Show Notes (Drive Version)
Episode Title: The Glass Cage: District Liability & Risk (Episode 74)
Episode Description: "You can't be everywhere. But your standards can be."
For a District Manager, a safety incident isn't just a tragedy; it's a liability nightmare. If you aren't auditing for "The Broken Window," you are leaving your company open to negligence claims.
In this episode of Drive, Mike Hernandez teaches you how to audit for Risk Patterns across your territory. Plus, we give a special shout-out to Kristin (Member #1) for leading the charge! We discuss why "The Night Ride" is the most important visit you'll make this month, and Mike shares his personal "Lucas Plan" story to remind you that leadership is a marathon, not a sprint.
What You Will Learn:
  • The Pattern Audit: How to spot systemic safety failures across multiple stores (it's never just one lightbulb).
  • The Broken Window Theory: Why a neglected exterior attracts crime and drives away customers.
  • Liability & Negligence: Understanding that your lack of documentation can be used against the company in court.

What is Drive: Multi-Unit Excellence for C-Store District Managers?

This podcast focuses on the skills required to lead multiple convenience store locations and support store managers at scale. Each episode covers multi-unit operations, performance management, leadership development, and execution across a group of stores.

District managers must balance results, people, and processes across different locations. Drive breaks down how to identify issues, support managers, improve consistency, and build strong operations across an entire district.

If you oversee multiple stores and want to improve performance, accountability, and leadership across your team, this podcast provides clear and practical insights.

Dr EPISODE 74: THE GLASS CAGE (DISTRICT LIABILITY)
"You have 10 stores. That means you have 10 glass cages sitting in the dark. You can't be in all of them at once. But if one of them gets hit tonight because the lights were out, or the cash was high, or the clerk was asleep... the lawsuit names you in the deposition. 'Mr. District Manager, did you know Store 4 had a broken camera for three weeks?' Liability is a silent killer. It waits for the incident to reveal the negligence. Tonight, we aren't just checking locks. We are auditing your Standard of Care."
"Before we hit the road, I want to recognize leadership when I see it. A huge shout-out to Kristin. She is officially Member #1 of the C-Store Center community. As a District Manager, you know that finding talent who actually wants to improve is rare. Kristin is doing the work. If she was in my district, I’d be keeping an eye on her for a promotion. Kristin, thank you for setting the pace."
Welcome back to Drive. I’m Mike Hernandez. Today we are talking about The Glass Cage from the Territory level. Your Managers are focused on their one store. You need to be focused on the Pattern. If Store 1 has a light out, that's a maintenance ticket. If Store 1, 4, and 7 all have lights out, that is a Culture Failure. It means your Managers don't drive their lots at night. And if they don't drive the lot, the bad guys will. We look for The Broken Window: If a store looks neglected (trash, graffiti, dark spots), it attracts crime. Your job is to be the "Fresh Eyes." When you visit a store, don't just check the cooler. Check the Safety Log.
• When was the last time the panic button was tested?
• Is the 'No Loitering' sign faded?
• Is the cash drop policy being followed, or are they waiting until the drawer hits $500? If you tolerate a safety violation, you are authorizing the next robbery.
"I know the pressure of this job. You feel like you have to have all the answers, all the degrees, all the experience right now. I want to tell you about my timeline. It wasn't a straight line. I first attended college in the Spring of 1987. I didn't finish. Work and life got in the way. For years, I felt like I was running behind. But in 2009, while I was working for Flying J, I went back. I finally finished my degree in 2012. It took me 25 years. I call it the 'Lucas Plan'. I worked my way up to District Manager just like you. And then I realized my purpose was bigger than the P&L. It doesn't matter if you took the long road to get here. You are here. You are the leader. Own your story. Finish the plan."
Alright, let’s audit the territory. Your job is to protect the brand and the people who build it.
Here is your Solo Quest for this week. "The Night Ride." Cancel your morning visits for one day. Drive your entire district between 8:00 PM and Midnight. Don't go inside. Just park. Does the store look safe? Does it look inviting? Or does it look like a target? Send the photos to your Managers immediately.
I have a "District Safety Scorecard"—a high-level audit tool that grades each store on Lighting, Visibility, and Cash Compliance so you can rank your stores from "Safe" to "At Risk." Text the word AUDIT to 956-897-9 1 9 2. That’s AUDIT to 956-897-9 1 9 2. Get the scorecard. Lower the liability.
And if you want to know how the Owner views the insurance cost of these risks, go listen to Episode 84 of Arrive. I’m Mike Hernandez. Safety is a standard, not a suggestion. I’ll see you on the road. C-Store Legends is a Sink or Swim Production.
