The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

In the first of our series with some of the best artists of the recent Buskers World Cup held here in Gwangju, we had finalist Katie Ferrara join us to talk about her experiences here in Korea and like...A LOT of other stuff in an exclusive interview.

Show Notes

As broadcast November 11, 2022 with plenty of laughs and good memories.  Tonight we welcome Gwangju Buskers World Cup finalist Katie Ferrara to the show for more than a few giggles remembering her time in Korea and rocking some tunes from her favorite artists in LA and beyond.  We talked about Patrick Joseph's Korean secret identity, the difficulties of not naming Flute Loops after a cereal in conversation even though he's like coolest person in the world, and the good and bad of the Buskers World Cup.

_________
It is 20 hours past midnight and it is time for our weekly main event as another glorious fall day hath come & gone, with tonight scribbled into the stars above as November 11, 2022. Danno here this is what I do from studio 2 between 8 & 10 on GFN, making waves from the big tower in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? Tonight we are very happy to welcome Katie Ferrara to the show, who was a finalist at the recent Gwangju Buskers World Cup, and it was a treat to get to know Katie a bit during those precious couple of weeks here in our fair City of Light. Tonight Katie will join us in hour 2 to rock some of her favorites from the World Cup and artists from her home base in LA, and of course like the true gentleman I am, I’ll be doing the same here in hour 1 to roll out the red carpet for our lovely and very talented guest tonight. For right now though, we go to A Forest for the history, but we’ll keep it shadowy and mysterious until the sounds go up and come back down but for now let’s just hit play. THIS is The Drop.
The Cure – A Forest
________
The Drop has begun things proper tonight on our guests & requests Friday sesh. Danno here, making things go here in hour 1 until we are joined by Katie Ferrara, who is our guest artist selector for tonight’s hour 2 main event. Katie hails from LA and was a finalist at the recent Busker’s World Cup here in Gwangju, so we’ll be talking about that along with her favorite tunes for hour 2.
That was The Cure with A Forest to open things out tonight for our TIGHT (or) feature to begin the gig. And that is because it was on this date 20 years ago that the band played the first of two Trilogy Concert shows at the Tempodrom Berlin, which sees them perform their very dark trio of albums - Pornography, Disintegration, and Bloodflowers – front to back in that order and in their entirety. The concerts were filmed and released on a double live album DVD set the following year.
For those not familiar, if you see The Cure come around, these shows even nowadays are not to be missed marathons of the highest quality. Hope to see them again in Korea soon.

So now that we have the shameless, futile self-promo out of the way, let’s get into it. Now, as explained our guest Katie Ferrara has chosen a smattering of favorite artists out of LA along with the Buskers World Cup, so we’ll be doing the same while featuring some of her other songs. Right now, it’s all about The Jungle and shards therein with Broken Bells up next to be followed by Broken Baby along with a cut for time rocker from hour 2 by Jos Josland, all of which we’ll talk about after the magic smashes literally everything. THIS is The Drop on your Katie Ferrara Friday.

Back on The Drop as we head towards the jump during quarter one of our nightly game of audio mirrors. Danno here in studio 2 GFN HQ, and readying the tarmac for Katie Ferrara’s playlist to land in hour 2 this evening. For those just joining us Ferrara is out of LA and was a recent finalist at Gwangju’s inaugural Buskers’ World Cup, and we’ll hear her most recent single to start part 3. As to what just broke stuff, a few LA favorites right there, starting with…
Broken Bells – The High Road (…this of course is the collab project of Danger Mouse and The Shins frontman James Mercer. This tune appeared on the band’s recent album that just dropped this year, their first in a while, and that’s called Into The Blue.)
Broken Baby – Hand Heat (…yeah, we play these two a lot on the show, wanna fight about it? For those unfamiliar, this is the duo of Amber Bollinger and Alex Dezen, also the co-owners of Poor Man Records, with this tune appearing on their latest LP Late Stage Optimism.)
Jas Josland – Money (…this is actually a cut for time refugee from Katie Ferrara’s playlist in part 4, and the artist hails from Christchurch, NZ. This tune appeared on See What You Did There if you dug that and crave more although I don’t…I’ve had that said to me way too many times in my life.)
Okay, so let’s get to some originals from our guest artist selector tonight and close with a pair of tunes from the wonderous Katie Ferrara. Up next is a tune called This City which we’ve previously featured on this show, and then we’ll close with Picking Apples to call it quits on the first quarter of the game tonight. This is The Drop on your guests and requests Friday night with Katie Ferrara.
Katie Ferrara – This City

The Drop returns as we open the ice cold 2nd can in our nightly audio four pack with nary a word of warning when we cracked it. Danno here, ready to welcome Buskers World Cup finalist Katie Ferrara to the show tonight. Katie hails from LA and has a playlist of mostly LA-based and Busker faves for hour 2’s selection, and we just heard a couple of acoustic picks from her that we just didn’t have time for on the air in parts 3 & 4, so let’s talk about what just went into space…
Charlotte Campbell – Peter Pan ( …this is an artist out of London who Katie Ferrara is a big fan of. Of course, the tune is about one of my favorite places in Never Never Land although admittedly I never got to go, and this was released as a standalone single earlier this year.)
James TW – When You Love Someone (Acoustic) ( …another artist out of the UK here and a very popular one at that. The original of this tune hit the top 40 on the Billboard charts back in 2016 when James Taylor-Watts was only 19 years old. Amazing.)
Now before we continue with what we’re doing here….#9870, @gfnthedrop, pod.
So to continue the move tonight towards what this show’s all about with our guest artist Katie Ferrara, we have another one from her hour 2 playlist to start with Bryce Drew, then it’s a couple soul favorites of ours and previous guest selectors out of LA with Otis Kane and Loren Oden wrapping the triangle. THIS is The Drop on your Katie Ferrara Friday evening.
____________
Moving along towards the close of the first half and into the final verbosities we go for this first 57 of the show. Danno here, it was written in the script the footprint’s at the hospital, very excited to welcome Katie Ferrara to the show as our guest artist selector this evening that starts momentarily, but for now let’s talk about that last triumvirate of tunes we just threw into the air forever...
Bryce Drew – Lucky Number (…another one Katie chose but we had to cut for time in hour 2, this one being a soulful number from the LA-based artist released as a standalone in 2020 which as you all know was humanity’s best year ever.)
Otis Kane – Free (…the most recent single from one of our favorites out of LA right here, this one released earlier in the summer. Otis is not only a great and totally independent singer-songwriter out of LA, but is a seriously fashionable dude. Seriously, thread game level up. Check out his debut album Purple Blue if you wanna hear more.)
Loren Oden feat Adrian Younge – Galaxies (…another lovely soul singer out of LA and like Otis, just a genuinely amazing guy to talk to. This one dropped on 2020’s My Heart My Love LP, and Oden told us an amazing story about a nephew of his who has a learning impairment, and the boy’s mother was telling Oden that Galaxies calms the child down and helps him focus. Isn’t that a lovely story? I think it’s amazing.)
Now, let’s get to our final tune of the first half and we’ll go back to the Buskers World Cup with Aussie artist Ben Jansz and a tune called Woman, and that is gonna close shop on the first half tonight. Big up to Ben Jansz and all the Buskers. THIS is The Drop and that’s halftime, Mizz Ferrara.
Ben Jansz – Woman
