Karis: Welcome back to Fashion Files with Caris Renee. I'm your host, Caris Renee, and I'm so happy to have you guys here with me. So today's episode, we are gonna get into something very personal. Personal style. Okay, so I know sometimes it is very hard to kind of figure out what you like, what looks good on you, what do you feel is your personal style.
So I'm gonna help you find it or at least give you some tips and tricks to help you figure out what your personal style is or should be, maybe. Okay. So let's go ahead and get into it.
Okay, so why do we feel like that personal style really matters? Right? [00:01:00] So it kind of helps tell your story of who you are, like what represents you. It gives you confidence, . Helps you build your story on like how you feel about yourself and of course how other people perceive you. But what we, of course, care most about is how you feel about yourself.
Everybody else. You know what I mean? Like, uh, some people care. I don't really care. You know what I mean? But I really do care about how you. Feel and want to make sure that you feel good on things that you put on your body. And it's more than also just your body. It's how you wear your hair, how you wear your makeup, how you wear your nails, what, how you accessorize.
And so all those things will help you build a confidence that you'll walk out every day and you're like, yeah, I'm that girl. Okay. That's what I want you to say when you look in the mirror before you leave. Yeah. I'm her. I'm him. Whatever. I want you to say that. Okay. And also something that is very important to note is that you don't have to al always follow the trends either [00:02:00] and your style evolves. So we're gonna kind of get into both of those things.
So in order to find your style, some of the things that you can do is start to look at people that you like. Who are you inspired by? Like that has things that you like to see them wearing and not necessarily that you're gonna copy their style. No, but it'll give you a starting point.
So utilize Pinterest and start creating mood boards with things that you see people that you see used to my clients back in the day before we really got in heavy into social media, I used to . Tell people to go through magazines and pull out clips of, of ads or people wearing things, or designers and things that you like.
It'll help you to be able to figure out what colors you like, what silhouettes you like, what textures you like, and just how things are put together. Okay, so start there. Get on Pinterest. Or if you, you know, wanna build a Google Doc because you're saving, um, pictures from the internet or whatever, and you wanna put slides together, do that as well.
Do [00:03:00] on Google Slides or PowerPoint, whatever. Pinterest, I feel like it's easier because you see one thing, it's gonna keep showing you similar things, so it'll be easy for you to kind of. Make boards. You can make a color board like, oh, I love these colors. You can make, oh, I love these prints, I love these textures.
Or I love how they layer these items and they put these things together. So create those types of board. So it'll kind of give you a, a starting point where of things that you like and things that you enjoy. Okay. So that's the first step. All right. The next thing that you're gonna do is you're going to access your current wardrobe. Okay. So go ahead and take a look at the things that you already own, and let's see what the things, what things make you feel the most confident.
What are you most comfortable in? Okay. Make sure that you're going through and you figure out, uh, I like how this looks on me, but I'm not really sure if it's my . Style again. 'cause remember, like I said, our style can evolve from time to time, [00:04:00] so maybe it's something in your closet I haven't worn in two years.
Listen, I have stuff and I literally will go through my closet every, uh, season, like fall and winter and spring and summer, and I go through and so I can assess. Things that have been in my closet, and like I'll buy stuff and I have stuff and uh, and this is how, you know, I'm a stylist, but it's a work in progress.
So you gotta keep on top of yourself. I have to do this for myself as well. And so I'll have something and I'm like, I haven't worn this. I've had this for over a year. Clearly I don't gravitate towards it. It is time to get, it's time to get rid of it. It's time to get it out. But then I have stuff that I'm like.
Every time I put this on, I feel amazing. It makes me feel my most confident. It's never going anywhere like I have that so many things, especially for my shoes. Like I told, I've, I've said it before, especially like if you follow me on TikTok, I did a whole, like I tutorial about like how to upkeep and keep like your shoes and I have shoes that I've [00:05:00] had.
For years, and I love them so much that anytime they start to get a little worn, I get the tap replaced. I take them to the shoe repair store so that they can get fixed because I don't ever wanna get rid of them. So look at those things in your closet, whether it be clothes, shoes, accessories, and figure out the things that you're like, I can't live without.
And other things that you're like, I thought this was my style, but I've never worn it. So maybe you don't really like it as much as you thought you did. You know, maybe you liked it or maybe you bought it on sale and you was just like, 'cause. I'm, I'm hitting myself 'cause I have done that in the past too, where you saw something cute, it was on sale.
So you was like, Ooh, I wanna try it. And now it's just been sitting in your, your closet collecting this. So assess your closet, figure out those things and that's the next step. So let's move on to the third step.
Okay, so for step number three, this is where you're going to find those signature pieces. If y'all remember in a previous episode when we talked about like, [00:06:00] what is my go-to look . I think it was the episode where we were getting to know me and Erica was interviewing me and I said, my go-to look is a blazer dress.
If I don't have anything else and I need to find something quickly or just need to get dressed quickly, I'm gonna throw on a blazer dress. Hence. So I have one on today because I wanted to come to dress to show you like this is one of my . Signature go-to looks, figure out what that is because you're gonna have a lot of those, right?
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. There's no need to continue to recreate the wheel when you've already figured out things that work. Okay? This is also where you're gonna get into having those staple pieces. A staple item is the pieces that you can wear with multiple things. Maybe it's a blazer that you can wear.
A dress, you can wear it with jeans, you can wear it as a suit, you can wear it different ways. You wanna have those staple pieces that transition from outfit to outfit. I had somebody tell me the other day, they were like, [00:07:00] Keris, I don't think I've ever seen you wear the same thing twice. Which I do. I wear my clothes.
But I switch up the look. Okay. So when you find something that you love, you just figure out how to wear it multiple times. So find your signature pieces, those pieces that you really love, that really work for you, and buy multiple of them. Okay? step number four is figuring out who your style icons are. Figure out whose style you like the people that you love to see. This could be celebrities, this could be your mom, you know what I mean? It doesn't have to be a celebrity, but like some of mine, I love, we've already talked about Tiana Taylor. I love Tiana Taylor's style.
She doesn't really have my style aesthetic, but I can pull from things that she wear and figure out how to make it fit my aesthetic. Okay. Also, I love Tracy Ellis Ross, like she's been passed down so many things from her mom, Diana Ross, in addition to building her own style, like. It's so great. Her style is [00:08:00] amazing.
Okay. So figure out those people that you love to see and what they're wearing and figure out how you can kind of incorporate that into your own wardrobe. Okay.
And last, but certainly not least, experiment. Try new things. If there's a trend that you really love and you're like, oh, I really wanna try that, you should try it. It might not work, but you'll never know if you don't try it. So don't be afraid to try and experiment and try new things, okay? Because style is supposed to be.
Fun. Fashion is fun and you know you're gonna make some mistakes. There are things that I have worn before that I would never wear again, and that is okay because that is how you figure it out. Okay? So don't be afraid to try new things. You can always run back to the things that you know work, but this is how you start to expand your style and your style starts to evolve, and you figure out what works for you by trying new things.
Okay? So those are the tips you're gonna start with, so you can try to figure [00:09:00] out your style. Okay, so now we're gonna talk about how you can kind of build that confidence and avoid burnout, so I know we all love the fashion Novas and the Shein and the h and m's and all of those things, but I'm not telling you not to shop there. I'm not gonna be ever be one of those people because do what you can afford. I just, I, I'm never gonna be that girl, but. Just don't get so encompassed with new trends that you feel like that you have to have the latest and greatest of everything.
So you're shopping at these places in abundance, okay? Always remember quality over quantity, and that's how you end up with those pieces in your wardrobe that's just been hanging there, collecting dust and you not gonna ever wear by doing those things. So make sure that you are shopping with intent, okay?
And also remember, sometimes you can get in a rut. It happens to the best of us. Sometimes I go to my closet and I'm like. I have nothing to wear. I think that we've all done that, right? I have plenty to wear, like it's so many things in here, , [00:10:00] but sometimes I'm just uninspired by the things that are hanging up in my closet and it's okay.
These are the times you wanna experiment with new things. ,
Whether it's a pop of color with your lip, or with your makeup, or a pop of color with your accessories. This is when you can add those things that kinda will pull you out of that rut, okay? It happens to the best of us, like I said.
Okay. [00:11:00] Okay. So these are some ideas that I've given you to help you find your personal style. So there are three takeaways that I want you to remember. Okay. . So the first takeaway is pause before you buy. Think before you make that purchase. All right? Don't just get into it and you see something like, I will put something in my cart and it'll sit there for a while before I purchase it, and I know sales come and go and you're like, oh, I don't want it to sell out.
But do you really need it? I want you to really think about it. Does it fit with your aesthetic? Does it fit with your personal style? Is it one of your signature looks okay? Before you press purchase, before you buy Now, I'm always the one telling you to add the cart, but I want it to make sense. Okay? So that's the first thing.
The second thing is look at what you already own. Do you really need that item? Do you really ask yourself that question? 'cause I [00:12:00] dunno. Now, like I said, yes, if something works, buy it in multiple colors, but if you already have it in that shade of blue, I don't think you need two of those things.
Okay. Not unless that one is really like worn and you're like, okay, I love this so much, so now I need a new one. And you're gonna go send that one to the Goodwill. Okay? Don't have two of them in your closet that look exactly the same. We don't need that. And number three, most importantly, stick to what makes you feel good.
Where are the things that make you feel the most confident and make you feel really good about yourself? Like I said, when you look in that mirror, you're like, yeah. Yeah, I did that. Okay. That's what I want you to do. I don't care what it is. If it makes you feel good, wear it. Okay.
All right y'all. Now it's time to sip some tea with soul Chai. [00:13:00] Okay. So grab your tea and let's take some time to sip tea, literally and metaphorically.
