Hey. Welcome to LifeBite. Thanks for joining us. We're gonna pick off the message from a couple weeks ago about how the fact that Samuel came on the scene and he looks at Eliab like walking towards him and Eliab looked like you. You know he's just this big like and as soon as Samuel's on that's got to be him.
Speaker 1:Right? Because man looks at the outward. In fact, we have an entire industry called social media and the whole world is only focused about a snapshot that they And it's not them. It's not their real life. Yeah.
Speaker 1:It's like the new Hollywood. It's the new actor. And everybody will scroll. Everybody will see because man is only interested in what they look like from the outside. I mean think about it Zach.
Speaker 1:Think of what we do because of what we want people to see on our outward appearance.
Speaker 2:Sure. I mean you see people who are in the gym every day multiple times a day because
Speaker 1:Yeah. That's the thing that makes me mad about you by the way. Yeah. You're in the gym like once every three weeks.
Speaker 2:Hopefully more than that. Hopefully more than that just to stay healthy. But you know, there's a reality that we know what impacts people. We know what impresses people. We want to put kind of like that best step forward that people see something good.
Speaker 1:Yeah. I think that like my daughters they used to do this duck clip thing and be like you know they they take a picture and do They learn it from you? Yep. Yeah. Oh yes.
Speaker 1:Yeah. They definitely learned it from me. I thought so. Or it's like you see these people that are I like I've been out in public and you see these people and they've got like the Instagram Insta Sticks or whatever
Speaker 2:Yep.
Speaker 1:And they framed an entire picture. People have lost their lives for taking a picture.
Speaker 2:Mhmm.
Speaker 1:And when you think about how our culture is so self absorbed. I mean, and we're so self absorbed we like looking at the outward appearance of other self absorbed people.
Speaker 2:Sure.
Speaker 1:It's like so ingrained but God told Samuel something that I think I just want to pivot the conversation for just a moment. God told Samuel something look it's not that guy. God don't look at the physical appearance. That's important. He don't look at Instagram.
Speaker 1:Physical appearance is not important to God. He's not a social media God. Yeah. He's not looking at what you look like to the world. Bible says he doesn't look at the outward appearance.
Speaker 1:He looks at the heart.
Speaker 2:Okay. I got a question for you though. Right? Because Saul wasn't that. So do you think there was a learning curve for the people?
Speaker 2:Because they were used to a king that had a certain impression. So do you think even Samuel is like, oh, well this is what
Speaker 1:Remember what God said about Saul. They haven't rejected me Samuel. They haven't rejected you Samuel. They've rejected me. Mhmm.
Speaker 1:So God gave them what they thought they wanted and look what Saul did to him. Yes, he unified them but he almost destroyed them. Yeah. So you've got to see what God was doing. So he then finds scrawny little David Yeah.
Speaker 1:Who's got the warrior's heart. Yeah. That's why I always say whenever like we've got this guy in our church and enormous. Like he's just he's just all he's one big muscle coming down the aisle. And I'm like dude you think you can beat me but I got heart.
Speaker 2:And you could take him.
Speaker 1:You know what I may not be able to take him but I'd get back up every single time. The truth of the matter is that that God is looking at our heart, but we've got to be careful that we don't love the world. The way of the world. Now listen. I'm not saying that Instagram is wrong.
Speaker 1:I'm not saying that social media is wrong. I'm saying if it becomes our focus of what people look at Yeah.
Speaker 2:We could become hypocrites. Yeah. But it's it's hard because it's what you're facing every day. Like, I mean, we work at a church. Right?
Speaker 2:But a lot of people, they're in the world and it's and it they're rubbing shoulders with it all the time. And it's like, look. I mean, even Jesus said you're gonna get dirty. How do you like, what do you do with that? Yeah.
Speaker 2:Because
Speaker 1:You've gotta focus on what's happening inside your own heart. Mhmm. What do you think about? The Bible says to pray without ceasing. In other words, God's presence is with us all the time.
Speaker 1:We can talk to him any single time. He's always wanting us to communicate with him and to deal with things that are happening. So what do you think about? Where does your mind settle? Where like when you've got a Yeah.
Speaker 1:Moment alone. Where does your does your mind settle in the things of God? Or does your mind settle on and you fill in the blank. Right? Yeah.
Speaker 1:When the bible talks about heart it's about what you want. What you want. Do you want people to see the Insta photo, or do you want people to see character? Do you want them to see integrity? Do you want them to see, and I think in our culture those things are actually ugly right now.
Speaker 1:Look at are the people that make the most money are people that act. Like Yeah. They they have a persona and they they just put it out there and they act. But what's going on inside their hearts? What's happening with who they really are?
Speaker 1:Are they hurting, but yet they've got to be laughing? Are they mad, but yet they've got to show happiness? Mhmm. I mean life can't become an act. We've got to be the person who we are inside, and that's why God looks at that person because that's the person that he wants to deal with.
Speaker 2:That's hard work though. Right? I mean the outside like can be cleaned quickly, but the inside the things Like what about what about people who it's just like well, I don't know if I wanna deal with that. Like when I'm left to myself, like that's the most difficult time for me. That's why I wanna go out and be with friends and go and do and like that's a
Speaker 1:It's a great point Z. It does take work. It takes work and the Bible actually calls it a war. It's a spiritual war. You've got a war between the flesh and the spirit.
Speaker 1:Yeah. And the flesh is always trying to take control. And you've gotta put effort. You've gotta put work. In fact, I'll give you a word that Jesus said, strive to enter.
Speaker 1:Yeah. Strive to enter. Give it everything you've got to deal with the person that's on the inside. Now listen, if you take a picture you wanna post on Instagram, you're a pastor
Speaker 2:That's not saying
Speaker 1:you can't do that. Yeah. Let that moment remind you of maybe something inside that God's looking at that you need to change.
Speaker 2:Yeah. Reminds me, you started a podcast like several years ago upstream, but that's what it is. It's culture and everything around us is headed in one direction, and that fight to go against it to be countercultural So true.
Speaker 1:So listen up. Just remember, God's looking at the inside. He doesn't follow Instagram. He doesn't care about the image you want to give to the world. He cares about what he sees when he looks at your heart.
Speaker 1:Amen. God bless you guys. Amen.
