Problem Corner

Host Justin Miller steers a lively Election Day show solo (Kenny’s out of town), reminding listeners about in-person voting sites, ballot drop boxes, and Capital Transit’s free rides. He keeps the “first snowfall” guessing game going, shares Halloween safety tips (visibility, reflective gear, drive with headlights on), and spotlights station promos (Double Your Dividend; “Second Summer” keyword at 9am/2pm/5pm).
Community topics roll in: concern over numbered municipal ballots, a Sitka caller’s heartfelt talk about personal/spiritual struggles, and continued efforts to find Thumbelina—a gray Siamese polydactyl cat—missing nearly a month. Callers flag dark-weather driving without lights, rising barge/shipping costs hitting local prices, and debate jewelry tax rules and city decisions (city hall move, seasonal sales tax). Events include the Second Saturday Market at the Mendenhall Mall.
Buy/sell corner: a 2003 Ford F-150 (good parts truck) and a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder (runs; needs transmission). Jess closes urging kindness during political disagreements, winter prep (homes/boats/gardens), and one more push to vote today.

What is Problem Corner?

Problem Corner is an iconic radio show that has become a vibrant community hub. Callers engage in a wide array of discussions, ranging from local political debates to community commentary and casual advertisements for listeners looking to buy, sell, or trade personal items.
The show's rich history is marked by its association with several prominent local figures. Notably, Dennis Egan, a former mayor of Juneau, was a key personality in shaping the show's direction in the 1980s.
As a testament to its enduring relevance and appeal, "Problem Corner" has etched its name in the annals of Alaskan broadcasting history. It's not just a radio show but a cultural landmark, celebrated for being the longest-running radio show in Alaska.

Speaker 1:

Welcome to problem corner, Alaska's longest running radio show. Connect and discuss the topics important to Juneau and all of Southeast Alaska. Call (907) 586-1800, and subscribe to the podcast at kinyradio.com, powered by Princess Cruise Lines, Alaska Laundry and Dry Cleaning, and Juno Power Sports.

Speaker 2:

Hey. Good morning, Juno, KINY ninety four point nine FM and always 800. It is Tuesday problem corner, and I'm Jess Miller hanging out with y'all this Tuesday from the Gold Bell Trium Studio. I am sad that I don't have my trusty cohost with me, Kenny Solomon Gross, today, but I hope he's having a good time down south at the moment. Today is the last day to get your ballots in.

Speaker 2:

I just wanna remind folks that you could drop if you did receive it in the mail, you could drop it off at any of the ballot drop in spots, or you could vote in person at a few different locations. And the Manhattan Mall is doing it. I believe a couple churches are doing it. The Valley Library is doing in person voting. So a lot of different opportunities for you to get out there and vote.

Speaker 2:

This one's definitely a very important one for our community, so definitely get out there and get your ballots in. Tuesday, I kinda had a few different topics to kinda throw at you all today, but if anything's on your mind, on your chest, you wanna get off, feel free to give me a call at (907) 586-1800, or you could always shoot us an email by going to kinyradio.com. I do wanna keep on the theme that, I mean, Kenny started with the first snowfall prediction. So far, we've had, like, October 21 and then November 11 when the actual snow's gonna stick, and then we also had one before Halloween. So a couple predictions.

Speaker 2:

If you get close to if I'll try to keep track of this the best I can. So if your guess is close to when we actually get the first snowfall, I will make an announcement with your name on the airwaves. So definitely feel free to give give me a call if you have a prediction. Halloween's just around the corner, folks, so I'm already seeing folks in neighborhoods setting up their decorations, so super exciting times. I always enjoyed Halloween here in Juneau.

Speaker 2:

Honestly, there's always not a fear, but folks being safe out there. So always make sure your child's got a buddy if they are not with an adult or company with them with this coming Halloween. Let's hope it stays monetarily nice this Halloween. I hope the kids have a good time. It is on a Friday, so you don't have to really worry about getting your kids back home in time for bed because it is right before the weekend.

Speaker 2:

Looking at some stuff going on. Well, we did announce our second summer promotion today here on KINY and the Juno Media Center. This is your guys' chance to go somewhere pretty nice with Alaska Airlines. All you guys have to do is listen to our different word our words of the day. So tune in today at already happened at nine.

Speaker 2:

Next chance I hear that word's at two. And then if you miss that 02:00 mark, you could also hear the word at 5PM. Just submit your the word to our website, any station website, whatever you may be listening to, and you will get signed up for second summer. Yesterday, if you are a rock fan, you woke up with some pretty awesome news yesterday. Rush is Rush, the Canadian rock band Legends, if I could They are hitting the road again this coming summer.

Speaker 2:

So if you're a Rush fan, this might be your next chance to possibly see them live. Sadly, obviously, they lost their lyricist and amazing drummer Neil Peart. Huge inspiration of mine as I am also a drummer, and I've seen Rush live twice. Luckily, I was able to see him in those times in my life to see Neil Peart and all those guys. But if you still wanna see Rush, definitely, that is your chance to go check them out.

Speaker 2:

They're not really doing any locations close to Alaska, so you do have to do a little bit of traveling if you do wanna check them out. Definitely looking at some stuff happening in the capital city. I know Gold Belt is still working on their proposal for for that North Douglas spot over there. You could swing on over to kinyradio.com if you wanna see the article. This was posted on the first, so it is a little bit older article, but I'm looking at the image of their proposal of what it might be looking like, and that looks like a pretty sharp setup.

Speaker 2:

Like, I know they're planning on having a replica of a Tlingit village and, obviously, a main welcoming center and all the different things. So I think it'll be a good change as far as our Alaska culture being highlighted in such a way. So I'm I'm very optimistic our visitors a great taste of Alaska and Juneau and just our culture. So if you are interested on checking that out, I'm sure you could find some more images and kind of an idea what it may look like. Child safety.

Speaker 2:

I know that's kind of along the lines, but I've been seeing a lot of stuff pop up, especially social media about still, I've brought this up on Problem Corner many times as far as cyberbullying or even just being kind. And so I really wanna let parents know, check-in with the kids, make sure they understand on not not necessarily how to treat others, but how to treat our neighbors, treat our friends, and keep everyone safe. So I want you guys to just check-in with your kids, making sure, like, no matter what how another child may act or communicate with someone, make sure they show kindness and compassion always. Let's take a look at some emails, see if we got any new emails today. This email did come in yesterday.

Speaker 2:

This person did just move here this past summer, and they noticed graffiti on the old pier across the Marriott Hotel. There's a lot of garbage there too, and they believe there are people living in the culverts on the beach side who own their pier who who owns that pier in the land around it. They would like to know that information. But, yes, that conversation has been brought up on the program before about folks sleeping in culverts and keeping it clean, and I know JPD is working on as far as monitoring that area. We do have a call.

Speaker 2:

Let's jump right to it. Hi. Welcome to Problem Corner. You're live and on the air.

Speaker 3:

Knock knock.

Speaker 2:

Who's there?

Speaker 4:

Little old lady.

Speaker 2:

Little old lady who?

Speaker 4:

I didn't know you. You're old days. Yeah.

Speaker 5:

The first time problem corner. Dang. You should do that more often.

Speaker 2:

Oh, you yeah. You should. I I that's one thing I always try to work on with this program. And and I when I first started on your stuff, I was like, I need some jokes in my back pocket. So Yeah.

Speaker 2:

I'm glad you started with that. What's on your mind Why

Speaker 5:

don't ghosts like the rain?

Speaker 2:

Why don't ghosts like the rain? I don't know why.

Speaker 5:

Because it dampens their spirits. That's very

Speaker 2:

I like that one. That's very appropriate for the time of season that we're in right now.

Speaker 5:

Hey. Yeah. The reason I called today is because, you know, I drive a lot, and it's getting darker and darker out.

Speaker 2:

Mhmm.

Speaker 5:

So many people just are riding around without their lights on. So

Speaker 2:

Oh, yes.

Speaker 5:

Friendly reminder. Be safe. Always be defensive on your driving and turn your lights on.

Speaker 2:

And turn your lights on. I like that. You're going there.

Speaker 5:

And when somebody's flashing their lights at you like I always do, you know, and that means somebody's telling you to turn your lights on. And my wife, she always says, how can we do that so much?

Speaker 3:

And

Speaker 4:

I said, well, you know,

Speaker 5:

and she looks at me with her fluttering false eyelashes and and say, you know, might see somebody, and she looks at me again

Speaker 6:

and goes, you cat dick stupid.

Speaker 4:

No. Just kidding. Alright. Alright.

Speaker 2:

Thanks for your call, mister. Always appreciate hearing from you. You have a good one. Yes. I like that reminder.

Speaker 2:

It is getting dark. It's getting wet, and I'm already like, everyone sees differently. You gotta remember that. You gotta keep that in mind. Everyone sees differently.

Speaker 2:

People have eyesight issues. People can't see in the dark very well. When it's wet and dark out, it even makes it even harder. So, yes, put your lights on. Check your lights.

Speaker 2:

Make sure your turn signals work. Your may your high beams work. I also need to swing by Napa or auto parts store and get myself a new replacement because I actually do have one headlight out, and so I wanna be sure I am being visible on the road. So, yes, this is your reminder. Check your lights.

Speaker 2:

I've I've been seeing a lot of cars driving around with one headlight lately, so this is a good reminder. Check your headlights. We are getting darker. It's getting wet. It's getting harder to see.

Speaker 2:

So please check your lights. Make sure you are visible on the road. And that kinda shifts right back to child safety because kids are walking the streets. Obviously, as we are getting darker, kids get out of school when it's kinda getting dark, whether it be in the middle school or high school. And not everyone wears reflective clothing.

Speaker 2:

So, yes, be sure you're vigilant, you are aware, especially driving through school zones or any area where kids may be walking home from school or to school, cause we are getting darker. The mornings are gonna get dark. So, yes, if your child does not have some sort of reflective thing, maybe try finding some sort of flashing light that you could get on them just so you're a little visible. I did get an email from a concerned voter. Let's read this.

Speaker 2:

They voted today in person, and they cannot understand why the ballots are numbered. I did not feel like my vote was anonymous. Why is it only the city that wants to track our votes with the name on the envelope and numbered? When I vote for state elections and elect national elections, they do not number our ballots. What is wrong with this town?

Speaker 2:

Kind of at the tail end. I'm not too familiar I'm not too sure if I had the answer to why they have our names on them, but I also saw that too when I was filling out my ballot that my name was on it. So I don't know if they need that to somehow track that you are a local citizen, that you have voted for it, or just to check that your vote your ballot was counted for. Because if it was mailed into you, then, yeah, it is a little more direct. But they did vote in person, so that might be a little bit different.

Speaker 2:

I sadly do not have the answer to that question, but if someone does, feel free to give me a call at (907) 586-1800 or even shoot me an email at k I n y radio dot com. I've already kind of blown through all my topics today. I was kind of now I'm just keeping it light, but I was definitely wanting folks to call in today with what's on your mind, especially as we are nearing the official fall start. It is officially fall. Leads are changing and are happening.

Speaker 2:

So, yeah, it's crazy. It is wild. Let's look at some events going on here in the capital city. So the second Saturday market at the Minnehull Mall is kicking off this coming Saturday. Obviously, it's always the second Saturday of the month.

Speaker 2:

So definitely join in. It's a lot family fun, family friendly. There's gonna be locally made treasures, fresh baked treats, one of a kind finds. It might be time to get your Christmas shopping in early, and I know I need to start jumping on that and get ahead of the game so I'm not scrambling at the last second for holiday shopping. And we do got a call.

Speaker 2:

Let's get him on the show. Hi. Welcome to Problem Corner. You're live and on the air.

Speaker 4:

Hey. Hi. How's it going?

Speaker 2:

It's going good. How are you?

Speaker 4:

I'm enjoying this this sunshine here over at Sitka.

Speaker 2:

Oh, lucky you.

Speaker 4:

Bus stop on Indian River right by the state troopers I can.

Speaker 2:

Oh, okay.

Speaker 4:

My my name is Kat.

Speaker 2:

Hi, Kat.

Speaker 4:

I am also known as Catherine Howard from Mangoon, one of Southeast locals. I love to play basketball. Most of my friends are in basketball and fishing, And, you know, I've been going through a spiritual battle in financials, like, through emotional disturbance of, like, friendships and, you know, just, like like, betrayal from thoughts of of just feeling it. You know? Just going through it all.

Speaker 4:

Mhmm. And I'm only 40. Okay? Yeah. And sure, rent is going up.

Speaker 4:

Food expenses are going up. Gas is going up. Babysitting money is going up. You know, the spiritual battle within myself, my own enemy, my own prison, my own you know, because I can't I can't escape myself and all of these things that that the enemy is lying to me about, that I'm not enough. There's only two lies in this world.

Speaker 4:

Mhmm.

Speaker 3:

It's that

Speaker 4:

you're not enough and you're not loved. And I'm really feeling it, you know. And I'm pretty sure everybody else is feeling that too.

Speaker 2:

Yeah. Definitely. Like, all go through those moments where we definitely self doubt and I know I could definitely speak on that, where I don't feel like I'm pushing hard not pushing hard enough, but I'm not working hard enough towards a certain goal with myself. And like you're saying, there's we go through dark troubles, and you're saying you like to play basketball. I always find going into my hobbies or interests, like, things that I find personal peace doing really centers myself.

Speaker 2:

So the more you could find those those activities or those things

Speaker 4:

Brother, what you're saying the way we can conversate this down for our our our friends now is, like, simple goals, you know, to make yourself smile and to get to the next biggest achievement.

Speaker 2:

Right.

Speaker 7:

Small steps Mhmm.

Speaker 4:

And and and simple minded mysteries. And and I'm just, like, a little kid yet. Even though I'm 40, I'm still a little kid. And mind you, I was, like, stabbed in the face, and I should be paraplegic vegetable right now. And I defeated those odds with

Speaker 3:

a

Speaker 4:

spiritual battle within myself too. And there's so many people. Like, they're they're they're atheists, and I call them secular. There's only three types of people I learned in my forty years of being here, is that there's secular, and there's religious, and there's biblical.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 4:

And and I really categorized the whole entire earth upon those. And, like, the the the sounds, the vibrations, and the frequencies, they all work underneath God's commandment. And then the interruptions, impressions, and and instructions are also some things that are, like, the main objectives of God's movement. Right? You can understand God from these ways Mhmm.

Speaker 4:

Is what I've seen. But I've also had to work, like, five different other steps. Okay? And not only that I've learned that these are the ways of God, I learned the other ways of God's steps are, like, repentance, what I'm doing right now, prayer, what I'm doing right now, and then reading is something I'm gonna go follow through with what I'm gonna in and and consecrate it and and integrate it. And and there's another word that I'm just now learning, you know, that are and I'm I don't need a high school diploma or a GED to get in the in the heaven or in the jail.

Speaker 4:

You know? So I'm kind of, like, stuck here in this spiritual battle of of being part of the cult and getting into a job the nine to five, and now I'm struggling. I'm 40 years old without a high school diploma and a GED. Okay? Mhmm.

Speaker 7:

And I I know a lot of

Speaker 4:

elderly people who made it that way. And even my sensei said that you don't need that to get into heaven. So I'm, like, stuck in my thoughts yet. And and I'm like, okay. I need to really do this here now, Lord.

Speaker 4:

What if what if I really do join a cult then? It's what I'm telling myself. Right? I'm scared. You know?

Speaker 4:

So they're they're pushing this upon us, and and then saw the First Amendment, our our, you know, our right to believe. And and now I'm still getting shunned upon, and I'm just under beneath us upon a bunch of creature under beneath us. You know? I'm I'm trying to defeat the stereotype of being not able to stride higher and farther than any other creature in this world. Like, the tree, the tree goes as far as it can go.

Speaker 4:

Right?

Speaker 5:

Right.

Speaker 4:

It goes as far as it can go. And then, like, within society, you know, the the caretakers of this land. And then there's arguments of the people of that they were born into. Like, we were born into this stewardness. Like, we were already gifted with these thoughts and knowing and understandings.

Speaker 4:

And so the government has to understand that, you know, you can't be born into this, and you can't learn this kind of way of being a steward. So why should we have to be shunned upon our own ways and thoughts and lands of that we were born into? Why are we being quieted now? So those are my thoughts of being stuck, of being in a spiritual battle. Like, my belief systems are getting shot at now, literally.

Speaker 4:

Mhmm. We're afraid they're afraid to go because of hatred, fear, and divide.

Speaker 2:

Well, I Now My hatred should jump in.

Speaker 7:

I'm scared. You know?

Speaker 4:

What do we

Speaker 3:

And I

Speaker 2:

feel for do? I want my 2¢ to that is stick with what you're believing, what feels good in your heart. Don't listen to any other naysayers that are trying to bring you down, and do what you believe in. Do what feels right in your heart for you. And that's really the most important thing I could stress to anyone, really.

Speaker 2:

And I do have another call, so I'm going to shift gears. But I my heart goes out to you, and I hope the best for you.

Speaker 4:

But then that that understatement would be be afraid of the creative, not the creation.

Speaker 2:

Right.

Speaker 4:

I did it. Alright. Good night. I thank you.

Speaker 2:

Yeah. No problem. I appreciate your call. And let's jump to the other call. Hi.

Speaker 2:

Welcome to Problem Corner. You're live and on the air. Hello? You're live and on the air. Oh, I lost them.

Speaker 2:

Give me a callback, and I'll get you on the show. But, yes, that last caller, I definitely feel a lot of stuff. And we all we all go through different issues. We go through different challenges. And a lot of the times, we feel like we can't get out of it on our own.

Speaker 2:

And sometimes, yeah, having friends, family, people on your side to kinda back you up is the the best thing, but also do what you feel is right in your heart for yourself, and we'll take that call. Hi. Welcome to Problem Corner. You're live and on the air.

Speaker 3:

Good morning. It's your weekly Thumbelina update.

Speaker 2:

Oh, how is Thumbelina doing? Or have you found any update?

Speaker 3:

Nope. Nope. No finding yet. Oh, no. Posted all over Facebook.

Speaker 3:

I'm gonna go out to Lena here shortly after I go finish boating and go see if I can find her out there because I understand the guys at it again picking up cats around all off in Tonga and taking them and dumping them off out the road and out in Douglas again.

Speaker 2:

Oh, no.

Speaker 3:

I hope that she's not one of them. So

Speaker 2:

Well, I almost thought I saw Thumbelina the other day. I live over kinda in the Silver Street, Steelhead area, and I had a polydactyl grayish cat come up to my sliding glass window the other day. And I was like, is that Thumbelina? I can't be sure because my neighbor across the street also has a bunch of gray Siamese cats. So I was like, oh, it's probably just a neighbor cat, but maybe I could send you the I took a photo just in case.

Speaker 2:

So I don't know if you want me to send you that photo. Maybe you could tell me yes or no if that cat somehow is yours.

Speaker 3:

Sure. 586848041. Sorry.

Speaker 2:

041.

Speaker 3:

508041. If anybody's seen her, her name is Bromelina. She's got twenty four toes, and she is a slimy.

Speaker 2:

Okay. Does she have blue eyes? Do you remember the color of her eyes?

Speaker 3:

They're kind of a darkish gray.

Speaker 2:

Okay. Let me I wanna double check.

Speaker 3:

She's posted all over Facebook. There's pictures of her on Facebook on every photo page, every cat page, every

Speaker 2:

Okay.

Speaker 3:

Buy, sell, trade, free page. You name it. She's on there.

Speaker 2:

Well, I'll I'll take a peek at those photos. I haven't seen your posts on social media yet. So I'll go dig in for those, and I will see if the pictures kinda line up with the picture I took, and I will let you know. I'll shoot you a text message if I feel like it's a close match to the cat I saw.

Speaker 3:

Okay. Thank you very much.

Speaker 2:

Yes. We'll shout that out over the airwaves. Keep your eye out for Thumbelina Gray Siamese Polydactyl cat. Alright. Thank you.

Speaker 2:

Of course. Thank you for the call.

Speaker 3:

Bye bye.

Speaker 2:

Alright. Bye bye. Yeah. So let's get Thumbelina home. Like, it's been almost a month now since Thumbelina went missing.

Speaker 2:

So let's find Thumbelina and get her home. I'll take one more call before we take a commercial break. Hi. Welcome to Problem Corner. You're live and on the air.

Speaker 7:

Yeah. Good morning.

Speaker 4:

Good morning.

Speaker 6:

I got a 2003 Ford one fifty four by four. It's a rust bucket, but it you know, everything mechanically is good on it, and it makes a great parts truck if anybody's interested.

Speaker 8:

Speaker 6:

So $503.03 $5.04.

Speaker 2:

Three three

Speaker 6:

Great tires. Mechanically, where everything works. But it's just bursting out of me, gotta gotta get rid of it.

Speaker 2:

Speaker 6:

Speaker 2:

Speaker 6:

Pretty close to getting towed away.

Speaker 2:

Got it. Gotcha. We'll see if we can get that truck off your hands.

We've had a few I started the program, talked about snow predictions, some child safety stuff, some promotions going on with this station here. We had a call. Still no sign of Thumbelina.

Speaker 2:

So I was trying to scroll through social media during our break to see if I could find those photos, but I might need to dig a little better because I did not see anything titled or I'm probably spelling Thumbelina wrong, maybe. Also, I had that 2003 Ford f one fifty parts truck asking 400 to $500 for that. If you're interested in that, give them a call at 907503354. And we do got a call. Let's get them on the show.

Speaker 2:

Hi. Welcome to Problem Corner. You're live and on the air.

Speaker 3:

No. I also forgot my 0 five Pathfinder.

Speaker 2:

Oh, on onto the Thumbelina. Thumbelina post.

Speaker 3:

Yep. Alright.

Speaker 2:

What what you Yeah.

Speaker 3:

Like I said, she's in 05.

Speaker 2:

05?

Speaker 3:

Excellent condition, brand new tires. The only thing wrong with her, she does run. She just needs a transmission.

Speaker 2:

Needs transmission.

Speaker 4:

3,500. Try to

Speaker 3:

get rid of her. I gotta get her off my property. My landlord says she's gotta go.

Speaker 2:

Okay. So cosmetically sound kinda runs but needs new transmission.

Speaker 3:

No. She runs. She just needs a transmission. Gotcha.

Speaker 2:

Alright. I got that written down. And real quick, how do you spell Thumbelina? Like, thumb T

Speaker 3:

h yep. T h u m b a l I n e l I n a. Sorry. Thumbelina.

Speaker 2:

Thumbalina. Okay. I was spelling it with an e, so that's probably why I wasn't able to find it on social media. So I'll I'll do some more digging, and I'll see if we could find Thumbalina back to you.

Speaker 3:

If you go on Facebook, my name is Jan Marie Barefield.

Speaker 4:

Okay.

Speaker 2:

Alright. I appreciate you calling back with your Pathfinder, and I will shout out the search for Thumbelina, I'll take a look at your post and see if your photos kinda match my photos, and I'll shoot you a photo if I feel like it's a close look or

Speaker 3:

close Okay. 508041.

Speaker 2:

Alrighty. I got that right now. No problem.

Speaker 3:

Thank you going.

Speaker 2:

Alright. So alongside our quest to find Thumbelina to get her back home, 2,005 Pathfinder needs transmission, but it still runs. Asking 3,500 for that. I know she's called in with that Pathfinder before, and she's given it quite detailed as cosmetically nice. Like, it looks good, just needs a new transmission.

Speaker 2:

So I feel like that's quite the steal if you're mechanically sound and you're able to figure out the new transmission issue. But, yeah, I need to scroll through Facebook and find Thumbelina. So you guys could always shoot it to us on KINY's Facebook page, and maybe we could share it around because I know that cat's been missing for some time now. Looking at some more events, I know we got second Saturday market happening over at the Minhall Mall this coming weekend. Of course, all our venues do their karaoke and open mic nights.

Speaker 2:

They're, like, Wednesday, Thursdays, usually at the Alaskan and Crystal Saloon. So if you're looking for something fun to do or something different to get out of the wetness, definitely swing on by downtown and have yourself some fun. Do some karaoke. Or if you're a musician or hobby musician, definitely swing on by, show your sound, and all that awesome stuff. Looking at some emails, nothing new emails today.

Speaker 2:

Of course, we got double your dividend promotion going on here at KINY in the Juno Media Center. So if you guys go to our participating businesses, scan that QR code, you'll be entered to double your PFD. An extra thousand dollars will be coming to you for that promotion. Of course, second summer's happening. So if you felt like you kinda did not have a great summer and you wanna get out and get some sunshine, definitely listen for our word of the day that queues on at nine, two, and 5PM.

Speaker 2:

So swing on to our any station around that time. It's usually a few minutes after the top of the hour there, but you can still get that word in and get that submitted. Looking at what's happening with our elections. So elections is are closing today or our ballot and our all that stuff. So definitely get out and vote if you are not able to drive.

Speaker 2:

Capital Transit is offering free rides to any voting center, so definitely take advantage of that if you wanna get out. This is an important one. This is really about the longevity in the future of Juno as far as financial choices go and even home finances go. Like, we have the chance to get grocery and utility tax kinda taken off our bills. We could cap cap the mill rate.

Speaker 2:

Of course, that last ballot with the seasonal sales tax jumping up to seven during the summertime and hanging around that 5% mark during the wintertime. So, yeah, definitely get your voice heard. It's important. This is our community, and we want folks to continue to live here. We want folks to call this place home and feel happy living here.

Speaker 2:

I know a lot of changes, a lot

Speaker 6:

of

Speaker 2:

choices have made that feel really iffy, but this is our home. I grew up here. I've lived here my whole life. Went to school here. Didn't go to college here, but I did go all through elementary through high school here in Juneau, and this is home.

Speaker 2:

This will always be home no matter where I end up at. Like, COVID happened. I was living down south in Washington. I were obviously, me working in the audio industry, that took a huge hit due to COVID. So, yes, I decided to come back home to Juneau.

Speaker 2:

And I know a lot of folks were in that same boat, especially during the pandemic, that they found more comfort coming back here to Juneau. So let's make that a place that any past Juneau, any past Alaskan that's lived here for a period of time that they feel comfortable feeling like they could start their lives here or even raise families here, which is huge. We want folks to feel like this is their future here in Juneau. So get out there, vote, get your ballots in, and that's enough about that. I've I feel like we've been hounding.

Speaker 2:

Get out and vote for a while. So I'm not saying we've been hounding, but we've really been bringing attention because this is an important one that's happening. More events in the capital city. Oh, I do got a call right before I was about to say some events happening. Let's get them on.

Speaker 2:

Hi. Welcome to Problem Corner. You're live and on the air.

Speaker 7:

Well, jeez. You've been quite the show today.

Speaker 2:

It's definitely definitely an interesting show. It's a little quieter than usual, but I keep it rolling.

Speaker 7:

That's because people are out and voting.

Speaker 2:

I know, which is good to hear. I hope folks are not listening right now, and they're going to go for it.

Speaker 7:

Well, staying in in the lines, I think that's great. Yeah. But I don't like the idea of me counting the votes either. I they're just it's just I don't know. I've noticed it in the few years I've been in Juno, and I've never seen that in the in Alaska.

Speaker 7:

I've never heard of him. I'm like, wait a minute. You're supposed to be anonymity into the building, but who knows? You know, this is where the capital is. Mhmm.

Speaker 7:

These are good old boys and good old girls now too, and they do things to their way. And that's all there is to it.

Speaker 5:

Right.

Speaker 7:

Now one thing that really bothered me on is why are diamonds and precious metals exempt from any cactus?

Speaker 2:

Oh. I mean,

Speaker 7:

that's that's BS. You can read all the bodies in the proposition. And they they exempt Alan. They would remain exempt if it passes. And that's everything to do with.

Speaker 7:

You know? One of mines, whatever it was called.

Speaker 3:

They had a lot of building, a lot

Speaker 7:

of big storage, and they got things done their way. Well, that needs to stop. Because if you go down that, you know, really Franklin, you know, almost everyone in those stores is what? A security store.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 7:

And they come from the outside for the most part.

Speaker 4:

Mhmm.

Speaker 7:

And there are some local Americans, but for the most part, now, yes, I give you my homework. You said we're here to work. And many times, people don't know where they're from. So why are they exempt?

Speaker 2:

I didn't actually don't know that answer. I don't buy jewelry or anything like that very often, but I'm I'm can kinda make an educated guess. This ain't the truth, so this is just my my process on this. But I feel like it's it's gotta be some sort of equated into the the cost of the actual gem itself or even the process of getting those metals and so forth. So I don't It's gotta be something to to deal with the actual jewelry itself, the reason why it doesn't get taxed.

Speaker 7:

Well, like, it doesn't cost that, you know, for to get a car. Of course, it does. Mhmm. I mean, and there is no excuse for why this period. They should be taxed just like any other business.

Speaker 7:

Mhmm. Is it the difference between a donut and a diamond? Yeah. At least you can eat the donut.

Speaker 2:

That's true.

Speaker 7:

You know? So, anyway, that's my whining complaint today that I'm I'm glad we're at voting, and I think it's important. And this council assembly was to keep doing things their way. You know, we we go down, ham, ham, sit loose twice. No.

Speaker 7:

They don't want to build a new city you know what I'm trying to say. City offices.

Speaker 2:

Right. Yeah. With the new city hall and the PFD Building there.

Speaker 7:

Yeah. That's what I'm saying. Thank you. City hall. So they're doing it their way.

Speaker 7:

They're gonna go right into the old PFD Building, which, by the way, a beautiful building. And we're gonna spend about 7,000,000, do the same stuff that maybe we can. It renovated, making them to their individual spaces for their offices and with different entities, gas, and the air, whatever over here. So I think it's it's BS. Everyone of them should be replaced.

Speaker 7:

Everyone that voted for it, and I think only two voted against it. So those two can keep their phones, but check it out and look into it and be agitated enough. No. It's against them. I don't care what you may stand for and everything.

Speaker 7:

This was a blatant slap in the face once again to the voters in Geno. We don't care what you want. We're doing it our way. And they couldn't wait to get their paws on that building because it is a beautiful building. I'm not the only one in it, but it's nice.

Speaker 7:

And I am just really picked up with and that this assembly and city offices do things their way, not the people's way.

Speaker 3:

Yeah.

Speaker 7:

It's part of the course now with what's going on, and we need to stop it. That is the baseline. This is the baseline. Where you live is your baseline.

Speaker 8:

So you work hard

Speaker 7:

at home, and and it makes the country lift itself up. No one's gonna lift that that badass.

Speaker 2:

Yeah. We got we gotta get our voices out there and get us heard. And, yeah, as far as local elections go, it's it's it's changing. It's happening. It's we just need the right folks in those seats, and I believe that we are getting to that point and that we will have

Speaker 7:

I love you. I you just have you know, young man. You know. So alright. I'm gonna get off the horn here before I just go out.

Speaker 2:

Oh, you're all good. I always appreciate hearing from you on the program.

Speaker 7:

Well, we appreciate you very much.

Speaker 4:

Well, thank you for that.

Speaker 7:

Continue late time.

Speaker 2:

Oh, yes. Get your vote on.

Speaker 7:

Yeah. Will.

Speaker 2:

Alright. You have a good one. It's always good hearing from her, but, yes, I was trying to Google about that. Yes. Most jewelry purchased in Alaska is tax free because Alaska is one of the few states with no statewide sales tax, though some municipalities may have their own local sales tax.

Speaker 2:

So it's important to verify with which specific town or borough where you're making your purchase. Purchases made in the area like Anchorage are often tax free, but locations such as Sitka charges a 6% sales tax on jewelry. But, yeah, it's crazy that Juno's not like that, but I'm sure we will have someone call in with that a little more. We'll just get some more folks on the phone. Hi.

Speaker 2:

Welcome to Problem Corner. You're live and on the air.

Speaker 5:

Yeah. Well, met the last lady. I don't always agree with her, but she's absolutely right. They've been doing it for years, and and we got multiple things in town here that we did not want, but the city decided to do it anyway. My personal opinion, there's not a person down at city hall should hold their job.

Speaker 5:

They should all be gone. Wade Bryson wants another three years. Well, you know what? His ad when he's down, his ad on the radio, he says, well, everybody thought I was gonna be a terrain wreck. He was a terrain wreck.

Speaker 5:

People don't reelect these people. Kick them out and bring in somebody new. And to get on a lighter note, there's a lady that called earlier saying she was, you know, she's trying to be a believer in God and everything else. Lady, keep doing it because you know what? It still leads you down a better path than any the other thoughts in your head.

Speaker 5:

So stick with it, and I hope everything works out well for you, lady. And that that's about all I got to say this morning.

Speaker 2:

No. I appreciate you calling in with your voice. And, yeah, I'm right there with you with that first caller as far as stick with it. Stick with what's in your heart and follow it. It

Speaker 3:

always works out best.

Speaker 2:

It does. I appreciate your call, mister, and I hope you have a great rest of your Tuesday and an even greater week. We'll probably hear from you again soon.

Speaker 3:

Yeah. Well, for all those people

Speaker 5:

that know me out there, I I deserve what I get, and that's what scares me.

Speaker 2:

Don't say that. Well, you have you have a great one, and I always appreciate hearing your face. Yes. Later. Alright.

Speaker 2:

Later, mister. And let's get to the other phone. Hi. Welcome to Problem Corner. You're live and on the air.

Speaker 8:

Yes. Hello. Hey. I just was kinda throwing it out there. I got a freight bill from freight being shipped up this week, and I'm just blown away.

Speaker 8:

I hope people realize how much the barges affect pricing of everything in Juneau. Mhmm. And I I told the barge guys, like, this is criminal what you guys are charging us, and it has to just get handed down. We'll just have to raise our prices more. But it I'm taken at the how ridiculous our shipping costs have become here in Juneau.

Speaker 8:

And, man, it literally affects every item in our town.

Speaker 2:

So It does.

Speaker 8:

People so I said I'll poke the problem corner and try and create a little back pressure. People should really be aware of this and start making waves. It's almost criminal what's being charged.

Speaker 2:

Oh, I I I see it firsthand. My my father works in the towing industry, and I've seen the change in prices through the years, and it's insane to to see where it's gone from to where it is now. So, yeah, I I It's hear

Speaker 8:

of hand and ridiculous. So, anyways, there's my 2¢ worth. Appreciate you.

Speaker 2:

No. No problem. I appreciate you calling in with that, and I'm sure other folks are right there with you with that.

Speaker 8:

Alright. Have a good day.

Speaker 2:

Thank you. You as well. Thanks for the call. Yeah. Shipping is going it's insane.

Speaker 2:

Like, obviously, they're changing rules. Like, no lithium lithium ion batteries like the ones that are in electric vehicles. Those are kinda being stopped as far as shipment goes up to Alaska. And, yeah, things are changing within the shipping world. Like, it is it is getting costly.

Speaker 2:

It is definitely being more expensive just to ship and move up here. Like, if you're coming from down south and you're trying to move up to Alaska, it is thousands of dollars just to get your home stuff up here. It's, like it is wild. Like, it should be easier to like, if you own a business, to be able to get your equipment and all the stuff you need for your business up here at a reasonable price that's not hurting the wallet and you're not having to like he just called, he doesn't wanna have to raise prices for his business to be able to afford shipping costs. So, yeah, it's always it's always a tough issue.

Speaker 2:

We got a few more minutes left with the program. It is 11:54, so we have about five more minutes left in problem corner today. I will echo back some of the calls that we had today. So, again, Thumbelina, the polydactyl Siamese CAD, grayish color, is still missing. She was missing almost for a month now.

Speaker 2:

I think it's up to a month now since we first got the initial call that Thumbelina was missing. So let's really try to find her to get her back home. She was initially lost in the Tongass Halof area, I believe, is the other street that she threw out there a while back. I'm sure you could scramble across social media, find some more info. She also had that 2005 Pathfinder asking $3,500 for that, but it needs new transmission.

Speaker 2:

It does run, but, yes, that transmission needs to be changed out. Then we had the gentleman with the 2003 Ford f one fifty. He's wanting to get rid of it as a parts truck. So if you have a similar model that the parts could definitely work for your truck, give him a call at 907503354. And then also, we had our our good friend here on the program calling about the jewelry tax and also some more assembly comments.

Speaker 2:

So, yes, that is very important to get out there, voice your voice. Like, obviously, the only seat that was opposed was the District 2 seat with Wade Bryson and Anna Brooks there. So but I'm sure that will change as we go into our next election down the road. I'm sure the other seats will get either opposed or whatnot. So let's really make the right choice for Juno.

Speaker 2:

Let's vote, get your voices heard, and get on out there. Before I wrap up the program, if you guys got any snow predictions, feel free to give me a call or shoot me an email with that prediction. I will start creating a list, and maybe I'll give out a prize for the folks that predict the closest date to the first snowfall. I'm I think I'm gonna count it not as the first snowfall that sticks, but the actual first snowfall that actually comes down here from into the valley. So I'm going with that first guest was I believe it was October 21 was our first I to look back at my notes, but I think that is the day October 21, and then the other one was before Halloween, which isn't really a date.

Speaker 2:

That's kinda could be any time in October, and that can be close, but as long as it's before Halloween. So, yeah, if you guys got a guest, feel free to shoot me an email or give me a call. We have a few couple more minutes left of the program. I'm super excited for Halloween and also super excited for the winter. If I'm sure you guys have heard me say it plenty of times here on the program.

Speaker 2:

I'm a very avid skier. But do you guys do have a special winter tradition? And what is it? Maybe tomorrow, that'll be our topic tomorrow, winter traditions. And, of course, if you are gearing up for winter, definitely winterize your home, winterize your boats.

Speaker 2:

It is getting close to that time to winterize everything, so just keep that in mind as we are getting closer to the colder weather. Winterize your home, your boats, your gardens, make sure you're all prepped up for the springtime coming around. If you haven't done so already, you still have a little bit of time before it really starts getting frosty here in town. A couple more minutes left of the program. I could squeak one more call in if someone wants to call in, but I think that's been a pretty good program.

Speaker 2:

We talked about the election. Today's the last day, and then we could kinda shift topics from that election and maybe talk about different things going on here in the capital city. Earlier, I talked about the possible North Douglas Gold Belt area there that's gonna be popping up in the coming years. And if you have not seen, like, the draft photo of it, I'm looking at it right now. It looks pretty slick.

Speaker 2:

It's got, like, a little seawalk around and a little pavilion. Cool look build cool looking building. And, of course, they're gonna make, like, a Tlingit replica village in that area too. So I think visitors and even locals will really reap the benefits because, obviously, we have all these different Alaskan native events going on. So I think that'll be such a great event space for kinda hosting those kind of things because they have that replica village.

Speaker 2:

It could really pull us back and pull the community back to those kinda ancestral roots here in the town. So it's I'm I'm very optimistic about that project. Alright, folks. Down to our last thirty seconds of the program. Hope you had a great Tuesday or gearing up to have a great Tuesday.

Speaker 2:

It's still early enough to have a great day. Remember, share spread kindness. Try to put yourself in other people's shoes. We don't wanna be negative towards folks that either have opposing views, that you're allowed to have those oppositions, but, obviously, sometimes the reasoning behind it doesn't fully make sense. But have meaningful conversations.

Speaker 2:

Do not destroy friendships over politics. That that is my advice for you guys today. Hope you have a great Tuesday. I'm Justin Miller. That's been hanging out you on this Tuesday, and I'll catch you guys next time here on KI and Wise problem corner.
