

We assume there's a goal.

But Loeb pushes back again.

He asks, "What if behavior
is just a chain of reactions?

One trigger leads to another,
which leads to another, and

over time, that chain looks like
something purposeful, but it's not.

It's just connected responses."

So instead of asking, "What
is the animal trying to do?"

He asks, "What is triggering each step?"

And when you break behavior down
like that, something clicks.

Each part doesn't need awareness.

It just needs a condition, a trigger.

And once those triggers
line up, you get a sequence.

Loeb showed how these chains work
in the lab with simple organisms.

Change the light angle, shift gravity
with a centrifuge, or add a tiny

chemical, and the whole sequence of
movements would shift predictably.

No planning needed, just one response
creating the condition for the next.

And once you see behavior as a
sequence of linked responses, it

changes how you interpret complexity.

Because complexity doesn't have
to mean a new kind of cause.

It might just mean more steps in the
chain, more links between reactions.

Now, one thing Loeb is careful
about is not over-mystifying this.

He is not saying every behavior is simple.

What he's doing is stripping
the explanation down to what

can be observed and tested.

And from here, we start moving
into a deeper territory.

Because if simple responses can
link together into what looks like

coordinated behavior, the next question
is what happens when those chains

become highly stable and repeated?
