Welcome to The Figuring It Out Podcast.
At 22, I took the plunge to go on the entrepreneurial journey and start a fitness business, 7 years later I’d been the nutritionist for 2 elite sports clubs and private coach to some of the worlds best sportsmen and women.
Now it’s my mission to show fitness coaches how you can put yourself in a league of their own, become the go to coach, and finally eliminate the self-doubt and imposter syndrome that's holding you back from building the business of your dreams.
This podcast will help you figure out how to thrive and conquer the fear that comes with the lonely entrepreneurial journey.
If fear is the only thing stopping us from achieving our dreams and we only fear what we don't understand, then the antidote to fear is knowledge. All we have to do is find out who has the knowledge that we need to conquer our fears and achieve our entrepreneurial dreams. My name is Callum Walker, and welcome to the podcast that will help you figure it out and conquer this lonely entrepreneurial journey. Hello, everyone, and welcome to the podcast. Kind of important one today, and it actually kind of came off the back of a question that I've had from one of the amazing coaches who's currently running through my next level coach program.
Callum:If you're familiar with me, you understand that, you know, I I'm very, very well read in low carb diets. I, you know, effectively over the past ten years have, you know, gone down the ultimate rabbit hole of learning all about low carbohydrate diets in terms of, you know, academia wise, was accepted to do a PhD three years ago, really looking into the ultimate low carb diet being a ketogenic diet. And over the past ten years, I've really kind of been able to use low carb diets with my clients to change their lives insanely. I've seen men and women who struggle with their weight all of their life just all of a sudden begin to finally make long term sustainable progress. I've had people with type two diabetes have their diabetes completely go into remission.
Callum:I know people who have had cancer and things aren't looking good and all of a sudden they've gone ketogenic for a long period of time and things have completely changed for them. And the question that I got was because we just ran through a MantraLonger course all about low carbohydrate diets, intermittent fasting, and it was a really, really interesting question because she said, so effectively, what off the back of everything that you've taught me, a low carb diet is exceptionally good for people. So what I don't understand is why are so many people so anti low carb? Why are so many people against low carbohydrate diets even though there's scientific evidence to suggest that they're insanely beneficial? And it's an amazing question because it's a question that I've been pondering on over the last ten years.
Callum:You know, I get a lot of criticism around low carb. I've I've had a lot of criticism, especially around a ketogenic diet. And I think the things that always kinda comes to me when I get criticized for it is I go, well, I haven't made this stuff up. I haven't all of a sudden one day gone, do know what I'm gonna do? Just randomly start talking about ketogenic diets just for the crack.
Callum:I can definitely think of more exciting and interesting topics that I could potentially talk about. And if I actually look into it, the amount of research studies, the amount of papers that I have read all on how ketogenic diets, low carbohydrate diets massively impacts metabolic health. You know, whether that's weight loss, whether that's blood profiles, whether it's diabetes or whatever. I've read an insane amount of research and when I get criticized for it, it doesn't really make sense because I'm like, well, I haven't made this up. Have you read what I've read?
Callum:Because if you had read what I've read, then you wouldn't be saying this. And, again, it kinda comes to the question, like, why are people so anti low carb? And it's interesting because, Eddie asked me this question, and it really has got my mind turning. And I know I do know the answer, but there's multiple answers. I think, firstly, the obvious one for me is you, fear what you don't understand, and you fear what could threaten you, and we want to squash anything that could threaten us.
Callum:I think that's the first one. And I know that because, myself, you know, early on in my coaching career, I'd have a client basically say to me like, hey, you know, I've got this new supplement. Someone says recommended it to me. What do you think? And the first response when I knew absolutely nothing about it was to go, it's a bag of shit.
Callum:It doesn't work. It's not very good. Don't take that. Don't listen to those sorts of people. And the reason why I would say that was solely really off the back of the fact that I knew nothing about this thing.
Callum:And I've got a client sat in front of me who's paying me, looking at me through a lens of, oh, Callum's an expert. And if I then go and put my hands up and say, I actually absolutely no idea about this thing and I've never even heard it, that threatens my identity. And it also threatens the way in which I believe that they view me. It could decrease my status in their view. It could take me away from being known as the trusted expert and coach that they're paying.
Callum:And my mind would immediately go to, yeah, my mind would immediately go straight to, yeah, like put it away, put it away because if they then start to question you, I already feel like a little bit of a fraud as it is. If they begin to question you, then they're going to stop paying you. And then we go on the whole cycle of I've got to sign people up and going they're to tell people that Callum doesn't actually know what they're doing. So that's the first one. And I think that that is definitely profound.
Callum:I also think the second one comes down to so within that, if I look at low carb diets, I just don't think that people have read up on them. End of story. And I think that what's happened is that with the with the overall increase in exposure to social media and other influencers, The easiest thing to do is to listen to the people who are the loudest and the loud people are shooting down low carb diets. But I also think the second one, which I think is an important one, which is, well, in terms of people shooting it down, it's primarily only people on social media who are kind of shooting it down. And I think that, again, it kind of comes back to the threatening of the identity side of things where I think the important thing is to understand that on social media, the whole reason why coaches are on social media is to market their business.
Callum:Like, end of story. I would not be on Instagram if I didn't have a business. Like, I wouldn't. I genuinely wouldn't. I hate the thing, but it's a platform to get my message out there.
Callum:And if I look at what the majority of coaches do, they're trying their best to attract people. So the way that they try their best to attract people is basically positioning themselves as saying like, hey, like work with me because you won't have to cut out carbs. You won't have to do this, this, this, this. It's a marketing tactic. It's a marketing strategy.
Callum:It's a way of people almost being like, right, I'm going to try and make myself more appealing. Now here's the important thing, which I don't think these people consider. If they actually just adopted the low carb side of things, it would make them more attractive because there are people out there who, one, legitimately want help on applying a low carb diet. But also, the majority of people are sick and tired of having to count calories, lowering fat, tracking macros, all that sort of stuff. And if you can really kind of come into the world by saying, hey, I have a completely different approach.
Callum:It's not about lowering calories. That's about lowering insulin and lowering carbohydrates. It's a completely different message. And off the back of that, that would actually make you attractive. So I think that the majority of coaches actually bat it down as well because they think that it would make them unattractive.
Callum:And also when and and think about your own coaching business. If they almost kind of like see me, for example, saying like, hey, to get in shape, you've got to cut carbs. Well, what will probably happen is that that client will send that video to their coach and say, hey, I've got this nutritionist saying that I actually need to lower carbs. And you've been saying that I don't need to lower carbs and I haven't been getting results. Again, that threatens the identity of the coach.
Callum:So immediately go, no, it's a no lies. You know, you don't need to do it solely from a business perspective. So truthfully, look, there are other other things, know, the political side of things, the medicinal side of things, the big food side of things, but I'm not really kind of interested in that. I think really in terms of the main reason why most coaches will poo poo a low carb diet. And it's a real shame because they're missing out on an insanely valuable tool.
Callum:Legit you are because it fundamentally would change your coaching business because you won't have clients not getting results. You're able to stand out and differentiate yourself completely from everyone else. And, and, and also I just think even for yourself, like, you know, you go and apply a low carb diet to yourself, your performance will go through the roof. So it's a shame that these coaches really kind of miss out. And it fundamentally comes down to fear, fear of the unknown.
Callum:And we have always, as human beings, battered away the thing that we don't know. Now I'm going to continue pondering on this because, yeah, I I think it's a really, really important question, but those are my first two takeaways and my first few things. So, you know, if you are a coach and you are listening to this and you are like, right, you know, I actually would like to know a little bit more about low carb diets. I actually wouldn't mind you know, I don't wanna be one of those coaches who just bats it off anymore. Like, you know, I have been doing that, and it's actually kind of interesting.
Callum:I would like to learn a little bit more about it. I've actually got a free I've decided I'm gonna do, like, a a free nutrition masterclass on it. I wanna do a free nutrition seminar. We used to get that out there to really kind of, like, like, say, hey. Like, do you know what, guys?
Callum:Like, here is a different strategy that can really help you. I yeah. I believe that the the link to get started on to that should be below. As of recording this, I haven't decided the date, but I believe that the actual registration page will be below. But, yeah, I'm gonna do that.
Callum:So if you do wanna kinda learn more about low carb, you really are like, you know, you don't wanna be one of those coaches. You just bat something off because everyone else bats it off and you're genuinely interested in taking yourself to the new level, then, yeah, definitely register for the masterclass. So anyway, never forget if every one of your clients gave you a new client, you've doubled business. Have you got a client who isn't losing weight right now and you have absolutely no idea why?
