U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee and Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar have signed a lease agreement allocating land for a permanent U.S. Embassy compound in Jerusalem, marking a new milestone in U.S.-Israel relations. At the ceremony, Huckabee called it “another historic day for the U.S.-Israel relationship,” saying the move deepens and expands America’s presence in Jerusalem, which he described as “the eternal capital of Israel,” just ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary. Sa’ar praised the Trump administration’s 2017 recognition of Jerusalem and the embassy relocation as “an act of historic justice,” and said the latest agreement leaves that diplomatic shift “even more firmly anchored.” He added, “This agreement is about far more than the allocation of land. It is a recognition of history and a declaration of our shared future.”

In Venezuela, an extraordinary rescue is being called a “miracle” after 44-year-old Hernán Alberto Gil Flores was pulled alive from the rubble of the nine-story Galerias Playa Grande shopping center in La Guaira, eight days after twin earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 struck on June 24. Flores, a security guard, survived as international teams from El Salvador, Chile, the United States, Portugal, Mexico and Costa Rica worked through aftershocks and collapsing debris. El Salvador President Nayib Bukele said rescuers “worked tirelessly” and thanked God “for allowing this miracle.” Flores’ wife, Gusvimar Gonzales, said learning he was alive was like seeing “a ray of sunshine,” adding, “He was holding up like a hero.” The rescue comes as Venezuela’s death toll nears 2,600, with an estimated 50,000 still missing.

An Episcopal priest in Ohio is fighting to overturn church discipline that could end his ministry. The Rev. Daniel McClain, former rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Oakwood, has appealed to the Episcopal Church Court of Review after a hearing panel found he engaged in “conduct unbecoming a member of the clergy” and recommended he be deposed from ministry. Church attorney Deborah Stambaugh defended McClain, saying, “Very unfair and very misleading information had been put out about him,” and argued that “Father Dan’s dignity has not been respected.” But diocesan attorney Steven Ellcessor pushed back, telling the court McClain “never reported his conduct to his bishop,” “continued his conduct openly for well over a year” and “remained unrepentant.” The case also involves allegations of COVID protocol violations, questionable finances, and other conduct at the Southern Ohio parish.

A Kentucky church is facing backlash after a Vacation Bible School skit showed men in military fatigues using air rifles to “shoot” a man portraying Satan while children chanted, “take him out, blow him up.” Pastor Dewayne Walker of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Lexington says the viral clip was taken out of context and was meant to depict “spiritual warfare,” not promote violence. “The clip you saw was simply killing the devil,” Walker said, calling the performers “Commandos for Christ” and their props “Gospel Guns.” He added, “If I could kill the devil every day and raise him up and kill him again, I’d do it,” while insisting, “We hate sin, but we love the sinner.” Walker apologized to anyone offended, but rejected claims the skit targeted people with different beliefs.

United Methodist megachurch pastor and author Adam Hamilton has launched his first TV ad in the Kansas U.S. Senate race, casting himself as a different kind of Democrat and accusing Washington of building “a democracy that’s for sale to the highest bidder.” In the 30-second spot, Hamilton says, “America is more than a place,” calling it an idea that rights belong “not just for the wealthy few but for all,” and argues that “while Kansans can’t afford gas, groceries, or health care, that’s just not who we are.” The Resurrection Church pastor says it’s time Congress is “reminded that they work for us,” closing with, “we have to do better.” Hamilton, who describes himself as an “independent-minded Democrat” “leading from the center,” faces an Aug. 4 primary, with polling showing him narrowly ahead of Christy Davis and Patrick C. Schmidt before a likely matchup with Republican Senator Roger Marshall.

In Holly Hill, Florida, Pastor Terry Brown of Greater Harvest Ministries is denying any knowledge that church property was tied to a violent drug operation after her son, Ermando Lewis, and 17-year-old grandson, Logic Lewis, were arrested in a sweeping raid dubbed “Operation Holy Rollers.” Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood says investigators executed 10 search warrants and more than 50 arrest warrants targeting a group called the “Cutthroat Killers,” based at a house next door to the church. Authorities say they seized fentanyl, meth, cocaine, MDMA, firearms and cash. Brown told News 6, “My kids were not running no operation out of the house,” adding it functioned as a rooming house. But Chitwood pushed back, saying, “You’re just as responsible as everybody else is,” and calling the site “a headquarters by a bunch of thugs.”

The U.S. Supreme Court is being asked to step into a religious freedom fight in San Antonio, where the Lipan Native American Church says a Brackenridge Park redevelopment project would devastate a sacred riverbend used for ceremonies for centuries. First Liberty Institute and the University of Texas School of Law’s Law and Religion Clinic filed the petition after lower courts sided with the city. First Liberty attorney Stephanie Taub said San Antonio can improve the area “without bulldozing a centuries old native American religious site,” adding the city’s message that worshippers can “just go worship elsewhere” amounts to “the government redefining their religious beliefs.” Professor Steven T. Collis called it plain and simple: “Bulldozing a religious site is the definition of burdening religious practice.” City officials say they stand by rulings already upheld by the trial court and Fifth Circuit.
