Presented by the Southern HIV Impact Fund at AIDS United, Reimagine the Response is a new conversational podcast centered on the response to the HIV epidemic in the U.S. South. The podcast is hosted by Marvell Terry II, senior program manager of the Southern HIV Impact Fund.
Host Marvell Terry II engages in insightful conversations with activists, community leaders, stakeholders and elected government officials about their response to the HIV epidemic in their communities across the South. This podcast is intended to communicate with decision makers on how to realign, redevelop and reimagine the South’s approach to address the HIV epidemic. This podcast is aimed at community stakeholders, funders, and those making a difference in their local community. Our listeners will hear from leaders what informs and sustains their work, and how they have responded to the HIV epidemic.
DaShawn Usher (00:05):
Hello, and welcome everyone. My name is DaShawn Usher, and I am the Director of Communities of Color and Media at GLAAD, the world's largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization. Today, I have the pleasure of talking to and chatting with my very good friend, Marvell L Terry II, who is the host of a new podcast called Reimagine the Response. Marvell, can you tell us a little bit about the podcast?
Marvell L Terry II (00:31):
The Reimagine the Response podcast is a response to our need in the South to reimagine how we're going to end this epidemic that is now at 40 years. And so. Through listening to this podcast and creating this podcast, we hear from many voices with many different perspectives and strategies, on how we can solve the HIV epidemic in the South. And so, when you think about this podcast, is really around creating strategy and being informed about the HIV epidemic in the South.
DaShawn Usher (01:04):
Yeah. And I think one of the other things that we are excited and looking forward to with this particular podcast too, is how do we reimagine joy? And so, can you talk a little bit about that too?
Marvell L Terry II (01:17):
Yeah. Joy is so exciting to talk about, because people in the South are joyful, we are resilient, we have fortitude. And what I get an opportunity to do is to talk to some amazing people across many different movements, and really try to identify the joy in their life. In addition to talking about strategy and policy stuff, is really about how do we capture that joy that exists in the South.
DaShawn Usher (01:47):
And so, when we think about what can your audience and guests expect, what do you want them to walk away with?
Marvell L Terry II (01:55):
Sure. I want them to be able to walk away with some joy, some laughter, but also some knowledge and some information. Each episode will have a policy note where individuals will find out more information around policy. Each episode will hopefully illuminate a strategy or an area that we should focus on when we talk about ending the HIV epidemic, and then that personhood, that wholeness that each person has in their lives. I think when we talk about joy, that's how we're able to capture their joy.
DaShawn Usher (02:30):
Well, thank you, Marvell. We look forward to being able to share inside of this experience with you, and on the journey with you and your guests as we reimagine the response. You can listen wherever you listen to podcasts.
